THEATER PICKS

Cinderella's slipper fits kids and adults

Published on: 05/09/2008

Our reviewers suggest the weekend's best shows. (Unless otherwise noted, comments are by theater critic Wendell Brock.)

'Noises Off,' Aurora Theatre's season finale, is a behind-the-scenes British comedy about an ill-fated theatrical production.

More plays and musicals

1. "Cinderella della Circus" / Grade: A

Only Jon Ludwig would put Cinderella in clodhoppers and make her fall for a clown prince. Inspired by the epic showmanship of P.T. Barnum and the classic fairy tale, this marionette show may be intended for kids, but there's plenty of winking irony for adults, too. Through June 22. Center for Puppetry Arts. 404-873-3391, puppet.org.

2. "The Little Dog Laughed" / Grade: A-

An irresistibly crisp and campy comedy of manners that mixes the salaciousness of "Queer as Folk" with the satirical edge of "Entourage." Douglas Carter Bean's play exposes the hypocrisy of Hollywood's sexual politics with glee and bite. Be prepared, however, for male nudity, simulated sex and raunchy language. Through Sunday. Theatre in the Square, Marietta. 770-422-8369, theatreinthesquare.com.

3. "Noises Off" / Grade: B+

Michael Frayn's furiously funny backstage farce gets a well-oiled workout in Lawrenceville.

Through June 1. Aurora Theatre, Lawrenceville. 678-226-6222, auroratheatre.com.

4. "Expecting Isabel" / Grade: B

Synchronicity gives birth to big bouncy comedy that chronicles the heartbreak of infertility with rhythmic good timing. But with the exception of a couple of touching moments, the tone is more roundly comic than preggers with insight. The hamster jokes are pretty good, though. Through Sunday. Synchronicity Performance Group at 7 Stages. 404-484-8636, synchrotheatre.com.

5. "Godspell" / B

Cartwheels, silly accents, celebrity impersonations, slo-mo running, leaping and bounding into the audience. This '70s musical telling of the Gospel of St. Matthew verges on the hyperactive. But get beyond that, and there's much reason to rejoice. Through Sunday. Theatrical Outfit, Downtown. 678-528-1500, theatricaloutfit.org.
