What are you doing with your rebate check?

Get ready for those stimulus rebate checks from Uncle Sam. They’ll be distributed on a staggered basis electronically if you have direct deposit or through the mail if the IRS sends you a paper check tax refund.

When you actually receive it is based on the last two digits of your Social Security number and if your tax return was processed by April 15. Those with direct deposit should expect to see their electronic deposits between April 28 and May 16. Those who receive paper checks will get their stimulus rebates beginning May 16 on through July. Here’s the link for specific dates when you can expect yours:

I know the president is hoping to kick start the economy by encouraging us to spend that money since consumers account for about two-thirds of economic activity. But a lot of my friends plan to park that money in the bank for their rainy-day funds or pay down bills. Mine is already accounted for. I’ll be spending it overseas during my upcoming holiday — good for France’s economy but not necessarily helpful to the USA’s economic malaise as President Bush is hoping.

So what to do?

Scott Martin, a senior associate of the Henssler Financial Group, a Kennesaw-based money management firm with $1.22 billion in assets under advisement, suggests the following:

  1. Begin by investing in or starting a retirement account (think Roth or Traditional IRA). You might be able to have your rebate check deposited directly into your retirement account.

  2. Save for university. OK, so $300 or $600 may not even pay for a semester’s worth of text books but, again, if you invest early, particularly in a state sponsored 529 college savings plan, you can build up that tuition money to finance your kids’ college bills later on. There also are some tax advantages, too. In the Georgia sponsored 529 plan, that money grows tax-deferred and when you pull it out if you use it for a qualified educational expense, it’s tax free, too.

  3. Invest in yourself. You could use that money toward taking a class or two in your field, or get a certificate in your line of work. Beefing up or broadening your skills could make you more attractive internally if your company is looking to cut positions or more marketable to a new employer. There also are potential tax deductions for education-related expenses

  4. Put money away for a rainy day fund. “A lot of people are living their lives hoping it doesn’t rain,” he says. He acknowledges that not everyone can sock away three to six months living expenses away in one fell swoop. What you can do is build toward a short-term goal. Perhaps but away enough money — using your tax rebate as the catalyst — so that you have one month’s mortgage payment saved. Then make your next goal to be twice that. Whatever you decide to save, just make sure you do it regularly either on a weekly or monthly basis. “Whether it’s $5 a week or $5 a month its starting the habit to save. That’s what important.”

  5. Pay off your debt. But if you don’t have a retirement account, set that up first. Then pay off your debt. If you have a retirement account but don’t have a rainy fund, he advises to pay off the debt first before saving for emergencies, unless you’re disciplined enough to do a little bit of both by not making more charges to your credit cards.

Have you received your check? What it the amount you expected? More or less? What do you plan to do with the money?

My plans are to buy some underwear. Since the gas crunch I didn’t buy any to save money. Also I am going to get some toliet tissue. I am so tired of getting it out of the mens room at work and sneaking it out in my briefcase.

For the first time in my life I’ve reached a point where it’s difficult to pay off my credit card bill each month. So that’s the first thing my rebate check will go towards. Then let’s see….gas, groceries, oh and maybe I should save in case I get laid off. Looks like this rebate won’t be enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to make a frivolous weekend trip to the mall.

First of all, why do they keep saying people will begin receiving their money (direct deposit) today? That’s not going to happen until tonight’s bank processing (maybe), which means you’ll get your money tomorrow (maybe). Anywho……..

  1. pay bills
  2. buy gas
  3. buy groceries
  4. save the rest (if there’s anything left after 1-3)

“The achievers once again get screwed.”

Actually, it’s all the folks who receive the rebate that are getting screwed. Our pay raises don’t match the rising cost of living, and everyone knows $300-600 won’t make a real dent in anyone’s lower middle-class budget.

Consider yourself lucky that you don’t qualify for the rebate… I’m sure most of us “under-achievers” would gladly trade places with you and receive thousands of dollars more a year instead of $600 that will only lead to a bigger national debt that we in the middle class will be taxed to pay in the future.

And, I work hard for my money, so I’ll thank you not to judge those of us under the $75,000 mark so harshly - we make up the bulk of the country.

Wow. If you are so financially comfortable, Dan, I would think you put Bush in office. He’s the one who ordered this “economic stimulus package,” so how about directing your bizarre anger towards him instead of those of us receiving? After all, I had no say in this decision - I would have voted no as - worse than the fact that you have been left out, poor Dan - we are on the path to financial ruin as a country and this Bandaid is way too expensive.

If you make a little (or lot) less and are getting some more of your money back from the IRS (which they never should’ve taken in the first dayum place), good for you!

If you make a little (or lot) more and you’re not getting more of you money back from the IRS (see above), then good for you!

If you happen to be right at the cutoff and you’re getting more of your money back from the IRS (again, see above), then good for you too!!!

Why all the spiteful, hateful, jealous comments?!! Are your lives that miserable?!!! Seems to me that if you’re making enough money to look down your nose at others, shouldn’t you be happier?!! What makes you think that those that earn more than 75K don’t work hard for their money? Where were you when I worked 12 hour days, on weekends on holidays, and in the middle of the night with my foreign customers. What happened between 25K a year when I started and now in the 6 digits that made me the ” evil rich “? Its called hard work and sacrifice.

You may be the majority of the country however, the share of the income tax paid by the top 1 percent of income earners went from 25.8 percent to over 37 percent. I am the minority but pay a close majority of the taxes.

I am hoping to be able to do all the car maintenance in one trip since it is time for it and to get gas, groceries and save some.
I am being extremely idealistic with my hopes because the money will not go as far as I need to in the current economy.
Hopefully the car maintence will be complete at least and if so then will run down the remaining list. For those of you that do not qualify - those of us that will be receiving this stimulus pkg did not make the decision to exclude you. If you have an issue with how the determination was made you are literally barking up the wrong tree.

While it seems that this REBATE looks like help that we could all use. It has been reported through various news sources that the government is going to want this back. How is this a REBATE? They should call it a LOAN. I intend to put mine in a saving account until next tax season, because i’ll have to give back the government 1,500 that I don’t have to spend. Anyone remember the $250 child credit that we had to pay back the next year?

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves

I didn’t enjoy any of what made you a single mother so why should I have to share…this country is ridiculous.

If you’re not rich or poor you get f*cked….again….enjoy spending my money on food and gas as yall proclaim….amazing how now everybody needs that $600 to eat or drive…sells your cars and get a scooter if gas is too high for you…but please don’t act like you’re going to need that money to eat and drive….

Bonnie First of all, What is an “unlicky soul”?

Oh those evil rich people. They actually got an education, and went out on their own, worked their butts off, and now are making tons of money, because they actually WORKED for it (and suffered too, I am sure).

While you sit on your butt, blogging and complaining about the evil rich, what have you done to make yourself rich? Or are you too waiting on the government to help you out. I guess you want Hillary for president too….

Maybe if you got off your butt, and took care of you and yours, you wouldn’t be so worried about “sharing”……..

No one should have to take care of YOU. You need to take care of you. It’s called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. A word I am sure you are not aware of…..

Y’all are too funny!!!

What have we learned so far this morning……….

  1. Some of the folks who earn more obviously think they do so because they are better, smarter, more hard working than those who do not earn as much. (NOT!!!)

  2. The “lower” income earners obviously do so because they are lazy, uneducated, and spend their money frivolously. (NOT!!!!)

  3. Obviously money does not buy class (but it does buy lots of Hatorgade!!!), or half of these comments would not be posted!!!

  4. The truth behind the “hate” is that those “over-achievers” are hurting too, and they’re mad because Dubya didn’t think of them (after they gave him their votes!).

Strom,

In Capitalism not everyone can be wealthy of have an education. IF 100% were educated, and 100% made 150,000 a year we would have inflation rates around 45%. Capitalism creates a Caste system like they have in India— For exaple— The low income earners are basiclly the Slave class, Semi educated people are the Producing Middle class, and they Top 1% are the Elites that are running and controlling the Country. They top 1% own 99.3% of the wealth in this country (so makes sence to TAX The Hell out of them YES YES)

According to good ‘ol Uncle Sam, I make too much money to receive a “rebate”.

What a F++KING JOKE! The people that President Bush is trying to “help” are the same folks that have been trying to “oust” him from office for the past eight years.

Hard working people like myself, should be the ones receiving “rebate” checks, because we are the ones paying the most taxes!

60% of Americans and 100% of illegals pay NO TAXES AT ALL, EVER, but “sponge” off the hardworking, educated, responsible TAX PAYING citizens.

Just another “hand-out” to people who don’t contribute……….

Tamika if you gave $450,000 to charity last year then you do not qualify for this tax break. No middle class America is notselfish, greedy or lazy. They work hard for their money (so does anyone that actually works for their money). But they do not deserve to be taxed to death because they work hard. If you can give that much to charity you no longer qualify as Middle Class and need to discuss what you have knowledge of not an opinion with no factual basis.

God Help America. Looks like most of the bloggers here have sold their sould for $600. Thats pretty cheap - still what do you expect from commie loving hate the rich folks. Seems like they hate as much as they say we hate them. They feel society has “done them wrong” - Heck, I am not getting a check, and I dont like that they are getting my money, but I would rather have what I have then mix with the likes of those uneducated people who like to be told what to think and say - Funny thing is, Hillary will have the last laugh on them as they are feeding right into her plan. She knows how much they can be bought for and it will only be a matter of time before they are back on their knees begging for more. There she will stand and one will hear her laughter as she throws them a dime and they scramble like unkempt orphans to grab a crumb -

Well, some of us actually live within our means, have no credit card debt, or any other debt for that matter, other than the house mortgage and the associated montly bills. I pay cash for everything.

I am a single parent, I have worked at the same place for 16 years, pay my taxes, raised a child by myself, with no child support, no government handouts, WIC, etc., and I have been able to purchase two homes, and get my child into a good school. I even paid cash for my vehicle.

I have a nice, comfortable 401(K), an IRA, two Mutual Funds AND money in three bank accounts. I could easily run out and blow this “rebate” money, but I much prefer to put it into savings. I don’t need a huge tv, or a fancy car. I like knowing that if anything were to happen, i.e. loss of my job, I can take care of us for at least 5 months.

I have a simple life, and I love it. I refuse to “keep up with the Joneses” and impress people I don’t know. I don’t expect anyone to give me their hard earned money. I work hard and I take care of me and mine.

Oh, and I make less than $45K year.

With the balance of payments deficit for this country running at record levels, the Chinese should be thanking the US government for borrowing even more money to help pay for the growth of the Chines economy.

For those who are complaining about the price of gas, just wait until inflation really hits home. The Fed has printed $1Trillion to bail out their buddies on Wall St. since October and you’re going to pay for it with inflation eating away at your income and savings.

money isn’t free, never has been, sobody has to earn it and America isn’t paying it’s way in the world. So sooner or later your standard of living will fall. It will fall to a level you can’t even comprehend today. That is unless you start producing more and live within your means, saving at least 10% of your income for the future. Read about the Weimar in Germany, it is the model for the US today.

When I leave they cry and i am never forgotten. Don’t forget how much you pay me to do all of this and you trust me with your kids too. Be careful of putting certain people in a class beneath you, because they might just be in your house taking care of your kids. What price are you willing to pay??????

Your Nanny, working 50+ hours a week unselfishly taking care of your kids for a small price, because that is what I love to do.

I don’t get a rebate check from the IRS. Uncle Sam (as well as Hillary and Osama) says I make too much money and should pay even more. I guess working 16 hours a day shouldn’t be rewarded because I’m being selfish. There’s alot of welfare mommas having babies with multiple fathers who need my hard-earned money. There’s illegal aliens needing their free healthcare at our hospitals that need it, too. I guess I’m just an evil Republican who needs to learn to accept we live in an unfair society. Tamaka - Living off of $250,000 interest from your savings a year is great if you can do it most of us can’t. Being inpertinent about your good fortune is rude in extremes. From what I read: The amount of your tax rebate will be based on your 2007 federal income tax return’s adjusted gross income (AGI), which is not just your annual salary. Your AGI includes all income sources including wages, salaries, tips, interest, alimony paid to you, and dividends, offset by any specific business, or capital gains or losses - but it does not include the personal exemption, or any standard or itemized deductions. You are entitled to receive the full rebate amount unless your adjusted gross income exceeds a certain threshold, in which case you will either receive a reduced rebate or be entirely excluded from receiving one at all if your income is simply too high. However, the economic stimulus package is intended to cover many people and nearly 130 million Americans are expected to qualify for at least part or all of their entitled tax rebate check.

So if your annual interest earned on the savings you have is $250,000 because you are wealthy enough not to have to work - why would you even want this stimulus amount? As you are stating so blatently you are SOOOO much better than the rest of us.

We’re going to use the money to pay off my braces. Yes, I’m 27 with braces.. totally worth every penny. We’ve done enough spending in the last year, bought 2 cars, a house, furniture, appliances and lots of other stuff. We’re being smart with this rebate. We took a vacation with our tax refund this year.

I think one of the reasons we’re in a recession is because of the credit card debt that we all have gotten ourselves into. We have all realized that we would rather be debt free and have stopped “spending” and started paying off. I think the government is naive in thinking people will actually go out and blow the money. Maybe some people with but most of us will be smart and payoff or save.

Some of the hardest working individuals fall in that category, and many of them are doing jobs that provide us all with certain levels of comfort and security to enjoy our lives no matter how much money we make. Let’s see here … Married filing jointly + 1 child = $1500 tax “rebate” from Uncle Sam. Since we just paid $2200 in federal income taxes, the “rebate” does not even cover our tax liability. We will still be $700 in the hole after our “rebate” arrives.

Nevertheless, we will joyfully tithe 10% to charity as a reminder that Jesus (NOT the government) owns it all. The remaining 90% will promptly be deposited into our money market emergency fund.

Check out www.daveramsey.com or www.crown.org for more info on how to be a wise steward of your finances. These websites have helped my family tremendously.

Oh, and Kathryn, way to go! Your original post was truly inspirational. I think it is awesome how you have been able to find success in your personal finances. It’s not what you make that matters … it’s what you do with it that really counts!

wow ‘Tamika’ (above) you are an idiot. Congrats - no one owes you anything. if you want to make more money find a way to better yourself, work harder, and get a better job. I only make 35,000 a year so you can’t call me a rich snob looking down on you. Did you ever think that alot of people that aren’t getting returns are hard working people that have worked their butts off to get where they are? Most of them had to pay money to the government. I am happy to be getting any money at all. Just be happy you get anything. ONCE AGAIN NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING! Oh and Hillary’s tax increase will definately make it so you have more money - HA!

We work HALF A YEAR for Money that is not ours to keep!! That is Modern Day Slavery!!

I know exactly what I’m doing with my rebate check !! I’m giving it right back to the U.S.Government to pay my 2007 Fed. taxes. Stimulus? Ha. I earned in the mid 20k’s this year, live in a mobile home that costs me $1500 a month, add a car, gas and food and I’m in the hole most months. Entertainment? That will be writing the check to pay the check to the IRS. It’s a comedic American tragedy.

This is a shell game. People should realize that the creation of money is the cause for inflation. Food and gas prices AND stock prices are all going up, have you noticed? Industry, reflected by the stock market, is not healthy, because stock prices are not even keeping pace with the devaluation of the dollar to the Euro and most currencies. Helping out the individual with a little cash is a complete joke. This is more of a vote buying scam common in developing countries that was perpetrated by a do nothing Congress that won’t make hard decision to make positive change. Of course the president has encouraged it all … been the root cause … and all of us will be hurt for a long time. This is not a solution but the biggest joke of the year.

I must say since major brain surgery in “94” which led me from full time employment to medical disability, it has been mighty rough but the Lord has provided and this money will be used to buy food, clothing and pay on drug store bill, I can’t look at this in a joking matter because however the government is sending it, I for one am truly grateful. I didn’t know what it meant to go from a salaried income down to zero and then a yr later ssdisability. I say again thanks for rebate, over the years much taxes have been paid through me. Looking for check soon!

What is the Chinese currency trading at against the dollar? If you think the euro or british sterling is good; you haven’t seen real buying power. A food shortage in other parts of the world? Not for long. They will buy our capacity.

Seeings how so many of you are going to fist fill up your gas tanks, Bush and his oil company buds are going to be the first to profit from this gift. If everybody in this country would pick a day to call in “empty” to work it might instigate a change to the economy that would make a difference. Not sure what that difference would be, but it sure would hit business hard if they had no workers!
