Wynton Marsalis tops weekend jazz options

Jazz fans are sure to be excited by the choice of music events this weekend.

Aside from the usual haunts, Wynton Marsalis is here Saturday night to perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The concert is a National Black Arts Festival event and a real treat at $20 admission.

The Pulitzer Prize winning composer is writing an all-orchestral work titled "American Symphony," which was co-commissioned by the ASO and the Boston Symphony.

Marsalis just released a new album with Willie Nelson titled, "Two Men with the Blues."

Saxophonist Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship at Callanwolde. The ensemble performs on the lawn accompanied by vocalist Audrey Shakir. 7:30 p.m. Friday. $15; $12 senior citizens and students. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, 980 Briarcliff Road N.E., Atlanta. 404-872-5338, www.callanwolde.org.

The Tyrone Jackson Quartet and Rio Negro: Friday Jazz. In partnership with the National Black Arts Festival. Jackson performs an eclectic blend of classic and contemporary jazz followed by Latin jazz band Rio Negro. Evening includes extended hours to view special art exhibitions. 5 p.m.-midnight Friday. $18; $10 after 10 p.m. High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. 404-733-4444, www.high.org.

The DeKalb Blues and Jazz Festival. Throw in a little R&B too. The lineup includes Con Funk Shun, Heat Wave, Warren Hill, Ken Ford and several others. 5 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Free lawn admission 3-5 p.m. Friday and noon-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. $5-$10. Rain or shine. No grills; no pets. Alcohol allowed but must be consumed from cups. Summer Jazz Series at Villa Christina. Features trumpeter Melvin Miller on the grassy area of the Dunwoody restaurant's rose garden. 5:30 p.m. Admission starting at 4 p.m. Free.
