Are we really that ugly?

The website Travelandleisure.com and CNN Headline News have released the results of an online poll of travelers and residents on what they like (and don’t like) about 25 large cities in the United States, and Atlanta is not going to be happy with the results.

There are many different categories, and we do better in some than in others, but what jumped out was that we rank 23rd out of 25 cities for people-watching, and 19th out of 25 for attractiveness of the natives.

What did we do well at? Barbecue. Oh, joy.

You can view all the results here.

Now this is not a scientifically valid poll, just online voting. But still. Is Atlanta really that ugly?

Atlanta natives UGLY ?? Voters must have mistaken the transplants for the natives.

Way too many poor, ugly people walking about downtown, as the only businesses located in the area cater to this demographic – fast food, check cashing, dollar stores, pawn shops, etc.

If you upscale the lower floors of buildings with restaurants, boutiques, galleries, fresh produce markets, and other proprietors of good taste, you will gradually be able to wedge the unattractive element of downtown away from where a visitor may view them.

And, omigod! You, may even give a tourist something to do other than being herded to the low-rent confines of Underground Atlanta. Think San Francsisco, Think Seattle, Think Vancouver or Toronto.

Fashion trends … hmmm, let’s see … gold “grills” trapping food particles and rotting teeth … pants so baggy and low they must be held up to waddle … hats cocked sideways for no apparent reason … a plethora of ugly and distracting tatoos … enough gold-plated and fake-stone-encrusted jewelry to blind those without sunglasses, which must be why so many wear oversized sunglasses at night (WTF???) … skin-tight stretch pants and stretch tops barely containing plus-sized female attributes … gee, I can’t fathom why anyone would think Atlanta’s “scene” is ugly … .

The people here eat all of this fried chicken and fast food. The suburbs are the worst. Look at the women that are 30+. Go to the west coast and you see the opposite. People actually care what they look like.

First of all…….What did we do well at? Where in h$ll did you go to school and learn that kind of grammar? People, “at” does NOT go at the end of a question!!!! Learn to speak correctly (notice I didn’t say properly, there is a difference)!!!

Anywho, all natives know that the majority of the people in Atlanta right now, are not Atlanta natives!!!!! They are mostly transplants, who come to our city, muck it up, give it a bad name/rep, and proceed to bash the city. If you don’t like Atlanta, GO HOME!!!!! If you’ve come to visit, GO HOME!!!!! Our fair city would be much better off without all of the ignorance that is transplanted daily!!!!!!! And mind you, that comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, (both) genders, origins, etc. Remember, GO HOME!!!!!

Vegas Sam, Don’t be so ignorant. Atlanta is no longer full of native Atlantans. Its full of people from the Northeast (New York/New Jersey) and Californians. Yea, fat Italians and fat Mexicans and fat west coast businessmen/women. We are adding a million plus people every 3 years. Gee, they put the brakes on caring after they moved here…..

There are a lot of uglies in Atlanta as well as a lot of attractives. The constant push in the area to bring in people from other areas, mix the races, promote diversity and homosexuals will do nothing more than continue to make Atlanta residents percieved as ugly.

I do agree with the previous poster about who the downtown businesses will attract. Might not be showing the best side of Atlanta.

Zeke, What push? Constant! Did I miss something? There’s no freakin push. People from Atlanta despise transplants and we do everthing we can to not to make you people feel at home. GO BACK HOME is what we want you to do. Your hometowns are broke, no jobs, cold weather, shabby housing, etc and you come here thinking we need you!? Take your bad thugged out kids and hit the road.

I challenge you to find streets strewn with chicken bones and lottery tickets in Toronto or San Francisco. But here in god ole Hotlanta, we get to rub shoulders with the like of which Faulkner never dreamed of still existing 40 years after his death.

i love Atlanta, as it has it’s own merits and although I have lived in the south my entire life, I humbly admit its shortcomings. A person like yourself, I have traveled all over and gained a diverse perspective of communities and people.

Since Georgia is only a few rungs from the bottom in education, you can see a pattern of metro areas with poor and ill-educated denizens. Ugly, dirty, violent, unintelligent people. Think Dallas, Think Montgomery, Think Memphis.

Until a major shift in education occurs in the south, I dare say we will always be on the losing side of beauty contests amongst our National rivals.

No Linderman, THINK ATLANTA, THINK MIDTOWN, THINK CASCADE. You aren’t thinking. You’re in Atlanta. I heard Minneapolis was nice. You ever thought about moving there? Atlanta is not going to change newcomers. It is what it is. But we can get it cleaner very quickly. Create a law that requires that you can only live here 1 year and go home after that. Maybe the streets will be a little cleaner, not as many cars tearing up our roads and defintely not all the implants children overcrowing our UNDER-EDUCATED schools. Question, Didn’t you check into our schools and education system before you rented the UHaul? YOU CHOSE to move to a state that had poor education!!That decision alone doesn’t make you sound too intelligent yourself!

One,

I moved to Atlanta from NY about a year ago and as far as I can tell the “transplants” are the most productive people in this city. From my experience the poor, uneducated and unproductive residents are usually the natives. The worst neighborhoods are areas filled with native Atlantans. Most of us come here for college or to better our lives in some way. Do you really think we would move all the way here to be unproductive? What would be the point? I could do that in NY. I mean come on.

I swear, AJC is as ignorant as they come!! Just like a lot of these transplants! And if it weren’t for goofing off, passing the day (while getting my work done), and being determined not to do any more than they pay me for right now (since they are determined not to pay me what I’m worth!), I wouldn’t read (let alone participate in) this crap at all!!!!!! WTF ?

As one of the few natives (Born in Dekalb General) left, I see nothing but locusts in the metro area… escapees from some other part of the country that didnt have jobs, or housing, or quality of life that then proceed to make over Atlanta into the living hell that they left.

Me! While that sounds very nice, it’s bullshyt!!!! I realize that you are only speaking from your own experience, but trust, it is bullshyt!! And riddle me this, if Atlantans are so bad, why come here? If you came for school, then graduate and go back! If you came here to “better your lives”, as you say, why would you do that to be around people who are unproductive? Can’t you be schooled, productive in your own city? Go back to NY and be productive, with your own productive native NY folks! It is contrary to say, “I came here to live a better life”, and then turn around and say, “the people of the city are so bad/unproductive/ugly/nasty!” How can one live a better life in a place like that? Come on now.

Typical Atlanta haters using this to vent about everything else. As for the actual question at hand - are Atlantans attractive - even the biggest haters has to acknowledge that this town and state are crawling with attractive people. Go out in Midtown, Buckhead, Marietta or Athens and you’re going to see beautiful people. I dare anyone to compare it to the Northeast or West. Last February I was in a trendy shopping mall in Century City / Hollywood / west LA and was amazed at how much better looking - just naturally better looking - the people of Atlanta are. Hands down, no comparison.

We’re not ugly. We are real people who haven’t fallen for all of the plastic surgery that those other cities have embraced. I guess once the plastic surgeons try to fix all of the ugly in LA then they will move to the rest of the country. But there is stilll lots of UGLY in LA so don’t look for things to change in ATL. You’ll still find real people here.

I’m a transplant from New Jersey…not by choice. My mother’s job re-located her years ago so there you have it. Now that I’m an adult and could go back to Jersey or elsewhere I’ve decided to stay…for now. Until my son gets through elementary school then we’ll see.

I will say that since I’ve been here (16 years) I’ve noticed that people EAT!!! I mean EAT!!!! For the life of me I can’t understand why almost everything needs to be slathered in grease, butter, salt, or slathered in anything period! Drink water….eat a salad!!!! They won’t hurt you, I promise. Get away from sugar riddled sweet tea..OMG!!!!….BUT Atlanta is okay. It’s grown on me for the most part. I think a lot of it has to do with Atlanta being so far away from water…i.e. beaches, ocean water, sand!!! When you know on a daily basis you can hit the beaches and shorelines after work, during lunch, and/or weekends it tends to make people more aware of their looks. At all times you have to be swimsuit ready. In Atlanta you don’t have that luxury. I’ve said before in my opinion Atlanta is missing water. Great city if you could move it 4 hours East. Then you may see a difference in appearances all around. And I have managed to remain in Atlanta away from water unless vacationing and am still a size 4….with curves. You just have to want to look good and feel good. When people get that lesson their appearances will change. At any given time I can go back home to the beach, which I take my son every year, my boyfriend is from Jamaica and has family in Dallas, TX, Ft.Lauderdale and San Fransico. I have to stay beach/pool ready at all times……So I could be wrong and that’s okay. BUT my answer……WATER!!!!!!

Simple explanation……It’s because of all the ugly a$$ YANKEEs (big noses, long faces and excessive body hair) and UPPER MIDWESTERNERS (flat faces and fat a*******es) that have infiltrated the Atlanta area over the last 25 years. Whatever idiots did the survey was observing transplants. I traveled nationally for 15 years and I know for a fact that there are no better looking women (sorry, I don’t look at dudes…can’t help you there) than in the south (but Texas and California are pretty close). Check out Athens, the GA mountain towns, etc. and find some real GA natives —— and you will see the good looking people!

look in ajc and compair what jobs offer to start and what it cost to rent a apartment. did it add up

I would be smart enough to move the hell on. Don’t make excuses, MAKE CHANGES. And King David, to answer your question about where would we be without Northerners? I can answer that with a question….Where were we before and without them? Building a city… grease, butter and all, that YOU ALL have now come here and terrorized and destroyed. That’s my opinion and story and I’m sticking to it. Atlanta didn’t have a gang problem until the little mobsters from NY moved here. Maybe a little murder every now and then, but you get the picture…Bad people delivered us their bad kids. Now it’s time for the offspring to move to back to NY New Jersey or PA or DC or somthin’,,,but MOVE is the point. You are now starting to overcrowd our jails.

One,

My neighborhood consist primarily of “transplants” who have come here and brought a significant amount of revenue and diversity to this grits and collard greens city. I mean before we came the biggest thing here was Coca-cola. Lol. Whether you want to admit it or not you and I both know the natives are destroying this city. The south side? I mean come on. It’s full of natives who drive up the crime rate. I never said native Atlantans were bad/ugly/nasty. Unproductive and destructive? Yes. Not all but a significant amount. I’m sure we too have contributed to the higher crime rate but it doesn’t even compare to what the natives have done. Natives are so defensive that they can’t even admit what’s obvious. Truth hurts.

P.S. Oh, and so what if I’m here because I can get a mansion for $300,000 :-) Why wouldn’t I capitalize on a golden oppurtunity? Seems like common sense to me.

ATL has many of the finest Black Women in the nation. Many of the Native Georgia black women are just plain collard green, corn bread, macaroni and cheese, bacon and grits fine. Booty, booty, booty, booty, booty everywhere. DC, Maryland and Virginia also have many fine Black Women. Now if you are turned on by that exotic afro-carribean latin look Miami(South Beach) got it going on! Many Puerto Rican women in Orlando are no less than stunning and many LOVE brothers. To say ATL does not have attractive people is just a plain lie. I like big butts and I can’t deny to the average Male African Black she must have much back!

I grew up in AL. I have a lot of friends that scraped up a couple $100 and moved to ATL. This is what contributes to the ills in ATL. ATL is so close to the worst cities and states in the country in terms of education and income. And they all want to move to ATL. ATL is like a nice big house in the middle of the ghetto. Sure it is a nice house. But it is in the ghetto nonetheless. I live in DC now. The level of sophistication in DC and NYC is miles ahead of ATL. Take out the black colleges, and ATL really would be left with nothing for black people to be so drawn to. Just look at ATL’s claim to fame: rap and hip hop music. That defines ATL. Just look at this website to see how pervasive it is. And regardless what you think, hip hop and rap is not what you would want to hang your reputation on.

There are a lot of poor and very uneducated people in ATL. I attribute that to ATL basically being in the middle of the poorest, uneducated part of the country. Everyone from AL, GA, MS, New Orleans, and SC look forward to move to ATL. I know. I’m from AL. These people bring their social ills and their poor education from their hometowns with them. ATL is like a nice house in the middle of the ghetto. Sure it is a nice house. But it is still in the ghetto.
I live in DC now. There is a wide gulf between the sophistication of the people in DC and NYC and ATL. There are few people walking around here with gold grills. The people are more highly educated. Not to mention there is vastly more wealth and better jobs.
ATL’s attraction to many blacks is the black colleges and the hip hop industry. Just look at the AJC to see the heavy influence of rap in ATL. I’m black. I like hip hop. But I wouldn’t want my city’s reputation so closely tied to an industry like rap music.
Here is where I think ATL comes up lacking relative to NYC, DC, San Diego, SF -Educated population -Wealth of population -Economy -Schools (CA has the best public colleges. DC and NYC have better colleges. So does the suburbs of DC with UVA and MD having very good schools and very affluent populations) -Better zoning laws. -Better newspapers. AJC isn’t even int he same league as NYT or the Washington Post. This is not meant as a criticism of ATL. Just an observation.

The fact that an (unscientific) online poll states that Georgians are ugly has very little to do with how attractive the people that live here are, and a lot to do with the personal preferences of the people being polled. For example, I simply have a preference for a different look than what I see here in Atlanta. Whereas I do not find men in baggy pants, side-turned caps, and gold “grills” attractive in the least bit, I am positive that if you polled them on my look, they would rank me (a size 2, naturally well-endowned, blonde-haired, green-eyed female) fairly low as well. However, in both instances, there are people out there that would find us attractive. Like mom always said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As for the poster that stated Midwesterners are a bunch of fat a**es… I feel a responsibility to correct you. A recent medical journal ranks Georgia among the most obese states in the nation, and contrary to your post, not one Midwestern state falls below it. Lastly, “SickofWiners” is right, Minneapolis is a nice place! When I get tired of hearing my single guys friends complain about the women here, I always suggest they spend some time in up there. I went to college in Minnesota, and was amazed by the sheer number or attractive people around me. I’ve never had one of those guys come back and tell me I’m wrong!

What’s up with blaming all the transplants? You folks are a bunch of xenophobes. The transplants bring in some hotties too. Granted, they also bring in some horrible drivers, and some nasty folks, but no more than we already got here in the dirty dirty. Downtown is riddled with natives that are rude and ugly as hell.

I was born and raised here and I’ll be the first to admit that the natives can be pretty ignorant and ugly - but, big BUT here, Georgia (and the south in general) has some of the most beautiful people in the world. no doubt. they might not be all that pretty on the inside though.

i do have to admit, from when i came here back in 89 to now, a lot of the “natives” have, gotten a LOT fatter…especially the females, who act like they dont wanna work and sit at home and watch jerry springer all day…but the females who Do care about themselves are very attractive…i went to san diego one year, and while there were some beautiful women, and everyone had the coolest attitude there, their females were flat as a board on the backside…i was happy when i returned to atlanta and seen buttocks the way they are supposed to be…

Last time I checked, ATL’s former mayor was just found guilty himself. Say what you want about Barry, he never was accused of enriching himself off the city.
And even with Barry, DC is still head and shoulders above ATL in Jobs, Educated Population, Income.
People always talk about how expensive it is to live in DC and NYC. That allows us to weed out the people that can’t make it here. It’s expensive for a reason up here. It’s called natural selection. I’m in NYC alot. I see signs there all the time appealing to people to move to ATL for the cheap housing.
As I said, ATL is so close to such undesirable cities like Memphis, B’ham, and terrible states (the rest of GA, AL, MS, SC, TN) that it inherits some of their ills. Just follow the gold teeth to see what I mean. People wearing gold teeth are mainly in the South.

I’m a proud native Atlantan, and yes, the city has been overrun by Yankees. Atlanta’s greatest time was during the 70s. Those of you who came after that really missed the TRUE Atlanta. The downhill started in the mid 80s and it continues…

All this talk about the south has me wanting to make some homemade biscuits! Betcha you Yankees don’t know a thing about that!

DC is a joke. Crime is horrible, twice as many murders happen in dc than atlanta. 40% of the people in southeast cant read. The only reason dc is “educated” is because of the people that move to dc, because the natives of dc are dumb. DC has the high aids rate in the country. They listen to that garbage go go music. The clubs are wack, nobody dances, they just stand around and look cute. The strip clubs are garbage. The only reason the income is high is because the cost of living is horrible. You are paying $1300 for a one bedroom apartment. The radio stations in dc suck. Atlanta has more entertainment than dc. We have had the Olympics, the superbowl, BET awards in Atlanta when the headquarters of bet is in dc…lol, you still cant vote in dc, metro is too expensive paying close to $10 a day to ride it and park your car, etc. I can go on and on, dc is a joke

So many people move to ATL and other cities because they are being weeded out here. Most of the wealth is still concentrated in the northeast and will continue to be.

  3. having lively debates about topics concerning the US and the world
  4. last but not least, the arts

Tony, You can have the BET Awards. Did you see how they were acting there? Not exactly the best reflection on black people right? Lil Wayne’s pants were down near his knees all night.
Sure SE is poor. But so is SW ATL. And there is no gimme gov’t job down there to pull yourself up from the bootstraps down there in ATL as there is in DC.
The transplants in both cities help the cities. Only thing is that many of ATL’s transplants come from the ghettoes and bring their poor state funded education, bad eating habits, and gold teeth with them to ATL. You don’t see people up here with gold teeth.
And since you mention the BET Awards, where does the FOUNDER of BET (the first black BILLIONAIRE, by the way) live? NW DC. Not ATL. Your restaurants aren’t even in the same league. Your newspapers aren’t in the same league. Your transportation options aren’t in the same league. Your colleges are nowhere close. All you can point to is soul food and rap music. That doesn’t appeal to the mainstream my friend. That appeals to a small minority of the population.
One of ATL’s biggest employers is Coke. That is a slow growing industry. Compare that to fast growing dynamic companies in DC like Lockheed, Northrup, BAE Systems, EDS, General Dynamics that generate a large percentage of their revenue in the DC metro area. That is why this area is in the top 5 richest metro areas in the country. And ATL isn’t even close.

The cost of living is horrible in the north, its too cold in the north, women cant cook in the north, its dirty, etc. Yet you all dislike atlanta so much but u are on ajc everyday when its millions of websites to look at? DC is rich because the COST OF LIVING IS HIGH!!! Its not like yall are making all that money with a cheap cost of living. Restaurants, unless you want to eat crabcakes all day dc restaurants are wack.

  • We had superbowls, DC hasnt had none. We had the olympics, dc hasnt had it, etc

  • Even Big Tig had his celeb weekend in Atlanta this summer, he didnt even have it in dc and this was his first time back in dc on that radio station…lol

-only good thing about dc are the jobs if u have a security clearance. But the cost of living is so high people are still moving away from dc.

  • strip clubs are garbage in dc

  • we have more blk colleges

  • we have more blk middle class communities…all the one’s in pg county u have to live with 40 guns to keep out thug from dc from breaking into your house.

-I can go on and on…dc is a good place to visit because you will be so happy once you go back home so you dont have to deal with the mess in dc

Compare the best restaurants in ATL to the best in SF, DC or NYC. There is no comparison. There is one rule that reigns supreme. Get as close to the source of the money as you can. The bulk of the money in America is on the coasts. There is more money between DC and Boston that it is in from ATL to Phoenix.
I don’t have a security clearance. I make 6 figures. And everyone I know makes 6 figures. That debunks your myth of needing a security clearance. Bottom line: The government and the government contractors are hiring at a break neck pace up here. You quit your job up here, no big deal. You lose your job in ATL. Big deal.
I’ll admit, ATL has better strip clubs. But is that something you really want to hang your hat on as an allure to the city? Sure ATL has more black colleges. But DC has the best black college—Howard. ATL may have more middle class communities. DC has more upper income communities. Montgomery County, Upper NW DC, and damn near all of Northern VA are some of the richest counties in the country. ATL has NONE of the richest counties in the country.

Transportation Colleges Income Arts Culture Entertainment Jobs All trump what little ATL has to offer. You can live in DC without a car. You better not even try that in ATL.

I am truly disturbed and saddened at all the hatred being spewed and aspersions being cast on this page. Can we not dialogue without resorting to insults? While we’re here debating whether natives or transplants are to blame for the degradation of Atlanta, thousands of our troops are dying for all of us: black, white, “yankees”, and “hillbillies” alike.

Ask yourself why a poll opining about the attractiveness of this city even offends you that much. Is it a symbol of your self-worth? Does it pay your mortgage, tuition, medical bills, or put food on your table? Then why do you care? If you feel insulted, there’s probably a deeper issue at hand, a problem from within that you’ve now projected onto someone else, figuring that bad-mouthing another would somehow compensate for your own ill feelings.

Beauty is subjective but hate is real. If a small, insignificant post yields such acrimonious responsed, why be surprised that the crime rate is so high? Let’s try and be a part of the solution instead of adding to the problem.

Tony, You do realize PG is a county and not a city, right? PG Cty is a much bigger county than Fulton or Dekalb. So it stands to reason that PG would have crime like any other urban area. ATL and its surroundings have enough crime as well. PG has 100K more people in a much smaller area than Fulton.
I see you are not an economist. But cities like Manhattan, DC, San Diego don’t get to be rich cities because they are expensive. It’s actually the other way around. Cities are expensive because a lot of well to do people live there. As such, they expect brick and not cheap vinyl. Marble, limestone, and granite instead of formica. I’m not saying that is right. It doesn’t even apply to me per se. But that is the way it is.
You can charge all you want for rent. But if no one has any money to pay it, you have to lower your price.

As an Atlanta native, I am quite proud to call it my home. I have never lived in the ghetto as stated by some, and my parents, both college educated, ensured that I had a great education. It’s interesting that we are so dumb, yet my friends and I have graduated from top universities all over the country. We are all successful, some have moved away, but many are still here living great lives.

I live a comfortable life, my kids are honors students with ITBS test scores in the 99th percentile (both are deemed gifted and I don’t even count CRCT scores are meaningful). Personally, if you guys feel so negatively about Atlanta then please leave. Yes, lots of blacks live here. That’s part of what keeps me here. My kids live in a neighborhood of highly successful blacks. When others visit they are amazed. They’ve never seen anything like it.

Are we perfect no, but we do live meaningful lives. And by the way, for those of you that swear that your kids know so much more up north, why is it that many of the teachers that I’ve met say the direct opposite? California teachers say the same. The educational system of this country is lacking, it’s not just down south. But hey, if you don’t like it, well, 85 or 75 will get you where you want to go!

As long as the majority of people in DC don’t have gold teeth, DC will always be head and shoulders above ATL.
If you actually look at the weather between DC and ATL, you would notice that DC isn’t much colder than ATL. My mom is always surprised. It is 75 here today. I see it is 75 in ATL today. And if you want to compare temps, the summer in ATL is just unbearable. The winter is not so bad in DC either. I’m from AL. I thought it would be unbearable. Remember, it’s up South as you like to call it. At least we don’t get the tornadoes like parts of the south.
I know a lot of people in ATL that are struggling making little money. People struggle everywhere. Just look at the alarming rate of foreclosures in ATL versus the low foreclosure in DC as an example.
As for traffic, isn’t ATL #3 in terms of bad traffic? Right after DC and NYC. But at least DC and NYC have options. We have a great subway and bus system. How about ATL?
As for the unhappy people, maybe so. The ratio of men to women is off the hook. Women may be unhappy. Men are in bliss.
At the end of the day, does it matter what makes the economy tick as long it is growing fast? Sure the government is the driver of DC’s economy. Last time I checked, dollars spend the same no matter who your employer is. I bet every city in the nation would love to be getting the bulk of the rest of the country’s tax dollars. So keep working, paying taxes so you can contribute to our inflated salaries.

I’m an Atlanta native, but I’ve lived in quite a few other cities, including D.C. Overall, I can say that Atlanta women are the most attractive women outside of perhaps Prague, so long as you stay within the city limits. Va-Hi, Buckhead, EAV, Grant Park, Candler Park and Midtown are filled with very attractive women of all ages, including those with kids. Move out to the burbs, and that’s where you see the fat people wearing sweatpants to eat out. It’s quite dramatic. Now as to the whole D.C. thing, I have honestly got to say that the women of D.C. were the absolute least attractive, most dowdy dressers I have ever seen! I moved up there from Athens, GA. In Athens, I was average. In D.C., I could have been prom queen and was hit on so much it became rather annoying. All of my male friends always wanted to know when I had girlfriends from Atlanta visiting. As far as sophistication…whatever. The town rolls up at 11 pm. And there’s absolutely zero local band scene.

As long as the majority of people in DC don’t have gold teeth, DC will always be head and shoulders above ATL.

Wait a minute there are many country backwards people in DC. Go to Pentagon City Mall, go through Anacostia, go through Temple Hills, MD, go through Southeast,as a matter of fact just ride the METRO and be observant you will see doo rags, droopy pants, baby mamas with three or four kids in tow etc. It rarely snows in the ATL but you can get BLIZZARDS in DC.
