R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, an art student at University of Georgia before he found his musical calling, has gone back to his visual-arts roots. You can find an outdoor sculpture — a pack of bronze foxes —at Sovereign, the new Buckhead condo.
Stipe is not the only rock musician/artist. John Lennon, who, like Stipe, started out in art school, illustrated his books in the ’60s with witty line drawings and continued to draw throughout his life. Devendra Banhart has exhibited at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and Eyedrum.
Yoko Ono is a bona-fide conceptual artist. But you know how it is with celebrity. Plenty of rock-star artists are Sunday painters at best. Their work would not be hanging in galleries but for their name.
Paul Stanley of Kiss has two shows in Atlanta this weekend to showcase his paintings. Should he stick to applying makeup? You be the judge.
- Paul Stanley will appear Friday 6-9 p.m. at Wentworth Gallery in Phipps Plaza. 404-233-0903. He will also appear at the Perimeter Mall branch of Wentworth Gallery on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. 770-913-0641. His paintings will be on view at both galleries through Sunday.
- Michael Stipe’s sculpture is at Sovereign, 3344 Peachtree Road. It is outside on the plaza at the valet entrance.
