New Van Halen date… again

van halen 2008.jpg

The on-again, off-again saga of Van Halen’s spring concert tour is back on - for now.

The new date at Gwinnett Arena: Sunday, May 11.

Tickets for the band’s previously scheduled dates will be honored. Refunds are also available at the point of purchase.

In a press release last week, the band said Eddie Van Halen was taking unspecified “medical tests” prompting the group to postpone the tour through mid April. What is that medical condition? Feel free to speculate given his past drug problems. Or it may have simply been “GottagetawayfromDavidLeeRoth-itis.”

Van Halen sold out Philips Arena last month and concertgoers here ripped the show for sound problems. The band had a chance to rectify the situation two weeks later on Feb. 19 at Gwinnett Arena. But that date was postponed. The second date was set for this Wednesday, March 19. Then that was pushed back, too. So this is the third and hopefully last date.

Check out this photo gallery from the Philips Arena concert.

The poor folks at Gwinnett Arena must need serious doses of aspirin right now.

I saw both the Charlotte show, and Atlanta show. Talk about night and day??? Charlotte was simply amazing, Atlanta was the worst concert I’ve ever seen!

I listened to a Bootleg of the Charlotte today, here again…fantastic!

Eddie suffers from tongue cancer, which may be the reason for the postponements. I have to say, though, as someone who worshipped this band in the 80’s, it is sad to see that they’ve left Michael Anthony off the bill in favor of Eddie’s son Wolfgang. I just can’t get on board with this being the “real” Van Halen. Until it’s Dave, Eddie, Alex and Michael, and no one else, it’s just a substitute for the real thing. I used to think Eddie was a God. Now I think his band needs to be rescued from his ego.

Are you going to be there Rodney?

If so, let me know where you are sitting. I know a few 30 to 50 year old “Frat-boys” who would like to personally thank you for the kind words in your last article.

Think it’s only tongue cancer? Not that I have sources in the Van Halen camp, nor do I have any particular insight. But I wonder …

Eddie’s been saying in interviews over and over that he’s so proud of Wolfgang, and so pleased that they can tour together. The boy just turned 17 this week. Makes me wonder if he doesn’t anticipate being around for a tour when his son’s grown …

That and the fact that Diamond Dave signed on — when he and Eddie probably loathe each other — makes me wonder if both realized they might not ever have another chance to recapture the vintage VH magic …

Again, this is pure surmise on my part. But I wonder …

I thought the biggest problem during the first Atlanta show was Dave. He sang behind the beat all night… . Not sure who’s ego is bigger; Dave’s or Eddie’s… .

Eddie has had gradual loss of hearing over the last 10-15 years. That is the reason why the break in tour. Unknown what they were able to do for him. From what I understand, He is living a normal life, but in concerts, he has difficulties sometimes when all the instruments clash. It also has to do with why the sound guys are messing around with the sound. The remaining part of the tour should be indicative of the early concerts on the tour, which were flat out amazing.

Diamond Dave was singing “behind the beat” and the sound. You could tell his ear piece was killing him and was screwing him up. The poor guy couldn’t hear!!!

I’m telling you, the band wasn’t bad…the sound guys killed it for them.
