Amtrak gets $30M to pay for Sandy recovery costs

The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. —

Amtrak is getting $30 million from the federal government to defray the cost of repairing damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the grant Friday.

About $20 million will go to reimbursing Amtrak for pumping water and removing debris from tracks and tunnels as well as repairing signals, pump stations and other infrastructure.

The rest will be used for repairs to tunnels connecting Manhattan to Queens and New Jersey to Manhattan, and other facilities.

The Oct. 29 storm inflicted the most damage on electrical systems, including a substation in Kearny in northern New Jersey. That repair work is expected to continue through the summer.

Amtrak was able to restore partial service on the Northeast Corridor within a few days of the storm.
