The ACLU Honoring Jermaine Dupri in L.A. Today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta music mogul Jermaine Dupri will receive the Bill of Rights Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California today at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.
He and fellow honoree, NBA great and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson will be celebrated for “a long history of philanthropic work, and will be recognized for their shared views on community uplift and development,” a press release from Dupri’s publicist said. “Dupri has been a long time member of the board of directors of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN). He’s also worked to repeal the Rockefeller Drug Laws, designed a signature pair of Cartier sunglasses to benefit the Hurricane Relief Fund, and has been a significant voice for the “Rap the Vote” campaign.”
The rapper, songwriter, producer, author and president of Tag Records (pictured above with longtime girlfriend Janet Jackson) will join Rosa Parks, Barbra Streisand, Martin Scorsese, Harry Belafonte, Ellen Degeneres, Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds — also recognized by the ACLU of Southern California in this way.
Think Dupri gets the recognition he deserves locally - and/or nationally - for what he’s done outside of the music business? Know of any others on the local music scene who are really making a difference in the community?
