Having played the old historic courses of the city (Druid Hills GC, East Lake, Capital City, Ansley GC, and Peachtree GC) many times, I do not have the perspective of many others. I also played Settindown Creek years ago and have played White Columns and Bears Best. But I haven’t played Hawks Ridge, Sugarloaf, or other newer additions to the private club roster. Still, here are my choices:

Private 1. East Lake (excellent par 3s) 2. Peachtree (a close second- most approach shots are more difficult than the shots at East Lake) 3. Ansley/Settindown Creek (great track)

Public 1. Bear’s Best (variety of holes and condition of course) 2. Cobblestone (great value and shot selection) 3. Heritage GC in Tucker (though they might be going private- not sure)

You left off the best value in the area…Dogwood Country Club in Austell, just off the East-West Connector in Cobb County and bordering the Silver Comet Trail. It plays much longer than the yardage seems to indicate and is a great shotmaker’s layout. Its in a parklike setting, with beautiful old trees, creeks and wild things, including a few favorite hawks that have adopted the course. You can walk or ride and its very family friendly and player friendly. Great mixture of young people, seniors and couples who play golf for skill, exercise or just plain fun. Its semiprivate but there’s not a better membership value in the metro area.

I’d like to apologize at my ignorant attempt at humor, honestly I’m a white male and used the name Leroy because my Mother and Father didn’t raise me right! I know that Leroy is a stereotypical name in the African-American community! Deep down I’m sad with my life and I’m trying very hard to be a man, I’m a closeted homosexual and I’m afraid to “come out” and be the person I truly am!

I like how the second Leroy who was obviously offended by the first Leroy’s racial overtones basically bashed homosexuals. Good stuff.

I agree with Toepro…Durham Lakes is a gem for a public track, its pretty tough from the back tees, that course has eaten my lunch a time or two.

Trophy Club of Atlanta (in Alpharetta) has some of the fastest greens I’ve seen on a public course, brutal Bermuda on a hot dry day!

I only play the finest clubs in town and then have my after round meals at Bones or Chops. Occassionally I will throw down at Dantanna’s or Stats with my boys. I have John Rocker carry my clubs and shine my shoes after I finish a round. Last time he left some dirt in the grooves of my sand wedge. I didnt’ notice buy baby Sophie did. A little dissapointed with Rocker.

Private: Peachtree, Hawk’s Ridge, East Lake, AAC Highlands

Public: Chestatee, Cherokee Run, Bear’s Best

Most Likely to use 5 iron on mugger: Brown’s Mill

Best Candidate for bulldozing and redesign (+ range): North Fulton

Best kept secrets but long drives: -Field Ferry ($$ Calhoun) -Barnesley Gardens ( $$$$ Adairsville) -Hard Labor Creek ($ half way to Augusta)

By Jo Bling

March 29, 2009 11:19 AM | Link to this

Private: 1. Peachtree – This just isn’t even open for debate. 2. Hawk’s Ridge – Not really in Atlanta, but just an unbelievable course. You can practice your putting on the tee boxes while you wait to tee off. 3. East Lake – Not the nicest course, but the tradition is overwhelming.

Public: 1. Cobblestone – Best deal, and layout, going. 2. There is no No. 2. The rest of Atlanta’s public courses are uninspired designs, an hour drive minimum, or will take you six hours to play.

I think the best course with all things considered (track, maintenence, value, staff, clubhouse) is Crystal Lake in Henry County. The best overall experience without concern for the $$ was Sugarloaf. Another hidden gem is Summergrove in Newnan.

No contest Peachtree GC is the best, and I have only played it twice. Only one other layout in Georgia with the Jones name on it, and that is in Augusta. Too hard to get on.

Capital City Crabapple, Settindown, AAC Highlands, ACC in Marietta are all up there right behind. Keep an eye on the new layout at Capital City Brookhaven, that course looks like it will be up there as well when finished (replacing the original layout). Hornorable mention to The Standard Club for having some of the toughest green complexes in the area as well.

BTW- No offense, but anyone who thinks Sugarloaf should be up there is misinformed.

…and for the public access, can’t believe nobody has mentioned Stonemont at Stone Mountain (the lake course is not even close). Only RTJ Sr couse left around after they took down the Metropolitan. Classic Pine Tree lined course with very tricky breaks on flat looking greens. Another good place to look to use your 5 Iron on a mugger is Mystery Valley. Too bad, because it was once a great little public track. We played all our HS matches out there back in the 80’s.
