What is the best farmers’ market in and around Atlanta?

We have our winners, and it was just as we suspected.

Everyone loves the DeKalb Farmer’s Market (yes, it’s officially Your DeKalb Farmer’s Market, but no calls it that). It was the winner by a wide margin. Despite some arguments about what constitutes a farmers’ market, we left the definitions up to you. Even the skeptics seem to love the selection, prices and freshness of the offerings at the mega-market. Check out the full list of your picks for the best farmers’ market in and around Atlanta.

As many of our readers commented, the DeKalb Farmers’ Market isn’t a farmers’ market in the traditional sense, where individual growers come to sell their homegrown goods directly to the consumer. That’s where our own Meridith Ford Goldman went looking for our picks. Her top spot went to the small Morningside Farmers’ Market, where you can pick up some of the freshest tomatoes, arugula and more direct from the folks who grew them. See the complete list of our picks for the top farmers’ markets in the Atlanta area.

No way. The State Farmer’s Market in Forest Park. I mean where else can you get fresh produce, listen to bluegrass, and buy a gun every fourth weekend. Part grocer, part festival of the mundane. And if you got your first driver’s license here, you have to vote for it.

The best farmers market in Atlanta is Cobb International. Dekalb is larger than Cobb, but Dekalb is far too overpriced. If you are looking to get the most out of your budget, then visit Cobb. The Atlanta Farmers Market is the second best.

Dekalb Farmer’s Market. No question about it. One of the best things about Dekalb County. Any else try the new cupcakes? OMG amazing!! I won’t begin to comment on the fruit and for all of you budget watching people like me the spice prices are unmatched.

I was startled at how old and tired the produce at Dekalb looked the last few times I’ve gone. Apparently it depends what do you go. They do have the best cafeteria in the city though.

I have to agree that Buford Hway trumps them in terms of the freshness of the produce even if it’s not all organic. They may not have the fanciest meat either but in terms of variety, it’s scary now much stuff they have and what parts they’ll sell you.

DeKalb Farmer’s Market. I’ve tried other places, but for the prices of organic produce, it can’t be beat. I have my favorite products that I can’t get there anywhere else. Plus, everything I make with their ingredients tastes so much fresher!

I love Dekalb Farmer’s Market.

I like to go in on a Saturday Morning and buy a bushel of Oysters for a mere $20, and some nice cuts of meat for my smoker. I will grab a cup of coffee to drink while I shop. Head over to the extensive beer and wine selection and get what I need. Then meet back up with the wife who will have purchased all of the food we need for the week.

Then, its all day by the fire pit, shucking oysters, drinking beer, and smoking meat!

Ah Saturdays!

Dekalb Farmers Market is not a farmers market; it’s just a speciality grocery store like Whole Foods that happens to have farmers market in the name.

The real farmers markets are in the Decatur courthouse square, across from Alon’s Bakery, at Pidemont Park and in the parking lot of St. Phillip’s Cathedral. If you are not buying the food from the farmer who grew it, you’re not at a farmers market.

Dekalb Farmers Market! I have tried Whole Foods and Earth Fare, neither of which is a true farmers market. And neither comes close to DFM.

Meme - No, I don’t believe there is a farmers market in Gwinnett. I live in Grayson and drive to Decatur every-other Friday to buy a two-week supply of produce (it requires planning—soft fruits for Week 1 and apples/citrus for Week 2). There are a couple Asian grocers in Duluth that have foods not available at traditional stores. There also is a Whole Foods just over the county line, in Johns Creek. But for me, it’s faster to get to Decatur.

Yup I grew up on Dekalb Farmer’s Market and Foodie, it is a real farmer’s market. They just get the produce from different farmers all over but it’s still fresh from the farm.

I’m with Foodie. I shop at DFM, but it’s not a real farmer’s market. Most of the produce is shipped in from far away. If you want fresh food and to support local agriculture, try visiting the farmer’s markets Foodie mentions.

It’s hard for me to get past the smell at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market. It seems to get into everything and now that they have a no returns policy, I don’t feel like I can take the risk of shopping there. Had to throw out 3 bags of sealed rice cakes because they smelled just like the store. Maybe would go back for spices and fresh produce that I can get a good look at before buying. And no, it’s not a real farmer’s market — you aren’t buying it direct from the farmer.

Meme there is a whole foods off pleasant hill road near state bridge. Both whole foods and farmers market carry the same items. Some would say that the prices vary depending upon the location but I haven’t found that to be the case.

By far the Dekalb Farmers’ Market. When a recipe requires those “never heard of before” ingredients, nine out of ten times it can be found at DFM. I love spending time there. Sometimes I don’t even need to buy anything, but I just like walking around looking at the vast selection.

There’s a great little farmer’s market in Suwanee’s Town Center from May through early October - with honest-to-gosh farmers selling veggies, eggs, meat, baked goods, jams & honey. Saturday’s 8am to noon (but come early!). Then you can go over to PJ’s for coffee, go to a wine tasting at v. boggs galleries, or splash around in the fountain.

dekalb is not a specialty store like whole foods. there prices run circles around whole foods super expensive fare. yet dekalb is MORE than a farmers market. offering gourmet goodies for that “discriminating foodie”. that’s why almost everyone here is voting dekalb as best in the ATL.

Dekalb Farmer’s Market is not a “farmer’s market”, it is a mega grocery store. A farmer’s market is a place where local farmers bring in what they grow and sell. While DFM is unique and worth a visit, it is a store and you will not find much local grown items there. If they sell meat, can goods and seafood, it is not a farmers market.

By Angus

March 19, 2009 11:00 AM | Link to this

I’m sorry but not only is DFM crowded and full of people that have no idea what planet they’re on (and continuously ram their cart into you), the smell of that place gets into everything they sell. I don’t think it’s as big or as value-friendly as Harry’s used to be up in Roswell.

The next time I want to fight my way through narrow aisles of overpriced non-sense, shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of Ethiopians and their obnoxious children, I’ll hit up DFM.

I shop at the Lilburn Int’l Farmers Market at the intersection of Hwy. 29 (Lawrenceville Hwy.) and Indian Trail. The meat prices are good and the fruits and vegetables are fresh. The only thing that bothers me is the fishy smell when you first walk in, but you get used to it. Give it a try!

The farmers market in Piedmont Park during the summer. I am not sure of it’s official name but it is the best around town and it is a real farmers market.

I have been going to the farmer market over 20 Years. I has organic produce at a good price. The farmer market on North highland saturday between 7:30 -11:30 am is also good. Sevenah the coop is also good. forest park is also very good. Each one has it benefits. I think the Dekalb farmer market has the most to offer. I think that the internationl flavor of people is also a treasure. All of the above have a more natural setting then any grocery store.. I know of and have more natural rather then Food that has been tamper with or altered by man. After all altered food leads to a altered consumer of such.
