Who do you love?

Atlanta and Athens have several musical reasons to boast today. The Drive-By Truckers, the Whigs, the Selmanaires and Anna Kramer & the Lost Cause all released fine albums today. It’s just the beginning of what could be a banner year for Atlanta’s indie rock scene.

We want to hear about your favorite local bands and musicians. Which artists do you catch every time they play? Any other local musician with an album coming that you’re really looking forward to? Go on, talk up that musician or band that you think will be the next big thing, then you can say you were there from the start.

The second album is like the first album only its better. Its like they said “Hey, the first albums great.. but lets make another one thats alot better.” So thats what they did.

The Whigs have crossed the line. The 2nd album reminds me of the first album, only with a lot more hot sauce.

All of those albums are going to be great, but the best album by an Atlanta artist this year is Attractive Eighties Women’s debut, Coup D’é Ta-Ta’s! I mean… they made the Peach Buzz today!

You mean, an AJC blog about music that isn’t about a rapper? WTF AJC?!

I would hope the Truckers album will be good now that Jason Isbell is gone, but I don’t know - They may have run their course. Get back to recording a few “fun songs” and don’t try to be relevant or important. Just be a rock band — that or let Mike Cooley write every song you record. COOLEY IS THE MAN!

GWC is AN AWESOME ROCK BAND! They are the next rock band to make it big out of Atlanta. Check out there website at: (http://www.myspace.com/greedywhitecitizens) If you like the sounds of STP, Tool, Incubus and many other great rock bands, this is the new band for you!

Van Hunt is a must see, I wish he played in town more often.

I recently saw Janelle Monae for the first time, unbelievable performance. I’ll definitely be seeing her again.

Two of the bands that opened for Janelle were Tendaberry and Deep Cotton were also really good. Tendaberry is playing a free show at Lenny’s on the 28th that I’ll be checking out.

Golden is another great local band, highly recommended.

Gareth Asher is someone else I saw recently, he opened for Jimmy Gnecco and was awesome. I’ll be seeing him again soon.

the Drive-By Truckers do a great deal to support the local cinema and mental health communities in Athens in many different way. Bo Beddingfield and the Wydelles are doing well right now, having just opened for the first of three DBT shows at the 40 Watt. Tin Cup Prophette played the 40 Watt last night with an eight and a half months pregnant Amanda Kapsouz performing her various instruments in that atmospheric manner. Her hubby Bain Maddox is doing well also. I would direct your attention to Dubconscious, Kite to the Moon, Good-Bye Donovan, David Barbe and the Quick Hooks along with cover bands ZZ Topless and Heavy Petty

All these bands are important to the life of the musical community but the fans, bookers, and the musicians/artists who support the community and insure its’ future.

David Railey (promoter/creator of The Corndogorama Festival/talented singer-songwriter), Patrick Hill (EARL Booker/talented musician) and Alex Weiss (Echo Lounge Booker/OK Productions/GREAT artist) booked, championed, encouraged, and gave a place for performers 365/24-7 LONG before anyone ever thought that Atlanta had a rock/indie scene. The Drunken Unicorn, ISP (RIP), Star Bar, and Rob’s House/Criminal deserve props, too. WRAS’s locals show, WREK’s “Under the Couch”/Local Show also supported a scene that grew when the Labels and 99X were pushing … Puddle of Mudd.

Say what you will about the “new crop” but these people have earned something that goes beyond MTV coverage and Pitchfork cred.

Anthony David… great singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitar player, he’s written for India.Arie as well. Neo-Soul artists Lando (he’s my sweetie pie!) Rahbi, Phillippia and Algebra Blesset can throw it down as well. Usually you can catch them @ Sugarhill or Apache Cafe’. Just might hit up Apache tonight for the weekly jam session. You never know who might grace the stage.

There’s a group called Dayzahead…they have a really nice sound as well.

I saw Gareth Asher at the Jimmy Gneccho show too and he was incredible. Check out his full band at Eddie’s Attic on February 8th; I sure am. Passionate vocals, great melodies are always there with this guy…www.garethasher.com
