Jump for Van Halen

vanone.jpg

It’s finally happening. Van Halen is coming to Atlanta.

The tour that reunites David Lee Roth with the band that launched his career is already in full swing, but there wasn’t an Atlanta date until today. Van Halen will play Philips Arena on Feb. 10 and the tickets go on sale Saturday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m. at www.livenation.com, the Philips Arena Box Office or through Ticketmaster charge by phone at 404-249-6400. Tickets are $51.50, $81.50 and $151.50.

It isn’t exactly the original band. Bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang, but it’s close enough.

Will you be lining up for tickets, or are you a Van Hagar fan?

I will be there. It surprises me a little that Van Halen will come to Atlanta. The taste of music here somewhat sucks. Van Halen is superior to what most people here like. This will be a must concert for anyone looking forward to seeing real musicians play pure rock.

Saw them in Greensboro their second show of tour, it was an amazing show. One of the best I have ever been to! We thought we should see them early since history has proven they can’t stay together long…lol

Right Jim - Too many people here like stupid gay bands like cold play dave mathews, maroon 5, etc. Van Halen puts them to shame. If dave mathews can sell out for two days, Van Halen should sell out for 1 year straight in one city. David Lee Roth is older but at least he doesn’t sound like a dave mathews singing like he has a hot dog protruding down his throat.

I, too, saw VH in Greensboro and will be going to the Atlanta show as well! The Greensboro Coliseum was a decrepit place to see a show, but the show was still unbelievable!

I’m too old to appreciate Hannah Montana, especially not having kids yet, but if she’s even half the showperson David Lee Roth is, she’ll do very well. I have to say, though… Wolfgang Van Halen has more talent than any kid I’ve ever seen singing “pop tart music”.

I saw the original lineup years ago in the old Omni arena.

I heard that the high harnonies originally sung by Michael Anthony will be pre-recorded and that Wolfgang will not sing them. That is kind of lame. I am getting sick of bands using backing tracks like that. Saw it at the recent Police concert here. It’s not rock and roll to have your sound man queue up your songs starts for you so that you cn match and backing track.

Hey, no need to dis DMB just to elevate Dave and the VH brothers. Both rule their respective genres. Dave Matthews? Folksy acoustic jam rock. David Lee Roth? Camp rock with a ‘tude.

So glad they added us to their route. I may try to snag a ticket. God knows the chance will never come around again, though I’m sure there’ll be a DVD of this tour. They’d be crazy not to - retire on the royalties of a DVD/CD from the tour…

Having seen the original 4 (Roth, Anthony, & VanHalen bros.) WAY back when, I think I’d rather just keep my memories of how fabulous they were intact. Somehow, the idea of having poor little Wolfie up there on stage frantically plucking away at his bass whilst dodging his Dad & the other almost-geezers is just…well, I don’t know. Sad & creepy all at once.

“OH MY! an ERUPTION!” is coming! Having seen Van Halen up close & almost personal at the Fabulous Fox Theater & later shows plus & minus David Lee, I am wondering if I will be in for a letdown of memories past? I remember buying the vinyl of Van Halen I and letting the needle drop not having previously heard any of their music & being totally in awe of the music that burst forth. Yeah, I guess I will make a try at getting tickets for this show. Isn’t $151.50 a bit too much?

This will be a good show. I saw David Lee Roth twice a few years ago and they were great shows - his guitarist sounded just like Eddie and played the parts perfectly.

It’s kind of no big deal that Anthony is not there. I thought I would miss him in greensboro but I didn’t. It will bring tears to your eyes watching the Van Halen Trio of Alex, Eddie, and Wolf all jam together. It is as emmotional as seeing Eddie and Dave high five each other routinely througout the show and totally embrace each other playing kick ass songs that haven’t been played in almost 25 years. Van Hagar was great as well but this is different. They started their career with these songs. Most of the songs date back to the mid-late 70’s. Also, They play prerecorded backgrounds on parts of 2 songs - no big deal. It’s just to take some of the pressure off of Wolf and Ed - Background vocals are a big part of Van Halen music than most other bands.

I think I will pass one thing it’s on a Sunday night. :( I would love to see Eddie, but do I really want to see him play the same guitar solos over and over. He at least looks better than he did 6 months ago. Google Eddie Van Halen and look at the images, he has that crack head/meth head look with the green teeth. They probably had to put about 80K in his teeth to make him presentable again. I am glad Dave is back, but to me it’s still not FULL van halen unless Michael Anthony is playing. Eddies kid has been playing bass for 6 months and he’s their bassist. May change my mind, but we’ll see.

OH HECK Yea I will be there. I was there the last time Van Halen came (although with Sammy) and the last two times David Lee Roth came solo. Both amazing. This is the most underappreciated band in the last 30 years and they will go down as one of the top 5 bands EVER. I will pay whatever price I have to to go.

Guys, I saw this show in Chicago 2 months ago….FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!! They do all of the old stuff. Yeah, David can’t quite hit all the notes, and his 360 kick is now a 90, but they’re still “ever-so-bad-azz” Eddie and Alex still do their solos, and I’m still convinced that they are not human!!!

JIM WROTE: It surprises me a little that Van Halen will come to Atlanta. The taste of music here somewhat sucks.

What does this statement even mean? There are approx. 4 million people in metro Atlanta, with a wide variety of musical tastes, and someone throws out a blanket statement like “the taste of music here somewhat sucks”? What does this mean? Where is the “here”? A particular neighborhood or city in the metro area? And, what would this person have to experience to decide that the taste of music “here” does NOT suck? And, it’s not like Van Halen is some little art band that only the “hip” or “cool” like. They are a mainstream rock-n-roll band. Doesn’t take sophisticated musical tastes to enjoy them. Strange comment from Jim.

I really don’t understand something….do these bands think that EVERYBODY has a freakin’ six figure income to pay $51.50 alon just for nose bleed????? My wife and I love Bon Jovi and after we found out that floor seats were $147.00, we were like, “p** on that!!!.’ Make a better album AT LEAST and we’ll think about it. “Lost Highway” BLOWSSS!!!!! Bon “country” sucks!!! And I’m sorry, David lee Roth is just a few fries short of a happy meal now a days. He’s just too damn old to realize it. Until ticket prices are somewhat reasonable again, they ain’t gettin’ my dollar. Ticket prices are just ridiculous now.

Alright, a band of old farts comes to ATL and the AJC is all over it. Remember when The Boss came, and the AJC did a four day long spread — the concert came 20 years after the boss was even a popular band. Hey, can’t wait for Paul McCartney to come so I can really get my wimp rock fix. Sorry yall, ATL is as uncool as it gets when it comes to music, and the AJC is a reflection of that. That said, I used to like Van Halen, til I realized what azzholes the Van Halen bros are.

By Laugher

December 3, 2007 2:09 PM | Link to this

I’m glad they’re all still able to play and jump around on stage without breaking a hip, but honestly after seeing them just a few years ago it was clear that either my memory of them back in the 80’s and early 90’s is flawed, or they have lost a step or two.

What I would like to see is another album, maybe something new and fresh, then I might mortgage my home to “Ticket B*******” for a nose-bleed seat.

By Tommy

December 3, 2007 2:24 PM | Link to this

The Boss isn’t a band, so, er, if you’re gonna call an entire city ‘unhip’, then at least know a few of the facts about the artists you’re dissing. Fact is, Springsteen debuted at #1 (again) with this new album and the show sold out rather quickly.

But you should be happy, youngster, you’re getting oodles of coverage for the Hannah Montana concert. Now, is she a person or a band? I’m so unhip!

Hey Tommy - hate to burst your bubble but there are still seats available for Springsteen. www.ticketmaster.com

I hope to see VH again with DLR at the helm. The 1984 tour at the Omni was hot! Any idea if they have the same gigantic stage setups they had 20 years ago? Their stage show always seemed ahead of its time.

I have seen every iteration of Van Halen including the most lame Gary Sharone tour. During the David and Sammy tour David Lee Roth was really bad. Eddie, Alex and now Wolfie have made this thing a joke. Michael Anthony is lucky not to be on tour with these guys.

“The taste of music here somewhat sucks”

WTF kind of comment is that? You mean, Atlanta isn’t Bowling Green, Ohio or some other town where all the freaks like cheesy hair metal? I like Van Halen. I saw them in ‘81 and thought they were okay. I’d enjoy seeing this gig as the VH with Sammy was gawd awful (really, nothing good has come from this band since 1984).

As for the tastes of this city sucking… that’s hilarious. If you meant radio here sucks, I’d agree, but how do you know what 5 million people like?

By sslkjlj

December 3, 2007 3:13 PM | Link to this

I normally don’t go to concerts any longer due to the ripoff ticket prices, but I may make an exception for this one. I’ve seen Van Halen live four times — three with DLR and one with SH, though that was more out of curiosity, as I didn’t like the music they produced with him.

But those three DLR shows were easily the best shows I’ve ever seen. And I did see a lot of live music back then. In their heyday nobody knew how to make a concert truely entertaining like they did.

Their ‘1980 Invasion’ for Women and Children First was the first concert I ever attended. The ticket was $9.50.

By Ryan

Despite the love of all their music and respect for the musical talent, I refuse to see those back stabbing brothers and their obnoxious frontman. Michael Anthony’s vocals masked Roth’ inability to sing for years. He was extremely dedicated to that band, but it didn’t matter in the end.

Jim, Tdog and others dissing the Atlanta music scene, or the “taste” of local fans…you’re stupid! You can say lots of bad things about the ATL, but here you have the ability to see everything from the latest underground wunderkinds to dinosaur rock bands. Acts from the past 5 decades come here. There are plenty of clubs with blues, country, jazz, folk, Christian, soul, hip-hop, urban, rap, whatever! What cave are you living in?

I have always been a Van Halen fan. I really feel sad for the path they have followed (David in, David out, Hagar in Hagar out, etc.). What really ticks me off is the lack of english skills you boneheads demonstrate when you can post a comment. Forget VH, go back to school and get a decent job.

December 3, 2007 10:25 PM | Link to this

This is awesome. I flew to Kansas city and saw them their just in case they broke up and boy did they rock the house. The band is like night and day with David Lee Roth back in the band. I met Eddie and he is sober to the bone. His Son (Wolfie) who I met as well just told his dad that he didn’t want to be like his Dad and be dead at 66.

Okay enough about that BUT man did they rock!

Yes DLR can’t hit some of the high notes BUT neither can Mick Jagger and all of them at their ages now.

Now for this tidbit. Michael Anthony could be joining the band on the 2nd leg of the tour w/ Wolfie, etc. The also will add some more songs to the setlist such as ‘Sinner Swing’, ‘Where have all the good times gone’, ‘outta of love again’ BUT for sure no ‘Bottoms up’ as we all know why.

This is a concert you don’t want to miss for sure. Enjoy it and they will have a new album out late next year.

Last few times I saw Van Halen in atlanta, not close to being full. And then bands like Dave Matthews sell out two nights. That’s a bunch of crap from what I see. Due to that alone, Kind of implies that people’s taste of music here favors “crap” music rather that good rock like Van Halen.

YEA MAN, I’M DEFINITELY A VAN HAGAR FAN, BUT I LOVE THE ORIGINAL LINE-UP TOO. IS IT POSSIBLE TO LOVE BOTH THE SAME? IT’S TO BAD ABOUT MICHAEL ANTHONY NOT BEING IN THE BAND, I CAN’T SEE THEM REPLACING HIS HIGH VOCAL RANGE WITH ANOTHER SINGER-BASSIST…OH WELL, I GUESS IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN & HEARD!!! I’M DEFINITELY UP FOR IT, I MISSED SEEING THE BAND BACK IN THE BEGGINING WHEN THEY OPENED FOR BLACK SABBATH…YEA, WHEN OZZY RULED! AN X-FRIEND OF MINE WAS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT BUYING BOOZE FOR THE SHOW-AND WASN’T REALLY CRAZY ABOUT VAN HALEN ANYWAYS…HE JUST WANTED TO SEE BLACK SABBATH. I WAS VERY P**, I MISSED VAN HALEN’S DEBUT, AND STILL TO THIS DAY WISH I COULD GO BACK IN TIME TO THAT DAY!!! I’m really on the fence about this one. Ticket prices are steep! I wonder if tickets will sell out fast? I am really bummed that Michael Anthony won’t be there. He is just as important to the reunion tour as anyone. DLR with a toupe’ sounds kinda scarey. Will it fly off during his roundhouse kick mid-air? That would be worth “51.50” for sure! As for Atlanta radio, I agree with everyone here that says “It Sucks!”. It does suck! Just hit the beach anywhere in Florida and you’ll get a taste of a real rock station. I think Elton John owns all the Atlanta “rock” stations. I guess it’s time to invest in satellite radio… Will this VanHalen show really be worth the almost $200 I’d have to spend to go? I can’t decide!
