Gas prices putting the brakes on driving?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gas prices increased nearly 7 cents over the past two weeks, putting the brakes on the driving and travel habits of many consumers.
According to the Lundberg Survey, prices at the pump reached an inflation-adjusted high of $3.26 a gallon for self-serve regular. Read the CNN report here.
What’s your strategy for dealing with higher gas prices? Are you car pooling to work or working from home more? Are you traveling less? Have you cutback on spring break or summer travel plans? Are you in the market for a more gas efficient car?
If you are an employer, are you encouraging employees to work from home?

The U.S. would not be having this problem if it were not for the Democrats who have refused to let us build another refinery or drill for oil.
Democrats are the reason we are so dependant on foriegn oil.
This should not be a surprise to anyone that has a brain that gasoline prices will continue to go thru the roof. If we elect a Democrat into office, everyone’s (that is the people who work hard for a living)taxes will increase %5.
The only way to solve this problem is to start drilling in Alaska and the Gulf.

We need to stop “handling” it. Gas prices have gradually risen since Hurricane Katrina. We need to protest this crap instead of putting up with it. Find ways to show our leaders that we won’t pay it, and this situation is intolerable.

Gas prices are up, grocery prices are up, cable bill is up, water bill is up, power bill is up, gas bill is up, but paycheck remains the same for the last two years…….
I do have to drive to work, but only 17 miles one way. My job requires me to be hands-on, and is not possible to work from home. As a shipping/receiving manager, I have to be on-site.

Gas prices are up because spring break is upon us and people are driving to their destinations. They will go down for a minute in May, then back up for summer. We won’t get any relief until after Labor Day.

Unfortunately most of the time you have no choice but to drive. I do carpool but that only helps so much. As soon as the weather is nicer, my husband and I will be taking our motorcycle more places whenever possible. My company would never allow anyone to work from home. I do try to consolidate errands whenever possible. I have a Honda Civic so I get great gas mileage.

I moved to Midtown and take Marta to work every day. I fill up about once a month now and my company pays for the monthly Marta pass. Can’t beat it.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but gas prices have nowhere to go but up. Crude oil is a finite resource. Our country has evolved around the automobile, and we are totally dependent on using 4,000 pounds of metal to move 200 pounds of human around suburbia. Combine that with unprecedented increasing demand from China and India, shady supply management tactics from OPEC, a pathetic Congress which comes up with new ideas to tax us on the energy we consume in light of the highest oil prices yet (50 cent gas tax proposed last week?!). That compounds the problem, and then you have the eco-mentalist groups who oppose exploration of new sources of energy because it could disrupt caribou mating or bird flight patterns, or what have you. That’s why prices are up and won’t come down.
It would beoove all of us to think about how you can cut your consumption if you don’t want to bleed cash at the pump. We’ll need it to compensate for the inflation that follows…

How is my family handling the run up in gas prices?
If gas prices come down, the first thing we’ll do is waste it again, driving the prices back up. I don’t like high gas prices anymore than the rest of you, but it’s a reality now.

I see we started the blog with a PARTISAN MORON HACK. Well Nick let’s see…
I guess you forgot we had Republican Presidents from 1980-1992, of which just about all of the “great Reagan’s” years bore a Republican majority in the Senate. Most of the Clinton presidency saw a Republican majority in the House AND Senate. And of course we know your almighty god “W” has been residing over our current fiasco for the past 7 years with a Republican majority up until just last year.
Yet, you find some crazy way to try to place the blame on Democrats. If you would simply stop swinging from the GONADS of people like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingram, Rush Lumbaugh and all those morons and spewing their talking points, you might actually be able to make an intelligent assenssment of the situation.

People are crying about $3 per gallon gas but they aren’t outside Starbuck’s with torches and pitchforks when those idiots charge $6 for 8oz of toilet water? Stop crying about gas, we use as much gas as the NEXT 20 COUNTRIES COMBINED. I look all over Atlanta and I see nothing but single driver behemoth SUV’s getting 8mpg. The funny thing is there are gas wasting SUV’s with NEW DEALER TAGS still being seen. Since these people obviously have money to burn and our precious resources along with it, stick any vehicle getting less than 20mpg highway with $1000 surcharge for every mile under 20mpg. You get 10mpg you pay $10K tax on top of the vehicle cost. That $10K goes into an alternative fuels development fund.

Nick, did you know that the entire Bush family is bestest of friends with the Saudi Royal Company? they have promoted dependency on middle eastern oil through two recent BS wars. yet you would blame the people who have looked for alternative fuels, solar energy, green building, yes those darn pesky democrats and liberals. even with this horrible economy caused by two big oil men staring you in the face, you choose to tear down your fellow Americans rather than do what is right for the future of this country. oh my God Nick, look out! two gay people just got married, better take care of that before anything else that our country might need. and only a completely programmed moron would believe that two guys that have kept us in this stupid war for 5 years couldn’t get a measly little refinery built. I bet you also think that being Iraq and losing over 4000 of our military personnel is saving American lives. we have now lost more people in Iraq than the Twin Towers. are all you small minded sheep saying that military lives aren’t as important as civilian lives. I’M TELLING YOU, THEY ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN CIVILIAN LIVES. and that’s because they are actually trying to serv e their country. and serving your country is more than an American Flag lapel pin or a stupid yellow ribbon sticker on the back of your car. the reason gas prices are so high is because idiots like you got fooled into voting for two big oil men to run our country so easily just by them SAYING they were doing it for Jesus, children and the flag. most people are two afraid to stand on their own and feel more protected when hiding within a group. that’s what Republicans do. to so rigidly support any political party even when the writing is on the wall, even when it is hurting our country, is the most unpatriotic thing anyone can do. and to disrespect any suffering American just to support clearly evil politicians with hateful rhetoric like, ‘they are living beyond their means’ and other crap like that is also extremely unpatriotic.

I don’t like high fuel prices but have little choice but to absorb the higher cost. We have no mass transit in my rural area. I owe several thousand dollars more on my thirsty pickup than it’s worth, so trading it is not an option. Higher fuel cost have eaten into my income. As a result, I’ve cut back. For example, I drive less and don’t eat out a restaurants as much. . A trip the supermarket is more costly too. High fuel prices are just a reality of life now. Nick is correct. The only way to lower gasoline prices is to adjust the equilibrium between supply and demand. To lower prices, we either have to increase supply or decrease demand.
Since gas prices are set globally and since the Chinese and Indian emerging economies are demanding more petroleum, demand won’t decrease.
We can, however, increase supplies while at the same time conduct R&D on new fuel technologies. But the market will determine what new technologies are viable and when they make sense to adopt.
Funny how liberals’ ideas of improving gas prices never include increasing supplies. Libs want to fix gas prices (Google “Nixon and price controls”)and raise taxes but never want to drill for more oil or increase the refining capacity in the U.S.
But liberal conspiracy nuts entertain us with stories of how President Bush is “bestest” friends with this family or that family.
What they lack in economic sophistication they make up for in word creation skills.
And who said libs didn’t believe in creation?

I have considered car pooling with a co-worker who lives by me. However, he drives a huge Suburban and for me to pay 1/2 of his gas, would cost me more than filling up my own vehicle. He uses the “hi-test” and it costs about $100 to fill his tank up. That would be $50 from me, and my own vehicle only requires $40 to fill the tank……. And he has two kids in separate day cares, so it just isn’t feasible.

if you support the oil companies you are a bad American. if you make excuses for the oil companies you are a bad American. the oil companies with the help of Cheney and Bush could break ground on a refinery tomorrow if they wanted to, but that would come out of profits and resolve a bottleneck in the supply system that used to manipulate prices and profits. this would also increase reserve supplies. but it would come out of their profits to reinvest in the company something robber barons don’t like to do. but increased oil reserves are not the answer, alternative energy sources and eliminating wasteful behavior is. and all the idiots that have gotten us into this economic mess can do is create boogeymen, like the liberals, that’s a crooked wimp that would do something like that at the expense of our country.

We should increase the tax on gasoline substantially to encourage more sustainable transportation choices abd invest in our mass-transit infrastructure and new technologies to reduce our dependance on oil. This tax increase could be offset by a comparable decrease in income taxes.

a bad leader can hurt a country worse than a bad enemy can. the oil companies are hurting this country, they have had help doing so from their enablers in the White House, to support someone who is helping someone else hurt our country is unpatriotic. to blame other Americans for this, in a swift boat manner, is one of the most dishonorable things a person can do.

Well, 2 years ago my husband and I saw this coming. We both work in the city but were living out in Larryville. The commute was 1 hour each way if we carpooled and 1.5 if not. Gas was still under $3 but rising. And, my friend from New Zealand kept reminding me that Americans get subsidized gas so we’re not even paying the $6/gal that most of the world is paying.
So, we sold our house in the burbs and moved to a smaller, more expensive home very close to our jobs. I sometimes drive, but it’s only 4 miles when I do. Most times I ride my bike. If the weather is bad I can take a MARTA bus - drops off just a block from work.
I didn’t even realize that gas had gotten so expensive because I fill up about once a month or once every 6 weeks….

liberal from the Latin liberalis: a)belonging to freedom b)worthy of a free man, gentlemanly, decorous, noble, noble-minded; kind, generous, liberal, plentiful, bountiful
Webster New World Dictionary: 1. generous 2. ample; abundant 3.not literal or strict 4. tolerant; broad-minded 5. favoring political reforms and progress
and what is so horrible about a liberal? they have to be invalidated into some kind of monster by the people that knowingly are doing bad things, that’s why liberals are so horrible. and what does it say for a definition of conservative? opposed to change, basically ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’. is that what we really want for our country, a country that has the potential for further greatness but is slowly slipping down the same path as Rome, more of the same? no! now is a pivotal time, we act now to save our country or it will probably be too late. the children aren’t our future, we are, wake up folks. it’s not about supporting political parties. A lot of people are dealing with higher gas prices by parking their cars – at least some of the time. Since the first of the year, 617 people have signed up to earn cash for clean commuting in The Clean Air Campaign’s Cash for Commuters program.
Another 106 earned monthly gas cards last month through another program, Carpool Rewards. It’s safe to assume the majority were motivated by high prices at the pumps.
Commuters who participate in Cash for Commuters not only save big bucks not buying gas, but also earn cash for trying carpooling, transit or telework. You can earn $3 a day, up to $180 over an assigned 90-day period.
All you have to do is: 1. download an application at [www.cleanaircampaign.com].
2. Start carpooling, teleworking, using transit, walking or biking. 3. Tell the Clean Air Campaign how you got to and from work using alternative commute options.
As for transit, many people have the mistaken idea that MARTA’s the only option. It isn’t. In Cobb, you can ride Cobb Community Transit, which links to MARTA. In Gwinnett, you have the option of Gwinnett County Transit, where the services include several popular express bus routes downtown. C-Tran serves Clayton County. The Georgia Regional Transit Authority also runs the extremely popular express buses originating in 12 metro counties.
And then there’s telework. Since The Clean Air Campaign began focusing on getting employers to allow teleworking, it has helped to launch more than 60 formal programs. There are resources available to kick start your company at [www.cleanaircampaign.com]. Why not look into it?
