Marietta’s Art in Park offers ‘nice place to go’

Decorative port-o-potties part of ‘View It and Use It’

WITH JUST A SWOOSH of the paint brush, artists at Marietta’s Art in the Park have flushed away the bad rap on port-o-potties. Well, kind of.

They’ve painted the exterior of five portable toilets for an exhibit, which festival director Carolyn Morris dubs the “View It and Use It Station.”

The 22nd annual arts and craft festival will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at Marietta Square.

Decorative themes among the port-o-potty artists range from a Georgia bulldog to the classic crescent moon on an outhouse door.

“It’s taking a lighter side of something that is typically not fun to talk about,” Morris said.

The “View It and Use It Station” won’t be the only eye-catcher of the event. The Marietta Cityscape Project encourages children and parents to create their own mini town using a massive canvas as their landscape, and boxes, tubes and other objects as buildings.

“Last year a goldfish gallon container made out of a cardboard box became the aquarium,” Morris said.
