Name the baby panda

If all goes well, it will be three to four months before Zoo Atlanta’s new baby panda cub can be seen by the public. Even the little guy’s, or gal’s, gender may not be known for weeks.

In additon to offering the folks at Zoo Atlanta and new mom Lun Lun your congratulations, how about giving them a couple suggestions, for either a boy or girl, on what to name the nearly furless bundle of joy?

It should be in keeping with the country of origin. A Chinese name would be best maybey something like CHANG m Chinese Means either “flourishing, prosperity” or “smooth” or “strength” in Chinese. according to the site it depends on charicter placement.

It would be cool if the the name could be announced in keeping with the Harvest Moon festival (early Oct)!!!!

In honor of Steve Irwin, who was a great conservationist beyone being just the crocodile man, “Stevie” for now. No doubt the Chinese will wish to offer a list to choose a permanent name from after 100 days.

He was a great environmentalist and a lover of all animals, not just a “croc guy” as people have mentioned.

I like “Stevie” in memory of Steve Irwin or “Cola”. Either could be a male or female name. I like “Stevie” more than “Irwin” because it sounds cuter, but I am definitely in favor of honoring the Crocodile Hunter. I wonder if he ever knew how much he was admired.

I think you’ll find I suggested Bling Bling in a Creative Loafing column in 1999. So it appears to be standing the test of time. I think if Steve Irwin, bless his heart, had died more than a year ago, people would be asking, “Who?” if someone suggested his name for the little butter stick.

I ALSO LOVE THE NAME “CRIKEY”, BUT SPELL IT…”CRI KEY” SO IT GOES ALONG WITH THE CHINESE NAMING…BUT “STEVIE” WOULD BE GOOD TOO. IT WOULD BE A SHAME NOT TO NAME HIM OR HER IN STEVE IRWINS HONOR. ALL ANIMALS HAVE LOST A DEAR FRIEND. NOT JUST CROCS.

We shouldn’t take ‘Chinese’ suggestions from people (most of us) who have no idea about anything regarding Chinese language or culture. Let’s name it something local. I’m liking Bling-Bling. I agree that it should be something keeping with either the South, Georgia or Atlanta…the baby can have both an American and Chinese name. Lots of people do it… My mom is Korean and has a traditional name, but most of her American friends just call her Sue. No co-relation at all to the 2 names….but I dont know if I like Steve or Irwin… maybe Crikey would be OK.

Since China does own the baby panda no matter what and it’s going back to China after Zoo Atlanta finishes its studies, they’re probably going to want an authentic Chinese name. Steve Irwin was a great conservationalist and loved ALL animals, but I don’t think Chinese government is going to want to call the panda “Stevie” or “Irwin” or “Crikey.” Granted I’m not Chinese, so I could be wrong… Also knowing the staff cause I used to work at Zoo Atlanta for a long time, they’re going to want to stick to an authentic Chinese name as well. There are other ways of honoring Steve Irwin (rest in peace). But I think that’s really great that everyone wants to do that. Anyway, I like the fire-bird name in Chinese, Huo Chu, by Wilson because compromises can be made. It unites Atlanta and China!

Since the new baby panda is owned by China and will return there one day, I would think the Chinese government would want an authentic Chinese name. I loved Steve Irwin too, and I think it’s great everyone wants to honor him, but there are other ways. Though he did love ALL animals, I don’t think the Chinese want to call the baby “Stevie” or “Crikey”, but I’m not Chiniese, so I could be wrong. The cub goes back to China in two years and they will name it what they want no matter what we call it but I do love Irwin or Steve for a male and maybe good old Georgia or Atlanta for a female. An American (temporarily) panda needs an American (or maybe Australian) name.

I doubt that in China how many people know about Irwin or can pronouce Crikey or Stevie/Steve. I almost can assure you that the cub will have a traditional and authentic Chinese names no matter what. Hi`

I would like to suggest the name ”Yum Yum” i thought of that name watching Lun Lun cleaning her tiny ”miricle” i am sure that everyone at Zoo Atlanta are thrilled on this occasion, although i think ”Yum Yum” is a sweet name, i am sure that when the Pand’s are returned to China, the baby will be given traditional Chinese name? i hope the baby is healthy and does well.

what a miricle, thank you for the video,a nice respite from ”bombings, murder, and all the rest of the mayhem” that surrounds us!!

Steve Irwin once said: “I think I’ve actually got animals so genetically inside me that there’s no way I could actually be anything else. I think my path would have always gone back to or delivered me to wildlife.”

Steve Irwin was a special man who loved all animals and nature. The timing of two very rare events of world interest (the birth of a panda and the way Irwin died) are an indication to me that we should honor nature and the cycle of life by giving this panda a name that will in some way honor a man who dedicated his life to honor nature.

I found a website that translates an English name into a Chinese Name.

How ironic - tan vs. khaki and Shi also means teacher!

Irwin. What an awesome way for Atlanta to represent our love for Steve Irwin. Without a state funeral, many of us would love to sort out our grief by enjoying his love of wildlife, by coming to see Irwin at the zoo. It just feels right.

I think a cut panda cub deserves a name worthy for it. Here are a couple of suggestions. How about Al-zu for Atlanta Zoo? Or An-le, peace and happiness. Fu-qu meaning good fortune, because that’s what it is to have a panda cub born it your zoo. Bau You meaning bless and protect. Zhen, meaning precious thing, tresure. Hao yun, good luck. Or Hei po or Zao Po, both meaning black white. Irwin, I feel bad for the guy, but like someone else said, that’s the name of a CROC HUNTER, NOT A PANDA!

This is Atlanta. If I were going to post a candidate name twenty years ago, perhaps I might come up with something intelligent. Today, I think the name “bling bling” best suits Atlanta’s demographic population. Lately the capital city of Georgia seems to be best known for it’s superficial and criminal African American (black) population.

Here are my suggestions: for a girl, Zhong Tao meaning - China Peach. For either boy or girl, Hua Yi, meaning - non chinese citezen of chinese ancestry. We must all remember that these gentle giants are from China and will therefore be returned to China at some point in time, even the babies born here, they are not ours to keep, but to enjoy. In keeping with Chinese tradition the new baby will have a Chinese name but it’s name in translation can incorporate it’s location of birth. China ultimately has the final approval.

Altho it breaks the double name tradition, how about the Chinese sounding name of: Lan Tah? It gives the birthplace its own honor as well.

name it Roar!

In October of 2005, My 10 person youth group and I attended the NCYC youth conference held in Atlanta Georgia. To complete the trip the best way we could, it was a unanimous vote to visit the Atlanta Zoo. My group and I stayed at the zoo for hours! We loved it! Our favorite attraction by far, was the panda exhibit. In fact I met a young bo there attended NCYC who was also visitng the panda, and we have become best friends. If it wasnt for a visit to the Atlanta Zoo, I would have never met Sean. Its been almost a year now, and we still talk about seeing the pandas at the Atlanta Zoo, and we really will never forget it. The best name for the panda would be Roar. Its a female and male name, and one that suits a panda perfectly, not by color, but by the strong connection and relationship you can recieve, when you too, visit the Atlanta Zoo. Thank You very much.

I think the name should continue Chinese tradition, but also have a meaning to Atlanta on how long with have waited and hoped this would happen. It should also represent something for the future. It should be a Chinese name meaning hope and faith.

I think they should name the baby Fu Xiongmao, which means Lucky Panda. They could call it “Fu Bear” for short.
