Fresh Air BBQ down in Jackson. Been around forever, always good, fantastic cole slaw also. All you good folks north of I-20 don’t come this far south to eat-that’s your loss; the AJC continues to ignore it. Butts County folks continue to swear by it.

Sam & Dave’s wins hands down!!! I’ve been on a Georgia BBQ tour for a few years & the folks at Sams’ know their Q. Fox Bros was pretty good when they 1st started at Smith’s but the quality of the food has went south & they are very inconsistent. Harold’s, what a joke, bland meat served with Tabasco sauce. Slope’s is average & over hyped, same with Dreamworks. Maddy’s , Rusty Nail & Fat Matt’s = boring & bland… Daddy D’s & Dusty’s are substandard fare, Shane’s, Sonny’s, Famous Dave’s = McDonalds…. Can’t comment on Rollin Bones & can’t remember if I eaten at Pig N Chick …

If Fat Matt’s wins again, it’s just proof that Atlanta is mostly populated by transplanted Yankees who don’t know any better. Talk about nasty, greasy, boiled-then-grilled-ain’t-got-no-smoke-flavor ribs.
I’ll take Fox Bros, Sam n Daves, Swallow, or Pig n Chik any day of the week. And twice on Sundays. Especially since Chik-fil-a isn’t open.

Whoever nominated Maddy’s (or Fatt Matt’s for that matter) must like their ribs steamed or boiled, then grilled. Sorry, that’s not BBQ.
Best in or around Atlanta is Fox Bros. Any inconsistency problems they had upon opening have been long worked out, and they are putting out the finest pulled pork and ribs in the area. Plus their greens and mac-and-cheese both dominate.

I can’t find barbecue to compare with my Daddy’s since he closed his barbecue restaurant in the early 1990’s! He owned and operated Melear’s Barbecue in Union City, GA on Hwy. 29. My Dad loved his job and never missed a day of work—he was there from sun up until sun down! He was once asked if he ever played golf and he said, “My ‘hole-in-one’ is when someone leaves and says ‘What a great meal!” My brother said that he would pay $50.00 to just once more have an “all-you-can-eat” plate of Daddy’s barbecue and I wholeheartedly agree!! If you can find me a place even close to Daddy’s, I’ll be there!!

Best overall BBQ has to be Sam & Daves BBQ1 in Marietta. Beef brisket is outstanding. Ribs and shoulder are second to none in metro area.
Swallow at the Hollow is a treat any time. Homemade everything down to the bread.
Harold’s is good on a cold day if you like stew. Shoulder tends to be dry.
Daddy D’s is a joint that is good for a stop.
Williamson Bros always pleases the pork hankering.
Dreamland is fine for the smaller chain BBQ
Cafe Pig, Speedy Pig, and OB’s alo deserve a nod for consistently good BBQ.
Fat Matt’s is rediculously bad. Ribs should never be boiled. no flavor.
Rolling Bones was horrible. Ribs were over cooked. Barely edible.
I’ve seen a few above that I haven’t tried. I guess I see some lunch stops in my future.

BBQ is remarkably regional & subjective.
I don’t typically do ribs in Atlanta because there’s no Sticky Fingers here. Figure that out!
Favorite beef brisket and sides is Sam & Daves. Their pulled pork is also very good. Favorite pulled pork is between Corky’s in Gwinnett & Sam & Dave’s. Williamson Brothers is pretty good typically for chopped pork. Favorite chicken is surprisingly, Sonny’s - many use rotisserie rather than smoked. Best bbq beans is either JRs in Gwinnett or Sonnys.

To the person who mentioned good music at Swallow at the Hollow: That certainly doesnt hurt the Q experience. To whoever has been on a Q your for a,couple of years and hasn;t been to Rollin Bones yet: You need a new tour director! More to come Phil

People, People, People, Please Shanes is not real Bar-B-Que their pulled pork sandwhich is cooked in a crock pot with liquid smoke and bar-b-que sauce. I live down the street from Shanes and I pass it everyday and I never smell smoke if you can not spell the smoke then the place is a joke. But to be honest my husband makes the best Bar-B-Que from the rub to the sauce we will opening soon in the Henry County area so old schoolers get your A game on cause a newschooler with oldschool game is coming to town….!!!

The best BBQ inside the perimeter is Harold’s on McDonough, down by the Federal Pen. Order the chopped pork plate, 1/2 & 1/2 (trust me), and you’ll also get to taste the best Brunswick stew on the planet. Check it out next time you have to rescue your car from A-Tow, right around the corner on Lakewood. It’ll make you feel a lot better.

No good places ITP (inside I-285). Tried most mentioned above. Only eat them if you have some syrup of Ipecac with you.
The closest “great” BBQ is Sprayberry’s in Newnan. It was the hangout of Lewis Grizzard. That says enough.
The best in Georgia is Sconyer’s BBQ in the other “Big A”—Augusta. They have served every president in the White House since Jimmy Carter’s dictatorship. The T-loin (R) with a loaf of Sunbeam, some authentic Brunswick stew (not this chopped vegetable crap with pork seasoning but real hogshead), Cole slaw and pickles is heavenly. This is BBQ the way we eat it in the South—the only way to eat it.

None of you know what you are talking about. First off I’d like to say that my Dad’s barbeque is hands down the best in the state. Unfortunately for yall, he doesn’t cook the good stuff unless you’re someone special. With that being said, a very close second is Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ. Their reputation preceeds them as the juiciest pork on the market. I mean it tastes like it just came off the pig. Plus their Real Pit flavor can’t be beat. So juicy. And their variety of sauces is unbeatable. Plus, they have an “All You Can Eat” option (which me and Daddy get every time). I’m on the road a lot during the week, and Sonny’s even has multiple locations so I can sit down to some great BBQ just about anywhere in Atlanta. Thank you Sonny’s for being God’s gift to Barbeque.

Now I love a good cold beer with mine, but I have found that most of the best places around don’t serve any alcohol at all,(they don’t need to). This will probably upset a few people, but be honest. A good BBQ plate & Sweet tea ain’t to bad. Wallace in Austell & Harolds by The Pen. are Two of the best around.

Slopes has pretty good pulled pork, though a bit dry - just add sauce. Fatt Matt’s and Dreamland’s pork is fatty to me.
I see lots of comments on Shane’s. They do use electric smokers, but pork, ribs, and chicken are all very good. Just because they are a chain doesn’t mean they’re not good. They also have excellent Brunswick Stew.
And check out Harold’s for the best Brunswick Stew and Cracklin’ cornbread.

Best BBQ depend upon where you are originally from? Pork or Beef? Carolinas or Texas? I’m not an expert on Pork so I will defer to others but my pick for the Best Brisket outside of Texas has to be SmokeJacks’s 29 South Main Street, Alpharetta, GA. No parboiling or liquid smoke just the real thing! If you are really bold try the “Burnt Ends” they are the best.

The best BBQ by far is at Thompson Brother’s BBQ in Smyrna! I’ve lived here about almost 15 years now, and these guys have hit the target dead center! No one in town has ribs or chicken like them! I mean it’s really out of this world! I you had to try only one thing, I get the Whole 9 single! It has the best of what they do best, and that’s everything! But, it doesn’t stop there. They bake too! One of the brother’s make home made pineapple upside-down cake and lemon pound cake with lemon icing. They make their mother proud! These boys are doing it better than anyone in town! I’d bet the farm on it!

I like HomeTown in Lawrenceville on Highway 29. The pulled pork is to die for and the original sauce is just sweet enough to make your tongue slap your brain out trying to savor all the rich flavoring. Atlanta Ribs I crave their meat platter of pulled pork and beef brisket. My husband and I go at least once a week. We love all of the BBQ. If you are a fried okra or mac n’ cheese fan you’ve gone to the right place. All of the salads are huge! I’m picky about BBQ..Atlanta Ribs is my favorite in Atlanta! The owner takes time to come out and check on you and your meal…he really makes you feel at home! The blues music in the background makes me feel like I’m back in Kansas City where I grew up listening to the blues while eating great BBQ! Wonderful atmosphere!

ATLANTA RIBS My family and I enjoy the huge baby back ribs that are super tender and their homemade three cheese mac N cheese is awesome. I got to say the sauce was the best I have ever had in the area. Their Brunswick stew is very unique with its own flavor not typical of other BBQ places. They also catered my sons 1st birthday and they went all out for us. Not your typical BBQ. They have great texas style brisket and other traditional favorites, along with smoke jumbo shrimp, huge wings and smoked turkey sanwich. The homemade bannana pudding they bragged about held up to their standards. They are a must try and are locally owned. I think the owner lives in the area for quite some time now.

If you like microwave, reheated or computer BBQ, you’ll love Slopes & Shanes.
For real authentic Georgia BBQ, I personally endorse the following:
(1) FRESH AIR BBQ - JACKSON, GA
(2) OLD CLINTON BBQ - CLINTON, GA
(3) SPRAYBERRY’S BBQ - NEWNAN, GA
(4) HAROLD’S BBQ - ATLANTA, GA
These places have been around 40 years or much longer. Fresh Air since 1929. There’s a reason.

There is no good BBQ in ATL anymore. As KR comments, BBQ is “regional and subjective,” and ATL isn’t a region anymore. There’s great food, but it ain’t BBQ. Get OTP and visit several of the long-time, family-run joints. You’ll find something you like better than anything you’ve had in ATL. I’m glad to see Wallace’s in Austell finally getting some recognition in these types of polls. To experience what KR means by regional, go to Wallace’s and then to Hudson’s in Douglasville. They are very similar in style and both are incredible. They may not be your style, but if they are, they can’t be beat. Get the outside pork.

They even have sinks outside the bathrooms to wash your hands. I have seen them on Urban Spoon as one the the best in Atlanta. ALL the best for them

Now I know a few things about Q. There are several places mentioned that re quite good. Sam & Dave’s ranks pretty high, but if you truly want the the Best BBQ in Atlanta, then you need to make a short drive to Jasper and eat at Bub-Ba-Q. Now I have had BBQ from every corner of Ga. and there is nobody that does it like him. The man has become a regular on the BBQ competition circuits and has enough trophies to prove his devotion to producing great BBQ. I challenge you to find a better Q shack around

Bottom line. There are no good BBQ joints in Atlanta. Harold’s nope! Williamsons Bros. Nah. Sam and Daves no way. Spiced Right no. Sonny’s gag!!! Fat Mat’s, Maddys, Fresh Air, Sprayberrys, Swallow at the Hollow no, no, no, no and no!!! To get good BBQ you must travel 100 miles south west to Columbus, GA or Phenix City, AL. In Columbus it’s Macon Road BBQ or Brennen Road BBQ. Just stop and ask for directions, most folks know where they are. In Phenix City, it’s Smokey Pig BBQ. All three places are barbeque heaven. Tryum out. You can thank me later.

Fresh Air in Jackson. Besides great meat and Brunswick Stew, the atmosphere is perfect for BBQ. The place looks the same as when your parents, grand parents and great grand parents ate there. Staff is great too. You better like a vinegar sauce though, and get extra sauce if you buy it by the pound. If you take it home, don’t forget the buns.

Fresh Air BBQ in Jackson is a taste of Heaven ! Simple, basic menu. It has changed little after nearly 80 years in business. The drive is worth it. Get some to go and eat at nearby Indian Springs State Park. On the way back to Atlanta, you’ll want to stop back and get a pound or more to take home!

Head north to the mountains in beautiful Hiawassee where you will find what I consider to be the BEST BBQ you’ll find anywhere…..at Smoke Rings BBQ. I’ve tried almost every item on the menu over the past several months, and everything is spectacular. The portions are very, VERY generous (and they do give out doggie bags!) with exceptionally reasonable prices. One of my favorite items are the PEACH BBQ Beans. Talk about yummmmmmmmy! Wallace in Austell is fantastic BBQ. Sonny’s: they call that BBQ? NOT! Dreamland, great flavor, but I have been several times and never had an enjoyable meal there due to an over-abundance of fat in their meat; won’t go back. IMO - Slopes does a good job, shouldn’t be overlooked. Three Bros in Ball Ground is well worth the visit. Beetles in Woodstock, great range of sauces, excellent BBQ.
It is hard to find good Brunswich stew in town, most is too sweet. I’d love to hear where to find good stew locally.

FATT DAPP’S SMOKE HOUSE in Mableton has the best damn BBQ in Atlanta!! You will get hooked!! Love goes into that food. Nothing is spared or skimped. Your stomache will be ready to explode before you are ready to stop eating! The slaw and potato salad are to die for and there aren’t even any words for the delicious meats. Try the bbq pork on texas toast and the ribs. I swear you can taste the south in every single yummy bite. It’s worth the drive from anywhere in Atlanta. It’s a small smokehouse that’s drive-up and take away or order from the window and sit outside. If you think you know what BBQ is all about, I dare you to challenge everything you think is Holy and see how the term “Soul Food” was born. You’ll be glad you did. Thank me later. LOL

i lived in atlanta for three years before moving to alabama for six years; i have been back in atlanta for three years.
the bbq in atlanta does not merit having a “best of” listing.
the only bbq in in metro atlanta that is even worth stomaching is the swallow at the hollow in roswell.
if you want good bbq (and are willing to travel), here is a “best of” list worth publishing:
Big Bob Gibson’s in Decatur, AL (the most moist bbq that you will ever eat and pies to die for)
Golden Rule in Hoover, AL (multiple locations but the one in Hoover is the best) (order vinegar slaw on you bbq sandwich and finish your meal with a fried pie)
Bobby Qs in Cookeville, TN (this is the one and only location: family owned and operated) (the beef brisket is as good as their bbq and their banana pudding is made with butterscotch pudding)
Full Moon in Birmingham, AL (the Southside location is the best) (chow chow on each sandwich and half moon chocalate chip cookies for dessert)
Smithfield’s in Wake Forest, NC (the only thing as good as their bbq is their fried chicken)

Fox Brothers on DeKalb Ave is hands down the best BBQ in Atlanta. It may be out of the way for some, but definitely worth the trip. Get the pulled pork or the sliced brisket. The BBQ sauce if the best.

My vote is for Atlanta Ribs in Smyrna. It’s not just great BBQ, they do great Chicken and sides as well; making it tough every time to chose my meal! This is not just another franchise BBQ joint, the owner is local and this is his only location. It is refreshing to see an individual taking a little pride in their work. Clean restrooms.

No one ever mentions how atmosphere adds to the taste. Even if the place doesn’t serve my favorite style of BBQ, the authenticity of the establishment can be reason enough for me to return on a regular basis just for the cool vibe. I’m thinking Fresh Air in Jackson and Aleck’s Barbecue Heaven in Atlanta. My God, if you don’t stare in awe at the ancient chopping block used at Aleck’s, you don’t have a soul. How about Melear’s in Fayetteville, where Kenny Melear sat there with a cigar clenched between his teeth, notarizing documents foe the locals, and selling BBQ. There is more to BBQ than the meat and the sauce. It is our heritage.

What an interesting poll. I was reading the bbqgeek.com and saw this. There are alot of great Q places listed here. It just goes to show the difference in flavor profiles for southern BBQ. The bottom line is what YOU like. I have a different attitude towards BBQ, I take it very serious and strive to put out true wood fired BBQ. I appreciate the couple of votes I have and would love to have more. I am not sure if this poll is just for Atlanta and surrounding, but I am about 65 miles north in Jasper. “I would like to extend this invitation if you want to come try my place out. If you come in and ask for me and say that you saw this posted here, I will buy you one small pork sandwich.” You can then decide if mine is worthy enough to be voted on.

The old man took me to ATLANTA RIBS Monday night. So fine I brought him there for lunch Tuesday to try some new goodies and everything was better than before. Going again tonight ‘cuz we both LOVE BarBQ and it doesn’t get better than this. Everything is fine, top notch, from Ribs, Brisket, Chicken, all the sides. Everything we try seems better than the last, but the ribs and pulled pork top the list. Atlanta Ribs on EW Connector can’t be beat.

Intown: Pig-n-Chik (perfect pork), and Harold’s (a landmark)
Burbs: Wallace in Austell, OB’s in McDonough
BTW: While they are delicious, Fat Matt’s ribs are not real bbq. The ribs are baked (not smoked) and are merely finished over a pit. They prepare their ribs almost the same way as TGI Fridays.

By far the best barbeque in Georgia is Dean’s Barbeque in Jonesboro. They’re served up the best since 1947, beginning in a small shack with only a window to hand you your order. Dean’s is still family owned, and you always get a smile when you come in. My family living on the north side often will say “bring some Dean’s!” when I drive up for a visit.

Atlanta Ribs is a relative newcomer but already has great BBQ and traditional sides.
I love the ribs at this place! It’s located off the East-West Connector and S. Cobb Dr intersection.
Their sauce is tomato based. I think it’s a little unfair to compair tomato based to vinegar based sauces, but then maybe I’m being too much of a BBQ purist.

Best North of the Perimeter: JD’s BBQ on Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock. Fantastic beef brisket. So good that you can eat it without sauce (a mark of excellent ‘que) but heavenly with their slightly peppered sauce.
Best Inside of the Perimeter: Daddy D’s wins this one by a hair. Harold’s is up there as well.
The problem with BBQ in ATL is that while there si lots of good/great ‘que to be had there is lots of not-so-good as well. Places like Williamson Bros (specifically the Canton location), Sonny’s (specifically the Morrow location), and any place that boils meat may please some folks but it’s usually mediocre (at best).
All that being said - the search for perfect BBQ is a fun one and I continue to yearn for that perfect place.

Hudson’s Hickory House has the best barbecue/ribs you will ever put in your mouth. Ribs are smokey with a light sauce that enhances the flavor. The barbecue so flavorful that you hardly need any sauce; but, of course, it is not barbecue without the mess of sauce. Relatives visiting from out of state always stop at Hudson’s for ribs before heading home. Located in historic downtown Douglasville, Hudson’s has been a local landmark for over 30 years best kept secret.

I’ve eaten a lot of barbecue in a lot of places. I am a fan of Eastern, NC “pulled pork”, Texas smoked brisket and “beef” ribs and St Louis and Memphis “ribs”. Each area as its own distinct style and flavor. Outside those areas you find places that will cook all three categories which is usually the case in the Atlanta Area. I’ve sampled most of the Atlanta area joints and I’ve found Sam and Dave’s BBQ 1 in Marietta to be the best quality and most consistent barbecue. Slow cooked, very little fat yet moist with great flavor.

Like I already said, Swallow is my favorite, but I decided to put it up against what is considered to be the best in Charlotte - Mac’s Bar and Grill on South Blvd. I ate there last night and I must say their portions are as large as Swallow’s, but I give Swallow an edge on the pork itself. Neither has as much shoulder as I’d like but still good and chopped coarse. Mac’s had better sides and also had live music — but don’t be put off by all the Harley’s in the parking lot — bikers have to eat too.

Big Shanty BBQ is awesome. Located in Kennesaw. I’m hooked on their sauce. Great Brisket and Chicken too. I think I’ll go tonight.

New to the area is The Big Shanty Smokehouse in Kennesaw. It’s a funky little joint, clean as a pin, with killer ribs, choice chicken, and bad ass brisket. The Brunswick Stew alone is worth the price of admission. It’s all prepared in their magical smoker out by the road and the sauce is served warm and tasty. The ATL area is short on “real deal” BBQ options, but the folks at Big Shanty get it and they’re worth the drive from where ever you are.

Big Shanty Smokehouse on Cherokee Street in Kennesaw has the best barbecue in Atlanta. I have eaten at all of the restaurant chains and many of the individual barbecue restaurants in the Atlanta metro area. None of them compares to Big Shanty Smokehouse. I have tried everything on their menu and it is all excellent. Being from Texas I am especially partial to the brisket which is the best I have eaten this side of Texas.

My husband got me hooked and now I Jones for the brisket every week, he’s a rib freak. Nice people, friendly service, fair prices. If you’re serious about Q, ya gotta give ‘em a try.

Big D’s in Alpharetta serves the best barbecue food we have found. The chicken has a mouth watering smokey flavor, the ribs are always moist and meaty and the pulled pork is top shelf. No trip is complete without fried green beans and even without any room we still feast on the dessert special of the day.

In my quest for good barbecue I was checking in the Carolina’s last week while on a business trip. I found some great stuff on I-85 in SC that compare’s favorably with Dusty’s one of my Atlanta favorites. Just off exit 92 near the big Peach in Gaffney is Daddy Joe’s. It also has ribs and chicken but I did not try any of those.

I have been there three times and have not been let down yet. One of their occasional specials is the Smoked Salmon Dip, which I live and die for. Their sandwiches come with some BBQ sauce on them, but they have a side of a slightly spicier sauce. I love the spicy sauce, but my wife has an ulcer, so having it on the side is an excellent idea. Highly recommended.

Tried Big Daddy’s in Tucker on my lunch break today, and…NOT IMPRESSED. Mediocre food, mediocre service.
My rule of thumb with BBQ is that if the establishment is not in a stand-alone building, the food will not be good (because there will not be a pit for true slow-cooked BBQ within). My rule continued to prove true today.

Sometimes you just have to ignore everything but the pig. Pig-N-Chik does pork right. They smoke their own stuff out back and it is mostly the dark meat from the shoulder. It is moist and tender. Cut a little course for me, but it just falls apart. It doesn’t matter which of their sauces you use, the meat is so good. The hush-puppies are real corn-meal not the doughnut holes served at some places that are only fit to eat with seafood. I still like to go to Swallow on Friday or Saturday night but drop in for a quickie here.

You can say want you want about the method of cooking BBQ but the proof is in how it tastes to each person. And after reading a few of the above posts I have noticed that taste is like opinions and certain nether orifices, everybody has one and they are not always pretty. I have lived in Atlanta 31 of my 32 years and ATLANTA RIB’S hands down is the Best BBQ in town. Located in the Smyrna/ Vinings area off Eastwest Connector, Atlanta Rib’s offers great portions for a great price. The pulled Pork (my fav) is hand pulled not shreaded, leaving the meat very tender. They also serve the meat without sauce so you can apply as much or as little of their normal or spicy sauce as you desire. For other friends or family that may not be in the mood for BBQ, Atlanta Ribs menu has a good variety of non-BBQ items. They even offer a very authentic Greek Salad which my wife loves. Try them out you will not be disppointed. ATLANTA RIB’S IS MY VOTE

OLD BRICK PIT on Peachtree Rd in Chamblee is the best I’ve ever had…Its in an old Dairy Queen location. The ribs literally fall off the bone and doesn’t need any sauce at all.

Inside ATL, it’s Fox Bros. After some growing pains opening their stand alone place on DeKalb, it’s been hog heaven since. And for you folks headed to Athens, it’s Jot-em-Down BBQ out in Whitehall. You can even get quail, depending on the day of the week.

We reside in North Carolina but travel to Atlanta frequently. After trying several BBQ places we found “Big D’s in Alpharetta to have a special taste that we can’t even find in the BBQ capitol of the world, NC. We highly recommend this establishment if you want to have great service and an awesome food experience.

Fincher’s BBQ in Macon, GA is out of this world and has literally been out of this world. It was sent up on one of the space missions as one of the meals for the astronauts. Being from GA and now living in VA I brought Fincher’s BBQ back from a trip home and now the folks in the office pester me about “going back to GA to get BBQ” another employee in the office brought us all some NC bbq and when she said she was going home and would bring us more BBQ everybody made excuses as to why they didn’t need any more. Fincher’s #1!

So, are you a manager here, or just an outside investor?

I hope the AJC can, and will, separate the shills from the objective opinions. Like most of us, I have not eaten at all of the mentioned places - but I have eaten at most of them. The above comments have added several to my “Short List” of places to check out. My vote goes to Sam & Daves BBQ 1 on Lower Roswell Road in Cobb County. There are several close seconds and several “aren’t worth mentioning”, but Sam & Daves’s does brisket exceptionally well and virtually everything else is done very well. Many places can handle meat, but not the sides. Sam & Dave’s does their own sides and they are worth the visit on their own.
