Chastain series-A announced
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It may not look like spring just yet, but the announcement of the first part of Live Nation’s Chastain Park Amphitheatre concert series might have you itching for the warmer weather.
Here’s the series-A line-up:
The Moody Blues — April 19
Santana, the Derek Trucks Band — April 25
Sheryl Crow (non-table set-up) — May 3
Duran Duran — May 17
James Taylor — May 24 (in series) / May 25 (not part of the series)
ZZ Top — June 7
True Colors with Cyndi Lauper, the B-52’s, Rosie O’Donnell, Tegan and Sara — June 16
Chicago, the Doobie Brothers — June 24
REO Speedwagon, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts — June 29
Donna Summer — July 1
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss with T-Bone Burnett (non-table set-up) — July 10
Earth Wind & Fire — July 14
Mark Knopfler — July 29
Tickets for the full series or any combination of two or more shows will be available online at www.chastainseries.com or charge by phone at 404-233-2227 beginning Sunday, March 2, at 10 a.m. And James Taylor fans should note that buying tickets for both of the singer-songwriter’s performances does not count as a mini-series package, because the May 25 date is not part of the series.
The first thing that may strike some folks about the bill is that there’s very little of recent vintage on the bill. Tegan and Sara and Derek Trucks are probably the only artists on the bill without fuzzy memories of the ’70s. For some concert-goers, that’s the point.
The partnership of Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss might just be the coolest thing on the bill. The pair’s 2007 album, “Raising Sand,” is a surprising charmer and appeared on many year-end best-of lists. Their live show should be a real treat.
Tell us your take on the line-up. Will you pony up for the whole series, or will you just pick and choose a few favorites?

I’m in for the full meal deal! Great acts in a venue that is next to none …priceless! See you there?

If they could just make everyone shut up during the actual show, it would be a venue that is next to none. As it is, my $150 tickets to see Dylan were worth about 50 cents…. Season tickets cause people to go to shows they don’t care about - and talk the whole time!
Down with season tickets!!

Chastain is lame and so are all the boring fat season ticket holders it attracts. Hope they choke on their whole foods pasta!

If people would shut up and watch the concert, Chastain would be great. I won’t be going back.

Not a very exciting lineup. Will be hard to stay awake during most of these. Here’s hoping series B will have a little more life.

Horrible venue as far as music is concerned. The concerts are incidental to the celery-chewing insufferable yuppies which infest the “park” like the pests they are. Chastain is a place for these self-absorbed faux-elites to see and be seen. The sound quality is abysmal, which, of course, is of absolutely no consequence to the brie-gorged throng.

I got news for you…you wouldn’t have been able to hear much of Dylan even if people had been stone silent. Your tix were worth about 50 cents even when you stupidly paid $150 for them. He is a joke these days.

The series-B shows will likely be announced in late May or early June, according to the folks at Live Nation.

Here’s an idea; if you don’t like the shows, the venue, or the people, simply don’t go. That’s the great thing about America, you don’t have to go to concerts that you don’t want to see.
Chastain Park is a gem in the eyes and opinions of many people and personally, I really enjoy going.
Yeah people talk, the sound could be better, and it does seem to rain a lot, but then it rains a lot of evenings in Atlanta in the summer time!
It is what it is, and what it is, is a fun place for an evening out. Dinner and a show, sign me up!

Santana and Derek Trucks’ sites say they will also play Chastain 4-26 (in addition to the 4-25 show). Will this be out of series? This will be one great concert or concerts. And Dylan was great in 06 at Chastain, despite the chatter.

Brock, good to know Dylan was good that night. I wouldn’t know since all I could hear was the first date happening on one side and the marital problems on the other side. The first date went well, by the way.
Dylan is worth $150 if you can hear him. No question in my mind. That’s why I SMARTLY got my tickets, thankyouverymuch.

Oh, yes, I’d love to be at the shows!!! I love going to a gathering of aging hippies who have lost any semblance of southern manners in an ever increasing plasticized town. I can’t wait for the annoying 50 something, drunk mom and dad to dance in front of me all friggin’ night and ruin the concert experience. Oh, yes, count me in!!!

I made out with my girlfriend in the rain at Chastain watching KC and the Sunshine Band (actually during a rain delay at the very back of the lawn nosebleeds). You can always take adversity and turn it to your advantage…
C’mon people-quit being so freakin’ negative about everything!
Yeah, right, music purists-a sideline seat at Gwinnett is MUCH better…riiiiiggghhhttt…oh and good ‘ol Lakewood is SOOO charming (so I hear)…maybe the new amp in North Fulton can make you musical snobs happy-go enjoy the EAGLES (there’s a new band for you!)…

This is an insult. What about some black folk? Peabo Bryson, Jill Scott, Chrisette Michele, Gladys Knight, John Legend, Indie.Arie, George Benson, Anita Baker, Chris Brown, Alicia Keyes or Patti Labelle. I attended quite a few concerts last year at Chastain and to my surprise the largest crowds were some of the black artist. Yes I attended Leana Rimes and Clay Aikens concerts that were less than half full.

For a small southern city there are those who claim Chastain is a ‘gem’. Well it really is not when you travel to other real cities and see how things are everywhere else. Outdoor concerts are lame especially in the hot south. I suppose that is why it looks and feels like dinner theatre. Lame. I love the B-52’s but always lament their playing lame Chastain so I never go. I prefer airplane tickets to see them in a venue where you can appreciate their vibe..

Why is this line-up an insult? Give it a rest with “Where are the black folk?”. Why does every single blog on the AJC have to have race brought up by some blogger?

I know Raising Sand has gotten a lot of acclaim, but I just don’t get it. I bought it for my wife for Christmas and she doesn’t much like it either. There are two, maybe three, good tracks on the album. The rest drags so badly it’s ridiculous. Album of the year my eye.

To those commenting on the rain… a LIGHT rain at Chastain is wonderful. I saw Nancy Griffith a few years back in a light rain and the crowd was minimal. She invited everyone to come close and it became a charming performance with intimate conversation for those who weren’t afraid of melting in the rain and REALLY wanted to see/hear her perform.
I’ve seen many people perform here I would have never thought I wanted to see and have totally enjoyed myself every time. But, then my glass is always half full. :)

well some fairly good acts, but nothing worse than the ‘wine and cheese’ losers at a rock concert…really takes away from the party

Holy sheet! Ticket prices are through the roof this year. I’ll just pay the cop $20 to get in me in like I always do. Robert Plant is the only act worth paying $100 per ticket for.
