Is your office like ”The Office?”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
NBC’s hit comedy “The Office” returns at 9 tonight with a one-hour special, certainly one of the high points of the new TV season for its many fans.
The show is frequently as uncomfortable as it is funny, since it’s about people who have no clue how pathetic they are. There’s Michael, the blustery buffoon who fancies himself a great leader; Dwight, his second-in-command with facist tendencies; Jim, who’s bright but passive; a lush, a chatterer, a rule-obsessor, and a host of others who fail regularly in their personal and professional lives.
Is your office like “The Office?”” Do you work for a Michael Scott? Have any of the events on the show happened at your job? Remember, you can be anonymous!

I identify a lot with Jim. Office politics getting people ahead of those who actually do the work does drive me crazy.
I have to admit that both now and in the past, I’ve worked with women who thought the office was their personal dating service. Then there was the tech company boss who couldn’t fax or look up any thing beyond his e-mail, but was sure of his own leadership abilities. Then there was the guy who was the Tennessee Vols fan and had more memorabilia in his cubicle than a professional collector. Of course, every body has a lush in their office. If you think you don’t, you are probably in denial. Working with retired military reminds you that they are either completely normal or borderline fascists. Well kinda, sorta. It makes life interesting.

I have worked for a manager the was VERY similar to Michael Scott. He always thought he was friends with his employees, and not self aware AT ALL. He would frequently try too hard with disastrous results, and often came off looking like a moron. Like Michael Scott, he was a good person, just really clueless.

I absolutely work in that office, and I try to be like Michael every day. Unfortunately no one else in my pathetic office watches the show, so my random quotes from the show go right over their heads.
I guess most just think I am plain weird - kinda like “the office” thinks about Michael.
My only question is this; Which bears best? Black or brown bear?

I also worked with a guy who had worked for a sheriff’s department. He said he couldn’t watch Reno 911! because he knew and had worked with all those characters.

World’s Greatest Boss: Bears Beets Battlestar Galactica.
I have worked with an Angela and a Kevin. I think every office has a Dwight— maybe not to the new level that Dwight is— but there has to be an office suck-up/yesman/punching bag.

Watching The Office makes me (briefly) miss my days as a receptionist. Certainly not for the pay, or the drudging work, but for the fact that you got to know everything about everybody. And you’d get people walking up to your desk and spouting off about the colleagues. And you knew that a lot of the boss’s front of competence was actually because of the things you did. Sometimes, it really was like being “Secret Assistant to the Regional Manager.”
These days my office is nothing like The Office, but I still love the show (and the British version, too!). I have a co-worker who will toss quotes back and forth with me. (TUNA! Are you KIDDING me?)

I work in an office where only the women are required to make coffee, clean the kitchen and answer the telephones in addition to our normal, daily work routine. We even had an employee get uninvited to our annual Christmas party after submitting her four week notice/letter of resignation.

I CAN’T WAIT for the season premiere of ‘The Office’ tonight. My fiancee and I are nuts over that show. Anyone who hasn’t watched it should rent the DVD sets and get ready to laugh your butt off.
It’s an amazing, funny, ultra-quick show and the smartest on TV.

I worked in an off that was worse than “The Office”. We had a VP that wore a whig for over 5 years and showed up without it one day and pretended he got a haircut. There was also a woman that was so dumb when she would take a phone message with an email address she would use the word “at” instead of @.

I guess I’m one of the few that finds “Office” to be more uncomfortable than funny. Though I applaud the producers for trying something different, the Brittish version works a lot better. On the other hand, “My Name is Earl” and “Scrubs” really are smart and funny, so is “30 Rock.” That’s what I look forward to watching on Thursday night. I find something else to watch when “Office” comes on.

Most offices have one or two of the type characters on the TV program. What makes that show great, is they put all of these types together in one office. In business, a place like “The Office” couldn’t exist because they don’t do anything productive. But government offices, such as FEMA, are a different matter. Our Michael Scott-like President thinks that Australia is Austria and that Sadam murdered Nelson Mandella, who claims to be alive and well in South Africa.

Our office has a 1-1 ratio of manager to employee. One person was hired as temp employee and 2 years later he is manager of an IT environment. He can’t even format a floppy disk. 5 years ago this was a great place to work, now I brushing up the resume.

Have you noticed there are a lot of TV shows set in crazy offices nowadays? Well, I was watching one of them the other night—I think it was the one about the newspaper—when a thought occurred to me: They should do a sitcom about our crazy office!
Believe me, those offices on television pale in comparison to what goes on over here at Tri-State Consolidated Distributing. Our office is so full of crazies, I call it the loony bin!
You know that ditzy redhead on Suddenly Susan? Well, she’s nothing compared to Rhonda, our office manager. Okay, here’s an example: Rhonda’s constantly forgetting to reorder toner for the office copy machine. So last Friday, which is supply-reorder day at the office, she showed up to work with a reminder note that said “Toner” taped to her forehead! She’s so nuts!
Then there’s Rose, our assistant customer-service coordinator. Believe me, those folks on The Drew Carey Show couldn’t hold a candle to her. Rose has this coffee cup that says, “Don’t Talk To Me Until I’ve Had My Second Cup Of Coffee,” that’s the type of person she is. Once, she tore a page out of a Victoria’s Secret catalog, taped Ron’s face over one of the models’ and posted it in the break-room bulletin board! Maybe I should call up the folks at Drew Carey and tell them about Rose. Then again, they may not be ready for her!
We even have a Jewish person here, David, who’s always complaining about something. If they did a sitcom about us I don’t think they should make David Jewish, though, because that might seem racist. I’d have him look and act the same, but give him an Italian last name.
And, of course, I mustn’t forget to mention Mr. Landers, our boss. He has got to be the grouchiest man alive. Whenever he comes down to Receiving, he always bellows something like, “Why is everyone standing around? Is this National Stand Around The Office And Do Nothing Day?” We always jump back to work, but as soon as he’s gone, someone makes a crack about the out-of-date ties he wears. Sheila, one of the customer-service representatives, did this hysterical impression of him at last year’s Christmas party that still makes me laugh to this day. (Sometimes I think we don’t have employees here—we have inmates!)
And just like the bosses on those TV shows, Mr. Landers is constantly trying to break up our fun. One day, we were having a little party at Eileen’s desk on her first day back from maternity leave, and everybody was giving her all these crazy gag gifts. Mitch got her a pair of earplugs “for all the crying she was in for.” Renee got her a bottle of Calgon because of those commercials where the woman is cooking and cleaning, and the kids are crying, and she yells, “Calgon, take me away!” (Eileen, Renee and I all yell that now whenever the phones start ringing off the hook!)
Well, our fun didn’t last long. Hearing some sort of commotion at Eileen’s desk, Mr. Landers came in and said, “What’s going on here?” We told him it was a little party for Eileen, and he replied, “You’re going to be holding your party in the unemployment line if you don’t get back to work.” Can you believe that old sourpuss? But we got the last laugh: When he turned and walked out of Receiving, he had a “Congratulations” napkin stuck to the bottom of his shoe! Couldn’t you just see that as the end of an episode? I sure could!
So, if any of you big-city TV people are reading this, feel free to give me a call, and I could arrange to have you come down and meet the loonballs at Tri-State Consolidated. I think you’d have the next big hit on your hands!

I FREAKIN’ LOVE THE OFFICE!!!! LOL :o)
There is one character in my office who definitely belongs at Dunder-Mifflin’s Scranton branch; he’s a very religious guy (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) who’s also a health FREAK: works out like a manic and is very “organically-inclined.” He takes everything too seriously and has no sense of humor; he’s also WAAAAAAAY to happy at 8am!
We try not to be too catty (he’s the only man here) but it’s hard to resist…and he only makes it work when he says little things like, “You should make the coffee, Peachy, what else do you have to do?”

I am the only women in my area and I have come to realize that men NEVER grow up! Tell me, is a screaming monkey toy flying over three cubicles to scare the heck out of someone on a business phone call really funny? They think it is! They laugh until they are red in the face and out of breath. Then they proceed to do it three more times to three different people! I’ll admit that the first couple were funny but it’s been three months! Let it go! I guess being a woman, I’ll never understand…

Since I’m at work I won’t go into detail, but I can recognize Michael as a completely out of step goober that no one really likes. When I first started watching I wasn’t sure if it was a reality show. Over time it has grown on me; it’s so strange but I like strange. It never seems like anyone does anything remotely related to work, just off the wall stuff like chasing bats out of the air ducts and the boss taking the girls on an outing to the mall. Reminds me of Dilbert, and yes I probably will be watching tonight.

to Gary: The Office is absolutely the best show on Thursday night. Scrubs is stupid (and why has it been on for so long), Earl is fun and original, and 30 Rock is fun. But all 3 are expendable whereas The Office is a MUST SEE.
Recently, my boss started to morph into Michael Scott. He can’t remember scheduled doctor visits from one day to the next. And reminds me of the work load when I call to advise I am on my way in from the important doctor’s appointment. - no sensitivity, but unintentional because he is forgetful, clueless and disorganized.

We actually had a biting. One gal took it upon herself to clean out the refridgerator one night, but didn’t just throw out spoiled food. She threw out the things that common sense would tell you not too. Like canned sodas, and the bottles of salad dressing that people keep permanently in the break room frig.
This girl threw away some creamer that an Egyptian co-worker brought back from Eqypt when she went home on vacation. When the creamer gal got in the next morning, she noticed the empty frige. She confronted the clean up gal, and they got into it. Creamer gal promptly grabbed clean up gal’s arm and bit her!
Clean up girl screams “She bit me! She bit me!” and then doors started slamming, and people started laughing like crazy. Creamer girl did not get fired.

I worked for a shipping company in Savannah. Our “Michael” was named Bruce. He used to smoke in the office and would run his hand through his hair while holding a cigarette. One day he set his hair on fire and of course he said, “I meant to do that.” What an idiot/fool! We all worked in one big room and couldn’t close doors to laugh, so we did it in front of him. The writers will NEVER EVER run out of ideas for that show as long as offices and the imbiciles that run them are around.

Our office mismanager is a big joke but not exactly the Michael Scott kind. Most of her day is taken up with non-stop laughter and lunch plans. She has successfully narrowed her 8-hour a day job to a 5-hour one. (No one with any power seems to notice.) She has made an art out of narrowing her job description down to about two things…the rest just doesn’t get done. But no worries! She gives lots of little gifts to those who have power over her and ignores anyone else. Of course all the other staff loathe her and, since no one will do anything, have resorted to sticking pins in voodoo dolls. (It’s not working.) Where’s Dwight when you need him??? :D

Then on top of that they’ll stop speaking with one another, or we have one that wears the dresses way to short and then feels dumb after she gets to work. I like the concept of my job but the gossiping is too much. I’d rather work with all men!

I worked for a non-profit women’s organization that was supposed to hire qualified people. I was the minority and, as such, was treated with total disrespect. Never was asked to join in or take breaks/order lunch with the others. My boss was totally afraid of the other women in the office. She and I were in the same minority….aka white. One of my co-workers shook her extra-long sculptured fingernail at me, calling me “privileged”. It was said that I work “linearly”….WTF? Isn’t that the goal….to get from Point A to Point B?…I’m sure these folks would not recognize themselves…Not sure if the organization still exists….”9 to 5”….what a way to make a living….barely getting by…it’s all taking and no giving…ooops….can’t give away any more….might identify the “organization”..of which there was none..it was named after the movie after all….No equity, just racism….reverse racism at that….Hi C!….still afraid of your employees? Still kissing their boonkies? Jackie, still shaking that finger?
