Where do you go for a good steak?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This week’s Nosh Special is about steak. Jon Waterhouse writes, “Atlanta is more than full, with steakhouse options ranging from super upscale to laid back and casual. Wiping the au jus from our chins, we cut into a few and bring you the results …”
Chops, Kevin Rathbun Steak, Taurus, Highland Tap and Longhorn were highlighted, and now we want to hear your thoughts on the matter. Where do you like to go for steak when it’s too cold to grill your own?

If I go out for a steak I go to Logan’s in Athens, otherwise I grill my own. There is no such thing as being too cold to cook out.

Have eaten steaks at The Palm, Bones, Ruth’s Chris and Capital Grill - which were all good. But I have to agree with John, nothing like a steak off of a hot charcoal grill in my own backyard! Those other places don’t even compare.

It seems this question comes up every couple of months. High end joints broil their steaks. That flavor can’t compete with a steak cooked over a charcoal fire. And the economic factor makes it a no brainer. And John is absolutely correct, it is never too cold to cook out. I even have a solid deck to cook under that makes rain a non factor, too.

For a city this big the AJC came up with only 5 good steak places and one is a bar. How fitting.
What a horrible piece of journalism, but mediocrity is very acceptable in this prideless this city.

I’ve been to Stoney River three times now and their steaks are fair at best and way overpriced. I’ve gotten better steaks at Longhorn on Towne Lake Parkway every time I’ve eaten there. I’ve also had great steaks at Aspen’s. But all in all, I agree with all the posters that say nothing beats a steak cooked on a grill.

Nothing beats a nicely marbled steak cooked rare and at home. Gotta have that fat within the steak to give it some flavor. A marinade of garlic and a little Dale’s seasoning…I just figured out what I’m having for dinner.

Go to Whole Foods. Get a dry aged steak (best meat in town) of your favorite cut — ribeye, NY strip or t-bone. Personally, I love the t-bone — has NY strip and tenderloin meat. Cook it your favorite way. Enjoy with nice cabernet sauvignon. Even if you’re not a great cook, this will be the best steak you have had in a LONG time!
By Mark
March 12, 2008 1:49 PM | Link to this
If you have a good cut of steak, why marinate it? A steak on the grill with a little cracked pepper and salt is the only way to cook a steak. You want to taste the steak, not the marinade or spices.

Right on Mark!! No marinade is needed for a quality piece of meat. The only thing I’ll do is put either a small amount of mesquite or hickory chips on the coals, depending on what mood I’m in.
Also, Pano has gotten his last nickle out of me for failing to respond to a complaint. I don’t care how good Chops might be.
To Coach, when you consider the cost of membership to Druid Hills Golf Club, your statement regarding value goes out the window.

If you cook at home and cannot get to a grill you must try Cosco’s Kirklands Sweet Mesquite Rub. Spray the steak with olive oil then apply a light coating of the rub and finish with a light coating of balsamic vinegar. Man oh man it tastes like it was cooked on the grill and with none of the hastle.
The same method works for salmon filets cooked in the oven skin down for 8 minutes.

Bones is better than Chops any day. Just at Chops the other night and, frankly, the NY Strip was nothing to write home about. McKendrick’s No.1, no question. Plus they make great martinis. Hal’s No. 2 and ditto the martinis. Chop’s over the too smokey and testerone charged Bone’s for No. 3. And it’s never too cold in Atlanta to grill out, however, the instructions were best steak “out”.

Morton’s by far has THE BEST steak! Longhorn is not consistent across the chain. A few of them in the Atlanta area can serve a good steak but too often that is not the case. Prime is ok too. Shula’s in Miami is awesome. The atmosphere and service just add to the enjoyment.
But to have a top notch experience with the food, service and restaurant ambiance, give Morton’s a call.

Bones and Chops are too stuffy to me. I’ve had Chop’s kobe steak. It was good, but nowhere near worth the money.
I do think Stoney River is great. The steaks are great, and every one of their sides has been incredible.
I’ve never been to Hal’s, but now I want to!
Finally, I agree that a steak you make at home is almost as best as the high end ones out, as long as you know what you’re doing. I get the ribeyes from Costco, then marinade for an hour or so in half soy sauce, half red wine, and garlic. It doesn’t taste like a marinated steak - just like a really good, juicy one.

Capitol Grill is up there for me. It may be because we had some left over and the waitress through it away instead of boxing it up as we requested. They cooked our entire order over and sent it home with us. Stoney River has rebounded. They went into a funk when the original owners sold it.

Spot on, Mark…there’s no need for futzing around with a good cut of steak.
I like Rathbun’s, where you can order it blue, in case rare is too cooked for you, and Bones over Chops. Haven’t tried Hal’s yet, but it’s in the neighborhood, so I’ll head over there.
I also have a sentimental fondness for the Highland Tap, primarily because I associate it with many good, long nights of steak, cocktails, and female companionship.

And remember folks. Always start with the steak at room temp. Never go from fridge to grill. Get your CHARCOAL grill as hot as possible, then cook for 5 mins per side with lid closed, but all vents open. Gas grills are for amateurs. Let sit for 10 mins before cutting. Just FYI….

If you ever get down to Tampa, Florida….visit Bern’s Steakhouse. They raise their own beef, then it’s aged….and the BEST steak I have ever had, along with everything else on their menu. http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/ Here in Atlanta, I like Aspen’s in Marietta. I think Stoney River is overpriced and not really that good. I’ve eaten at Chops and liked their steaks as well. But, as pointed out by most of you, I really like cooking on the grill. Nothing like it!

Um, for the person who said the best filet in town is in Newnan? What? Do you ever actually come into town? How is that in town for someone in Alpharetta, Canton, or Duluth?
I’ve been to most and some of my favorites are Kevin Rathbun Steak, Chops, McKendrick’s, Longhorn, Stoney River, Ruth’s Chris, Morton’s, etc., etc., etc., and my favorite is Hal’s on Old Ivy. For anyone who doesn’t list Hal’s in their top 1, 2, or 3, they obviously haven’t been. They don’t advertise, similar to Bones and Chops, for the same reason - they don’t need to. The Palm, Ruth’s Chris, Stoney River all are decent, but they simply can’t compete.
Hal’s is my favorite, but I also have the same comment as many others here and that is that sometimes the best steak is at home.
There have been nights where I have stopped by Fresh Market or Whole Foods for a phenominal Ribeye or T-Bone, grill it out over charcoal and can’t imagine having a better steak anywhere in the city. Of course, missing some of the fabulous sides/desserts at the better restaurants is tough to make up for. Oh, and outside Atlanta, if you haven’t been to Peter Luger’s you haven’t been to the best steakhouse yet!

Haven’t tried Rathbun’s yet.
But, I thinks that Chops, while good, doen’t make the “cut” when compared to steakhouses you would find in NYC…or Houston (Pappas Brothers) which is the best city for steak.
For my taste Bones…and Capitol Grill for more every day.
Also prefer McKendrick’s to some on this list.

I went to buy meat at Fresh Market once, the “meat man” at the counter did not know what I was talking about when I asked if they carried Prime Grade. Enough said. Best steak I have ever eaten was a Prime Grade filet that I bought at Publix and cooked myself.

It is hard to beat a filet from Ruth’s Chris coming out in the butter and melting in your mouth. Capital Grill is just amazig as well. You can argue about cooking your own steaks but those filets from Ruth’s Chris are just to die for.

The best steak I’ve ever had didn’t come off of my grill, it came out of my oven, purchased a full standing rib roast and slow cooked it at 200 degrees for he better part of 4 hours until the internal temp was 120, pulled it out and let stand tented in foil for 15 minutes. The roast literally melted against the knife as it was sliced… Unbelieveable and charcoal be damned!!! Alas I’ve eaten steaks all over Atlanta and I think there are many good choices Ruth’s Chris (downtown, the one at perimeter sucks) Bones, Mckendricks, Fogo de chao (sp?) and I actually like Longhorn, the meat is good and it’s very casual, all you snobbish nay-sayers keep your stuffed shirt outta there, we don’t want you there anyway. Lastly, to Woody…wtf? If you dislike Atlanta so much, move on, I’m sick of people here talking about how they hate it. You don’t like where you are…go somewhere else!

To yagottaeat, your deal with the rib roast sounds great! For me, that is one thing that is done excellently in an oven. I don’t remember the exact directions, but a while back I heard something about putting one in the oven and setting it to broil for about 15 minutes, and then turning the oven off and leaving it for a few hours. Of course I would research it I were to think about doing it, but your way seems more logical. Anyway, I’m with you on Longhorn, as I said in an earlier post, I’d bet they get their meat from the same place as the others. On top of that, they are owned by Capital Grille, and that’s some pretty good company.

I’m sure that all of these are good, but ask anyone who works downtown where to get a great steak and they will tell you the Steak & Ale on International & West Peachtree. For some reason, this particular one out of the franchise gets it right every time. Go early for lunch or you will have a decent wait in line.

Rathbun’s is good. NY Prime is good. Chops is good. But Bones is still the standard.
On the grill, I like to coat a big ribeye with cracked pepper - literally until you can’t see the meat anymore - on both sides. Add a little garlic salt. Then drop it on a screaming hot grill. Be sure to add a few pads of butter on top. That way the butter drippings will hit the coals and soon your steak will be on fire. Let it stand in the direct flame for two or three minutes on each side. You’ll have a nice char on the outside, medium rare melt-in-your-mouth on the inside. Pure heaven.

The best steaks in ATL are cooked at my house on a hot gas grill; does not matter what the weather is like. I like mine rare with fresh ground pepper and a little steak rub. I add a side of fresh grilled asparagus for a great low carb meal.
Fogo or Carrabba’s are my birthday places. I miss Steak and Ale as our group gathered each Sunday after church to eat there.
Longhorn changed their menu and I don’t like it. I cashed in my gift card last time I went. I do agree, that the service and food is not even at their restaurants.
Ted’s Montana Grill is a great place and it does not matter if the steak is bison or beef it is tender and tasty. The service is always outstanding.
I’ve eaten at a lot of steak places and paid a lot of money. Morton’s is good, but cooking at home wins hands down. DH always says the service is excellent. Last time I ate at Ruth Chris’ I left a 1¢ tip and American Express printed that on the statement.

You kow, I guess it all depends on the situation. In the end I always agree that the best steak is the one that I seasoned and cooked with those wonderful grill marks on my own grill on my own porch. Anything more than medium is for folks to scared to enjoy sushi.
I also have experienced the 3am to 5am Tbone from the Awful Wawfle and can’t deny that when I want something after 6 hours of Bud light(or whatever you choose, NewCastle is great) the it can’t be beat with some over medium eggs and hash’s scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, toppless and diced.
I also have found within my years on this planet that dry aged beef makes the best steaks. You can do it from home but I can’t stand waiting on a piece of meat(Now I know how my-ex wife feels).
If any of you ever get a chance and like the mountains, there is a place in Clarkesville, GA called The Attic. Not to pricey, wonderful service and they will cook it like yall were at the house on a Sunday night with your best friends from down the street.

Having eaten at Bones, Chops, RC, Stoney River, The Stockyard (Nashville), Morton’s (over-rated and over-priced) and every sorry chain steakhouse out there, there is only one place I put far and above the others.
Ironhorse Steakhouse in Woodstock. Forget RC, Bones and the rest. Those are just more well known, overpriced restuarants. It’s just off 575 at Sixes Rd, so it’s easy to get to. It’s not a pretentious restaurant like others I mentioned, but it clean, fresh decor that doesn’t detract from the meal.
The steak itself is absolutely untouchable for the price ($25-$30 for the steak). It’s the thickest cut of filet I have ever seen, yet cooked to perfection. Their special is a strip covered in a peppercorn sauce, that everyone I have eaten there with says is outstanding (I am a filet fan so haven’t tried it).
One word of caution .. they cook the steaks exactly to order. So if you tend to order a little under or over cooked because you are used to restaurants screwing it up, don’t do it here.
The wait staff is timely, yet not annoying. Some places it’s hard to get more than one bite and a bit of conversation down without being interrupted fror the 16th time. Not here, as they back off and let you enjoy the meal, but keep a close eye on the table to see if anyone is glancing around for service, or if anything is needed. I get annoyed easily by wait staff who just won’t allow you to eat your meal while it’s hot. To me, I would prefer to have no service than constant interruptions.
I do love grilled steaks, but quite frankly, the cuts you get at the typical grocery store lately are very lacking in quality. Butcher prices are as much as eating out, so I just prefer to enjoy not having to do the work.

I saw one other person mention BluePointe and they do, in fact, make a great steak. They are definitely known for their Asian Fusion cuisine but their steaks are VERY good too. I am a medium type of person but I order medium rare there. So amazing. If you go in there, do my friends a favor. Don’t ask for fried chicken or a steak well done. Also, PLEASE tip 15% or more! If you can afford to eat out at Blue Pointe, then you can afford to tip the server well. The service is excellent :)

Whose idea was it to put longhorn as a steak place? chains should be banned! Gumbeaux’s in douglasville has a terrific bourbon ribeye. Marinading is normally used for tougher cuts of meat. A steak should NEVER be marinaded. You simply need to buy a better quality steak. And cooking on a gas grill is a sin. You might as well save you some time and broil it! Gas grills are for amatuers.
