A financial nudge from Uncle Sam
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I hear that big screen TV calling my name.
Democrats and Republicans have reached a tentative agreement to give tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per household.
The move, which includes business tax cuts, is designed to stimulate the sluggish economy.
What will you do with the money? Splurge on a trip overseas, buy a Wii or pay off bills?

As a single adult with no kids, it looks like I’m getting $300. If you can direct me to an overseas trip for that much, I am on it! :-)

On second thought, since the overseas trip is unlikely with $300, maybe I’ll use the rebate to go see a movie at the theater. With $300 I ought to be able to buy a ticket, a drink AND popcorn! Maybe even a LARGE popcorn!

I’ll be damned if I spend it the way the government wants me to. Even if I was already planning to purchase a plasma tv, I wouldn’t do it now, or anytime near when the rebates come out. I would wait and wait and wait! I plan to spend mine in a manner that will NOT benefit our ignorant government one bit! And trust me, it can be done!!

Invest it, save it, bank it. I don’t need anything at this moment, so into the bank it will go. Or cashed and stashed in a drawer for emergencies.
$300 isn’t alot of money these days, but to me, every little bit helps. And adding anything to my savings account always puts a smile on my face.

How can you call it a “Tax Rebate” when it will go to people who don’t pay taxes? Call it what it really is- Welfare.
By Chris
January 24, 2008 12:21 PM | Link to this
I have a bad feeling that most people are going to end up spending more than their rebate checks - putting them in a bigger hole than they are now. This move may help the economy through increased consumer spending, but it’ll increase the amount of consuer debt.
The government should be encouraging people to pay down current debt or God forbid, save some of it. Time is the best weapon for fixing the economy, not some rebate that will have short term positive effects at best.

Obviously, “fall Line” belongs to the Haves Club (haves vs. have nots). With the ever-increasing prices of fuel and food, coupled with the mortgage mess and the stagnant housing market, anyone who doesn’t earn enough to pay taxes needs all the help they can get….from anywhere - call it what you will. Earning less than $30K a year is beginning to be a struggle for my own wallet, but I consider myself one of the lucky ones. At least I have a job.

I don’t get any. Apparently, someone who makes 75k is rich and doesn’t need any. Now - of course that forgets the obvious problem that people with higher incomes pay most of the taxes (the top 1% of earners pay 38% of taxes) while most of these checks will go to people who don’t even pay any taxes. I’ll be spending on luxuries. Like gas for a car and food and healthcare and my mortgage. This is what Bush and the Rethuglicons fail to understand. They have so damaged the economy that people have little to no discretionary income so they finance luxuries on their credit cards or refinance their home. Case in point is my vacation. Due to the increases in airplane fuel costs and the decreased value of the dollar, I couldn’t afford to pay everything out of pocket. So I had to get a 0% credit card and charged all my expenses on it. Now I have to pay off the balance over the next 12 months. This is what Bush and the Rethuglicons have done to the economy. People have to finance their retirement (15%), pay their mortgage (20%), heat and cool their house (12%), put gas in the car (7%), buy food (10%), and go to the doctor (30%). What’s left over? Maybe 10% if your lucky. So what’s a paltry $300 going to do for me? NOTHING!!! And don’t tell me I live too well. That’s a crap argument typical of the Rethuglicon bootlickers. They are so well off they don’t care what it costs to fill up their Hummer or fly 1st class. There before the Grace of God go I’ is their attitude.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the state of the economy is living proof.

What do Republicans have to do with “funding fatcat CEO salaries at the expense of underling layoffs?”
We have severe fundamental problems with our economy that are a direct result of severe fundamental problems with our culture. We have misbehaved financially for so long at the government and individual (see cass @12:33) level that we are WAY past the point of being able to solve it with schemes like this tax rebate. It’s like a person who has smoked for 50 years deciding they want to go to the gym - the damage is done. People who speak of solutions using using the context of Democrat vs. Republican policies just don’t understand the depth of our problem and where we really are as a nation.
Hold on tight. It’s going to be a long, bumpy ride. But we have it coming. Maybe the silver lining is that hard times will cause us to actually go back to living within our means (and demand that government do the same), stop whining about people who make/have more than us, and stop looking to government to solve all our problems despite their awful track record in solving any problem.

Gordon - I agree with you. Individuals, businesses and our government have been living beyond their means for way too long and it’s finally come back to bite them in the a$$.
The mortgage mess is the result of greed and stupidity or naivetee (sp?). Greed on the part of the banks and lending institutions for lending out money to people they know couldn’t afford it, etc.

OK, for everyone who can’t understand why we are giving part of this money to people who do not pay Federal Income Taxes (They do pay SS, Medicare, perhaps state, and most importantly sales tax).
Our economy is driven by consumer spending. When the economy slows down, an incentive is often presented, which is intended to get people to spend. If we give this money to those who are relatively comfortable (even though much of the middle class qualifies), they may spend it or they may not. If we put this money in the hands of the working poor, they will spend it, they have little choice.
Contrary to the popularity of voodoo economics, if the government puts money in the hands of the wealthy, it does NOT trickle down. However, if we put money in the hands of the working poor, it WILL trickle up. They will spend it.
Want to spur job growth? Business do not hire because the government have them a handout. Businesses hire when they cannot meet customer demand. Customer demand = spending.

You are a perfect example of what I was saying, jokester. You see problems in terms of Democrat vs. Republican, and fail to see the larger cultural problem. Do you honestly believe the solution is as simple as electing more Democrats? How I wish you were right. Read GALiberal’s post at 12:46. It is almost a Pavlovian response: I have a problem so what is the government going to do for me? Blaming Bush for people who bought more house than they could afford. Feeling as though he is owed a vacation. Whining about people who are better off financially than he is. That attitude is what ails us, and you and I are both going to have to learn that lesson the hard way.
By the way, I don’t associate myself with either political party. They are both pathetic and neither is up to the task of solving our problems. But that is my whole point, it won’t and can’t be government that does it. Rather it will be a drastic attitude adjustment by millions of Americans (rich and poor) brought on by difficult times which humble us and force us to confront what we have become.

Let’s see. After I pay my bills, I think I’ll put a little away so I can pay the taxes they’ll charge me next year for this generous gift. If there’s any left, I’ll try and help out the economy. Oh wait, we all buy foreign products so I can’t really see how this is helping us. I wonder what fund this is coming out of—-or are we just increasing our debt? What a great idea.

GaLiberal, what does the value of the dollar have to do with vacation unless you’re going overseas? If you did not educate yourself enough to be able to pay cash for a European vacation, perhaps you should just go to Tennessee or North Carolina? Are you saying that people who better prepared themselves to earn more money, not only owe you a vacation, but we owe you one at the destination of your choice?

Typical. Ron Paul talks economic sense and they ridicule him. The other elected clown buy votes with money they don’t have and you cheer them.
The only reason they are giving this money to the poorest people is because in these tough times, anyone with money or intelligence would pay bills or save it for the rainy days to come. The poor will throw it right back into the economy, thus worsening and lengthening ht recession.
Government spending cannot fix an economic crisis. It didn’t work in the 30’s and it won’t work now. Interest rates must be set by the market in accordance with demand and desire for return. People must save and invest.

The “rich” people on here complaining is funny. Do you really think the millionaires out there should get a check for 300 or 600? Do you think that will actually do anything for them. They would not even spend it most likely. How would that help stimulate the economy??

I guess we all know (NOT!!) that no one is poor unless they’ve blown they’re money on booze and lotto………..other than that, there’s no reason on this earth they would be poor? Right?! WTF!!! Official word from CNN. com puts individuals at $600, couples at $1200, non-taxpaying singles at $300 and non-taxpaying couples at $600. I far cry from the $800 single, $1600 couple rebate Bush proposed, but that’s what happens when you have to compromise. Checks won’t start rolling out until June, so we all have plenty of time to contemplate what we’ll buy with our guvermint money.
Bill - While I agree with you in principle, the money we’re getting is being framed as a tax rebate and not a goverment handout. How exactly do you give someone a tax rebate if they don’t pay taxes? That means they get back all the federal tax they paid plus an additional $300-$600. Doesn’t seem very fair does it?

Yes, Tye, you are right in one regard. If life were not about principles, the money would mean absolutely nothing to those of use who can afford (ie, not on CC) to drop a few hundred dollars on a dinner. The problem here is the fact they are taking money out of my pocket and giving it to someone else. I work over 70 hours per week, I worked my way through college over a 9 year period and I do not spend money irresponsibly. I donate a significant amount to causes that I wish to assist. I want control of MY hard earned money.

Honorable Speaker, Today I have heard of the agreement by Democratic and Republican leadership. I am extremely disappointed with the agreement. Do you really think $300.00 dollars will help tax payers form living check to check ? Once again, we Democrats over promise and under deliver! Even President Bush thought more of we citizens than our elected representatives. We have spent a Trillion dollars nation building and you insult us by agreeing to $300.00 dollars. Over the last 7yrs my income has been devastated and through the last couple days, I dared hope someone in congress understood our blight ! You have betrayed us again ! I was going to wait until the end of the election season to determine, if I will stay a Democrat, but this has made the decision for me. I am proud to be an American, but you have assured me, no elected official can be trusted ! As I watch gasoline prices change immediately on weather, or inventories, or the color of the sky, congress does and say nothing. When the prices go down it takes weeks to see it at the pump( How is this even legal ) and you do nothing ! We should be investing in the infra structure of this country and at the same time creating jobs ! But, what did you agree to do, allow tax breaks to companies, who have already had win fall profits the last couple of years ! You should be ashamed to call yourselves Democrats! You have proven once again, that the Republicans who control the purse strings of the is country in partnership with special interest groups and major corporations will keep us in economic slavery. Congress has allowed our best and most sacred parts of our country to be devastated, I don’t see any rich kids in IRAQ, but those whose answer the call to defend this nation ! I see Haliburton/KBR profiting from the war and you do nothing ! Madame speaker, we both are grandparents, is this the nation and inheritance we leave to them ? Shame on you and shame on me !

Apparently, the government is defining rich as earning more than $75k (single) or $150k (married). Just because someone earns over those amounts does not equate them to millionaires who have all this money lying around. If we earn a lot, we probably spend a lot too. Plus, we earn our money working just like you. Don’t fault us for having well-paying jobs. Learn more and earn more. In addition, we pay plenty in taxes - we deserve it more than the people who don’t pay taxes who are receiving a check.

Bart - I agree. Don’t blame GWB, ff you can’t pay your bills, maybe you took on too much debt! If you can’t afford a vacation without running up the charge cards, don’t take one.
People have to start taking responsibility for getting themselves into these financial dire straits. You should know how much you make and therefore how much you can afford. It is really not rocket science. I guess some of these folks skipped that class and went shopping instead.
As for me, if I actually get any money, I’ll probably save it to give back to the government at tax time….

WTF - first of all, everyone in the media and in washington is saying that they are going to give the money to the poor because the middle class will likely save it, not spend it (again class, that’s how we become middle class and not stay poor). So don’t give us any crap. I would love to see all the poor people who WILL be the recipients of this theft (as they always are) save every dime. That would teach the jerks in our government a thing or two.
Secondly, with an attitude like that, we are never going to get our financial freedom back. We functioned as a nation until 1913 without an income tax. If you cut the current amount of income tax collected out of the current budget you would have the budget of 1998. That’s right, only 10 years ago.
Clowns like you are rooted in the problems of this nation and just don’t want to bother to see the light at the end of the tunnel we could all work towards.
Freedom is our right. Our rights have been violated. That is continues under color of law doesn’t make it any less moral or constitutional. There will come a day. You need to decide which side of the conflict you are going to be on.

It’s only $300 for single people if they didn’t file or earned less than $3k….
It may not be “a lot” but take it. I have a child so it money will be appreciated it, needed or not. It’s going into my IRA so when my son is 27 he won’t have to deal with what we deal with now.
From cnn.com (Just for those who may want the section) I read the ajc then cnn and they were different.
Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said the plan would send checks of $600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples who paid income tax and who filed jointly.
People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple.
A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.

Lets see….I’m single with no children. First it was $800. Now it’s only $300….with income limitations I hear. So I just might not get ANYTHING. Besides, $300 is not going to make any difference or assist my financial state in any way, shape or form.
On a better note, I just received my annual salary increase + bonus. I used to treat myself with my bonus (afterall, it’s a bonus for all the hard work I’ve done over the year). However, I will take every single penny of my bonus and throw it in an IRA. Never know when/if things will hit rock bottom and at the rate this country is going…..well….

BOO HOO if you make too much money for a rebate! And calling it “chump change” to boot! That money will mean a lot to me and my children (who are going to school and working and too old for me to claim). They definitely deserve it. I don’t know how these young people can afford gas to get back and forth to their jobs and school, much less rent and other necessities. If you make that much money…then YOU DON”T NEED A REFUND!!!
