A financial nudge from Uncle Sam
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I hear that big screen TV calling my name.
Democrats and Republicans have reached a tentative agreement to give tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per household.
The move, which includes business tax cuts, is designed to stimulate the sluggish economy.
What will you do with the money? Splurge on a trip overseas, buy a Wii or pay off bills?

As a single adult with no kids, it looks like I’m getting $300. If you can direct me to an overseas trip for that much, I am on it! :-)

On second thought, since the overseas trip is unlikely with $300, maybe I’ll use the rebate to go see a movie at the theater. With $300 I ought to be able to buy a ticket, a drink AND popcorn! Maybe even a LARGE popcorn!

I’ll be damned if I spend it the way the government wants me to. Even if I was already planning to purchase a plasma tv, I wouldn’t do it now, or anytime near when the rebates come out. I would wait and wait and wait! I plan to spend mine in a manner that will NOT benefit our ignorant government one bit! And trust me, it can be done!!

Invest it, save it, bank it. I don’t need anything at this moment, so into the bank it will go. Or cashed and stashed in a drawer for emergencies.
$300 isn’t alot of money these days, but to me, every little bit helps. And adding anything to my savings account always puts a smile on my face.

How can you call it a “Tax Rebate” when it will go to people who don’t pay taxes? Call it what it really is- Welfare.
By Chris
January 24, 2008 12:21 PM | Link to this
I have a bad feeling that most people are going to end up spending more than their rebate checks - putting them in a bigger hole than they are now. This move may help the economy through increased consumer spending, but it’ll increase the amount of consuer debt.
The government should be encouraging people to pay down current debt or God forbid, save some of it. Time is the best weapon for fixing the economy, not some rebate that will have short term positive effects at best.

Obviously, “fall Line” belongs to the Haves Club (haves vs. have nots). With the ever-increasing prices of fuel and food, coupled with the mortgage mess and the stagnant housing market, anyone who doesn’t earn enough to pay taxes needs all the help they can get….from anywhere - call it what you will. Earning less than $30K a year is beginning to be a struggle for my own wallet, but I consider myself one of the lucky ones. At least I have a job.

I don’t get any. Apparently, someone who makes 75k is rich and doesn’t need any. Now - of course that forgets the obvious problem that people with higher incomes pay most of the taxes (the top 1% of earners pay 38% of taxes) while most of these checks will go to people who don’t even pay any taxes. I’ll be spending on luxuries. Like gas for a car and food and healthcare and my mortgage. This is what Bush and the Rethuglicons fail to understand. They have so damaged the economy that people have little to no discretionary income so they finance luxuries on their credit cards or refinance their home. Case in point is my vacation. Due to the increases in airplane fuel costs and the decreased value of the dollar, I couldn’t afford to pay everything out of pocket. So I had to get a 0% credit card and charged all my expenses on it. Now I have to pay off the balance over the next 12 months. This is what Bush and the Rethuglicons have done to the economy. People have to finance their retirement (15%), pay their mortgage (20%), heat and cool their house (12%), put gas in the car (7%), buy food (10%), and go to the doctor (30%). What’s left over? Maybe 10% if your lucky. So what’s a paltry $300 going to do for me? NOTHING!!! And don’t tell me I live too well. That’s a crap argument typical of the Rethuglicon bootlickers. They are so well off they don’t care what it costs to fill up their Hummer or fly 1st class. There before the Grace of God go I’ is their attitude.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the state of the economy is living proof.

What do Republicans have to do with “funding fatcat CEO salaries at the expense of underling layoffs?”
We have severe fundamental problems with our economy that are a direct result of severe fundamental problems with our culture. We have misbehaved financially for so long at the government and individual (see cass @12:33) level that we are WAY past the point of being able to solve it with schemes like this tax rebate. It’s like a person who has smoked for 50 years deciding they want to go to the gym - the damage is done. People who speak of solutions using using the context of Democrat vs. Republican policies just don’t understand the depth of our problem and where we really are as a nation.
Hold on tight. It’s going to be a long, bumpy ride. But we have it coming. Maybe the silver lining is that hard times will cause us to actually go back to living within our means (and demand that government do the same), stop whining about people who make/have more than us, and stop looking to government to solve all our problems despite their awful track record in solving any problem.

Gordon - I agree with you. Individuals, businesses and our government have been living beyond their means for way too long and it’s finally come back to bite them in the a$$.
The mortgage mess is the result of greed and stupidity or naivetee (sp?). Greed on the part of the banks and lending institutions for lending out money to people they know couldn’t afford it, etc.

OK, for everyone who can’t understand why we are giving part of this money to people who do not pay Federal Income Taxes (They do pay SS, Medicare, perhaps state, and most importantly sales tax).
Our economy is driven by consumer spending. When the economy slows down, an incentive is often presented, which is intended to get people to spend. If we give this money to those who are relatively comfortable (even though much of the middle class qualifies), they may spend it or they may not. If we put this money in the hands of the working poor, they will spend it, they have little choice.
Contrary to the popularity of voodoo economics, if the government puts money in the hands of the wealthy, it does NOT trickle down. However, if we put money in the hands of the working poor, it WILL trickle up. They will spend it.
Want to spur job growth? Business do not hire because the government have them a handout. Businesses hire when they cannot meet customer demand. Customer demand = spending.

You are a perfect example of what I was saying, jokester. You see problems in terms of Democrat vs. Republican, and fail to see the larger cultural problem. Do you honestly believe the solution is as simple as electing more Democrats? How I wish you were right. Read GALiberal’s post at 12:46. It is almost a Pavlovian response: I have a problem so what is the government going to do for me? Blaming Bush for people who bought more house than they could afford. Feeling as though he is owed a vacation. Whining about people who are better off financially than he is. That attitude is what ails us, and you and I are both going to have to learn that lesson the hard way.
By the way, I don’t associate myself with either political party. They are both pathetic and neither is up to the task of solving our problems. But that is my whole point, it won’t and can’t be government that does it. Rather it will be a drastic attitude adjustment by millions of Americans (rich and poor) brought on by difficult times which humble us and force us to confront what we have become.

Let’s see. After I pay my bills, I think I’ll put a little away so I can pay the taxes they’ll charge me next year for this generous gift. If there’s any left, I’ll try and help out the economy. Oh wait, we all buy foreign products so I can’t really see how this is helping us. I wonder what fund this is coming out of—-or are we just increasing our debt? What a great idea.

If you did not educate yourself enough to be able to pay cash for a European vacation, perhaps you should just go to Tennessee or North Carolina? Are you saying that people who better prepared themselves to earn more money, not only owe you a vacation, but we owe you one at the destination of your choice?

Typical. Ron Paul talks economic sense and they ridicule him. The other elected clown buy votes with money they don’t have and you cheer them.
The only reason they are giving this money to the poorest people is because in these tough times, anyone with money or intelligence would pay bills or save it for the rainy days to come. The poor will throw it right back into the economy, thus worsening and lengthening ht recession.
Government spending cannot fix an economic crisis. It didn’t work in the 30’s and it won’t work now. Interest rates must be set by the market in accordance with demand and desire for return. People must save and invest.

Official word from CNN. com puts individuals at $600, couples at $1200, non-taxpaying singles at $300 and non-taxpaying couples at $600. I far cry from the $800 single, $1600 couple rebate Bush proposed, but that’s what happens when you have to compromise. Checks won’t start rolling out until June, so we all have plenty of time to contemplate what we’ll buy with our guvermint money.
Bill - While I agree with you in principle, the money we’re getting is being framed as a tax rebate and not a goverment handout. How exactly do you give someone a tax rebate if they don’t pay taxes? That means they get back all the federal tax they paid plus an additional $300-$600. Doesn’t seem very fair does it?

Honorable Speaker, Today I have heard of the agreement by Democratic and Republican leadership. I am extremely disappointed with the agreement. Do you really think $300.00 dollars will help tax payers form living check to check ? Once again, we Democrats over promise and under deliver! Even President Bush thought more of we citizens than our elected representatives. We have spent a Trillion dollars nation building and you insult us by agreeing to $300.00 dollars. Over the last 7yrs my income has been devastated and through the last couple days, I dared hope someone in congress understood our blight ! You have betrayed us again ! I was going to wait until the end of the election season to determine, if I will stay a Democrat, but this has made the decision for me. I am proud to be an American, but you have assured me, no elected official can be trusted ! As I watch gasoline prices change immediately on weather, or inventories, or the color of the sky, congress does and say nothing. When the prices go down it takes weeks to see it at the pump( How is this even legal ) and you do nothing ! We should be investing in the infra structure of this country and at the same time creating jobs ! But, what did you agree to do, allow tax breaks to companies, who have already had win fall profits the last couple of years ! You should be ashamed to call yourselves Democrats! You have proven once again, that the Republicans who control the purse strings of the is country in partnership with special interest groups and major corporations will keep us in economic slavery. Congress has allowed our best and most sacred parts of our country to be devastated, I don’t see any rich kids in IRAQ, but those whose answer the call to defend this nation ! I see Haliburton/KBR profiting from the war and you do nothing ! Madame speaker, we both are grandparents, is this the nation and inheritance we leave to them ? Shame on you and shame on me !

Apparently, the government is defining rich as earning more than $75k (single) or $150k (married). Just because someone earns over those amounts does not equate them to millionaires who have all this money lying around. If we earn a lot, we probably spend a lot too. Plus, we earn our money working just like you. Don’t fault us for having well-paying jobs. Learn more and earn more. In addition, we pay plenty in taxes - we deserve it more than the people who don’t pay taxes who are receiving a check.

People have to start taking responsibility for getting themselves into these financial dire straits. You should know how much you make and therefore how much you can afford. It is really not rocket science. I guess some of these folks skipped that class and went shopping instead.

WTF - first of all, everyone in the media and in washington is saying that they are going to give the money to the poor because the middle class will likely save it, not spend it (again class, that’s how we become middle class and not stay poor). So don’t give us any crap. I would love to see all the poor people who WILL be the recipients of this theft (as they always are) save every dime. That would teach the jerks in our government a thing or two.
Secondly, with an attitude like that, we are never going to get our financial freedom back. We functioned as a nation until 1913 without an income tax. If you cut the current amount of income tax collected out of the current budget you would have the budget of 1998. That’s right, only 10 years ago.
Clowns like you are rooted in the problems of this nation and just don’t want to bother to see the light at the end of the tunnel we could all work towards.
Freedom is our right. Our rights have been violated. That is continues under color of law doesn’t make it any less moral or constitutional. There will come a day. You need to decide which side of the conflict you are going to be on.

It may not be “a lot” but take it. I have a child so it money will be appreciated it, needed or not. It’s going into my IRA so when my son is 27 he won’t have to deal with what we deal with now.
From cnn.com (Just for those who may want the section) I read the ajc then cnn and they were different.
Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said the plan would send checks of $600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples who paid income tax and who filed jointly.
People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple.
A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.

BOO HOO if you make too much money for a rebate! And calling it “chump change” to boot! That money will mean a lot to me and my children (who are going to school and working and too old for me to claim). They definitely deserve it. I don’t know how these young people can afford gas to get back and forth to their jobs and school, much less rent and other necessities. If you make that much money…then YOU DON”T NEED A REFUND!!!

To all of those who say persons not getting rebate have no right to complain:
1) The cut-off is $75k. I’m sorry if you’ve been unable to make it to this excessive level of income (!) 2) You act like we, the other taxpayers, OWE you something. I owe you nothing. 3) I have worked hard for everything I have. I don’t take kindly to having it taken from me and given to you.
I was actually leaning toward a Democratic presidential candidate, but this whole situation has pushed me back over into the GOP camp. At least they ACT like they’re not going to play Robin Hood. It’s sickening that government punishes people who do well for themselves.

If you make more than $75K as an individual or $150K as a couple, the “rebate” will be phased out; these amounts are not a “cutoff”, but a phase out point.
The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose income exceeds $75,000 and couples with incomes above $150,000, aides said. Individuals with incomes up to $87,000 and couples up to $174,000 would get partial rebates. The caps are higher for those with children.
Has anybody heard whether they will be using AGI to figure where you stand?

Spend it on getting the Democrats defeated who voted to give money to the welfare recipients who are too lazy to work. That is exactly what is wrong with this country, we have to support the “Arts” those people who went to college to get an education in being an idiot and can’t find anyone to buy the trash they put out as art. Then we have to bail out the welfare croud by “giving” them money they did not earn. Then we have to support the poor (read never had any incentive to get a job) then we get to support those families who had children they could not afford and now have to put them in government day care (read public schools) and while there they are given the opportunity to “share” their educational tools the parents spent money on with those “less fortunate” (read sorry lazy good for nothing good oxygen sucking waste of human flesh people who will not work to get their own kids the materials needed).
The way it should work is if you collect a welfare check, don’t collect this money or any monies that other people worked so hard to earn by using the government to collect it for you.
Don’t get out and vote because we know your one goal will be to get the person elected who will use the power of government to steal more money for you.

Foots, what I meant by “pushing me back toward the GOP” was more of a fundamental realization that I had. I have been so incredibly disappointed by GWB, that I thought the country needed to swing back in the other direction. I was willing to overlook some of the goofball economics that the libs endorse.
But this rebate situation just made a light go off in my head. Income distribution makes me ill, and, like it or not, the libs will do more of it.

HAHAHA, I don’t care how the people feel about their rebate and I am not worried or whining because I am not getting a rebate. The problem I have is that income redistribution is pure socialism and it’s a fundamental flaw in our government that is only going to get worse the longer it goes on and it WILL with absolute certainty cause a major crisis in the future.

I do plan on spending my rebate, even though I will pay taxes on it in 2009, because I understand the economics of the rebate system and how my spending of the money will affect even you jerks that seem to think youre an amazing, intelligent person because you make so much money. The government is stealing our money…income redistribution…socialism. Give me a break. We have been endurin thirty years of income redistribution…from the poor and middle class to the wealthy.
Blaming the current fiscal mess on borrowers is (at least in part) blaming the victims. The root of the problem is deregulation of the financial industry.

You got it all wrong my friend. High income earners are not griping about what we don’t get. We are griping about getting educated, getting and keeping good jobs, working hard and then seeing the government tax us and give it to lazy people like one of my childhood friends who dropped out of high school, makes less than 40K and constantly complains about unfair it is that I live in a nice ehouse, take nice vacations, etc. Well, I worked three jobs at a time while still going to college at the same time. The result was I paid my way to school without a loan or help so I have a right to gripe is I want. So there. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Two Things
This is NOT fair to those of us making over $75,000. I am not a millionaire, but paid well over $20,000 to “W” last year. I get NOTHING from this, although those that have not paid a dime in taxes will see a check.
For those of you receiving checks, especially those with children, realize this: “W” is taking a loan out against future revenues (i.e. the largest deficit in the history of the United States) to send you a check. YOUR CHILDREN will be paying for this in the future…probably double or triple the amount of the check you will receive due to interest paid to China et al.
I think ALL hard working Americans should receive something, regardless of income. Key word - WORKING.

I won’t get a rebate either and I am opposed to giving money to people who don’t pay income tax. I am also opposed to basing the amount on the number of children. It all reminds me of communism: “From those who have to those who need.” Interesting, but we are supposed to be against communism. The money would be better spent on a tax incentive for businesses to buy new equipment —made and for use in this country.

It all starts at your local government, the problem is those of us who work often fail to get out and vote. When you spend all day working and come home tired we assume “others” will get out and cast a vote for us. If all the “working” people will get out and vote and throw some of these dead beat vote pandering Democrats out of office we wouldn’t need a rebate because the Republicans can use their majority to get rid of a lot of these taxes. Every single one of us should be sporting “Fair Tax.org’ stickers on our cars and vote for the one candidate who supports the Fair Tax. You may not like all of a candidates views but there has to be a starting point somewhere and I believe taxes should be that point. The only thing this rebate will turn out to be is another vote buying scheme. Democrats love that because it does nothing negative to their constituents bit does provide them with votes to stay in office. Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama are the two most dangerous terrorists in this country today. Hillary is a socialist and Obama is a muslim in sheeps clothing and ALL muslims advocate the overthrow of America.

Still, $600 isn’t much. I’ll invest it and save for a vacation. Oh wait, this comes in June.
Question: If the Christmas shopping of 4 weeks ago didn’t stimulate the economy (where I know many Americans spent well over $500) then how will this rebate help? Oh, I just thought of something, I’ll spend my rebate on 12 tanks of gas as by then, gas should be around $3.45/gal.

Folks are talking about jobs going overseas and I have to assume they are talking about manufacturing jobs. It is true, large companies gravitate towards countries that have favorable tax codes. If anyone has dealt with Sarbanes-Oxley they know how convoluted ours is and they should realize that it is a major factor in “outsourcing”.
I wonder how manufacturers would feel if we tried a tax system that told them; hey, come back to America and we won’t tax you at all, so long as you don’t provide a good or service at the retail level? It is likely they would come back in droves, bringing their capital and jobs with them.
Unfortunately, there is a tax system that would do that but only cult members support it - it’s called the FairTax. Call me a cult member!

Those other countries pay so much because they are taxed so high, and that tax money is used for real public transportation. The ruin of the country will be the conservatives that move jobs overseas to a commie country that is hell bent on taking over the world financially. Those commie countries do not care about patents, lead, worker safety and our companies that had to move over there were making money before they went over there, it is greed and that is what will bring down our country.

If Exxon makes huge money then great, anyone that gets a dividend or salary should get taxed. I am not getting one. I am retired and I am on a fixed pension. I still continue to work to pay for my two son’s college (22K a year after HOPE)….I make too much for my sons to get federal aid. But we wanted to give them something we didn’t get. My wife and I had two children because that’s all we could afford. We didn’t pump out children because it meant more food stamps. It was called planned parenthood back in our day. Now I read that I am not eligible for the credit because we make too much. It gets better, I have to take a drug test every so often to keep my job and pay the government taxes. I wonder how many of these folks have to take a drug test to get my government tax dollars? This is a crock….fix the economy. How about ship their butts to Iraq for a few months. There is work there and the pay isn’t too bad….oh I forgot, they have 13 kids to take care of and the government is giving them $300 a kid. Ok so this what we need to do. buy a whole bunch of essentials from costco or sams club. stock up on items. Then we all do not spend a penny on anything but bills for the next 8 months. Next year they would be giving us 1,500 - 5,500 bucks. sounds like a plan? who is in this. no but seriously, i am grateful. It is kind of scary to know that the feds are giving us money to spend it. Our economy is pretty much f—-ed up. It is so bad, they are going to give us money to spend…..hum……that is like a drug dealer giving you a pound of weed, a kilo, 2 eightballs, and a keg of moonshine and telling you to go have fun and come back to him for business.

Free money for all. What a great government we have. The only problem is those paying the taxes get none of their taxes back, but the government ensures those who don’t even pay federal taxes get a share. This was one of Stalins first policies and look what that led to. No doubt my taxes will go up again to pay for this free for all to those who don’t work as hard to provide for their families, but why should they when the government can steal the money from me to give to them. Oh, I feel so sorry for those who make over $75,000 and don’t get any money back. They cry - “It’s not fair” like little 5 year olds on the playground.
Exactly WHO told you that life would be fair?
Is if fair that a single parent who gets no child support, has to work two jobs to support her children? NO
Is it fair that not everyone can live in a McMansion? NO
Is if fair that Joe drives a Hummer, while Van drives a Toyota? No
Is it fair that Tom makes $100,000, but Bob only makes $50,000? No
No it isn’t fair. Life isn’t fair, get over it. Grow up, put your big person panties on, and deal with it.
You play the hand you are dealt, and you do the best you can with what you’ve got!!!!
So quite crying, and count your blessings. Be thankful for what you do have. Be thankful that you have a job, period.
Try focusing on what you have, not want others have. Quit trying to “one-up” your neighbors…..

Mary, stop free loading, get a job and pay your way. some people get of their lazy butts and work hard to achieve things in life, obviosly, unlike a freeloader like yourself. You say it yourself, who said life was fair? We can’t all live in McMansions, but those that do, work for that money and didn’t expect a free hand out to from someone else to pay for their needs. May if there weren’t so many free handouts from our leftist government more people would find an incentive to get off their butts and work for a living, maybe that would stop the recession we are already in. either that, or we should all stop working a get the government to provide for all of us, then nobody will need to work.

very true
Is if fair that a single parent who gets no child support, has to work two jobs to support her children? NO
Why should someone else pay for a single parents mistakes?
Is it fair that not everyone can live in a McMansion? NO
Absolutely, you should get out of life what you put in
Is if fair that Joe drives a Hummer, while Van drives a Toyota? No
Yes that’s what they decide to spend their own money on
Is it fair that Tom makes $100,000, but Bob only makes $50,000? No
tom probably put in more effort to get a good job, you know like getting an education
No it isn’t fair. Life isn’t fair, get over it. Grow up, put your big person panties on, and deal with it.
Fairness has never benn delivered to peole by theft and that’s what the government os doing stealing from the productive to provide for the unproductive elements of society
You play the hand you are dealt, and you do the best you can with what you’ve got!!!!
You got that right! Stop expecting the handouts then

It is the people’s responsibility to spend it wisely and not over extend what they have. But by saying you’re not going to spend it because the government wants you too is just ignorant. It’s not the governments complete fault that the economy is falling apart….we the people have played a big part too. we over extend our credit, buy bigger things than our wallets can handle and just make plain stupid financial decisions. Take responisbility for your actions and help put the money BACK into the economy so we can become finacially healthy again. It won’t happen overnight, but this is a good start.

Mary,
You represent the absolute worst of the worst of entitlement thinkers. We’re not complaining life’s not fair. We’re complaining that we paid all the taxes and get NONE back. Why can’t you see this? Would you like to have your house taken away and given to someone that needs it more? There’s absolutely no difference. And, regarding the child support line, you made a bad decision for a husband; not my problem. Your bad decisions caused you to not be able to afford a big house; again not my problem.
I think you and others are the ones who are jealous. I couldn’t care less if you’re getting $600. You hate me because I’ve been successful and don’t need a $600 handout from the government.

Personally, if I get a rebate I am doing the smart thing as in investing it. Every little penny/dollar count.
Big screen t.v, viewing and giving money to naked people and any other materialistic items is not going to benefit me 10 years from here. Also, like to add kudos for those who are going to spend their rebate on catching up on bills, paying off debt and keeping their kids clothe and fed!

Well, considering my husband was just laid off from his job - restructuring to save money - and I’m a Realtor and haven’t had a closing in five months due to the market crisis, I’d say I’ll be putting that money on some of the bills I don’t know how I’m going to pay!!
What bothers me is that after receiving this, next year we’ll receive a 1099 from the government so that we can pay taxes on these refunded taxes!! Where’s the sense in that?
As for all the people getting upset because people who paid no taxes are also getting a refund, think of this: it says people who WORKED and didn’t pay taxes - not people who collected welfare payments. Perfect scenario: my daughter is a fourth year college student - lives on student loans and a part time job. She doesn’t typically pay taxes because she has student status write offs - 1/100th of a write off compared to those in business. She’ll qualify for $300 - which she will dearly appreciate.
And one more note - if the president wants to stimulate the economy, he might want to reconsider us getting the *#ll out of Iraq, instead of meeting up with Iraqi leaders to try and institute a permanent American base there - especially considering he’s spending over 10 Billion Dollars - our tax dollars - there MONTHLY!!! Imagine just one year of that money being pumped back into our economy!

Here’s a concern, if the government can simply print $150 Billion, what does that do to inflation, which is already increasing? If inflation continues to go up, does that mean America becomes less competitive and our currency worthless? (remember we still need to import oil etc). If we become less competitive won’t we lose jobs? If we lose jobs and have inflation, who in the worlds financial markets will trust the dollar? We won’t be able to buy anything from anyone
What we really need is stable money with a true value, otherwise we will all quickly become millionaires, but a million dollars will buy a gallon of milk. That’s not econically sound thinking and benefits nobody. The poor who apparently benefit most from this rebate, even though they don’t pay taxes!! Will be the first to suffer a decline in the value of the dollar.
In reality the stimulus package is to bail out Wall St and the banks, who for year created a housing bubble and are now suffering along with a lot of speculators. The overall economy is still strong and those with jobs and prudent financial standing will benefit from lower prices. government interference in the market will not stop the market doing a correction, but will delay it and eventually make it worse.

I never said I was a freeloader, I never said I was a single parent…..
I was stating that life is not fair.
I am not a freeloader, I have worked at my current job for 16 years. I have owned three homes, that I purchased myself, which I saved the downpayment for. I have absolutely NO DEBT at all, I live within my means.
I get up and go to work every single day. I pay my own way in this world, I don’t rely on anyone but myself. I could care less if the government wants to send me a check or not. If I get one, it will go straight into my savings account anyway, because I don’t owe anybody a damn thing, other than my mortage company. Everything else I have in my possession is paid for with CASH that I went to work and worked very hard for.
Now, how many of you can say that? None, you are all up to your eyeballs in debt that you can’t afford, and now it’s not fair that the government isn’t giving you a handout!!!!!

There is an assumption by some on this board that if you don’t make $150K/yr then you are lazy or uneducated. There are plenty of people who have graduate degrees and work very hard who make significantly less than $75K or $150K. Teachers, for example, make little money for their educational level. So do many people working in a variety of positions. Their choices do not make them stupid or lazy- some people are not driven by money and do not measure success by paycheck alone. The comments by the “rich” on this board however, reflect a dearth of intelligence and compassion despite their paycheck size. To lump teachers or the hard-working middle-class in with lazy people is simply ignorant. Your paycheck may be much larger than mine, but that does not make you a more valuable human being. Try discussing policy without character slandering. It makes you sound more intelligent.

Hey Mary no debt here.
I don’t need the hand out. I just think those that didn’t pay federal taxes should not get tax ‘refunds’ for taxes they didn’t pay. Where as those that paid the federal taxes get nothing for all their efforts.
There are a lot of people regardless of their income that are not rich. The rich do not have incomes, they don’t need to work, John Kerry only pays 8% on his income (good liberal that he is). Most peopele work hard, save for their retirement and get no help, so don’t spout on about those earning $75,000 a year crying, they are not crying about $300, it’s just the insanity of the government excluding tax payers from a refund while refunding taxes those who didn’t pay tax in the first place.
By the way congratulations on not having debt. It’s possibly the only way to survive the financial collapse the government is creating for the future.

We save and invest our money, pay off our debts, don’t indulge (e.g., don’t have a big screen television), chose (and incurred student loans) to be highly educated, etc., yet we CONTINUE to be penalized for striving for a better and responsible (non-government dependent) way of life and living within our means!!!!!

This rebate is a government sponsored cash infusion to the big banks. Average credit card balance is 9000. The government knows that people with brains will pay down their balances, ergo huge cash to banks and like the earlier poster said, we will get taxed on it next year and the government gets more. If you make over the limit, remember how it was before you made good money? That is if your names not Buffy or Biff. Don’t be so greedy.

Apologies for my venting in my 10:20am posting above, which I’ll continue. Approximately 30% of our income goes to taxes. This includes taxes for the public school system, yet by our choosing to live inside the loop to avoid the commute issue we then have to pay for private school for our children because of the poor quality and corruption of the ATL public school system — i.e., everything is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Overall, I continue to be frustrated by the abuse, generational dependency, and expectation that the government will take care you and lack of self esteem and desire to contribute productively to society, rather than be a burden to society, by certain segments of our society!!! I digress, so back to my main point —- let all of those who pay taxes (and only those who pay taxes) be eligible for the tax rebate.

I wish the government would not send the money to us. First of all, the government does not have the money and will borrow it. Secondly, it will probably end up borrowing the money from China. Third, if we do borrow the money from China, the government will have to pay interest and principal back to China and U.S. citizens will probably end up buying Chinese products with the borrowed money.
That means China will end up with their money and with a note for that money too. The government will be deeper in debt. Anything bought with the money, by taxpayers, will only brighten our lives for a few hours.
Strange things happen during election years. There isn’t any way this economic package would be flying through Congress if an election was not in front of us.
Our political leaders are buying votes.
Will I spend the money? No, I’ll save it for the day taxes have to go up to pay for all this foolishness.

Since my wife and I work and make more than $150k we won’t get any of this giveaway booty. Oh yeah, we also can’t participate in a pre-tax IRA, can’t take deductions for our children’s college tuition payments or write off my home equity line of credit interest.
I guess I should just be glad that I have worked hard to become successful so that I can have my pay garnished to give to those who have yet to realize the american dream like my “in debt up to my eyeballs a##” is.
Good luck America. When you run out of “rich” working folks to tax who will turn out the lights on the socialists dream of a country?
Hillary?

Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this. What we should be discussing is why the gov’t is giving us peanuts when they are spending 700mill to build an embassy in Iraq just to have someone blow it up. I couldnt understand how our govt gets away with things like sending billions overseas to other countries and building lavish 700mill compounds in foreign countries but after reading these posts it is apparent that the majority of people in this country are complete morons so why shouldnt the govt bend you over and screw you? If the govt really wanted to make a difference in the economy give every 12k and not 12 hundred. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS PEOPLE THEY DO NOT WANT A MIDDLE CLASS THEY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR SORRY A* THERE WILL BE A LOWER AND AN UPPER CLASS THATS IT THEY ARE JUST DOING ENOUGH TO SHUT YOUR DUMB A*ES UP LONG ENOUGH TO IMPLEMENT THEIR PLAN AND YES I AM TALKING ABOUT DEMS AND REPUBLICANS. THERE ARE NO PARTY LINES ALL POLITICIANS ARE CRIMINALS.

I’m going to help the economy by giving it to Democratic candidates for Congress. The GOP is responsible for this failing economy, the screw-up in Iraq, and the mess our healthcare system is in. Screw ‘em!

Heck no…..because I am one of the lucky ones who makes more than 75,000. And we do not get any money back. Only the ones that did not pay get money back. The poor can take a hike!

(1)This is the largest gathering of simpletons I have ever witnessed. Especially the people who claim to earn $150k. Who pays you $150k, and you can’t spell? Where do I sign up? (2)Have any of you ever been to a third world country, where you have to step over crippled beggars in the street, where homeless children wander and paraplegics drag themselves around in the dirt? The rich few don’t care about the poor in those countries and that’s where we are headed. You’re nothing but a bunch of animals and/or fools to begrudge a gift to the poor in our country. Yes, the Republicans and their corporate sponsors did this to the country by giving tax breaks to corporations, who in turn stuffed the pockets of the executive teams, while downsizing the staff and leaving their pay stagnant. That money was supposed to go to the middle class to stimulate the economy. Fools, wake up. You may think $150k is enough now but you are sifting down the chain into the classification of “poor” every day along with everyone else.
