It looks like the High Museum of Art could have a big hit this fall with “The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army.”
Though not opening until Nov. 16, the museum has already seen 37,000 reservations made for the exhibit of life-size figures and related artifacts discovered in a vast subterranean tomb some 20 years ago. That’s nearly three times as many as the High’s previous record for advance reservations, for the first exhibit of the ongoing Louvre Atlanta partnership in 2006.

A regiment of terracotta soldiers stands in a tomb pit at the Museum of the Terracotta Army in Xian, China. Fifteen terracotta statues will be included in the Atlanta High Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition, ‘The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army’ which opens on November 16 and will run until April 19, 2009.
The number is especially pleasing, says senior manager of public relations Cassandra Streich, because the museum has not even begun its serious marketing efforts, and Atlantans are notorious last-minute deciders.
