Big Boi On Pimp C

bigboipimpc.jpg

As news traveled about Tuesday’s death of Pimp C of the legendary southern hip-hop act UGK, Atlanta’s rap community was quick to show its appreciation.

Wednesday morning Rashan Ali of Hot-107.9’s “The A Team” told listeners she had been lobbying for UGK to get an honor at the station’s annual Dirty Awards. The most recent ceremony was just this past week and Bun B, the other half of UGK, was in attendance. “I hate that now it will have to be done posthumously,” Ali said.

As he promoted his debut CD “Gangsta Grillz” -in stores the same day as the artist born Chad Butler’s death, the cause of which is still being determined - DJ Drama made sure to first pay tribute to Butler and his family. “I know this is a big day for me, but this is a sad day for hip-hop, and I have to pay homage first…Before there was OutKast and Goodie Mob and T.I., there was UGK. They paved the way. And we are all thankful.”

Speaking of OutKast - featured on UGK’s most recent hit, “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” - we reached out to both Andre “Dre” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton for their reaction, and while Benjamin’s rep said he had no comment at this time, Patton (pictured above) said: “First and foremost my prayers go out to Pimp C’s family and Bun B. He was a dear friend and colleague, one of the most honorable men in the game. He will definitely be missed, but his legacy will live on through the music of UGK and Bun B.”

Man, I remember back in ‘94, that “Riding Dirty” UGK CD had the ATL on straight lockdown. NOBODY wanted to listen to anything else here. I think that may have been the last time one hip-hop CD had everyone on board at the same time. No matter how many times you heard it, you never got tired of it. I would be bumping it in my car, go over a friends house and hear it coming out of at least ten different rides on my way there and then when I got there, my homeboy would be playing it. It was crazy, but fun. I’ll never forget those days, thanks UGK and rest in peace Pimp C- a true Dirty South soldier and pioneer. Where would the Atl be if you guys had not kick in the front door for all of the south? RIP and much love!

Sorry to here of pimps death,my prayers are with the family.I have never heard of the group, mybe because I donot listen to there type of music, because some of it is very degrading. We here about so much crime today, we certainly donot need to listen to it in music.I listen to music to uplift my spirit at times, and some of the things thats being said by some of the rap singers will not uplift anyone spirit.I love Jesus and try to live a way thats pleasing to his teaching. May God bless his family, and his soul.I am a black female.

Only true fans of Southern Hip Hop can understand the importance of Pimp C to rap.

Don’t even respond to these ignorant posts, just appreciate what Pimp C aka Chad Butler meant to each and every one of US.

RIP Chad, thanks for repping the South…

Regardless of some of the punks ass losers on here, Pimp C was a true music icon. In my opinion the most talented rapper to die since Biggie and Tupac. He is certainly the most talented and influential Southern rapper to have died ever. He helped to invent what is Southern rap. (or at least Southern rap I get down with)Its a sad few days. I been pourin out and lightin up, and listenin to UGK every minute I can since I heard the bad news. He was one of 6 Southern rap pioneers. Now Bun B, Big Boi,Andre, and 8Ball & MJG are gone have to step it up for the South and keep us on blast. Its dirty South, A-Town to Houston

Did your mother ever teach you that if you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say anything at all? some of you guys have such disrespect at times when the best thing that you probably need to do is to say a silent prayer for the deceaseds families and shut the heck up….GOSH…..Its appalling and almost against human nature for your hearts to be so hardened and cold at times like this……

My bad jg1020, thanks to some extra curricular activities back in those days, my memory isn’t what it once was. LOL No need to question my fanhood because of a slip in memory. I’m sure I’m not the only UGK fan with that problem. You questioning me because I got the albums mixed up? Goodness, too bad we all can’t be perfect like you.

I will surely miss the cleaver, witty, and trill lyrical style of Mr. Chad Butler aka Sweet James Jones aka The Pimp aka Pimp C. His high pitched delivery was one-of-kind and always complemented the smooth, bob-your-head beats. The style this cool cat brought to the game has often been imitated but never duplicated. I’ve been a UGK fan for years and I became a bigger fan when I read about Bernard tutoring Chad in high school to help him graduate. My heart truly goes out to Bernard because his actions demonstrated his true and unconditional love for Chad. Pimp claimed he wrote country-rap-tunes and not hip hop, but I say UGK was a pioneering hip hop duo. Sure they wrote adult-entertaining, untamed, Triple X, rock-out-with-your-c-out lyrics, but they were creative and unique unlike some of the garbage that gets airplay these days. Funny that Chad never wanted the mainstream attention, he was content with being an **Under Ground King. That’s what made this dude RAW. The Pimp did it for the people in the street not the airwaves. It’s obvious from this blog they had a loyal fan base and new younger fans as well that may not have seen the evolution of UGK. Hopefully there evolution will get documented in a proper fashion. I hope Chad got to experience all the pleasures of life he desired before leaving this chaotic world that he often wrote about. My heart, love, and prayers go out to Bernard, as well as the Butler family, friends and fans. We all mourn this sad loss of a man that was talented, driven, creative, and unique.

The ignorance of (c)rap is no excuse for the ignorance for some of these posts however, it is sad that our youth find Pimpin’ & Ridin’ Dirty as aspirations! R.I.P. ‘C’ and peace to your family in these moments of pain. No, it’s not my type of entertainment (hard to call it music) because it reeks of regurgitated nonsense but still, I won’t stoop to the level of others…

To: Darrin The Vent King I’m not from ATL, but I remember when that CD dropped and you are so right we played it until it was scatched and had to go buy another. Every car you passed was bumping Riding Dirty. My all time favorite was Pinky Ring. He will be missed. A side from his rapping he was a real as they come.

Why would you click on the link to read the story and then post something. Keep the negativity and hatefulness breeding in your own home. Do not bring that to others. Peace and Love*

Been a long time fan since about 93 when “Pocket full of stones” came out on the Menace to Society soundtrack, and Too hard to Swallow. I personally feel the man is a legend as far as his lyrics and production goes. A lot of people are talking down on him, but have never taken the time to research more than the bad things they can Google. The man has always talked about everyday issues that we deal with living, growing, and surviving in our communities. People will say well he talks down on women, and some might say that he never let a disc get out without a positive message some where on it. He was a God fearing man who just spoke about what he saw, and how he saw it. He will be very missed in the rap community for his “Country Rap Tunes”. God Bless the Dead. “It use to be Free Pimp C, now it’s C The Pimp Free” -I’m Free

After hearing both Bun B and Pimp C on Jay Z’s “Big Pimpin”, I immediately started my search for more music by the group UGK. I really enjoyed/enjoy their music. I must admit that I found some of the lyrics a bit risqué, however it’s not my place to judge. Everyone has to live his or her own life by their own personal beliefs. I definitely pray for contentment for his family during the grievance process. I am very surprised by some of the NEGATIVE comments and outright disrespect, for no one is perfect or without sin. Let’s keep this in mind before posting. PEACE to all.

First off….RIP to the Butler family. Pimp C will be truely missed!!!! Such southern classics like “Wood Wheel” and “Take It Off” and a throwback like “Tell Me Something Good” UGK to the South is like M.O.P to the North. A Southern Pioneer!!! Thank you for what you did 4 us!!! From VA to TX, we salute you!!!!!

Toya- those were the good ole days back before the rest of the world knew the Dirty South had flava. That’s what I miss about that. Only “a chosen few” knew. We down here like our stuff and that was enough back then.Ish is ALWAYS better and more raw when it’s underground. That’s why UGK was who they were, the Kings of the Underground. I bet the tightest lyric any emcee ever spit was when he was the only one who believed in him when he was underground, that time when you 1st try and come on the scene when no one, not even yourself know if your best is good enough. Pimp C and Bun B had that together. They were trying to do something that hadn’t been done- come out repping the south? Unheard then. It was either, no disrespect either, N.Y. or L.A. and UGK helped mightly to change that. I remember when I 1st read that Jay-Z was into them way before “Big Pimpin” came out, I was like “Dayum”, the world is hearing us, then it was OutKast, then Goodie, then 8 Ball and MJG and Suave House (and let me not forget the Geto Boys), then from there everything just fell into place for not just the South, but everyone. I will never forget UGK for that. NEVER. Much luv for the Kings, oops I mean KANGS!!
