Where can you get the best barbecued ribs in and around Atlanta?
We have our winners.
You picked a relative newcomer, at least as a stand-alone restaurant. Jonathan and Justin Fox have been running a catering business (and, for a time, sold fine barbecue out of Smith’s Olde Bar) for years now, but Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q has only been a restaurant for about two years. That’s long enough for readers to fall in love with the joint’s ribs (and its many other barbecued goodies). Check out the complete list of your favorite places to get ribs in and around Atlanta.
In a way, our dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman went with a newcomer, too. But Dave Poe’s isn’t really new. It’s just the new name for Sam and Dave’s BBQ2. The proprietors of the two barbecue landmarks have each taken charge of one of the former Sam and Dave’s locations. For the Top 5, take a look at the list of our picks for the best ribs in and around Atlanta.

Nothing, and I do mean, NOTHING, can beat Fresh Air Barbeque in Jackson, Ga. I think they have another location around Macon too.
Till Atlanta’s BBQ can top Fresh Air BBQ’s game, they just need to stay in the minor leagues.

May 11, 2009 1:43 PM | Link to this
C’mon people! This question comes up every spring. It’s all subjective. It all depends on the person’s tastes.
If you’re the fat, lazy, blubbering type, then you prefer Shane’s cause chances are you’ll find one somewhere and you won’t have to drive too far.
If you’re the snobbish type from Emory Univ. then you like Fat Matt’s because you have a lot of patience and you need patience when you go there. Plus, you’re in midtown and you can come out of the closet for a spell.
If you got big money and you don’t care about cost then it’s KC Pit on Roswell Road.
If you never been anywhere else you like Sergeant Wyatt’s place.
If you got big buck teeth that can chew through a Florsheim’s shoe then you like Billy Bob’s stuff.
If you….well, you get the picture.
Y’all enjoy y’all’s ribs!

Would you intelligent people please stop nominating these franchise establishments like Dreamland’s and Shane’s and the rest of the fake BBQ places. The food is OK, but it is so like fast food. We are talking real BBQ, where they cook on the grill for several hours. Not a place where the workers fire up the ovens one hour before they open .Tip: Anyplace where you can get coupons in the newspaper or delivered in your mail is not real BBQ ! I am glad this question came up. My elderly mother rarely gets out and i talked her into a visit to Dreamland-Roswell, mid afternoon, weekday and it was the worse food(ribs) I have ever had. Look people, as stated earlier, rib meat should not fall off the bone. It should take a gentle pull for the meat to release. Also, when cutting ribs into two rib pieces, a pink smoke ring should be visible. I like to use apple and hickory.

May 11, 2009 3:21 PM | Link to this
You people just need to drive up the road a bit to Asheville, NC where you will find the absolute best ribs you will ever put in your mouth at a little joint on the river called 12 Bones Smokehouse. And please do us a favor as you’re leaving town and take the Shane’s franchise that’s opened up here back with you. It’s giving BBQ a bad name.
By Nelson
May 11, 2009 3:24 PM | Link to this
How can anyone nominate Shane’s? While their BBQ is passable, their sides are barely edible.
They say their mac-n-cheese is homemade. Yeah, if your homemade comes out of a Kraft box.
We used to like OB’s down in McDonogh but lately their food has not been good.
Another vote for Fresh Air down in Jackson, GA.

Went to Jim n Nicks in Duluth last night and the ribs were terrible. Not fall off the bone as the waitress described. Then the manager came over and admited they were the last ones they had. We got the bottom of the barrel. The rest of the food there was ok.

This is sooo subjective. It depends on what type of BBQ you like. I actually thought that Swallow and the Hollow was rather run of the mill and had too much char on them that took away from the taste of the meat. There are a ton of good places in Ga. to have good BBQ. depends on how you like them.

Let’s be realistic: Atlanta is not a rib town. Compared to Chicago (think Carson’s Ribs) and KC (think all over town), we do not have a legitimate rib joint that consistently produces flavorable, well-cooked ribs that are not loaded with fat. If you are going to rank ribs, mail order some from Carson’s, and use that as your baseline.

Just went to Daddy D’z yesterday for the first time - smoky ribs, good portions, variety of home cooked sides. Fat Matt’s is consistent, reasonably priced (military discount too!), and has a bold BBQ sauce. I’ve yet to try Fox Bros but I like my BBQ joints a little bit more on the dirty side…everytime I pass it I keep driving. Besides, the former two have free live jazz to go with the Q? How you gonna act?

If the O.B.’s in McDonough is as bad as their old location in Locust Grove was before it closed, then they need to shut the doors.
Fox Bros. does have some very good ribs (Personally, I go there for the brisket.), as does J.R.’s Log House in Peachtree Corners (The guy behind J.R.’s used to work for the Old Hickory House back when they used to be a decent-sized chain.).
While Smokey Bones, is a chain, they do have some pretty decent ribs (Most chain BBQ places I avoid because they’re too bland.). Anyone who considers Shane’s ribs to be good must have not sense of taste at all. BBQ without smoke is not BBQ. If I wanted ribs cooked in an oven, I’d stay at home and make them myself.

Lotsa chains have ribs. Some are okay. Most are boiled, bland and barley notable. Good ribs? Easy: Fox Bros., Swallow/Hollow and Jim N’ Nicks. Great ribs? A secret place in Gainesville called The Hickory Pig, only open a few days a week and worth the wait and the drive. The ribs are pit-smoked over hickory and huge and meaty. Never have seen, heard of, or eaten better ribs. Keep this place a secret for us true rib lovers; we don’t want it to franchise and become like everyplace else.

In Atlanta:
Fox Bros., the best. Rolling bones, different style, very smoky, also excellent. Fat Matt’s, go for the music and the scene, not the food. Daddy D’z was once a favorite, has really declined in the past ten years. Went in a few weeks ago and my ribs were pretty pathetic. Expect to see a Pollo Loco or Moes on that corner within a year or two.
Also, stop talking about Memphis, etc. This string is ribs, presumably spareribs and not baby backs, in and around Atlanta. Jackson and Gainesville and Tuscaloosa and Athens are not in and around Atl.

There IS something to that ‘the best ribs are in my backyard’ thing. Learn how to smoke, find a good rub and sauce and honestly, decent ribs fresh out of your own smoker are better than the best ribs in the world that have been under heatlamps somewhere…

I have been to Williamson Bros, Daddy Dz, Fresh Air in Macon, OB’s, Shane’s, Dreamland, Famous Dave’s, and many others that I didn’t think were up to par. Fatt Matt’s and a brother that cooked at a Chevron station on the corner of Jackson Parkway near Bankhead are the absolute best that I have had in the Metro area. Dreamland in Mobile is good also.

Abdullah the Butcher - a bit of a drive, but the most amazing thing I’ve ever tasted.
Also Rolling Bones - don’t care much for their sliced/chopped pork but their ribs are excellent.
Of course, there are plenty of good ribs outside of Atlanta too…
Other notables - Daddy Ds, Maddy’s.
I tried Shane’s once and didn’t make it past the first rib. Disgusting. And Williamson Bros. has always seemed very bland to me. Maybe it’s just not my style. Also, Harolds may have been good at one point but is very average now.
Confession - Fatt Matt’s isn’t bad.

Everyone, the topic here is best RIBS in and around ATLANTA. Don’t wanna hear about sides and desserts, don’t wanna hear about pulled pork, don’t wanna hear about Memphis, Kansas City, Alabama or Chicago. (You forgot NC and Texas, btw) I’m sure there’s great BBQ there, but we’re talking about RIBS… HERE. Got it?

For local ribs, Big Shanty on Cherokee Street in Kennesaw can’t be beat. Smoked out back, they are the real deal. Williamson’s in Canton and Marietta are also good if you are in the neighborhood. Country’s in Columbus is very good and has the best banana pudding as well. However, the best I ever had was Jack’s Old South BBQ in Cordele. Multiple Memphis in May winner and has won hundreds, if not thousands, of BBQ contests. I’ve had ribs in KC, Texas, Memphis, NC and here, and Jack’s was the best ever.
Dreamland may be good in Tuscaloosa, but here the meat is tough and gristly. -1 for Dreamland. Any of the chains (like Smokey Bones, Shane’s and Sticky Fingers) are awful. Meat is cooked off-site, shipped to the franchisee, and reheated. Notice you’ll never smell smoke in any of those places. If ya can’t smell the smoke, then ya ain’t in a real BBQ place. Nuf said.

bbq Lover, thanks for that info. I have seen the guy at the Chevron on Jackson Pkwy., but never knew I could buy from him..I will Try his ribs..
Shane’s food is ok at best. Williamson Brothers, won’t even touch that one..Sam and Dave, tried them once, never went back..
Old South is off the chain, so if you’re ever in Smyrna, give them a try..There was a place in Marietta at one time called The Rib Shack, does anyone know if it’s still there?
I live in Doulasville and the best place that is close to me is Iron Horse in Villa Rica..Best BBQ of any kind that I’ve had in a years..

The best bar-b-que in Atlanta is at my house. But I don’t sell it. Just for the family.
You’ve got to go to the places where they take bar-b-q seriously. To cover a lot of places quickly, go to Kansas City or Memphis. After you sample those two places, everywhere else doesn’t matter.

Besides my house (I’m a St. Louis native, so Queing is the local past-time) the obvious best in Atlanta is KC Pit in Sandy Springs.

Thanks for the TIPs. Oh, I’m from OKlahoma. Near Dallas, New Orleans, ATL, Florida, etc. Our BBq is great too. ALL the beef is from TEXAS and Oklahoma and we raise beef. So there you go. Oklahoma and Texas is about steak, burgers, and the pork. Chicken is a close second.

The best BBQ Ribs (I must add the chicken as well) can be found at DB’s Rib Shack in Conyers, GA. DB makes his own barbecue sauce that complements his signature baby-back ribs just right!
One more thing, the Beer-Can Chicken is Off-the-Charts! Add the homemade mac-n-cheese and barbecue baked beans for an excellent meal.
