Where can you get the best sweet tea in and around Atlanta?
We have our winners.
It seems our readers are big on tradition, especially when it comes to sweet tea. One of our city’s most venerable establishments takes the crown when it comes to the South’s favorite house wine. Mary Mac’s Tea Room, which opened back in 1945, is your winner. Check out all of the contenders you nominated for best sweet tea in and around Atlanta.
Our pick for the top hasn’t been around as long, but it still has a fine reputation for good food and drink. South City Kitchen’s iced tea leads our list, getting a little boost from the specialty drinks the restaurant concocts with that special brew. See our top five picks for the Atlanta area’s best sweet tea.

As good as many local spots are (and I am very much a localist)I’ll have to say McDonalds, if for no other reason than I can always find good sweet tea when traveling. Try finding sweet iced tea in southern Florida or NYC. Before Micky D’s dollar tea it was almost an imposibility.

Reading these responses is painful…McDonald’s? Applebee’s? I guess this is the same phenomenon that gets Papa John’s and Pizza Hut voted best Pizza in Atlanta year after year.
If you want good sweet tea go to either Dreamland BBQ in Roswell or Taqueria Del Sol in Midtown/Decatur…they are just two spots who have good tea. There are countless others if you just bother to follow the road less traveled.

Dear Rory -
Apparently you are from the north, as you completely missed the point of my comment. In the south’s past, tea was considered neither “sweet” nor “unsweet”. It was simply “tea”, even though it contained sugar. I was not blaming northerners for any problems, simply pointing out that they first made a fuss about differentiating between what we drank and what they drank. And I really don’t think it’s a big enough deal to be calling someone names. I guess you never learned to express yourself in a civil manner. That’s ok, I forgive you.

JJ — Sweet tea is the official beverage of heaven — so don’t go there (LOL)!!!
McDonald’s sweet tea is too iffy so they definitely don’t make the list.
Chick-fil-A’s tea is GOOD.
Publix — please that is just NOT SOUTHERN STYLE tea.
I would add Red Lobster and Ol’Charley’s to the list.
But for all restaurants that are offering sweet tea on your menu; please find ONE PERSON who makes it really well and assign them that task. Sweet tea is not something you play around with and let any Johnny-Come-Lately grab the tea bags, water, sugar and stir up. Consistency people, consistency — the tea has to be right or the whole meal is just ruined.

If we’re going by restaurants, then there are a few:
The Colonnade (LOVE their sweet tea and grilled trout)
Merimack’s Tea Room
If we’re going by other criteria, then my Nana’s house. When my Nana and Papa were alive, my Nana made the best sweet tea in the world. Every family reunion we always looked for the sweet tea jugs on the table because we KNEW who made it.
Now it’s either me or whoever gets to the grocery store first :P Usually if I get the change and the time I’ll make it, but otherwise it’s whoever stops by the grocery store and gets the Kroger brands :\ I miss Nana’s tea!
(I currently live in Fort Worth Texas and I can’t TELL you how much reading these “Best Of“‘s makes me want to move back home and just live at the southern Soul Food restaurants :( )

McAlister’s Deli’s - there are several in Atlanta - make great tea.
Oddly enough, Marlowe’s Tavern also has a great glass of tea.
Swallow at the Hollow in Roswell is good.
And as much as I hate to say it, McDonalds really has started to make consistently good tea and are pricing it right. Chick-fil-a used to be my favorite but lately it has an off, splenda/fake sweet taste and is usually too sweet.

I always thought Chick-fil-A’s was the best until McDonald’s started their $1 tea. I was surprised how good it was!! Chick-fil-A’s has gotten too corn-syrupy tasting.
I avoid mixing the sweet with the unsweet because the restaurants don’t seem to think that the unsweet can go bad, but it can.

My iced tea is the best in the world. Using enough tea bags is the secret. I use 3 family sized Lipton Tea bags to steep in a half gallon of hot water, then sweetened with a cup of sugar and a half gallon of cold water—stir slowly and pour over crushed ice and serve with fresh lemon slices. Wonderful!! Yankees can not make iced tea—it’s a southern thang, y’all.

By Southern Bella
April 10, 2009 12:51 PM | Link to this
There are a couple of places that I haven’t seen nominated: The Blue Willow Inn, and Dusty’s BBQ.
I also have a couple of comments about 2 places:
Publix: Have you guys read the “ingredients” list? Do you realize that Publix adds coloring to what they call “tea”? If you have to add coloring to tea, then, you are drinking colored sugar water.
McDonald’s: I’m guilty of buying their tea sometimes. I knew that something about it was suspicious, but it’s been the most consistent in the “mass-produced, cheap” category.
I left a cup out for a few days and wanted to check the “surprise” inside. While I expected mold, I was surprised to instead see a huge gelatinous mass. I concluded that they use corn syrup— which is a BILLION times sweeter than regular sugar!
Especially, if you are at risk for diabetes or heavy weight gain, McDonald’s tea is not for you!

The Beacon Drive In in Spartanburg. For people who believe the house wine of the South should be sweetened, this is hands-down the best.
I actually prefer my tea unsweetened these days though with lots of lemon. Anyone know a place with just really good tea?

The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle and the OK Cafe on 75 and W Paces. Maggiano’s and Seasons 52 use simple syrup with their freshly brewed tea.

McDonald’s is wayy too sweet. Seems like they add a pound of sugar in each cup. And I bet they do.
