Boris Kodjoe to join historic ‘Cat’ on Broadway

Atlanta-based actor Boris Kodjoe, who People magazine has called one of the world’s most beautiful inhabitants, is headed to Broadway to perform in the celebrated, all-black cast of the Tennessee Williams classic “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

Kodjoe joins the historic production on April 15, playing the seething, complicated Brick opposite James Earl Jones’ Big Daddy, Phylicia Rashad’s Big Mama and Anika Noni Rose’s Maggie the Cat. The Austrian-born star (“Soul Food,” “Madea’s Family Reunion”) fills in for Terrence Howard through May 4.

Kodjoe — who lives in Atlanta with his actress wife, Nicole Ari Parker, and their two young children — is using his Broadway gig to benefit one of his favorite community-service organizations, The Spina Bifida Association of Georgia.

The association has organized a Big Apple tour — “Broadway Bound to See Boris Kodjoe,” which includes a chance to meet the actor after a performance of “Cat” at the Broadhurst Theatre — for May 2-4.

Jim Okula, CEO of Spina Bifida of Georgia, says 60 packages will be available at an estimated cost of $1,200. The price includes, airfare, two nights in a hotel, bus transfers, pre-show dinner at Carmine’s restaurant and other amenities.

Kodjoe’s connection with spina bifida is personal. His 3-year-old daughter has the birth defect. Okula describes Kodjoe, a former model and college tennis player, and his wife as “quiet,” “humble” and “genuine.”

“From the time we first met, their attitude has always been ‘What can we do to help?’ ” Okula says. “Boris and Nicole hosted The Dinner for Prevention of Spina Bifida last year and are involved in other upcoming events for the Spina Bifida Association of Georgia.”

For information about the tour: 404-502-1137.

Stay tuned for updates and, in the coming days, an interview with Kodjoe.

While I can not attend the performance, I want to say a prayer for his daughter that God will keep her safe and continue to nuture her. I use to work for the Paralympic games and know about this disease first hand. To God be the glory.
