“100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs” Includes 9 Atlanta Acts
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Is it better to come in at No. 99 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs” list than to not be included at all?
We’ll let Atlanta’s Lil Jon (above) & The East Side Boyz (featuring the Ying Yang Twins) ponder that ranking for “Get Low”, as we share the remainder of local acts in the “100”.
Oh - before we do that, the reason VH1 is doing this is it is part of its daily countdown this week, concluding with “VH1 Hip Hop Honors” (which actually happens Thursday, but airs Oct. 6).
OK, drumroll please for the Atlantans
(And what’s with all of the 8’s?)
No. 1 “Fight The Power,” Public Enemy
No. 23 “B.O.B.”, OutKast (who are scheduled to be profiled on the televised countdown Thursday).
No. 48 “One Love,” Nas
No. 58 “What’s Your Fantasy,” Ludacris featuring Shawnna
No. 67 “Feel So Good,” Mase
No. 68 “What You Know,” T.I.
No. 78 “Tennessee,” Arrested Development
and again, “Get Low” at 99.
See the complete list HERE; videos for Numbers 81-100 HERE and then weigh in on where your favorites fell (or perhaps, didn’t get included at all).

Unreal. This music is garbage. What is up with the names by the way? The thugs love to be negative “OutKast, Public Enemy, Arrested Develpoment,” etc. If not that they have the most random crap like “Jay-Z, T.I., Snoop Dog, Big-E, etc. Makes me laugh. I guess I should change my name to A-Dawg, or A.R.

Aaron, You’re an idiot. First of all, OutKast is not a “thug” group. There is nothing thuggish about them or their music. Arrested Development? What’s thuggish about that? Are you not aware of the fact that the word “arrested” can mean more than being detained for a crime? It can also mean, and I quote, “to bring to a stop” or “slow or make inactive,” such as in a person’s growth being arrested. Before you come on here and run your mouth perhaps you should educate yourself first so as to prevent yourself from appearing ignorant. by the way, your white sheet is showing through.

What in thunder’s name are you talking about? “100 greatest hip-hop songs”—indeed.Have any of you functional morons taken a music appreciation course? There is NO SUCH THING AS GREAT HIP_HOP—it is all 3rd grade monkey puke performed by the same. Talk about “dumbing down” America-these idiots are the leaders. Let’s ship all of them to Afghanistan—NOW—without weapons—and they can’t come home until they have memorized at least 2 Mozart concertos.

Funny how everything hip hop or about african americans always starts with a negative racist comment. AJC employees get first crack at it. You do the math.
Anyway, P.E. was a great choice for #1. My favorite group of all time.

Hey Voiceofreason are you high? I would NEVER EVER allow my kids to look like those thugs. My kids know that a baseball cap is worn forward with a small curve in the front bill. I laugh every time I see those thugs with a flat bill with the hat kinda sideways with the sticker and tag on it. WHAT A BUNCH OF MORONS! Makes them look so stupid. That along with pants that don’t fit. More great parenting by the thugs out there.

Here´s the thing about America: We´re the one country in the world where a black president should have already happened. And a female president too! But alas, there are too many people, like Aaron, who see it as a crime, not just different. All that is different and new is not a crime.
Also, I agree. There are more white southern boys with shaggy hair dancing to hip hop than any other group. BTW, Hip hop is not RAP…I think most people are confused.

Everything in this city has some sort of racial overtone. I’m so sick of it man!! If you don’t listen to hip-hop then live your life. If you do, then do so in your home, or with headphones on, or at a thoughtful volume. Can we all just get along?

Its apparent that you don’t have a clue that the world is much better with “THUGS” in it, because its what your children desire to be… To be a fly on the wall when your perfect “white world” comes to an end when your son or daughter brings that perfect “THUG” home……. Orlando that was a joke right? “A black president to clean up our messes?** Have you not seen how great “black leadership” is? Mayor Campbell, in jail, Mayor Franklin, city in major debt, Grady, Clayton County Schools, black parenting, etc. Once you people screw it all up you let whites move in a fix it. Look at places such as Clayton County, Fayette County, College Park, etc. All used to be nice areas until the thugs moved in and screwed it all up.

Music appeals to different parts of society. A lot of people(white, black, asian, hispanic) listen to “HIP HOP.” What you as a person listen to is your call, but dont stereotype all hip-hop as thug music. There are are several songs on this list that have no profanity, demeaning women or shooting people in the lyrics. Try listening to something before you condemn it for being thuggish. This message comes from an African-American educator who has listened to everything from NWA to Bruce Springsteen,Mozart to LL Cool J, and Doug E. Fresh to Micheal McDonald….

I love rap and I am voting for McCain. I don’t think politics and music should be related, but they obviously are.
No love for Skee-lo’s classic, “I Wish?”
I am obviously biased, but I think there should be more than 8 Atlanta songs that make the top 100. OutKast should have about 5, “Mr. Windle” could have made it, T.I. has a few that should be on here, and Ludacris should probably be represented more than just once.

I find it VERY amusing - and a little sad, too - when black people respond to (real or perceived) slights with racist comments of their own.
I also find it VERY amusing when black people talk about how they’re going to “clean things up”.
Judging by the way blacks have “cleaned up” Atlanta, and Detroit, and the city of Washington, D.C., and the Clayton County BOE, I think I’d rather stay dirty!
As far as rap’s influence on white teenagers is concerned … well, children and immature “adults” are easily influenced. (Witness the Obamessiah’s popularity with certain segments of the American population.)
A lot of rap “music” promises a non-stop party, where everybody’s rich, and everybody’s high, and everybody’s getting laid. Thus, it’s understandable that adolescents (of all races) might be enticed to join such a worry-free “lifestyle”.
But that’s just a fantasy. The reality is AIDS and other STDs, rampant crime, and worthless, lazy, deadbeat dads who would rather spent 300 bucks on an “authentic” jersey than take care of their child(ren).
BTW, I wonder if black people are going to riot if the Obamessiah loses the election. Given their reaction to the Rodney King verdict, I think it’s a fair question.
I look forward to reading your thoughtful and well-reasoned responses.

Given their reaction to countless events in history. I think that’s a fair question. But, I’m not going to go there. We live in this world together, it’s sad we don’t love one another. Seems like we only love those who we like (the ones who are just like us). I really wish we’d stop this foolishness. Is anyone w/me on that? Is anyone tired of all of this mess???

How many of you folks contend you are Christians? You know, good, church-going folks who love their fellow man (supposedly).

Uh, “Smalley,” pretty much all popular music of the last century has glorified a non-stop party where everybody’s rich, everybody’s high (on something), and everybody’s getting some action (or wanting to). It’s hardly the domain of rap or hip-hop.
But you’re right that it does appeal to adolescents, who just happen to be the primary buyers of music.
And Aaron, hip-hop/rap act names are no worse than heavy metal acts, which tend to be predominantly white.
It’s not easy being old and out of touch, is it?
Oh, and how are all those old, white male politicians in Washington doing these days? Really have things going swimmingly, don’t they?

Wow some things will NEVER change. As usual the race card is played out on a freakin BLOG that has nothing to do with race. All of this crap no matter if its from Blacks or Whites, would never get said if there is a forum where you can express your thoughts face to face. Every comment about race was made by a COWARD, black or white. The only thing you can do is ignore it from the other side. Do you really accomplish anything hurling racial epithets back and forth? Smalley Biggs, Aaron and all the rest of you bigots, please get a life. Hip Hop to black people is like country to white people, it tells a story, our story. We don’t sit around and criticize or degrade the story that you tell, so why should our story and story tellers be degraded? Why is that our story must be told by thugs, and yours by decent, upstanding, christian white folk? People are people, and until we can reach a common ground, and learn to love each other and live together, we will continue to destroy and deplete this beautiful earth that God has given to us. Get a life people. It does’nt matter who the president is, what matters is who he presides over. It does’nt matter what color his/her skin is, what matters is that he doesn’t care what color yours is. In order to reach that world order that so many of our great leaders have talked about, both black and white, we must, it is imperative that we set aside our differences and prejudices and learn to love the way we are supposed to love, and learn to live together, in support of one another. It’s not about Obama. It’s not about McCain, but it is about human prosperity and peace on this earth. Let’s stop killing each other in word, in deed, and in flesh…

Back to the subject at hand. The word greatest is rarely used to it’s full potential and meaning. When people say great, or greatest, what they really mean is pretty good. That is why such a list, for the most part, is useless. Surely a substantial # of these songs & artist belong in the sub-catagory of pretty-good. I would even argue, to achieve greatness, the list will have to be cut to 50.

As far as hip-hop, I like some of it, but I really don’t think there are enough good songs to create a top 100 list. It would be kind of like a Grunge top 100, as once you get past the top 20 or 30 the rest is crap.
The biggest problem I see with hip-hop is that it has become so popular that the rappers are crossing over, and quite frankly, rap needs to stay rap. It’s kind of like hard rock groups going pop .. it just shouldn’t happen.
Lastly, anyone who thinks that black politicians will help their own people is an idiot. Just look at all the good they have done their own people in the city of Atlanta for the last 30 years. Oh, wait, you will probably blame that on the whites as well. Politicians, be they white, black, latin, or whatever, are almost all the same. The ones that our different, and might actually help, never make it far enough up the political ladder to have a chance to help. It has nothing to do with race folks.

I am a white, 30-something, conservative-ish soccer mom who listens to hip hop. I am saddened and embarassed at the state of some of these comments. However, I can say that I’ve found the same amount of bias (not necessarily racial) toward country music. There are music snobs and there are open-minded people….looks like we have a bit of both here today.

How about the mayor of Lithonia? What a winner she is! Cynthia McKinney? Yet another. Just look at the picture of the thug on this page. What is wrong with him?

Wow, I’m laughing in amazement at the comments from people like Mark and Becky. It never ceases to amaze me how big, bold, and brash white people are behind 1) the wheels of their cars 2) or sitting behind a keyboard. When they are anywhere in the vicinity of someone who they think may have the capacity to do them harm they are nothing more than spineless, weak cowards. Mark and his meth w** Becky know full well that if they spouted off such comments around black people they would more than likely end up knocked out on there “a**”, or worse yet dead. Black people are more confrontational and aggressive by nature; white people have to ingest hard drugs to attain the level that we exert naturally. That’s why they clam up when you jog past them on the Silver Comet Trail, that’s why they hush up when you sit next them in a restaurant and give you that coy little G.W. Bush smile all the while hoping deep down inside that you wont hit them. White people are hilarious to me, they are weak, there women are ugly and by the time they turn 35 they look as though they are 55. What’s even funnier is that I grew up in a working class white neighborhood in Philadelphia, PA (South Philly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the whites in Philly make these inbred yokels down south look like spineless jellyfish. At least back home if a white person didn’t like you they had the cajones to say it to your face, here in Atlanta they hide behind message boards and behind closed doors to say what they really feel. Maybe it’s because so many blacks down here have money and the white feel intimidated by that. It must be because I’ve lived in or visited almost every major city in America, and only in Atlanta are whites as petrified of blacks as they are here. Must be the good ol’ south!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Chris
LOL!!!!!!!!!!! No Chris try again, so you give me a year before I’m shot down or thrown in jail??? I’ll take the odds on that bet; let’s go to Vegas shall we? I live in Roswell so I’m far removed from the violence that plagues other areas here in the metro Atlanta area; and I’m currently a grad student at GA State and I have a successful for profit business and I’m currently waiting on my 501 (c) (3) status to clear so that my non-profit can get off the ground. So I doubt the latter will happen either, I received my undergrad at Temple in Economics and most of my classmates where white women ( of whom I deflowered quite a few who had bigoted parents like yourself) and I learned very quickly what makes “you people” tick. I’m your worst nightmare Chris, a young intelligent black male who sees what “you people” are all about but yet isn’t ashamed to say it. You don’t like what I said?? Go suck a big black one, or better yet work up your nerves enough to go confront the next black person you see, and tell him how you really feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But that wont happen, white people are to scared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You and I both know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah I almost forgot one thing—- GO EAGLES!!!!!!

Alright, first off let me say that i am white and i love rap music. Most of the songs listed are rap songs, not hip-hop. there is a difference. Hip Hop is songs like Lollipop(LW), Whatever You Like(TI), Kiss Kiss(CB). Rap is a whole different type or style.
Secondly, all your responses just show how ignorant the human race is. There is no way a white man(Aaron) should have said anything derogatory, i personally have no idea why he would read an article that has a topic of which he hates. And i dont know why everyone feels they need to turn things into a race issue. Hip-Hop has nothing to do with being black. I know me, and many many friends are white and love the hip-hop/rap music. I know that the majority artists are black…but there are white artists.
Lastly, how did the presidential race get involved in this topic? Honestly that is all that is talked about, why bring it up when talking about music? Its rediculous, its a month away anyways…just be patient and in 36 days we will all know who the president is. no reason to debate about that right now when the topic was obviously meant to focus on succesful Georgians in Hip-Hop

Everyone,
It’s very is for someone to hide behind blogging or voicing opinions on the internet. These individuals are the main ones that are timid to voice there views in public. Grow up idiots. It’s a shame your parents raised you all in this way. Your day will come. Believe me, it will. We’ll see who will be blogging then.

Hahah…that Aaron dude is funny. But don’t get caught up in his lies. He has no kids, knows nothing of music. He speaks only to create divisiveness. He is probably not registered to vote and if he is which I doubt; then as he has shown in these post, he knows not what he speaks so he is voting off of slanted views and has no ability to digest reality. He is educated by perception and based on his responses is lying to create friction and or possibly homosexual in fabric.

No Knucklehead, we didn’t label ourselves as African-Americans. We’re not from Africa, and surely don’t feel American. And please me believe me when I say this; There’s some country’s in Africa that are just as beautiful and better ran than the U.S.. So don’t believe those backward as pictures, and video shots of Africa you see on television, Do your on research son, don’t believe everything you see on TV. Oh by the way, White people commit just as much crime as black people, but you white boys don’t want to embarass yourself so you don’t mention those stories. But tell you what, go check out the courthouse, you’ll be amazed.

First of all, Congrats to the ATL artist that made the list. I also have a few favorites that didn’t make the list. Second, to comment on this blog a thug is (a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer) Sounds like the same people that brought Africans to America. I think some of the responses to this blog are outrageous, but aleast it is known how alot of non black southerns feel. Lastly, now when they smile and talk to us at work, we know what is really on there mind.

I love, love, love, rap music. Yes there is definitely a difference between hip hop and rap. Old school kills new school. The list is bogus. Mase, Nas, and Public Enemy are not from Atlanta. I won’t even comment on the racism and ignorance that has been posted. It now an Atlanta thing it’s an ignorance thing that not all southerners share. Please don’t put me in that category as a native.

Kemmet Aziz from Philly, you are a total a*******hole. You are probably a thug with gold teeth who listens to this rap trash really loud in your tricked out car and think you intimidate and impress everyone because you are such a rebel and you are fighting the power. We are all just laughing at you because you are a joke.
Would I be scared to say anything to you if I saw you in person? Yeah, probably, because I would be afraid you would pull out a gun. Guns are for weak people like yourself who are cowards. One on one, without weapons, I would kick your a$$. But you would have to use a weapon because you are a weak, little pathetic piece of thug trash just like your heroes 50 Cent, Tupac and Snoop.
