How are you coping with smog, heat?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For the third consecutive day, the city is under a Code Red alert. That means air pollution is expected to hit levels that are unhealthy for almost everyone. How are you, friends and relatives coping? Staying inside more?

It’s good to be able to see the air - that way it can’t sneak up on ya and get ya from behind!

So far we’ve had a relatively mild summer; for that, I’m glad. Hopefully this polluted air will be washed away sometime soon!

I will cope with the smog by keeping the windows up and the a/c on in my Suburban; and I will cope with the heat by keeping the windows up and the a/c on in my Suburban.

I just need to get thru this week and then it’s 2 weeks on a lake in upstate New York. That’s why I go on vacation at the end of summer. I’m over the heat…I get a bit of a vacation from it…and then I’m back in the ATL for the cooler Fall temps.

Allowing the smog and heat to disrupt my daily routine would be giving the smog and heat what it wants. Therefore, I am going about my daily life as normal, as if it weren’t there. Remember, you can’t negotiate with smog or heat!

I think smog is just another made up term thrown around by left wing crack pots to further their hippie agenda. It’s no more real than global warming. It’s all a bunch of liberal nonsense. I will keep driving my SUV 37 miles each way to work every day and I will keep spending MY money on the gas to fill it’s tank. Thats why I work, to buy the things I want. Now take your liberal crackpot idealism back to Hell where it belongs.

It is true that some politicians may try to use phenomenoms with nature to bolster a political agenda. However smog is not healthy at all. Whether you drive an SUV or a compact hybrid, it would beehoove you to drive with the windows up.
Maybe if they did not make hybrids so wimpy looking I would drive one.

Well I will continue to be smart. See you keep cooler when you have your windows up and use your A/C. Why is it that every mexican and darky I see driving has their windows down when it is 95 degrees? It cracks me up. They will be in a 2007 new Lexus with the windows down, sweating their butts off. Are you that cheap?

Ha, caught you red-handed, Hunter! “Two and from work…” You don’t work, remember? You go to lunch with your friends and go to your HOA meetings while your and I quote “nanny takes care of your children’s menial needs.” People, just so you know, Hunter posts this type of inflammatory statement over in MOMania and other places all the time. He/she claims to be a non-working Mother. In other words this person is not giving his or her actual, authentic opinions. Only canned responses designed to stir up trouble.

Actually Skip I prefer the heat to the a/c. And some of “those” people you refer to, were raised in weather like this, they are used to it. Especially those of us who grew up in the Nevada/California dessert. It’s wimps like you that NEED your a/c going full tilt. I actually keep my thermostate at 80 at home.
I also love to drive with my windows down. I sit in an air-conditioned office freezing, because my co-workers are fluffs like you, so I love getting into a hot car, and riding home with the windows down, and my hair blowing in the wind. Sometimes I wish I had a convertible…….

It doesn’t bother me too much. I just keep the windows up in my GMC Yukon. But it was hot today when I left for my office at 8 am, when I went home for lunch at noon it was really hot! I was sweating like a pig when I was filling up my truck this afternoon. Oh well, if this is the price I have to pay to drive abuot 40-50 miles a day in my sweet SUV, who cares! It’s just the environment. I’ll fly out on a commercial airliner to some place if I want to get out of here.

I agree w/ Hunter. Smog is a made up term. Just like Global Warming. Anyone w/ a lick of sense knows global warming is nothing but a myth, propagated by the liberals just to promote their gay agenda. So it’s a little hot. Just roll up your windows, gas up the Suburban, turn on the a/c and cruise cruise cruise!

Have we managed to make it this far down the blog and not one person mention that it is a racial thing or Mike Vick? WOW!
Anyway, I think its hot here because George Bush doesn’t like the black people. He is republican so he probably made a deal with God to put an extra sun over Atlanta to make it extra hot and punish them. Just like he did to France a few years ago when they had that heat wave.

Smog and Global Warming are the result of Al Gore and Michael Moore talking too much. If they would sit down and shut up once in a while maybe all of their hot air wouldnt be causing global temperatures to spike, and maybe you could walk outside without wheezing due to the smog (caused by their lack of oral hygeine).

i have a better idea…how bout we take the licenses & cars away from all the uga fans? that’d solve a lot of problems, including pollution, traffic, oil consumption, and “global warming”.
let the people drive their SUVs. if they wanna pay $60 per fill-up, let them. that’s what makes America great—personal choice.

I played in a golf tournament on Saturday afternoon in Acworth. There were over 100 participants and the tournament started at 2pm (shotgun start). Definitely one of the hottest rounds of golf I’ve ever played, if not the hottest. I ended up drinking 3 bottles of Gatorade and 1+ bottles of water. One of the players suffered a heat stroke.

Can’t wait for a business trip coming up that’s taking me to Denver the week after Labor Day. Every day will be a sunny, dry and beautiful 75-80 degrees. No haze, no humidity, no thunderstorms, no gridlock. I may even take a couple vacation days and drive up into the Rockies for some R&R.

CBL I am from Boulder, Colorado, about 30 miles away from Denver. If you get a chance, drive over to Boulder. Check out the Pearl Mall, which is right down town, on cobbled streets. Street performers at night, very laid back. Also, take a drive up Boulder Canyon to Netherland, 45 minute drive, and there is a beautiful lake up there I fished in as a child.
And if you can get to Estee’s Park, I highly recommend that area too.
Also, while in Boulder, try going up Flagstaff mountian, and be sure to take your camera!!!
man I miss Colorado……

Smog is bad and it just gets worse every year and more people move into the area and drive their cars around making more and more pollution. There is no where left that people dont invade with their cars and their boats and jet skis and other polluting and noisy machines. It’s a sad time for the world.

JJ, I’ve been to Boulder a few times to visit friends there. What a great college town with a great bar and restaurant scene on Pearl. Buddy of mine lived right behind Lucile’s and the beignets were irresistable. Always look forward to going there.
Just a few more weeks and it’ll be nice again here in ATL (hopefully!) like it was in June and early July.

Why don’t all you smoke haters just join in and get an outside smog ban? I’ve been telling people who b#$ch about it for years that the air we breath is much more dangerous than nicotine. Sure, neither are good for you, I just wonder who you fuss to about the smog. Maybe we could adopt smog free cities and enclose them in domes with purified air pumped in (that’s the future). We’re destroying this world as you can look out your window and see today and we still have the whining SUV drivers fussing about smokers driving their hondas. Your gas fumes do more damage than my cigarette smoke.

Everyone is to blame for Smog and Global Warming, but especially the selfish idiots who clog the roads with their SUVs and CARs and TRUCKs. You should take public trasit, or walk or ride a bike. You are killing our beautiful mother with your arrogance and once she is dead we will follow, as the umbilical cord can never truly be cut. Look at the face of your mother in every living thing and see how your selfishness makes her weep.

First of all, I have asthma, so I’m not terribly amused by the weather we’ve been having. It’s awful. I am also not amused by the person I saw today in the Abernathy Square Publix lot who had their car running and wasn’t anywhere near the car! I walked from one side of the shopping center to the other to pick up my dry cleaning before going into the Publix, and was appalled that someone would do such a thing. I should have left a note, but I didn’t take the time.

I would LOVE to take public transit. Only the good folks out here decided a long time ago that they didn’t want MARTA getting near. I hear it had something to do with racism… which is so hard to believe here in Georgia. Where the first thing real estate agents and leasing agents tell you is “how dark” it gets. During the day. I would love to see an AJC story on that little gem. As a former real estate agent, I can tell you that kind of “code” is illegal, as well as being crass, outdated and pathetic.

It’s August, always been hot in August. What’s changed is the generations of peolple who go from cold a/c homes,to cold a/c cars,to cold a/c busnesses. If they spend any time out in the natural heat they think they’ll die. Look at old baseball fan photos & you see male fans wearing suits, ties, and hats (IN AUGUST HEAT). They are also thin and enjoying life, not whining!

Cut Off, I agree with you - excellent word choice - crass, out-dated and pathetic is exactly it! I happen to live in a very, to quote those unprofessional agents you speak of, “dark” area and I love it because I love my neighbors and I ride MARTA to work every day. That type of comment from anyone is so behind-the-times and unproductive. Get a clue and build MARTA out so that we can all use it to get around, from the airport all the way up to Athens and out to Conyers and Mableton. Our roads, bridges and air quality can’t take much more of Atlantans’ love affair with their cars. Meanwhile I’ll enjoy my 10-minute train ride, which is not bringing crime to my area any more than the shootings lately in Gwinnett have been due to criminals being on foot or driving a car.

Gas can inch up to $10/gallon and people will still pay for it. It won’t be until there’s a fuel shortage that people will really wish they had “gone green” when they had the chance.

Hi: I have a friend who likes to drive in heavy traffic with windows down. Is this safe? Doesn’t traffic pollution get into our lungs and eyes? I feel it would be safer to use the air conditioning. He has dry eyes, and uses eye drops, etc. I certainly don’t want to get emphysema from this practise.
