Mars Volta Canceled, Paramore Moved

riot-2-small_1196379185991.jpg

The latest from the operators of the tornado-damaged Tabernacle is this:

The Paramore (above) show scheduled there this Saturday has been moved to the Masquerade Music Park May 16. Tickets for the Tabernacle show will be honored; and since it’s moving to a larger venue what was once a sold-out concert now has some tickets available.

The April 5 Mars Volta show has been canceled. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

The Levon Helm Band’s April 9 concert is being moved to the Variety Playhouse, where - unlike the Tabernacle - there is no reserved seating. It’s all general admission.

And Lifehouse (April 12) and Elvis Costello & The Imposters (April 28) have been postponed to a date yet to be determined.

It’s looking like it’ll be early May before the Tabernacle doors will be open again, as the roof is being repaired now, reported Peter Conlon of Live Nation, the venue’s operator. “The damage is superficial though,” he added, “not structural.”

Did you have tickets to any of these shows? Were you hoping to go to Paramore, found out was sold out, and are excited again? Or have these changes made you decide to skip a concert?

I have been very excited about seeing LIFEHOUSE (not Lighthouse!) on April 12 (my friends and I have had our tickets since the day they went on sale), and I guess I was overly optimistic that the Tabernacle would be ready to go by then. Figures. I just really hope they announce the new date SOON and that my friends and I still will be able to go. At least they said it would be rescheduled, not canceled! I love Lifehouse and want a chance to see them as the headliner!

Since LiveNation has a virtual monopoly on concert promotion in this town, I’m skipping most of them. The prices have gone up at every venue, for nearly every artist. The venues are poorly maintained (its taken a tornado for them to touch the Tabernacle) and the security presence is severely underwhelming. Clear Channel/LiveNation has sucked the life out of Atlanta’s live music experience.

Awesome! I understand that some people may be bummed about Lifehouse being postponed, but I had plans to go to another concert that night in Macon (Cartel & Mercer U.) so now I’ll be able to see Lifehouse when they reschedule!

I have Levon Helm tickets I was pretty excited about. I like Variety Playhouse, but last time I was there they put standing room in front of the seats - no one in the first few rows could see and when they stood up, the back rows started screaming for them to sit down. It was a huge mess and I couldn’t see or hear the band. I’ll have find out if they’re going to be doing that foolishness for Levon.

Also, I hate general admission, and I was really happy with the seats I had at the Tabernacle. Oh well, can’t complain too much. At least he’s still coming!

Sounds like some negative Nancy is trying to justify his decision to not open his wallet or leave the comfy confines of his home. Have fun yelling at the kids on your lawn! In the meantime, I’ll be at Santana/Trucks, Petty/Winwood, Mark Knopfler and Return to Forever, among others.

I have tickets to the Levon Helm Band concert. I’ve been waiting for any word about the fate of the show. I’m both happy and sad about the venue change to the Variety Playhouse. Happy, because it’s a fine substitute for LH’s music and has a great sound system. But sad, because I paid extra for a good seat and now don’t have any assurance of getting one. (I also paid in advance for a Tabernacle parking ticket for the show.) I’m curious to see how the VP and the promoters are going to handle or compensate inconvenienced ticket holders like me.

“adam”: I love miserable little trolls like you who have nothing better to do than think about how superior their taste in music is and make fun of anyone else who likes something different. If you don’t like a band, try not going to the concert and shutting up about those who do. Oh, and see if you can master the post-message-once skill, too.

Jess, sometimes the Variety puts tables and seats in the front. Not sure if they’ll do that for Levon Helm. Frankly, I’m pleased this show got moved. I can’t stand it when the Tabernacle has reserved seating and puts folding chairs on the floor. They are very cramped and uncomfortable. The Variety’s acoustics are much better too. I just hope Larry Cambell is in Levon’s touring band. Rock on!

Thanks, Variety Playhouse:

They didn’t just put tables, which would have been fine. They packed in as many people as they could, all standing in front. When you get there early for a good seat and they stand a million people right in front of you, it kind of stinks. But I do like the Variety Playhouse much better, usually. Joe Ely’s show there was one of the best I’ve seen.

I had balcony seats at the Tabernacle.

I’ve seen Larry Campbell, but only with Dylan. It sure would awesome if he was there!

I saw the Tabernacle the morning after the tornado, and I was afraid of this. The stained-glass windows were blown out, and part of the roof was gone. But I was hoping they would postpone the Levon Helm concert, not move it. I am extremely disappointed with this move. I went online the very second the tickets went on sale and got third row center! I live downtown, just a few blocks from the Tabernacle, so I was going to walk. Now I’ll have to drive. And there is nowhere to park in Little Five. The Variety is okay, but it’s not third row center at the Tabernacle. I paid way too much money for these tickets, considering what they were and what they are now. Anybody want to buy my tickets?

Hey Ron,

Driving to concerts is no fun, for sure. But if you end up going, here’s a friendly parking tip for Little 5: heading south on Euclid, hang a left at the light just past Variety. It’s residential and I’ve never had trouble finding a spot on the street. Cheers!

Where is the point of purchase if you ordered at www.ticketmaster.com? You know, the ones with the absurd “service” and “convenience” changes?

the Variety does have the problem with those rows of seat being blocked by people standing. i’ve never sat in those middle seats, only on the side platforms, whcih are great. i don’t like the no liquor aspect of the Variety, and the balcony is too far back. i much prefer the Tabernacle balconies where you’re right on top of the stage. Long live the Tabernacle, best venue in ATL.

Ron, Tickemaster is showing Levon as having been moved and that refunds are available at the point of purchase. Recommend you contact TM cust svc for a refund.

I also see no mention on the Panic at the Disco concert the last weekend in April. Has that been rescheduled or moved?

Who cares about Lifehouse, they suck and Levon Helm a washed up rock star. What about The Mars Volta, the best band in the last 10 years. They were cancelled not rescheduled. They could not find a place for them to play? They found a place for the other crappy bands.

Allen, to each his own, but if you consider Levon a washed up “rock star”, you haven’t been paying attention.

Hey Allan, Levon the “washed up rock star” just won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. Not bad for an old geezer. I only wish he could have shared it with David Bromberg who was also nominated this year. And Jorma Kaukonen from a few years back, both of whom have played the Variety in recent memory. Rock on!

Glad to see the news on the Lifehouse show - really looking forward to this band hitting Atlanta. They are a rising star in the music world, and Atlanta will be a great venue for them.

allan - dude, shut up. You know as much about music as you do about fornication.

Variety Playhouse is hands down the best live music venue in town. The sound there is far superior to the Tabernacle unless you score a seat on the 2nd floor next to the soundboard at the Tabernacle.

If you don’t like people standing in front of you at a GENERAL ADMISSION show at the Variety Playhouse, don’t sit so dang close. Pretty simple, really. GENERAL ADMISSION guarantees nothing so you have to get there early for big shows.

Hey, Thanks and Jess, Larry Campbell and his wife Teresa Williams are traveling with Levon Helm for this mini-tour and will be at the Variety. Amy Helm is staying home with her newborn, though.

By Jess

March 28, 2008 2:14 PM | Link to this

johnc22: Yes, I know what GENERAL ADMISSION means. It doesn’t make it any less stupid to put standing people in front of sitting people. The standing room should in the BACK. Thought that was pretty obvious.

I DID get there eary - earlier than anyone else. Earlier, even, than the decision to put standing room in the front. Obviously I’ll sit back a little next time - but it still won’t keep people from yelling at each other.
