I have to throw in another vote for Synchronicity. They pick challenging scripts and produce great work. They also don’t do theatre for kids that talks down to them, but really entertains them while making them utilize their imagination.

Don’t count out the small Community Theaters! These smaller venues can put on some of the newest, edgiest shows as well as the family-friendly crowd pleasers. They also usually cost a LOT less to go to compared to professional houses. Community Theaters get a bad rap because people think those involved are just not as talented… which is patently untrue. They are simply actors, set designers, directors, etc that are just as good, but choose to do something else professionally. Check out ACT1 Theater in Alpharetta Kudzu or Rosewater in Roswell Old Alabama Road Company in Cumming Seven Stages in L5P Blackwell in Cobb and the list goes on and on…

Old Alabama Road Company puts on some great shows in Cumming, GA. Stuff that you don’t see played over and over all over the city.

North Fulton Drama Club is a great place in Roswell to catch Shakespeare under the stars.

ACT1 Theater has some wonderful family friendly options in Alpharetta.

Yeah, community theater gets people’s collective noses turned up at it but there are people doing great work outside of the pro/semipro houses in town. Centerstage North, as said above, have done well above par shows for everything I’ve seen, Old Alabama Road Co. does reliably good work. There are bunches of others, right outside your door.

GTA (Gainesville Theatre Alliance). IMO, the closest to touring Broadway show spectacle/acting/directing you can get in Atlanta area and at a very worthwhile price. The sets alone will make you want a cigarette afterward.

Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn has been operating steadily for the last 35 years. This group of unpaid volunteers runs the business as well as the creative aspect of the guild, and puts on five shows a year. This group works hard, plays hard, and has fun - and it shows in their productions.

On Stage Atlanta.

They do comedy and drama, they have a good variety every season. Urinetown was great and so was a A Lesson Before Dying. All in the timing was a great bunch of sketch comedy.

Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn is the best! One of, if not the, oldest continually operating community theatre in the Metro area. 35 years and going strong. It is an amazing facility without a bad seat in the house, does five shows a year, and is and has always been, an all vounteer organization! True community theatre—by the community and for the community. Great shows and great people!

Southside Theatre Guild (STG) is one of the best theatrical organizations around. I’ve worked with them and numerous others around town and I heartily agree with all of the other posters regarding STG . If you haven’t been, you really should. It’s well worth it. You can’t beat a community organization that is run so well, essentially, by the community it serves.

I’d put the Gainesville Theatre Alliance up against any group anywhere. The productions are always amazing, from the set design to the acting…you are guaranteed to leave with a wonderful and lasting experience. I have seen the faces of children light up with joy after watching a production of Snow Dragon and I have seen grown men cry during a brutal beating in Ragtime. To put it simply, the Gainesville Theatre Alliance is one of the best, if not the best, groups around.

The Horizon Theatre in downtown Atlanta is the best! Not only does Tom Key do a terrific job with the selection of plays, the talent is great and the theatre itself is the most comfortable around.

I really like the smaller spaces in Atlanta (read not Alliance) and this is my favorite.

My vote goes to Horizon Theatre in Little 5 Points. Its shows are entertaining and always have a positive message. Some shows are fun fluff and some are thought-provoking dramas with a global perspective. I love seeing favorite actors return time and again, showing their talents in a variety of roles. Best of all, it’s an intimate setting and not a bad seat in the house.

By far, Horizon Theatre Company gets my vote. Where else in Atlanta can you go, where NO seat is a bad seat, and get the best of the best! Horizon presents contemporary pieces that leave you feeling differently about the world when you leave…now isn’t that what theatre is about! And my God, who can forget the GREAT cookies and the FREE parking an enraptured with the Southern charm of the staff…EVERYTIME I’m in town, Horizon is a TO DO!!!!

The Legion Theater in Cartersville is great for those folks who DONT live near the perimeter. And I think the Theater on Main in Acworth as improved a lot. They have thier issues, sure, but still put on good performances. Avoid the Blackwater in Cobb. Horrible management.

There is one Community Theatre that no one has mentioned yet and I think it deserves some praise The crowds grow with each performance and the City of Duluth should get several Ata Boys for the job they did in converting an old church into a very nice theatre, I am talking about THE RED CLAY in downtown Duluth, if you haven’t been there yet, I suggest you check it out, great shows always, especially when New Dawn is putting them on.

The horizon theater. It has been around for 25 years and consitently has excellent performances by wonderful actors.It also tries to have at least one play per year dealing with major world problems such as Darfur,the effectsof the war in Iraq on Iraqi women etc. I reccomend it highly.

Who was the first theatre in Atlanta to produce CHESS?!! ONSTAGE ATLANTA, and quite well I might add. With productions like E/R, Amadeus, Secret Garden, Man of La Mancha, Second Samuel, Ruthless!, BASH, Urinetown, just to name several of many great nights of theatre I have experienced at Onstage. Every group hits a bump in the road, but looks like ONSTAGE Atlanta is back on the right track. I am looking forward to this season!

For those who are north of town, check our Fifth Row Center in Flowery Branch. They have done “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” , “Shakespeare!”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood”. All in their first year.

The Holly Theater in Dahlonega’s production of “Big River ” was fantactic.

ONSTAGE ATLANTA A few years back Onstage did a series of musicals in concert that were terrific! Most small theatres never get a chance to produce the really big musicals due to space and large cast sizes. By doing the musicals in a concert format they could use color blind casting, not to mention casting for vocal ability instead of for ‘appearance’. I heard some great singers who probably would never get cast in a full production due to size or height. Titanic, Ragtime, Jekyl and Hyde to name a few. Each concert production was terrific and I usually saw each one twice (3 times for Ragtime!) BRING BACK THE MUCICALS IN CONCERT! Onstage really knows how to do a musical right!

Georgia Ensemble and Stage Door are among examples of theatre consistently well done. The devil is in the detail — the endless detail in every facet of a show, from director to actors to lighting, costume and set designer to stage crew and on and on. People in community theatre love what they do and it shows bigtime.

For quality, enjoy a show at the many theater choices Atlanta has to offer. Like, Ansley Park Playhouse, ONSTAGE Atlanta, Whole World Theatre, Horizon Theatre, and The Fox Theatre. The shows staged in the ‘burbs are second rate at best.

For example: The performances at the Southside Theater Guild are well below average. It is quite evident that they are “just having fun.” Nothing, especially the acting, singing and dancing are ever taken seriously.

The theater itself, while quaint, is uncomfortable. If only they spent as much on the interior as they did on the marquee.

Onstage Atlanta produced the absolute best version of Grease ever, and I have seen about 10 versions both here and in NY. That was at the old Courtland space. The new building is nice, great legroom, and does not leak ;-), but not as charming as the old space.

Having attended Horizon for many years, I continue to be impressed with the choice of plays and the quality of the productions. Although I like some much better than others, they certainly push us to think and feel. Also, they are often much fun. For several years we have been inviting folks from an extended email list to join us for a theater evening. From 12 to 37 have joined us enthusiastically, many seeing theater for the first time in Atlanta. Most of them leave impressed and interested in other Horizon evenings. Much of the strongly positive response to the Horizon is earned by the long-time dedication of the Adlers. Atlanta can be very proud and appreciative that they have been contributing in this way for over 20 years.

I love the Horizon Theatre Company!!! I have been a subscriber for years and I love their selection of plays. The set designs are so creative and the space is cozy and easily interactive when appropriate.

For the best in classic musical theatre, the Atlanta Lyric Theatre cannot be beat. Their production of Peter Pan this past season was mesmerizing! Now that they have a permanent home at the Strand in Marietta, you can look foward to being dazzled season after season. Absolutely tops!

The Horizon Theatre has the best entertainment in the Atlanta area. Most of the plays are cutting edge and are thought provoking.

However, Altar Boyz this year and the November/December produced Santaland Diaries are fabulously fun!!! If you haven’t seen Santaland Diaries you are missing one of the best plays produced in the Atlanta area.

My vote is for the Horizon Theatre. I have been a subscriber for 16 years! The plays are great, the environment is wonderful (I remember the original rickety chairs and old restrooms!), and the quality of acting and directing is top notch! So, leave the suburbs, folks, and come to Little Five Points and enjoy some fabulous theater!

Best “lil theatre in town, “the Horizon.” Great price for mukti-ethnic drama, gender issues. Like the teaching and mentoring for new artists—students, younger folks and mature folks like moi!! :)

I have gathered senior groups over the past 3-4 years to experience the Horizon Theatre. They now bring their adult children. :)

What do I know? Only been a NY Broadway theatre kid from age 9. First theatre - musical—“Jamaica” - Belafonte, Lena Horne. Mz. Vonnie :) :)

You have to check out HOrizon Theatre, for the best local theatre in Atlanta. I’ve been a subscriber since 1992, and live up in CUMMING! If we make the journey inside the perimeter to see these shows, there must be something to them! Jeff and LIsa’s choice of plays are always contemporary and entertaining, and the directing and acting top-notch.

My vote is for the Horizon Theatre in Atlanta. It’s not just the quality of their plays and actors, but their service. We had left our tickes at home, and when we got there, there were no questions asked. We were led into the theatre where we enjoyed a great performance. There are some things that you can’t place a value on - and that service was just one of them.

The Horizon Theatre does an amazing job of finding interesting, never before produced in Atlanta plays—some even written especially for the theatre. This is done within a small space, a very limited budget and a season of five plays for as little as $65 for the season subscriber. The set design is incredible—even more admirable because of the ingenuity of how to utilize this limited playing area. The theatre makes the audience feels like we’re in a different place for each play.

As a former New Yorker and an admitted “New York theatre snob,” I must say I am amazed at the “theatre fix” given to me by The Horizon. The best compliment I can give is that I would be a season subscriber even if it were in New York, at a much higher price point.

The incredibly fine work at The Horizon deserves the support of every Atlantan who appreciates outstanding theatre.

If you are looking for ‘the best’, there is one on the South Side by the name of Legacy Theater — down I-85 and Route 74 to Tyrone, Georgia. It is worth the trip. Great line up for the season. Best bet is to obtain season tickets!!

Some of the best theatre I have seen has been at Horizon Theatre. They feature topics of interest from the world to interior landscapes. The plays are always thought provoking, sometimes gut wrenching, sometimes funny. Their actors are superb and always believable. I am thrilled to be a season ticket holder, and have never been disappointed with anything I have attended.

The Legacy Theatre in Tyrone, just 15 monutes south of the airport, is a terrific place to see professional theatre. There are no parking hassles (parking is free!), there are some excellent restaurants nearby (within easy walking distance),no one chases you down the sidewalk asking for a handout, and all the seats provide great views. What a deal!

Horizon Theatre has been apart of my life for 20 years. It has provided me with opportunities to practice my craft including internship opportunities as a college student, and job opportunities as prop mistress and dramaturg. I look forward to the Horizon Theatre season announcement each year because co-founder Jeff and Lisa Adler have always embraced diversity and continue to tackled tough issues. They are the Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis of theatre management and production. Live theatre in Atlanta is richer because of their unfailing dedication to the perpetuation of arts excellence in our city. While I understand people get excited about their local community theatre, we’re talking the BEST place to see live performance in the city. I’ve been a part of a group that has seen over 150 plays in the last two years, all over town. From that perspective, the BEST, goes to the following:

Alliance Hertz Stage, Georgia Shakespeare (at Oglethorpe) and Theatrical Outfit. All three can be counted on to do some of the best most innovative theatre in the city.

ONSTAGE ATLANTA pulls of miracles year after year [now 37 years running]: the theater demonstrates that excellence can be achieved without corporate sponsorship although at extremely difficult costs in personal investment: a level of volunteerism and dedication of actors and management beyond what ought to be required “to put on a play.” Some heroic efforts have resulted in truly fine theater. Over the years I’ve enjoyed some of the best acting at Onstage Atlanta [Man in a Glass Booth, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolffe, Angels in America, Breaking the Code] and wonderful musicals, some “in concert” [Jekyll and Hyde, Urinetown, Ragtime] and repeatedly I wonder how they pull it off, when they remain too busy putting out daily fires, or too tired, to chase down corporate funding. Onstage Atlanta remains the best kept secret in Atlanta, and although audiences may sometimes be small [and thus not primed to pad this survey], readers should test out the quality of the theater spontaneously—- drop in on the current prouction [Weir] and you won’t be disappointed.

Southside Threatre Guild One of the best shows in town. I have been going there for years and as I go to different shows around town I always come back to STG. I great venue with wonderfull people. Best community theatre I have ever seen! Puts some “prefessional” theaters to shame.
