Where can you find the best ice cream in and around Atlanta?
We have our winners.
Readers went with a popular chain, which began back in 1989 in Pennsylvania. Bruster’s now seems to blanket the metro area with creamy treats. It was a tight showdown for No. 2 between a couple of locally based favorites. See who emerged victorious and check out the complete list of your favorite ice cream emporiums in and around Atlanta.
Our dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman’s list overlapped with the readers’ list just once, but that popular favorite, Morelli’s in Ormewood Park, was her No. 1. See who made her list of the best ice cream purveyors in and around Atlanta.

I was raised near Philadelphia where Breyer’s had its original factory, so I have always loved Breyers. I still love it, but I also am a huge fan of Blue Bell. However since this is LOCAL favorites I will go for Jakes - but fellow Jakes lovers beware of the one in Decatur on N. Decatur Road - 1st time icecream was WAY too soft 2nd + 3rd there were ice chunks. (there won’t be a 4th at that location)

I have made the 2+ hour drive down I-75 on multiple occasions simply because I got a hankerin’ for the best ice cream I’ve ever had in this area (and I hope you consider it in this area): the homemade peach ice cream at Lane’s Peach Orchards in Fort Valley, Ga. Wonderful, fresh peaches; lots of butter fat, and always perfect taste. Oh my, I think I better go gas up the car. Here comes the hankerin’ again.
My Top Five: (1) Peach Ice Cream at Lane’s Peach Orchards in Ft. Valley; (2) Paulo’s Gelato in Va Highland (the pear or green apple gelato or the “flower” flavors, like violet or rose); (3) an F.O. at the Varsity, curbside (does this count as ice cream? I think so.); (4) the Chocolate Gelato at Shaun’s in Inman Park; and, (5) the Lychee Ice Cream at the ice cream vendor inside Super H-Mart on Pleasant Hill Rd. in Duluth.
Yum. Thank you, Summer, thank you…

I lived in Atlanta for 12 years before being transferred to Pittsburgh - and found Bruster’s, which originates here in the ‘Burgh. So, I have to say the best ice cream in the ATL is Bruster’s - Key Lime Pie rocks!!! I have to agree with the several other posts though - Graeter’s in Cincinnati is a really good close second, even if it isn’t in Atlanta. Now if they only ask about the best sandwich - Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh rocks too!

They don’t have alot of flavors but their pineapple upside down cake is GREAT. They are so good that Jake’s actually purchased flavors to fill their case in past! So if the business owners insist on Hanks you should try. I also think we really should focus on our local guys not the chains.. Lets keep it here in ATL

I prefer Baskin Robbins, as they have the absolute best Mint Chocolate Chip. Coldstone is better for most other flavors.
Bruesters is average at best. I could get the same taste by buying Publix ice cream and leaving it open in my freezer for six months until the freezer burn sets in. It would taste about the same. Then again, it could just be lazy workers or managers not taking care of their product, but I have tried both the Bruesters in Alpharetta by my office, and the one by Lassiter High School as it is near my house. Neither one deserved much praise, though the one by work does make a nice Cinnamon Chocolate Milkshake.
For other treats, none of the recent competitors can beat the good ole DQ Blizzard, even though every fast food place has their own version now. And for soft serve, I still go with DQ, though Chick-Fil-A and McD’s are definitely in the same league.

Morelli’s, no contest. They were just named one of the top 10 ice cream shops in the country. You can go to Ann’s Snack Shop for the best burger in the country, then drive a mile south for some of the best ice cream.
(Plus Bruster’s uses powdered milk.)

My family and I LOVE Frosty Frog Creamery & Cafe in Canton. It’s at Hwy. 140 and East Cherokee Drive in the Hickory Flat community. It’s well worth a drive to the boonies to enjoy their homemade, fresh goodness and unique flavor choices. It’s not just another cookie-cutter chain. They have great coffees, quiches, and sandwiches, too, but that’s another story entirely.

Frosty Frog Creamery in Canton, GA has the best Ice Cream!!! You will find a great variety of normal and unusual flavors that are all homemade. I like the Reese Pieces and my husband likes the Cotton Candy. They even have one that taste like Fruit Loops.
You can’t beat the friendly service they provide. Take the family and make it a day trip because their Chicken Salad Sandwiches are wonderful, too.

The best ice cream in and around Atlanta, Ga. is Frosty Frog at Hickoy Flat just on East Cherokee and Highway 140. They have delicious ice cream all made at the store and many, many flavors. My favorite is Brown Sugar. Each flavor is unique and delicious. The ice cream taste like “good homemade ice cream” no artificial flavor. The friendly owners and help and atmosphere make the ice cream better. They also have delicious other food. The laid back atmosphere is great in todays’ hurry, hurry, society!!! The place is always clean. They also have a room if you want to have a party for your son/daughter’s birthday party. Again I highly recommend the creamy, tasty brown sugar ice cream, you don’t need a cone to enhance the flavor!!!
