Who makes the best burgers in and around Atlanta?

We have our winners.

You picked an offbeat Atlanta eatery with a reputation for serving burgers with a twist. The Vortex, with locations in Midtown and Little Five Points, topped the list of your picks for the best burgers in and around Atlanta.

Topping our list is a relative newcomer that has made a big impression on Atlanta diners with burgers that are smaller in size but big on flavor. The burger goes uptown at Flip, the latest project from former “Top Chef” contestant Richard Blais. Check out our picks for the top five places to grab a burger in and around Atlanta.

Either Ann (of Ann’s Snack Bar Fame) or the folks at the Holeman & Finch Public House, who only make 25 burgers per night at 10:00PM…it’s not on the menu, but it’s excellent…

I heard they make them for sunday brunch too but I’ve never been for brunch…

The “burger” at Fox Brothers BBQ is excellent. While it might not be a traditional ground beef patty, it is beef in a bun. Sliced smoked brisket with pimento cheese and some veggies, mmm mmm.

The Grove (Oak Grove Rd. and Lavista) and the Blue Ribon Grill (Lavista and Henderson Mill) are neighborhood eateries with great burgers. Six Feet Under’s cheese burgers are great too. I guess they are neighborhood eateries, just not my neighborhood.

Dear Freako, The Vortex always allowed smoking, until the pc police stepped in with that non-smoking ordinance. The owners then got smart and sidestepped the issue by setting an age limit - it is a bar, after all. If anyone fits into the category of jacka$$, I think it’s you. And surprise…I don’t smoke.

I had a burger at Bobby’s in Marietta, and it was one of the best i’ve had in a long time. They had a side bar so you can pick your own toppings. I was very impressed. Your right about the Vortex who wants to smell someones stinky smoke when they are trying to enjoy their meal. Five guys has opened a new location on Camp Creek their burgers are great too. Both places leave you satisfied.

@Sam. If you hate the South so much, Delta is ready when you are.

Yes, Fatburger has a good burger, but their locations here leave a lot to be desired. The employees at the stores out west are miles better than the ones here. Now only if Jack In The Box would open some stores that aren’t a two hour drive away….

There’s not a particularly good burger in Atlanta - but if you ever find yourself in Athens you must have a Pepper Supreme burger, with fries and side of feta cheese dressing. As Jimmy would sing “Heaven on Earth…”

By Jeff

Sorry - thinking about the Pepper Supreme burger got me a little happy !

Anyways, go to Athens, stop at The Grill right off Broad, across from the Arches and order what I told you - and don’t forget the fries and feta cheese dressing on the side !!

Yum !!!!

Hey Horsetoothedjackass… I already have my ticket back to LA next week. Thank you very much. The discussion is not about how much better the west coast Fatburgers are compared to here. That is a given. What does “The employees at the stores out west are miles better than the one here”. What does that have to do with what is the best burger in Atlanta? Even the Fatburger here is still better than any burger in this country ass town.

Rhea’s in Roswell: Also very good for a no frills burger. And that IS what it’s about….the BURGER. The Vortex: Also a consistently great burger. Why all for love for a nasty, greasy, fall apart, over priced 5 Guys burger. The meat has little flavor and the fries are as greasy as the burger that the bag soaks it up and falls apart. Seriously, how can a burger so greasy that the bun falls apart and you need a fork to eat it be so highly touted. Rhea’s has a great burger with the Texas toast. Brickhouse in Decatur is very good as well. I don’t know what to call the “best”, but 5 guys is not in the top 10, much less top 5. If you want a heart attack burger, just get the Baconator from Wendy’s instead for half the price for a meal.

Chili’s Big Mouth Burger, I love the Triple the Cheese Bacon Big Mouth. I have them blacken it with peppercorn seasoning and then throw some onion straws on it. MMM-MMM!

The Vortex is good but way over rated and, aside from the wierd toppings, nothing special. I eat their probably twice a month because it’s walking distance from my office.

Went to Ann’s Snack Bar one day. I waited for over three hours and was amazed at how many f’ing idiots think that her burger is the “world’s best burger.” It is made with inferior ingredients and her technique is sloppy with lots of Lowry’s Seasoning Salt. Not to mention, she’s a grumpy old bich that treats her customers like poop. Deep fried bacon, cheap ground beef pulled from a vacuum packed plastic tube, cheep cheese, cheap bread, & a nasty kitchen (or should I just say trailer).

Ann’s burger was OKAY from a taste standpoint. However, it’s obvious that people go there for the entertainment and, regardless of their claims, not the food.

Tell me I did NOT read someone bragging about a burger fried in peanut oil? A burger should be grilled or if it’s fried just slapped in a pan, it provides it’s own oil.

I see a lot of votes for 5 guys. If I win the lottery and decide to spend 100 bucks for a burger and an order of fries, I may just try them. But for what they charge I expect some sexual gratification…….

The Vortex burgers MUST be good if they overcome the taste of the cig smoke, or maybe smokers just have no taste.

Joe’s to Go on Killian Hill and 78 gets my vote.

I’m pleased to see so many people mentioning Carey’s! That was my dad’s all-time favorite; he still goes on about it.

The Vortex would be the best, by leagues, if they would only ban smoking. You can get a perfect one around 3 or 4 pm on a weekday, when there aren’t many people in the place. Then, and only then, they’re better than Ann’s.

Third is a place nobody’s mentioned yet: Bob-O’s in Woodstock. Get their Cajun (beef ground w/andouille sausage) with a side of their amazing chili. Mmmmm!

And yes, Fuddruckers has let their quality slip BADLY.

“The Counter” in Roswell Georgia is by far the best hamburger I’ve ever had. My favorite is the Old School, but they can build a burger with just about anything you want on it. You have to give this place a try, all I can say is “Wow”…

THE COUNTER in Roswell. I was intrigued by the concept. There is a place similar that I frequent in Tampa. While visiting friends we decided to check it out and loved it. Not your run of the mill burger joint. Try the Taco Turkey burger.

THE COUNTER ! We live in Peachtree City and had friends tell us they drove all the way Roswell and LOVED the food. We drove the 68 miles and WOW! That is, by far, the best hamburger I have ever eaten…my whole family is so wowed by the place that we still drive to enjoy. I don’t know if it’s the quality of the food they use, the way they cook or what, but it’s great. Add in the customer service, and I can’t imagine a better burger, better atmosphere, better price for what I’m giving my family. My wife loves it and our 2 teenage sons. She is from Puerto Rico and we have even taken her family (when they have come to visit) to The Counter….and they all loved the food! …..so, does that make The Counter, “international?” You want the best burger, it’s the Counter !

The vortex burger is average at best, and the attitude they serve just makes it worse. They pride themselves on turning down the most reasonable requests, like cutting the burger in half in the kitchen with a sharp butcher’s knife, rather than expecting me to do it with a dull butter knife at the table and having the burger turn into a soggy inedible mess. I am so tired of the b****** attitude that these poser donorcyclist wanna be’s dish out, I’ve started a Boycott the Vortex group.

If you can get past her attitude and the long wait and solely judge the taste of her hamburger; there is nothing close in Atlanta. I have travel all over the world and there is nothing close. The Vortex - best all around burgers. Top of my list.

Agnes & Muriel’s - Best specialty burger for the Fried Green Tomato Burger with goat cheese and red pepper sauce. Second on my list.

Five Guy’s - If you want a quick, flat patty, fast-food type burger, this is the best place to go. I do enjoy 5 Guys, but I wouldn’t put them in the same league as Vortex and A&M. But they are the best fast food burger you’ll probably find near your home.

Evidently, the Counter just got the Internet, not sure where they were a few days ago.

If you like red meat, we all have a preference. Even the t-bone at Waffle House is popular, but it’s hard to find a bad burger. I enjoy them all.

Maybe some people’s problem with 5 guy’s is that they cook the meat well…obviously that is not preferred, but you can’t argue the freshness.

IF you can add good meat with good bread, it’s a start. 5 guys does that too. Seriously, is a 99 cent double at Wendy’s quality + their fries suck.

I would like to suggest that you update your “our list of spots where you can get a burger in and around Atlanta.” link because the number one suggestion that comes is “The Loop” in Sandy Springs and they have been out of business for almost a year. There is a FishMonger there now. :)

The Old Blind Dog Irish Pub in Milton/Alpharetta serves the Edinburgher, a half pound of premium beef topped with Kerrygold vintage chedder cheese and thin strips of fried onions that is the finest burger I have ever put in my mouth. Served in an authentic pub atmosphere with a cold Bass Ale, burgers don’t get any better.

Taylor, you asked about the south side. East Point Corner Tavern (also L5P & Edgewood locations) does a good burger plus they have hand-cut fries with yummy dipping sauces. Try the Trippin’ Heidi burger. Also, there’s a little spot called Taco Pete in East Point. They make a great turkey burger and have yummy fries. Other than those, I choose The Highland Tap, The Earl, George’s and Table 1280 at the Woodruff Arts Center.

We actually pulled off an article 2 years ago for a local pub and graded about 11 restaurants — Vortex (yet again) pulled it off as the leader with the yummiest burger. It also helps that the Tots are excellent companions. FLIP is a nice addition to the ATL burger scene, and although the burgers are really cleverly put together and tasty, Vortex is still king.

Ok, Although I NEVER heard of Ann’s before, I’m gonna go try a burger there. I will however be really PO’ed if my fat a** stands in line for 6 hours and uses up all 1500 of the calories I get on this diet per day and the burger sucks.

Hmmmmmm……… wonder if I jog in place the whole time I’m waiting I can burn enough calories to eat TWO burgers………

The local McDonalds seems to sell the most, so if everyone else is so good, why are they not going there?

Its a shame those other places have to charge so much for their burgers. Marking this stuff up 4 to 6x’s is terrible..

I went to Red Robin Burger in Chattanooga and paid $10 for a stupid burger. WHAT A RIP OFF.

Flexible solar array paddle of Space Flyer Unit(SFU) are deployable structures like an accordion door. During the retrieval of SFU, inner panels of each paddle were folded back in the contrary direction and the paddles could not completely fold up. In order to reproduce the behaviour of the panel, we carried out an experiment of the retraction behavior of a membrane deployable structure under microgravity condition using a drop shaft. Moreover, its retraction behavior is analyzed by investigating potential energy of the system. These results give suggestion simple and light weight ways which can avoid folding back in the contrary direction

I am not sure how much respect or credit I would give Best of the Big A. My wife and I went to Holeman & Finch at 2277 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia last night for “Donuts”. Based upon an article in Best of the Big A………It stated they had the best donuts in Atlanta. When we got there……they no longer served donuts. There entire menu has gone in another direction. I could not relate and we left without donuts.

Since Carey’s closed down on 41, I have quit trying to find a comparable burger. It had it all—-the jukebox, ambiance, unbelievable fries, service like you’d expect in a place like that, and rarely a wait (unless the cops were there after a fight).

Sorry folks. Carey’s has no comparison—-not even close.
