Rate Chris Brown, Tom Waits, Whoever You Saw Live
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Teen R&B superstar Chris Brown (above) made a whirlwind stop in Atlanta this past weekend, with lots of local music power behind him.
Fellow pin-up Lloyd and newcomers Krave opened for the multimillion-seller, and their fellow Atlantan T-Pain made a surprise appearance to perform their single “Kiss, Kiss.” (See the photo gallery HERE).
Were you at Chastain Saturday? Think the performance was worth the rather steep ($58.75-$88.75) prices?
Or did you stop over at the Atlanta Civic Center for Atlanta Pride’s “Divas” concert, featuring Thelma Houston, CeCe Peniston and Frenchie Davis? Perhaps you joined V-103’s Ryan Cameron and other Atlantans who caught Brown (again), the LaBelle reunion, Atlantan J Holiday and others at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans? (See that gallery HERE).
Then again, surely some of you kept it more quiet (Van Hunt’s acoustic shows at Apache Cafe) and cerebral (Tom Waits at the Fox Theatre, Gil Scott-Heron at Sugar Hill).
In short, of all of the offerings, what great live music did you see this past weekend?

I did not think the concert was worth the $90 i paid for a ticket and by the way I bought 5 tickets. I was very disappointed. I came to hear Chris Brown but I heard more songs by other artists and would have been better off listening to the radio at home. Why was Lloyd singing Lollipop by Lil Wayne and why did Chris Brown spend 20 mins playing songs from artists from the ATL. I would feel better if the tickets would have been half the price. Maybe that is why Chastain was empty and this is the first time I have seen Chastain EMPTY!!

I attended the Tom Waits show at The Fox. I traveled from Virginia for the show. Friends traveled from England, Iceland, and California. On the plus side Waits played a lot of songs that he really had to reach way back in his catalog for. The band played for 2 1/2 hours without a break. The look and the sound of the show at the Fox was outstanding, and the sound of the band was much better than his last tour, the addition of a sax player added new layers to Waits’ recent concert outings. All in all a great show.

I also attended the Tom Waits show at the Fox. I traveled from PA. This is the fourth time I have witnessed a Tom Waits show. He is absolutely great every time; as he was Saturday night in Atlanta.

Flew in to beautiful Atlanta from Burbank, CA just to see Tom Waits at the Fox theatre on Saturday. As always, Tom did not dissapoint. It was the best foot stompin’, hand clappin’, eyeball tossin’, sing-a-long show in town! Right from the beginning you knew right away that you were in for something special. Perched atop a raised platform right out of some old side show, surrounded by his trusty megaphone, a bell from a boxing ring, a gong and a couple of over-sized kettle drums, Tom stopped clouds of white dust into the air as he bellowed out “Lucinda/ain’t goin’ down to the well”. He played a 26 song set that included gems such as “Down in the Hole”, “9th & Hennepin”, “On the Nickel”, “Hoist That Rag”, amazing performances of “Make it Rain” & “Eyeball Kid” and closing with “Anywhere I lay My Head”. He had the audience on their feet clapping along and singing out loud “Your Innocent When you Dream” and had us playing a little game of catch with the Eyeball Kid!

We went to Dave Matthews last night at Lakewood. That is a terrible venue/location. I couldn’t sit in the lawn area because there were too many drunks (young teens) that were throwing up, fighting, passing out on top of us and making the experience very unpleasant. I listened to the concert from the conession area. Dave tended to jam a bit too much. But I love his sound. Next time I will stay home and listen to his CD.

I took my two daughters to the Chris Brown concert, and they love it. I personally thought he could have finished some of the songs he started, but it’s for the kids. All in all it was a good show. Lloyd did his thang!!

Lyle Lovett, Sunday night at Chastain. As usual, one of the best shows of the year, and as usual, ignored by the AJC and its horde of “buzz” worshipers.
Try real music sometime instead of hype and (c)rap.
