The Wire: Never make it personal

Omar dead?

C’mon, not before he takes out Marlo, Chris and Snoop.

I watched this episode early. The first time, I cried and went through the next couple of days in a daze. Omar, the gay, stick-up artist, was the gangster who robbed drug dealers, didn’t cuss and took Sundays off. He was the one who stood up to Stringer, Avon Barksdale, Prop Joe and Marlo.

He also provided the HBO series with some of its best scenes.

What were the writers thinking?

I suspect there’s some larger cosmic answer to all of this, but did they have to write Omar out like that?

Sure, there are consequences of being in “the game”… blah, blah, blah.

We also knew it was a possibility Omar wouldn’t make it to the final episode, but we wanted him to go out in a blaze of gunfire taking Marlo, Snoop or Chris with him. But Omar (not limping, btw) killed by Kenard, the baby sociopath, while he’s buying a pack of smokes?

To paraphrase Clay Davis - that’s some “shameful s*.”

Bunk was the only one who seemed shocked by Omar’s death. Well, Bunk, Chris and Snoop. Marlo tells them Omar is bagged and that a hopper did it.

“Ain’t heard a name,” Marlo says. “Don’t even know if there was a why.”

And Omar didn’t even warrant a mention in the Sun. Editors decided to go with news of a fire. I guess the message here is that in the end, no matter how bad you are in life, you don’t really matter.

And can anybody explain the final scene in the morgue? We also caught a slight snafu with the tag mix up. Can you guess what the writers overlooked?

The serial killer storyline has worn me down. I’m glad though that McNulty was able to speed up the lab work and help Bunk make a case against Chris. Funny how the FBI profiler’s description of the phantom serial killer fit McNulty perfectly.

Things are also unraveling at the Sun. Gus finally challenges Templeton’s “perfect” quotes and sources. You would think Templeton would pull up a bit, but I guess the lies are getting easier to tell.

Since there are only two more episodes left, I wanted to give a shout out to an actor you don’t hear a lot about, but who is superb. Reg E. Cathey, who plays the savvy mayoral lieutenant, Norman Wilson. On more than a couple of occasions, Norm has saved his boss from political missteps and is always quick with the verbal zingers.

Here are two of my favorite Omar scenes.

I am disappointed. I at least wanted Omar to whack Chris and Snoop.

Shocked. That’s the best word to describe how I felt after Omar was killed. I had a funny feeling after I saw Kenard look up once Omar passed him and when Omar glanced at the door in the convenience store. I guess I expected Omar to at least take down someone in Marlo’s crew. It did seem like a cheap way to take out one of the show’s biggest stars. This was even more shocking than Bodie’s demise…

Definitely shocked that Omar was taken out like that, but that is why this is the best show on TV. It’s real. I always wondered how he could be walking around that way all over town with no one from Marlo’s side trying to step to him. Stilldefiant, i totally agree with your Bodie opinion.

That’s messed up. An eight year old came in and did what Avon, Stringer, Marlo, Chris, and Snoop couldn’t do. But I do agree with Sheila, Omar should have went out in a blaze of gunfire and smoke. Hopefully, the last episodes will be better than last night.

I was so shocked to see my boy (Omar) go out like that. I was for sure he was going to go out in a blaze of glory. (like you said). I have watch this show from the beginning, and it never fails. SHOCK!!!! These writers should get some kind of award for their efforts. This time they really out did themselves. What about the Senator, he actually thinks he’s got off. He got another thing coming. Michael is going to take out Snoop. He is tired of her not reasoning. Check this out. They got mad skills in the streets, but Duck needs to go back to school. This is going to be the most missed show on national television. Thank You for the ride.

Even little big mouth bad a@#$@ like Kennard can get at the Man. You never know who will be the 1 to take you out. I see that McNulty is unraveling. What a great show.

NO MORE OMAR To paraphrase Clay Davis - that’s some “ s*.”

I think the writers got it wrong We dont want Marlo arrested (if thats the way it will play out” we wanted Omar to take him out!! I lost interest when the bullet went thru Omars head. My wife walked out not caring anymore. Oh well 2 more episodes and no more reason to watch HBO

OK, did anyone catch the goof at the end? Notice the date of birth on the ID tag. It said 1960. That makes Omar older than 34. It would make him 48!

I personally like how they did away w/Omar. In real life another Omar will be born today and probably 2 or 3 of them will be killed. When you are feared like that in the streets, you become EVERYONE’S nightmare.

The scene when they read the profile to McNulty was classic. I’m extremely concerned about Kema though. I hope she doesn’t uncover them.

Did anyone see Jim Jones standing on the corner when Bunk came out of the store? I bet he begged for a part in the Wire…lol Hip hop artist love this show!!!

Did anyone see the comcast remote Carcetti had. Shameless plug!!!

I think the “goof” at the end was the writers giving us fans who dearly loved Omar another look to say goodbye. The tags were wrong by the date and ethnicity. It was as innocent as switching tags but I took it as the final goodbye. RIP OMAR

Did anyone notice another goof? Omar was limping bad right before he walked in the store, but once he entered the store he was walking perfectly with no limp.

I saw Jim Jones.

I can’t wait to watch the next episode tonight on ON DEMAND.

Omar’s death shows that life is just a vicious circle. Omar got offed by a future Marlo…..

The Baltimore Sun reporters love to chase awards and kudos like many of today’s journalists.

Carcetti’s backroom deals are the real deal. It’s how Maryland’s current governor got in office and Carcetti is based on him…..he got the black vote in Prince George’s County that way…

Clay Davis is back in the game…for now.

McNulty’s dilemma is real. Cops are doing whatever to get funds to fight epidemic crime in B’More…

The Wire is the best thing on tv…PERIOD!

Yeah Sheila(Sheels), I saw this episode early last week too & the way Omar was walking around I had a funny feeling. It happened so fast, but @ least it wasn’t Chris/Snoop/Omar that killed him. And from the previews of this week’s episode it looks like someone else gets theirs. I still don’t understand what you get out of leaving the gun @ the scene? That was explained in the first “Godfather” but I still don’t get it. I didn’t get the last scene either & I was going to ask you about that? Maybe it was what “Real Fan” said & nothing more to it than that! I also thought something was going to happen to Leander(the cop) when he was at the stop sign in between chasing Marlo’s crew.

Although I was surprised that Omar got ‘whacked’ reminds me of another HBO show, its shows that this by far is some of the best writing out there. I really didn’t care for season 4 with the kids storyline line however last night’s episode really pulled everything together. The way they brought little Kenard minor character into this storyline showed that the systemic mindset of street. One can only imagine that Kenard probably wet his pants after he shot Omar but it was his initiation to becoming another Marlo or Avon. Bunny was right you have to get these hoppers early.

If police have the gun they can’t get warrants and shake down people looking for the gun. Plus it wont be found later on someone who will tell the police all kinds of info to save their own butt from a life sentence.

I was in total shock when Omar got killed.

I saw it last Monday & couldn’t bring myself to watch again last night & see Omar die. He is my fave on the Wire, but I kinda saw it coming when Kenard was the only kid to not run away when Omar limped thru the alley. Never liked that kid.

I think that list of names/addresses Omar left behind just may help the cops make some busts of Marlo’s spots.

I wanna see Chris go to jail along w/Marlo. Marlo’s a punk & I don’t think he can handle a bid.

Michael may take out Snoop & I’m wondering if Kenard will go to jail since he dropped the gun & had no gloves on, his prints were all over it. Bunk & Omar were cool so I think he’ll try to find his killer or at least I hope so, please don’t let Omar die in vain!

I lost interest when Omar got shot as well, I’m actually glad there are only 2 episodes left & never thought I’d say that! this is a great show tho, definitely the most underrated show on HBO.

If you watch the pre-quels, you’ld notice that Omar was about Kenards age when he got in the game, although he didn’t kill the man (non-combatant) on the bench, he would have blasted his friend if he didn’t give the money back. Just goes to show you, no matter how much you are feared in the game, someone else will be coming for you and in the imortal words of Omar Little, “If you come at the King, you best not miss”…R.I.P. Yeah, it was a shock that Omar went out the way he did. But you have to admit that it was absolutely brilliant of the writers to use a kid to do it. The reason Avon, Stringer, Marlo and his crew couldn’t take Omar down is because he always saw them coming. It was only fitting that a so-called “kid” would take him out. Omar saw all children (even those in the game) as no real threat to him. Children and senior citizens were sacred to him. Omar was eliminated by someone whom he would never raise a gun to or suspect would raise a gun to him. Quite ironic…don’t you think. And brilliant. That is what’s so special about THE WIRE…not cliche but absolutely unpredictable!!!

David Simon deserves so much credit, the killing of Omar is what makes the show so great, everybody is in play and “the game is the game”, as all of the major players in this odessy have spoken to. As the last two episodes play out i cant even imagine another show being scripted as great as this one, besides watching the seasons over and over what is a Wire junkie to do. Thanks to all of the bloggers and especially you Sheila for bringing this forum for us to get together, we’re gonna need one another to make it through in these next 2 weeks. I actually screamed when Omar got it— My wife came running in the room and I woke up the kids—

It was so surprising. At first I did not like it. I like all wanted a showdown with Marlo—

But the more I thought about it— it matches the poetry of this show and the poetry of life—

You just never know what will happen to you at any moment death can caress you.

Well… to say this episode was “shocking” is an understatement! I was expecting a showdown b’tween Omar,Chris, and Snoop, then a one on one with Omar and Marlow. I have no clue what to expect now. I was like whoa! do I even want to watch the last show now? Once Omar walked in the store, I got a feeling like something was about to go down, but I was not expecting him to get popped like that. WOW! What’s left for the next episode?

I really liked ” lwyrgrl ” comments.

It seems that we have forgot Marlos BIGGER problem. The law is the last thing he has to worry about. Now that Dexter is on to how they meet. When the greeks get wind of police in there business they will have a special kind of justice for Marlo. They strictly told him that they don’t want to see no one but him! Don’t forget the greeks already had a leak in the FBI from the season about the Docs. Come on WIRE fans…stand up!!!

Did anyone notice that the young boy that took Omar out was one of the young men who were trying to burn up the cat? He was also the only one that did not run when the others saw Omar coming. The point I’m trying to make is that many serial killers, murders, etc. begin by killing animals before moving up to human prey. Omar going out like that? Does it call for a day of mourning or what?

I apologize if someone else has already posted this, but I don’t like to read blog posts b/c someone always puts in a spoiler.

I know the snafu you are referring to. Omar is said to be 34 years old, yet his DOB says 1960.

I think the scene, just like the newspaper, shows that Omar was just a dead guy with no particular relevance. Even HE could get mixed up in the shuffle. Though a legend in the streets, almost meaningless elsewhere.

By WIlliam

February 25, 2008 11:15 AM | Link to this

I was also sad to see Omar get got. I was a little puzzled by the last scene, and I will have to go back and watch it again. it may be that Omar “lives on” only as a story on the streets. If Marlo’s guys try to get a visual on Omar’s body, at the morgue, he mysteriously wont be able to be found, and the body in the bag is not his…. They will crap their pants thinking he may still be out there.
I am glad Gus is finally calling Templeton out. I Hope McNulty doesnt implode over his guilt. He is flawed for sure, but his heart is in the right place. he just does not see the bigger picture. Cant wait for next two episodes. I hope they release it on DVD soon after it finishes. I’ll be first in line.
As with some other posters here, I agree this has to be the best show on tv. Why has it not been recognized at all? is it too violent? It may be better than the sopranos, but none of the recognition that SOpranos got.

I kinda expected Omar to get it but not like that. I’m not having a good day. Did anyone notice the kids that ran when Omar walked through the alley? The one that didn’t run was the one that killed him. Did anyone notice what they were doing? They were pouring gasoline on a cat to kill it. A lot of killers, (serial, mass and otherwise) start by killing animals before “graduating” to humans. I may be putting too much into it but I thought that it was a stoke of genius.

By Luvnit

I was shocked and hurt that Omar went out like that. What I found interesting was the fact that the kids in the alley were trying to kill a cat by pouring gas on it and burning it. The only one not to run is the one that ended up killing Omar. It’s a known fact that may serial and other murders got their start by starting fires and killing animals. Maybe I’m making too much of it but I found it a stroke of genius.

The WIRE deals w/raw inner city life. I don’t think peoples concern has gone past just reviews. The same thing is happening right now in Clayton Co schools, the inner city and Atlanta’s housing projects. To give attention to this show would be to give attention to issues that have for too long been avoided. As w/the Sapranos, the mafia is a whole other world to the majority of us but the Wire is a gut check for our nation!!!

I think Chris and Snoop made a mistake by not telling Marlo that Omar was calling him out as a punk in the street. Without Omar, they are still going down. I just can’t wait to see their demise. Clearly, if you’re blogging out loud about “the boy who burned the cat being the same boy who killed Omar”, you’ve missed Kenard’s reoccuring roles throughout the show, and one of the most critical messages of the show’s entirety - life goes on, and someone is always willing and able to replace you. Kenard’s character represents the future of the streets - he is the Omar/Marlo/Stringer we may never know, but future generations will… Genious of them to use a child to snuff out Omar. Ultimately, Omar’s cockiness and his own moral code were his downfall. He believed in his own immortality and he failed to see the fatal potential in a child.

Truly a sign of wonderful, creative, and unpredictable writing; I loved every show! You have us all mourning the death of the gay, stick-up artist, who robbed gangsters and drug dealers. I keep telling myself that these are only actors! Stop tripping!!!!

After last night, I have GREAT expectations for the remaining episodes.

How refreshing it is that David Simon and his team have brought us a show that does not insult our intelligence. So many shows would have us believe that every story will have a happy ending, that the good guys will win by the end of the hour, and that our heroes will always go out in a blaze of glory. Life is not like that, and neither is The Wire.

It’s often very hard to tell just who truly are the good guys and the bad guys, since everyone is flawed. And just when you see good things begin to happen and justice about to prevail - BANG - a shot to the back of the head changes things in an instant. Brilliant.

Never before has a television show left me so emotionally drained episode after episode. Life can be really tragic sometimes, and this show captures that over and over. I feel the despair and sense of hopelessness that must consume those living in and around “the game.” And the saddest part of it all is knowing that in a few weeks I won’t be able to slip into their world anymore.

RIP Omar. RIP The Wire. :(

I’m just finding this blog, but better late than never. To understand Kennard killing Omar, you have to see the previous episode. When Omar ran up on Michael, Kennard said, that’s Omar? He’s a GIMP. Like he ain’t nobody to be scared of. Sad to say, but Kennard was the perfect person to kill Omar. He one of those just don’t care kids. This show is just to real, and it will definitely be missed in 2 weeks. I think the writers we trying to say no matter how big and bad you were on the streets in the big picture he was nobody. from not being put in the paper to being mixed up in the morgue. I’m really thinking of cancelling HBO after this, they can’t come any better than this!!!

Just reading everyone’s posts, and I find it intresting that we all feel the same way about Omar’s death. Watching it go down effected me in a strange way. I couldnt stop thinking about it for days!( I saw it last week by the way) I started getting upset with myself and had to be reminded that it just a show. I guess because these actors are doing a D*MN good job at portraying these characters and not to forget the writing is awesome, that it seems so real. I had the same reaction as some of you, not wanting to watch it anymore, that was short lived when I saw the previews for the next episode. CG, its funny, I felt the same way about the cope (Leander) get shot or something. I closed my eye because it just felt like something was going to happen at that point. I’m glad it didnt! You guys should read that blog that HBO has for the wire. Go to the thread where it talks about what you think the ending is going to be. You should read what some of the viewers think is going to be the last episode. I found it intresting that someone made a point about the prequals ( i know its that is not the correct spelling)that each person feature has been killed off. ie. prop joe and now omar. To my understanding there is one on BUNK and McNaulty. I may be wrong but someone seems to think he’s going to commit suicide. Intresting!! What do you guys think?

Gosh, this is a great show! I kinda stumble on the ending last week and didn’t want to believe it. However, I still looked at the tube with my mouth wide open for a few seconds in shock! No blaze of glory, no quick Omar sayings YO’…..just another brother dead in a store trying to get some smokes. I guess all it really meant was “live by the sword die by the sword”. Even if he was a modern day robinhood, we shouldn’t forget that only god gives life and no man has the right take it. With that being said damn, I’m gonna miss Omar! The only gangster your mama would say was good people! (Look out yall I see Mike taking Omar’s place)! Just somthin’ 2 think on! The Wire isn’t dead just like life it just continues in another form.

I felt like Omar was about to die, but it was a shock to see who ended up killing him. I’m glad that it wasn’t Marlo, Snoop or Chris that did it. I know a lot of people are upset, I am to, about Omar dying, but that is how it is in the streets. You always have to be on guard and it’s always the person you least expect that will be the one who gets close enough.
One thing about The Wire, it keeps you guessing and on your toes!!! I like the fact that they take no prisoners, no one is safe on The Wire. I’m really going to hate it see it end. Can’t wait for the last two episodes, although I feel as though it will seem too rushed, especially since it seems like there are so many things that need closure.

We all liked Omar because as ruthless as he could be, he still had principles. We wanted him to get scheming azz Marlo and his crew. The show is real because very few cats go out in a blaze of glory. Omar just caught slipping. He heard the door open, he looked at the kid, he figured it was no threat (just a little kid) and turned back to the cashier…BOOM! It was all over. “Live by the Sword, Die by the Sword”

Kenard could evolve into the next Omar. He’s already in the streets, he just killed the baddest mofo walking, he stalked Omar just like a predator and besides Kenard’s a sociopath — did you not see him attempting to burn a cat with the other little kids. He hangs out with killers & gangsters one minute but he sneaks off to host cat burning sessions for the little kids.

In the end, Avon will be back on top. Slim Charles, his proxy is waiting. Slim never sided with Marlo. Marlo’s going down, Prop Joe is dead and there is a power vacuum in the Co-Op. Avon is in jail on probabtion violations, he will be out soon enough and he’s protecting the Russian in jail which will help him get the connect to the Greeks, Marlo already gave his sister $250K — just so Avon would let him talk to the Russian, Avon still has the NY connect (that’s how he knew Bro. Mouzzone) and he will still have WeeBay on the inside to keep the game sewn up in the prison system. There will always be corner boys being recycled to work for the cats with the big paper.

It has to be the Po-lice that gets Marlo. The show is called “The Wire.” It has to be via that method that carries it through. Not only the street criminals, but the politicians (Clay Davis), and the newspapers. The posting emphasis on Sheila’s blog is on the street side, but always remember, this is McNulty’s show. He is the central character. Everything significant is channeled through him. Also, remember when Freamon found documents linking Davis to Stringer and the developers. Not good for Clay. That’s what he plopped down on Clay at the bar.

Michael K. Williams. He took a 7 episode commitment and created one of the finest characterizations in television history. The depth and shadings of his character Omar (tuned by his very attentive writers) are virtually unparalleled in television. We have all witnessed some of the finest work that has ever been produced. My hat is off to Michael and speaking for “all” of “us,” we look forward to enjoying many more years of his genius.

don’t bet on it, Anthony! at the rate they’re goin, Michael and Kenard might be meeting with The Greek next! LOL

honestly, there are SO many loose ends that must be tied up in the next two eps.

who’s leaking grand jury info to the street? (i think it’s “madam council chair”)

does the press get a hold of Rawls’ “undercover lover” night life?

does Lester end up in bracelets before Clay?

will McNulty live long enough to get locked up? (i think he’s gonna take himself out)

does Michael snap the f^&k out on Snoop and Chris, sending Marlo to prison alone?

does Avon get his revenge on Marlo in prison?

does Randy end up on the street and hook with Cheese?

DAYUM…i sure wish we could’ve gotten the full 13 episodes, instead of 10!!!

The show is trying to be real, not trying to keep around popular characters and kill off unpopular characters. In real life a gay stick-up man wouldn’t have lasted that many years without someone getting him. Come on now. Omar was a great character but his death has been long overdue.

Pain, thats all I can say. Prop Joe and now Omar. I have been watching the Wire from the beginning and by Far it is the BEST Dayum Show HBO has put on. I begged my son to tell me who got wacked(on demand) and when he told me man I could not beleive The Mighty Omar got took out by a KID. Lets hope the writers get smart and come up with another season because Avon is still around you no, and will be getting out of prison. Omar Little R.I.P. and the ^&%^4 with the rest(snoop, marlo and chris)

Good idea Shelia. I’d love to meet up with other “wire heads.” I promise i won’t talk through the finale.

Wonder why the writers had Omar walk into the store without a limp. It was like his final walk of the show. He had to make a statement. Can you ask the actor who plays Omar about that.

I wonder what will happen to Daniels and his woman? And Dukie, I love that kid. Michael too.

Shocked… yes indeed! I DVR’d the episode and watched it y’day while playing hooky from wk. I’m laying on the couch, enjoying the show and here come that little hoodlum with a gun he can barely hold shooting Omar. Man, I jumped up so quick… couldn’t relax after that moment. Although I thought there would be more to Omar finally gettin’ his, it was classic The Wire! Unexpected, and so darn real. You just never know.

With only 2 episodes left, not much can happen… I figure Chris goes down, Michael shoots Snoop, McNulty gets caught, and of course Templeton gets in trouble for all them stupid azz lies!

I was not happy with the way they took Omar out… at first. But after reading the comments everybody made, it makes perfect sense. For him to be killed any other way would have been contrived.

Thank goodness for this blog. I can’t wait for the last two episodes.
Thanks for the insight folks!

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT ALL OF YOU, BUT I’M ON MY WAY TO THE MALL TO GET MY CLASSIC “RIP OMAR” SHIRT WITH HIS PICTURE ON IT! I AM REALLY, REALLY, REALLY IN MOURNING. OMAR WAS “MY MAN” YEAH, YEAH I KNOW…HE PLAYED FOR THE OTHER TEAM, BUT REGARDLESS OF THAT, HE KNEW WHERE HOME WAS, HE JUST NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET THERE. SO REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU ALL SAY, HE WAS “MY MAN”.AND “I LOVE HIM” ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL. DAYUM, DAYUM , DAYUM…FOR ALL YOU “GOODTIMES” FANS! FEEL FREE TO SEND YOUR CONDOLOENCES TO ME AND MY FAMILY FOR THE LOSS OF “MY MAN” OMAR, WE GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

Damn!!! Omar got it from Kennard…I really saw this coming, even if some fool at the HBO site told this a few weeks ago, I said…NO!! Omar was my favorite charecter on the show and he will be missed!!!Kenard was “stalking” Omar since the last episode….This goes to show the realism of the show…The streets take no names and are unforgiving! This was really as bad as Stringer Bell getting waxed. I thought the show would suffer after that, but…the GAME continued, lol.. as Kenard will someday take over his own corners and become the “next” Marlo….2 episodes left, I predict Micheal will kill Snoop, Chris and Marlo get busted…..Damn this was the best show on Television!!!! Hands Down!!There are so many small things in the show that you have to watch for, so much cause/effect…like Randy after getting labeled a “snitch” and abused by others,is now a ruthless kid in foster care after starting out as a harmless, good kid….This show will be sorely missed! I also suggest that fans of the Wire if you want to watch something “gangsta” and off the chain, but a little out of the box….rent HBO`s Rome….after 2 episodes you will watch all 3 seasons…straight cut throat as the Wire, lol….

I wish Omar would have lasted to the end of the season too. However, the Wire is based on a true story and Omar got killed in real life just the way it was potrayed in the movie.

I have a theory about Marlo, but dont want to say too much..I have already seen the next episode so I dont want to spoil it for anyone…however…Is it just me or does anyone else thinks Marlo is actually GAY? He’s a real hothead anytime someone calls him a punk. That one word will incite more fury than anything…Keep your eyes open for that….

Look for Michael to come out on top…

As everyone else said.. this is THE BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION…period. Way better than the Sopranos…And I like Rome also…that was a mad crazy show also…

The manner in which the writers wrote Omar was truly some shameful sh*t. Omar, like Clay Davis carried the water for the team. He was the main reason many watch the Wired each and every week.

HBO has one week and one week only as the premium channel in my cable package.

The only thing shameful is how some of you are whining about Omar dying instead of going out in a blaze of glory, blah, blah, blah. What show have you folks been watching all these years because “The Wire” doesn’t give you predictable cops & robbers shootouts? Death is often quick, messy, disorganized, unexpected and unglamorous. Hmm. Just like in real life.

This wasn’t “The Omar” show; its “The Wire”. If you were watching all along just for Omar then you wasted your time and never got anything meaningful out of the show. Omar HAD to go down. He left paradise and happy retirement to get revenge, just as Marlo had intended. He broke his promise to Bunk. He started cursing and killing unnecessary. He was a broken man at the end of his rope. And thanks to the brilliant David Simon who foreshadowed Omar’s death at the hands of Kenard as far back as season three (check out some other blogs on the web to find out what I’m talking about), Omar became another tragic figure in this modern day Greek tragedy. And he died not getting the revenge he hoped for which meant the viewers didn’t get what they wanted either. But again that’s life and this show stays more true to reality than any other show. This ain’t “The Shield” for God’s sake. Should Simon and Co have repeated themselves by allowing Omar to take out Marlo like he did Stringer? Wouldn’t that simply be a repeat of what had come before? That alone should have told you folks that Omar was not going to get his way this time.

And the scene in the morgue as well as the scene in which Gus choses not to make mention of Omar’s death in that store was a way of pointing out that while Omar was a legend on the street in the larger world of Baltimore he was an unknown, a nobody. Just another bullet-ridden black male corpse. He was no Superman or Spiderman. He was just a man whose time ran out. He was so obscure that sloppy morgue attendants even got his tags wrong until one dude in the end spotted the error and made the correction. Fade to black.

yo Regi, I agree with you. I have not seen the next episode, but I have also had the theory that Marlo is gay. he protests too much. Thanks for commenting Laverne, but please, no spoilers. Some people do not have On Demand or want to watch the show at its scheduled time.

Good points Accidental Visitor & thanks for joining. Still, some of us just loved Omar. The show has several very strong and popular characters and many interesting storylines. That’s what makes it a superb show! Also, please let us know the foreshadowing on Kenard killing Omar. That’s interesting. I’d like to know as well. thanks.

On another note, I hear Felicia ‘Snoop” Pearson and Andre “Bubbles” Royo will be in Atlanta at the Verve Lounge on Friday.

The foreshadowing:

During the season 3 shootout between Omar and his gang and the Barksdale crew at the stash house…..Bunk vists the residence after all the dust had settled. He sees the dead female who was part of Omar’s gang, and then he turns to look at a bunch of kids, at the crime scene, who are pretending to shoot weapons. One of the kids yells “its my turn to be Omar” and that disgusts Bunk , as he would later tell Omar himself. He didn’t want to see children in the community pretending to be hoodlums, gangstas and drug dealers.

Well the kid who actually shouted that he wanted to play the role of Omar was Kenard. Seriously. Same actor. David Simon confirmed this to Alan Sepinwall who writes a blog about many shows on the net (called “What Alan’s Watching”). Sepinwall may have been the first to bring up this revelation and Simon congratulated him for figuring it out.

So Simon had basically been plotting this arc all along. At that time we had no idea who this kid was (wouldn’t get a name until the 4th season) but its been part of Simon’s big plan. There is a YouTube link to this scene up and running now for those who need a refresher.

Mayeb I was the only person who noticed this, or maybe my mind was playing tricks on me…..but when Sydnor was stopped in the car lookin at the map, did the steps and the area outside of the driver side window not look familiar…..to me it looked like Chris Partlow’s crib (from when Chris and Marlow went to Chris’ house so that he could tell the family goodbye). That really added to the scene for me at the time, as I seriously though he was going to get popped.

Thoughts???

Accidental Visitor, your comments are very insightful and condescending at the same time. Everyone on this blog is well aware of the depth of characters and plot. At the same time, however, some characters are more popular than others and for different reasons. I am one of the people who really liked Omar. No apologies. And, yes, I was blown away at his death and the manner of it. But thanks for the refresher.

I’ll trade a little condescension for Accidental Visitor’s insight any day. (lord knows I’m guilty of that too)

I only picked up The Wire last season, and Kenard was one of the more frightening characters - because of how young & small he was. EASILY the most profane & street-hardened kid we saw, WELL beyond the likes of Randy / Dukie / Michael / Namond.

To hear about the Season 3 connection now only makes my appreciation of Simon (something of a blowhard himself, genius notwithstanding) even more…

By AccidentalVisitor

All THAT, it doesn’t matter if you think I have a condescending tone. My point stands. I have been watching this show from the very beginning as well as visiting forums dedicated to it (back when there were hardly any). From day one there were folks putting their favorite character ahead of the actual show, sometimes to a point of only caring about the scenes that involved those particular favorite characters of theirs. Heck, I’m still reading stuff by people who say they FF the stuff with Bubbles or Carcetti or the newspeople because they don’t find them interesting. My counter is that this show shouldn’t be treated like “Lost” or “Desperate Housewives” for which fans divide themselves into different groups or fanclubs dedicated to their favorite shallow characters. “The Wire” is a show in which “all the pieces matter” to tell the whole tale. You miss one thing or ignore one element or one plot or one character development and you miss out on the bigger picture.

Most importantly its a show in which not one character is more important than any other. For years I have read from fans that its a show about black drug dealers (The Black Sopranos) or that McNulty is the star or that it can’t go on without Stringer Bell, etc. All of that was wrong. The show is about Baltimore and Baltimore is merely represnting the crumbling of American cities in general. No one character is above Baltimore, no one character is more crucial to the plot. So folks who complain about Omar dying before he exacts his revenge on Marlo are simply, in my opinion, those who still don’t get the crux of this landmark series. The moment Omar started stealing from the drug dealers he was on borrowed time as long as he stayed in B’more. His death was sudden and tragic as it was meant to be. But his story, no matter how well done, is just one of many stories being told on this show. And when I read remarks from some that they find themselves not caring as much now that Omar is gone I consider that to be a slight to all the fine work by all the writers and actors to breathe such life into so many numerous characters. Bunk and Freamon were always my two faves. And trust me if they had both left the show in season three or so I would have still kept watching and would have still been just as interested AS LONG as the quality of the storytelling remained the same. Because ultimately I am first and foremost a fan of the show itself. Those of you who seemed have lost a lot of your zeal for the show once Omar was taken down are proving to be bigger fans of Omar than of “The Wire”.

Now that’s just my opinion. And if it seems condescending then so be it. I can live with it. This is a forum for expressing and sharing opinions right? Well, that’s what I did.
