Fred’d Bar-B-Que House on Thornton Rd. Lithia Springs serves the best hot dogs around, and I include the Varsity in this statement. Their dogs are called “Yellow Jacket’s’ and are cooked the same way as the Old Yellow Jacket next to Georgia Tech used to cook them. “Boiled wennie in a toasted bun, with chilli, mustard, ketsup, and chopped onions.

I love Chicago dogs - love the snap of the casing, love the toppings, they are just perfect. That being said, this is Atlanta, so the best hot dog here is the chili dog at the Varsity. Preferably several, with diced onions on the side, sitting in a too small school room chair, watching a football game.

I would have to say Chicago Dog or the Varsity. It’s a toss up. If I am looking for grease (the onion rings are the greasiest) and need to get something heavy on my stomach from a night of partying I would choose Varsity. But for a really tasty hot dog, with so many toppings to choose from, Chicago Dog for sure!

Mike’s in Sandy Springs on Roswell is my favorite. They also use Vienna dogs. I’ve been here 10 years still don’t see the infacutation with the Varsity. Reminds me of terrible school cafeteria food in my younger days. I also like the Costco deal, can’t beat the $1.60 dog and coke.

Jack’s dogs are the best! He is a Chicago native and he’s brought the Chicago hot dog “thing” to Marietta. The Vienna weiners have just the right snap, nestled in a poppy seed bun with homemade relish are just the best. And Jack is pretty nice, too!

For value, you can’t beat the $1.50 special at Costco. Interestingly, they have been the same price for 25 years, and the dogs have actually gotten bigger in size, as have the drinks. (Used to be a 12 oz can of soda; now its a 20oz cup with free refills.)

For taste though, my vote goes to Barkers on Windy Hill. Best dog around, bar none…

Barkers. Only edible dog in Atlanta. It’s the product — Sahlen’s hot dogs from Buffalo, New York, made from choice cuts of prime beef and pork, natural casisings, smoked instead of cured in a chem-bath. Those things they serve at the varsity are down right scary.

This is driving me nuts. I moved out of ATL several years ago and do not miss the traffic and congestion, but I definitely miss the Varsity. They may not be the best connoisseurwise (how can I even use that word talking about hot dogs), but they are different, and if you were weened on them, they’re kind of addictive. Barker’s are great. You clowns touting QuikTrip need to get a life, or some taste buds.

Varsity is so extemely greasy I can’t eat it.

Brandi’s hot dogs are good, but only if you load them up. The dog itself just isn’t that great, but the chili is okay.

Now if your really want a good dog with the best homemade chili, the best fries in cartersville and some amazing hot sauce that i’ve practically drank it’s so good check out Franks off of Grassdale in Cartersville.
