1. "The Merchant of Venice" / Grade: A
Long after the nasty business with Shylock, what hangs in the mind is the sparkling comedy, exquisite design and pitch-perfect performances. Through Aug. 2. Georgia Shakespeare at Oglethorpe University. 404-264-0020, gashakespeare.org.
2. "After Ashley" / Grade: A
Gina Gionfriddo's provocative drama is a scathing indictment of the public's prurient blood lust and the media's eagerness to fulfill it. Through July 26. Essential Theatre at 7 Stages Back Stage Theatre. 1-877-840-0457, www.essentialtheatre.com. — Suzanne Van Atten
3. "Song of the Living Dead" / Grade: B+

4. "Mount Pleasant Homecoming" / Grade: B+
The latest Sanders Family saga is a delightful gospel hootenanny that packs enough hillbilly nonsense to guarantee a baptism by laughter. Winner of four Suzi Bass Awards for excellence in professional theater. Through Aug. 3. Theatre in the Square, Marietta. 770-422-8369, theatreinthesquare.com.
5. "All's Well That Ends Well" / Grade: B-
