I’ve been to all of the steak houses mentioned on many occasions. Hal’s is good, but I guarantee you that all of the people that say it is the best have never been to Kevin Rathbun Steak…it’s superior, by far. New York Prime is #2, Bone’s #3.

Have never been to Hal’s so I don’t know about them. I will try it. As for the rest, I don’t think that they can touch Chops. Bones was OK, but not anywhere close to as good as Chops or Rathbuns. Stoney River is just an overpriced Long Horns if you ask me. Ruths Chris is good if you like fried steak, but personally, I think Waffle House fries a better steak than them for the money.

NY Prime has the best Pittsburgh Style filet in town. Hal’s is as big as a bowling ball and good too. Great scene there. Go to Johnny’s Hideaway after dinner to keep the vibe. I love Rathbun and think he is the best chef in the city but steakhouse has too much ESTROGEN for me! The sides there are the best though. How about that garlic bread and fried oysters at Hal’s?!?! mmmmmm Bone’s sux and relies on nothing but the old school name. Golden Corral is better than Chops. Best steak not at a “steakhouse” is BLUE RIDGE GRILL

Pampas in Alpharetta by far has the best steaks in Atlanta

Just visited with friends for my 60th birthday and had an excellent time. The waitress gave us excellent service and advise on ordering.

This is an evening out that will be more than just eating out. You can tell everyone in the place is having a great time.

Go all out with the Empanadas Pampas corn and cheese appetizer (which actually served 4 in our party), iceberg wedge blue cheese salad, brick filet steak, with sauteed wild mushrooms and garlic creamy spinach sides.

Top it off with the wonderful dessert crepes prepared at your table. Thin, light, and luscious!

Buckhead will be envious.

  1. For the umpteenth time, nobody cares about how you cook steak at home. This is a poll for the best RESTAURANT.

  2. Nobody has the best steak “by far”. I’ve been to Bone’s, Rathbun, and NY Prime, and the steaks are all very close in quality.

  3. Only a woman would give 2 sh!ts about “people watching” in a steakhouse.

Right now my vote would go to Rathbun.

I’ve been to so many cookouts where the grillmaster cooks steaks on a medium hot fire and they always turn out OK at best. The key is to get your fire (gas or charcoal) as piping hot as possible and don’t be afraid to put some char on them. This aint like cooking a boneless skinless chicken breast. Oh yeah, my vote is for Rathy, good stuff

Bone-in ribeye at New York Prime is the best.

And whoever specified a “filet” should not be eligible to cast a vote; you’re eating beef, not steak - steak worth voting on has 3 crucial components…it’s prime, it’s dry-aged and it has FAT in it.

And no, i needn’t defend my answer…those who know, know.

Shocking that you list Kevin Rathbun Steak. Had their steak last weekend and it was tough, plus there was so much butter on the steak, in the spinach, on everything at the table, I woke up thinking I’d eaten a pound of butter. My friends and I all agree. It was NOT good and we won’t go back.

Hal’s is definitely a top-tier restaurant (we’ve eaten there at least a dozen times over the years) but I’m surprised by the # of people who put it on top. I’m equally surprised that only one person (so far) mentioned Killer Creek (not that it’s my #1 but definitely in the rotation).

I’m something of a steak buff and can’t really say I have an absolute favorite but here are the ones we kind of rotate among (in no particular order): Ruth’s Chris (Sandy Springs), McKendricks, Capital Grill, Bones, Killer Creek and Hal’s. I’d also count myself among those who’d put their own grill up against some of these places anyday - we’re lucky enough to have a Fresh Market right outside our subdivision so we can get the top quality, 2+” strips (my fav) or other cuts…

Thanks for all the comments about the locations for the best steaks in metro atlanta. I plan to check out some of the top selections. However, it would be nice to know the price range at the various restaurants. Many of their websites do not list the prices, yes I know listing prices may be considered uncouth but in these economic times I think it is a real concern. Somehow, best and value are related.

Hal’s is definitely the best. And I think Ruth’s Chris may be the most overpriced food in the history of mankind. Their steak is SO not worth it.

I have to agree with others: The best steak is from my backyard grill.

The steaks at Atlanta’s famous restaurants (Bones, Chops, Capitol City, Ruth Chris, Hals, etc.) are INEDIBLE. Try ordering a medium rare filet mignon and see how many of them cook it correctly. Not one! The side items are also poor.

If I had to vote for a restaurant, it would be Fogo de Chao. Technically not a steakhouse but a good place to be a carnivore.

I’ve eaten at them all…Bones, Ruth Chris, Houstons, Longhorn, Stoney River, Aqua Terra, etc….The best which blows them all away is Kevin Rathbun’s in Inman Park. I drove all the way from Lake Lanier to try it and it is the best.

I’ve had them all…Bones, Ruth Chris, Chops, Hal’s, Stoney River, Houstons, Longhorn and by far the best is Kevin Rathbun’s in Inman Park. He blew them away and has won all the national Chef awards to prove it. I drove from Lake Lanier just to enjoy his steaks and other fine menu items.

A little hole in the wall in Downtown Douglasville called Gumbeaux has a great steak. A little kick since it is a cajun place. Can’t hardly get in the place on Friday and Saturday nights. Well worth it as well as the typical cajun dishes they serve. Very authentic cajun style place.

Palm, Mortons, and McKetrick are very good. Next best is my kitchen.

Fogo da Chao is a good place for meat and I love to go there for lunch.

I have the cookbooks from Morton’s and McKetrick and they have been very helpful.

I have been a fan of Hal’s for years. After reading this post, I decided to try Rathbun’s last night. My conclusion: If you could combine Hal’s steak with Rathbun’s sides, you’d have the perfect meal. Hal’s has the best steak ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Rathbun’s is indeed the most overrated steakhouse I’ve even been to - and I’ve been in many. Charred to a crisp, consistently overcooked, and smothered with so much overpowering seasoning that I couldn’t taste the steak. Tried 3 times and had the same experience. I will never go back.

Best steak in Atlanta? McKendricks - hands down. They know how to properly cook and serve an incredible steak.

I just don’t get all of the gushing over Hal’s. It’s just OK in my estimation. I think there are a number of great steaks in the city, but the experience at any restaurant is a combination of things. I like the steaks at Chops better than Bones, but I like the service and the wine list at Bones better than Chops. I love Rathbun’s food, but I don’t like the 45 minute wait with a reservation and the cramped table in the middle of the room. And so forth. And I will agree with the comment above that the meat at Bacchanalia is always top notch and very hard to beat.

Surprised no one has mentioned New York Prime. I’ve only been there once, but it was definetely one of the most distinct steaks i’ve ever had in Atlanta, a very smoky flavor; I had the filet. My backyard grill is the #1 steak in Atlanta, beats the hell out of Bones. Hal’s is great, its the BUTTER and SALT that make HAL’s steak taste so good. Haven’t tried Rathbun’s steaks yet, but “Rathbuns’” service has let me down on more than one occasion.
