Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z In Atlanta

slideshow_494854_IMG_0010.JPG

Tuesday night at Philips Arena was hip-hop and hip-hop/soul as many had probably never seen it.

Chandeliers and string sections.

Grown couples in evening attire holding each other and dancing.

And a VIP section behind the sound board so packed with music industry powers that one had to expect whatever nearby hangar private jets fly into must have been packed.

That was the scene as multi-Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige and legendary rapper Jay-Z brought their sold out “Heart Of The City” tour to Atlanta last evening.

And even Blige couldn’t help but remark on it all from the stage: “It’s just amazing, amazing what Atlanta has become…Give yourself some love tonight please…I mean, Tyler Perry’s in the front row!”

And yes, that was Jay-Z’s reported new bride Beyonce in the front row of that VIP section on the floor, along with fellow artists Rick Ross, Monica, Jazze Pha, Kandi, Divinity (Beyonce’s bassist) and DJ Drama; executives Jermaine Dupri, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Kevin Liles, Lyor Cohen, Chaka Zulu, Devyne Stephens and Michael Kyser; as well as Usher’s producer brother J-Lack.

But on stage were the main attractions — an obviously, vocally-stronger Blige charging through a medley of hits including “Reminisce”; “Real Love”; “Be Happy”; the stand-out “No More Drama” and the more recent hit she recorded here with Atlanta’s Jazze Pha, Tricky Stewart and the opening act on the tour, The Dream, “Just Fine.”

Then after appearing with Blige at the beginning to do their collaboration, “Can’t Knock The Hustle,” and again midset, Jay-Z took the stage to do mostly longer versions of his catalog of hits. And while showing hometown love by seguing into local rapper Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know” — and bringing Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy on stage, was a highlight, the energy level went up higher when a picture of President George W. Bush flashed on the screen. Many booed. “You’re ready for change right?” Jay-Z asked. Then the picture changed to Senator Barack Obama — generating wild applause.

The capacity crowd hit frenzy level though when he started playing bits from his collaborations with Beyonce, such as “Crazy In Love” and “Upgrade U”.

Alas, she didn’t take the stage. But V-103’s Miss Sophia reported that she showed later at Dupri’s after-party with Jay-Z at Studio 72 (along with Usher and his wife Tameka; and rapper Nelly). Blige, Diddy and Lil Kim were due at Dreamz. And Elle Duncan of V-103’s “Ryan Cameron Show” was planning a birthday party at Luckie Lounge.

Were you at the show last night? (See the accessatlanta.com photo gallery ) If so, what grade would you give it? And did you have enough energy to make it to the many parties afterward?

Uncle Jesse, while you’re correcting NIA, where were you when your teachers were teaching about apostrophes? Also, you could benefit from a dictionary yourself. “Probley” is actually spelled “probably”. Quit runnin’ moonshine, and tell your niece, “Daisy”, to stop wearing those short shorts with her flat behind.

Anyway, I really hate that I missed the concert. Mary’s triumph is really shining through her music, and I have become a fan. I’m not really a fan of Jay-Z, but I do admire his business sense.

I attended the concert and it was wonderful. I have been a fan of Mary and Jay’s since their first singles hit the airwaves. So, to whomever that individual is that took precise minutes out of their own life to faithfully find time to criticize and make derrogatory comments, REALLY and I do mean REALLY need to get a life or seek professional help. SOON. You sound like that type that is on the verge of exploding and going on ashooting spree at your nearest college campus.

The funny thing is that no matter what ANY of you RACIST, IGNORANT people on this blog say — you will NEVER be able to take away their success. Also you will never in your MISERABLE, PATHETIC existence be able to amass one TRILLIONTH of their wealth. I guess all the white couples, singles and Asian concert-goers were DRAGGED THERE against their will. Go back to your miserable hole while Mary goes to her new $12 mil house that she paid CASH for (because she has it like THAT) and Jay Z will return to his HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars. Good day!

Um, Uncle Jesse, it wasn’t “me” who responded to you. The name is Why? What’s really funny is that you didn’t recognize my attempt to spell “running” in the dialect sense. Gee, you really do need to lay off the moonshine and go back to school. Perhaps, this time you will also learn that questions end with a question mark.

WOW…

I’m from Vegas and I just googled mary j and jay z because I am going to their concert here next weekend and wanted to find out how it went, and boy am I learning a lot about my country! YIKES!!!! I will be visiting Atlanta in the next couple months for a family reunion (not my family - my son’s family is black - I am white) so I am going so I can meet his other grandma, cousins, etc… I have to say that I am ashamed he will see people acting this way! I guess things are different on the West coast. So far I have not had any problems raising a mixed child. My family doesn’t have a problem with it, and his father’s family doesn’t have a problem with it. I can’t believe adults are acting like this. I LOVE Mary’s music, some of Jay Z’s, and I had hoped to get more info so I would know what kind of show to expect, but now I am more worried about my trip back east and my son’s future in such a hate filled world.

It’s funny how disliking certain forms of music automatically makes you a racist to some people. I don’t refer to people that dislike the music I enjoy as being racist, so I can’t understand your train of thought. I don’t like the Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Fall Out Boy, AFI, Maroon 5, Carrie Underwood or countless other artists who are white. I guess, according to most of what’s been spewed here, that would mean I hate white people. Or I’m automatically jealous of the money they pull in each year. (Which using in an argument is pathetic by the way.) Threads like this are completely pointless and full of hatred and stupidity from all races.

I went to the concert and I’m here to give you all my opinion of the concert. Mary J. Blige is a TRUE DIVA!!! She really knows how to give a great performance. Her classic hits had me on my feet dancing the entire time she was on stage. She really made the show a dynamic event.

Jay-Z was ok. I wasn’t really impressed with his stage skills. It reminded me of the concert he had at Madison Square Gardens and I wasn’t even there. I saw it on TV. He had the crowd hype at times and at other times he totally lost the crowd. He has a catalog of hits that everyone knows but there were some songs that no one knew what the hell he was talking about. He was ok.

If I had to rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 Mary J has a (5+) Jay-Z a (2.5).

As for the rest of the mess on this blog people get a grip. This is a blog for the concert goers who want to voice an opinion. All the rest of the garbage just sweep it to the curb. Don’t stoop down to dumb peoples level. Rise above it. Peace & Love.

I went to the concert and I was in awe the entire time I really went to see Jay-Z and could have cared less about Mary, but Mary killed every song. Everything was really tastefully done, and the orchestra in the background was so much better than just having a dj spinnin the tracks. Jay-Z’s show was unbelievable, but I can see how some people thought he would be boring because he sang a song from Reasonable Doubt and Pray from the new album (these songs weren’t familiar to everyone), and I think he lost a little of the female audience that had came to see Mary. In my opinion, this was hands down the best money I have ever spent on a concert, and I would pay a lot more to see them again. I won’t forget to mention The Dream, Memphis Bleek, Jeezy, and Diddy were all up on stage. I was, like I said, in awe the entire show. Unbelievable.

Handsome Lad, you’re absolutely right. I did allow myself to stoop to a level that is really beneath me. Uncle Jesse, I was wrong to involve your mama in our sniping. I sincerely apologize; but, you were wrong to assume and suggest that my children are b*******. A lioness will always protect her cubs. As I said before—and it applies to me also—don’t sling mud if you don’t want to get dirty.

I still wish I’d attended the concert. I’m not into Jay-Z, but Mary is definitely an inspiration. I have followed her transformation from 1992 debut to now. When she was going through her “drama”, I wasn’t really into her. It changed with the “Mary” album. I really admire her and am glad to see her be truly happy.

It’s so sad how EVIL people can be and I guarantee you these same people go to church regularly and they think there’s nothing wrong with their racist behavior.

98% of the time when black people bring up race its in retaliation.

Good v Evil, what you’re seeing is concern and recognition of a culture of gun violence and drugs that is perpetuated and glorified by this type of music. When one of these kids gets shot and ends up in the ER guess who pays the bill? Lil’whoevers insurance co? yea right. When Lil’ whoever knocks up his girlfriend, who pays the bill? Who pays for the food and shelter for Lil whoevers baby and baby mama? When Lil’ whoever kills someone to support his crack habit, who pays for the litigation and incarceration? As far as this particular blog, it was not asking for a personal opinion on Hip-Hop or Black people. For some reason, people like yourself come on here to voice their personal opinion on something that wasn’t even the question at hand. Is it that you just want to get a rise out of people or do you not have anything better to do with your day? Actually, when I see Black or any other race in the wrong, yes I will say something and yes I have. Right now I am talking to you though. So you don’t have to think so, I know so.

I think white folks and black folks are always gonna jib-jab like brothers and sisters but we all know deep down we wouldn’t be who we are without one another. We all know that we are Americans first and have and will always stand together. I’m just pokin fun here. Not trying to pi$$ anyone off so I’m gonna slink on off now. peace (i’m holding one fist in the air).

To “the Man” and all the other ignorant people that are implying that African-Americans are on drugs and are nothing but criminals and murderers, for your information the majority of serial killers are white (i.e. Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Gary Hilton-the hiker that killed Meredith Emerson and possibly others, and Ted Bundy, to name a few). When was the last time you heard of African-American teenagers going into a school and killing their classmates, i.e, Columbine, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold? The largest percentage of crystal methamphetamine users are white!! I am so tired of people turning a topic that has nothing to do with race (this blog was supposed to be about the Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z concert, for crying out loud!!!!)into a racial issue. Stick with the topic at hand and remember what your mother taught you…”if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!”

First of all Uncle Jesse, don’t get upset because U2 did not have a concert this week! Second, your opinion means nothing to anyone. You need to do two things… grow up and shut up. The bottom line is “hip-hop” is running things and Good Ol’ Boy Bands are out! stick to the bar brawls and leave the concerts that people can relate to, to the grown and sexy. You truly show your ignorance. Stop wasting time and key strokes. Build a bridge and get over it…Hip Hop is here to stay! P.S. - your wife loved the concert.
