I have to say that naming Murmur as the best work of all time is an all-time lame, nostalgic, and easy call…great tunes on Fables, Dead Letter Office, Document…that guy must be as old as Reagan who gave the profound opinion that Murmur is the best!

I agree Murmur is the best, coming from someone who saw them at the 40 watt at that time. Fables and Dead Letter Office are no match poser…….. As for the new stuff, terrible pop 40 garbage. The old stuff was raw and had an edge. Driver 8 take a break…..

are you really calling people out? didn’t like the murmur reference? Talk about profound. Naming Dead Letter Office as an album is profound. Even if you were only flexing your “REM knowledge” muscle- Dead Letter Office - btw-is a compilation of b sides and doesn’t have any reason to be included in the same discussion of best REM albums. I am sure that you impressed yourself with that witty post but i felt an overwhelming urge to set you straight. It seems that you are trying way too hard. Feel free to question my fandom at any point, i will smoke your ass.

you’re all losers. the absolute peak moment REM’s entire trajectory is the performance of BELONG from the MTV unplugged sessions. end of story. i know everything.

Best album was Chronic Town. I bought their 45 when it first came out. That makes me sort of a god. With this self proclaimed deity status I feel compelled to ask, “Can a group really be considered rock and roll with nary a guitar solo?” Call me old school but REM couldn’t carry Jason and the Nashville Scorchers’ case.

Bill was the “B.S.”, factor in the band. Their recording of “Dream #9”, was awesome. Anyway, I look forward to the June show. The “boys”, never disappoint!

Wasn’t name dropping Kip… I didn’t even go to school in Athens and didn’t know about Tyrones, only remember Herbies. Is that obscure enough?

The eighties will always be relevant. Murmur was the best. It was a big hit on the USS Carl Vinson in 1983. Radio Free Europe for all you young whipper snappers.

I’m pretty sure that the boys in REM would be very dismayed to realize that their announcing of a new album and tour caused their fans to incite a verbal war with each other over what the best REM album is. C’mon, guys, invoke the spirit of this band and join hands! We’re all fans, so take some joy in that!

I agree. All these arguments about which REM album is the best are just stupid. Especially, when the best album, “Document” hasn’t even been mentioned.

This is heaven on earth to me. Murmur was my first exposure to good music as a kid - I still rotate the first five albums in and out of my listening. It’s been four years since I’ve seen them live, but that was a great show.
Modest Mouse ruled my CD player in the latter 90’s.
The National is now, to me, hands down the best thing going in indie rock.
All you naysayers, please don’t buy tickets - save them for the rest of us.

Lakewood? How about the new Verizon Amphitheatre in Alpharetta —Lakewood is horrible.
The Eagles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Rush will all be playing VWA@Encore Park this summer —REM should follow suit.

Dear Shanice, Another irrelevant 80’s band trying to stay relevant…stop, please, stop!???????
Obviously, you wouldn’t know great music if it bit you. However I’m not surprised…I’d be surprised if you could name 5 songs without a Google search.

I’ve never gone so quickly from loving a band to not caring. I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years since these guys mattered. Never dreamed I’d even write a sentence like that. From what I’ve read the new album sounds like it might be decent (after the horrible Sun). I’d like to see REM walk into a studio and bash out a thrashing rock album in a few days. This is coming from a fan since ‘83 when I bought Murmur and saw ‘em live for the first time that summer.

Picking the best R.E.M. album is an exercise in futility, but for the record, it’s Fables. Personally, I’d love it if they put out Monster part 2.
