Are some prom dresses too risque?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
![]() |
| From CNN video |
| Marche Taylor’s prom dress was deemed too revealing. |
A Houston teen’s choice of prom attire landed her in cuffs instead of wrist corsages. SEE THE DRESS in this video.
Marche Taylor, a student at Madison High School, tried to attend her prom at a Marriott hotel wearing a custom-made gold, midriff-baring mini-halter dress. School officials deemed the frock way too revealing and said that it violated a school dress code.
“I actually like the dress. Everybody else likes my dress,” Taylor told a KHOU-TV reporter. She said friends tried to make quick adjustments to the dress but she was still denied access.
She demanded her money back and at some point the police were called.
It’s unusual for police to intercept a prom-goer, but this time of year the internet is usually filled photos of risque and downright weird prom outfits.
Was it the right decision to deny Taylor access to the prom? Should police have been called?
Check out these AJC prom photo galleries.

Most definitely. She should be dancing in a strip club rather than going to a high school prom.
Where were her parents?

The “dress” was entirely inappropriate for a high school prom and I agree with the school officials sending her home, but it’s ridiculous that the issue couldn’t be resolved without calling the police.

Absolutely they were correct to deny her access. They had a stated policy and she was in violation of it. PLUS, she looked horrible in it. They should have denied entry just for being stupid, which is rather obvious when you watch the interview.

I saw it. It would be OK for a hooker convention or a fetish show but not a prom. NO WAY WOULD I ADMIT HER SHE IS CLASSLESS ALONG WITH HER PARENT (S) IF SHE HAS 2.

She must of thought that she was going to a Halloween party istead of her prom..As somone else wanted to know, where was her Mother when she left the house in that?? Is that a tattoo on her chest?? Seventeen, already has tattoo’s & wanted to go out wearing that dress…That explains everything you need to know about the parents…

I wouldn’t care if she was a model student with a 4.0 GPA, she couldn’t be THAT STUPID to think the dress was acceptable. A prom has been, and always will be, a formal affair. It is not an event where bathing suits or thongs will ever be accepted. And what kind of parents would actually allow their daughter to attend a prom in something as trashy as that?? It reflects poorly on her, and her family’s, morals.

That dress is absolutely skanky!! They were correct in not allowing her to enter. There is also a principle involved - the policy is there for a reason and should not be allowed to be violated! It is frustrating to hear these kids act as if the rules shouldn’t apply to them. That is the root of the problem to me - an inability to submit to a set of guidelines and rules. You don’t get to ignore them just because you want to.

What is infinitely more offensive than her “dress” is her barbarous use of language. Pure ebonics: “prum, “prollem,” “axed.” Et cetera. What a wonder: takes fewer than 60 seconds to spot a tattooed ghetto-dweller.

I saw the dress on CNN and it is horrible. She didn’t have a date. As a male I would not take her out anywhere…
Where are the parents? If someone would have made an of the wall comment about her, she would have have said something to them.
Again, I glad she could not go to the prom looking like she was dressed for ‘TRICK’ -without the treat….please don’t ever dress like that again…its say alot about YOUR image…..

J, Yes…it is a unattractive dress. But the instructions were for you to comment on the dress not what you feel students in South Atlanta would wear. Because of this over-sexed society we live in, unfortunately, there are MANY young girls…north, south, east and west who wear things that are too revealing. I agree with you Nita, where were her parents??? Her mom needs her butt whipped along with the child.

This dress fits into the same category as kids who tattoo and pierce their entire body.

I think that the prom was not a place for that dress, and it did look a bit stripperish. But the comments that have been made have been so off the wall, Ok say the dress was ugly but calling her stupid, she is a child still she can only be taught by example. I am a mother and I try and teach my daughter better than that. I would have never agreed to buying the dress but you guys are coming from the angle taht because she is a black girl this is what she would have done anyway. One person said I could see students on the southside wearing this. My niece is an high school sophmore on the southside who also attends college and will have her AA degree when she graduates high school and we would never allow this so what are you saying. I am a black woman who went to a high school where 89% of the school was white and white girls can be just a hoochie and can speak just as stupid as one person commented. Just watch Jerry Springer. Blame the parents for her actions not the child. At least she is in school and is graduating lets talk about that not her prom dress ok she made a very big fashion no no but that she not have caused all of this. Pray for her not judge her in this way.

This poor child obviously has no classy role models in her life. This is what MTV and the media have done to kids. Prom is a CLASSY, SOPHISTICATED, FORMAL affair. I think the school systems need to make them take etiquette classes and read Emily Post.
They were right for denying her access to the problem but schools should be teaching these kids what is appropriate for a formal event.
My Jr. and Sr. prom were in 98 and 99 respectively. NO ONE at my high school wore such a skankified dress. NO ONE. Maybe because we all had class (and at a very diversified school thank you).

I do feel that the dress was too revealing however she is a teenager and that is the kind of limit pushing that teenager’s do. I don’t feel that it is right to keep a young girl from going to prom because someone didn’t like her outfit. If the school is going to be that strict they should have a day of dress approvals prior to the prom.

There is really no comment that is appropriate for that costume the poor, uneducated girl chose. I would be amazed if her mother even saw it. Of course, her mother could be as young as 30, also uneducated, and not recognize something inappropriate too. It is just sad that some of the young people today have fallen so far from acceptance. We, as a society, need to regain total control of these young people. It is obvious that their parents (if they have any) are not capable of performing the job. Exactly what avenue to pursue toward helping them is what perplexes me. They are certainly not educated, and graduating from high school? How?

I just saw the dress on the news, and there is no way on this earth would I let my daughter wear such a dress. She looked like she was about to perform on the pole at the prom. Were the heck was her mama at? Did she had the nerves to mention that she didn’t have on any underwear. The school shouldn’t reward her anything.
The school did just what they were suppose to do, and the fact of the cops coming was also deserved. The young lady acted so out of control that it her implications that caused the school to call the cops.
I feel bad for any parent that thinks that that dress was appropriate for any affair outside of climbing the poles. This young lady was asking for something to happening to her, and the fact that she didn’t have on any underwear was utterly ridiculous. It’s okay showing off your body, but you can do that without a napkin on.
Take a good look at yourself young lady and look how you just belittled yourself without anyone knowing you. I sure hate to see what she will be trying to wear to the graduation.

I can’t believe anyone has to ask if this dress is okay to wear and school officials obviously tried to get her to leave over and over and she kept refusing trying to make the dress somehow appropriate covering her belly button (but the top was the most skankish part) which is why she left in handcuffs. If school officials had physically tried to remove her, they would have gone to jail so they did what they had to do and rightly so.

Denise, most of us know “at risk” is a touchy-feely, politically correct euphemism for drug-addicted, belligerant teenage thugs & hookers-in-training. The reason teenage crime is so widespread these days is because bad deeds are rewarded, not punished. These kids don’t need “love”, they need to perform community service so they can learn hands-on how to turn their lives around. You can bet this girl with the trashy dress is in that category. No one with any self-respect would dress or act thusly

Did anyone else pause the clip and read the prom form that each student had to sign. It specifically states only one inch of midriff can show, and states that the violator and their date will not be allowed to enter if they don’t abide by the guidelines. It’s not like she wasn’t forewarned.

Instead of attacking the girl (who, by all accounts mistakenly believed she was in the right) let us look at the entire system. Most (not all) mothers look at their daughters, take pictures then send them off for a night of fun. Maybe her mother was at work, maybe she was passed out drunk. Either way, there is more than “She’s a ho” to be said here. Attacking her character for her choice in clothing? Does anyone realize what people thought of the teenagers in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, etc that chose to wear what they wore. You will always have people who cross the lines (and man did this dress cross it) but to suggest this 17 yo is “Nothing but a w**” goes a bit far. Teenagers make stupid fashion choices, sometimes parents even back them up, but before completely delegating her to a life of prostitution, consider there may be more to this story. I don’t believe most people with high self esteem need to show so much to so many. I think the saddest part to this is she doesn’t realize there are more ways to make an impact without taking it all off.

**THIS IS CRAZY. WE WONDER WHY OUR CHILDREN ARE FOOLISH. WE AS PARENTS ALLOW THEM TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES WITH NO CONTROL FROM US. OUR MOTHERS BACK IN THE DAY WOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOWED SUCH A TRAVAISTY. WE OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED AND EMBARRASSED THAT WE ALLOW OUR CHILDREN TO LOOK LIKE THIS. OUR RACE HAS ENOUGH ISSUES WITH OUT BEING EMBARRASSED BY SUCH FOOLISHNESS. WE NEED TO LEARN FROM STUPIDITY!!!! WE ARE TRYING TO BE A BETTER PEOPLE NOT GO FURTHER TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET. HER MOTHER NEEDS TO BE WHIPPED AND SO DOES HER CHILD. IF THE MOTHER WAS NOT THERE THEN SOMEONE NEEDS TO SPEAK TO HER ABOUT HER PARENTING SKILLS. THIS IS AWFUL AND DEGRADING. I JUST CAN’T EXPRESS ENOUGH. NOT TO MENTION HER DUMB TAIL READ THE FLYER THAT SAID THE ATTIRE WOULD BE CHECKED AT THE DOOR. SHE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN NOT TO WEAR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IF SHE HAD GOTTEN RAPED WEARING THAT THEN WE WOULD HAVE WANTED AL SHARPTON TO SHOW UP KNOWING IT WAS HER OWN FAULT FOR FALSE ADVERTISING. THIS IS AWFUL AND DEGRADING AND SAD, THAT SHE HAS NO SPIRITUALITY AND DOES NOT KNOW JESUS, BECAUSE IF SHE DID SHE WOULD RESPECT HER BODY MORE. NOT TO MENTION SHE HAS NO TRUE FRIENDS, BECAUSE TRUE FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS PICK UP UGLY, TRASHY, DISGUSTING DRESSES.

I am only two years out of high school and at our proms girls did push the boundaries on their dresses. But what I don’t get is why prom has gone from looking like a princess to looking like a stripper? Save that outfit for the club when you are trying to convince someone to go home with you, not at prom where everyone is already taken.
I also can’t imagine how she’ll feel as a parent showing her children her prom pictures. I can only pray that she isn’t still proud of her custom made draped fabric.
Class among my age group (I’m 20) is non-existent. When will these girls realize that you wont attract prince charming looking like a street walker? Cover up, leave something to the imagination. Save those clothes for the strippers and prostitutes.

Well, no one talks about gas prices anymore so we are left with stories such as: This girl and her raga-ma-tag prom dress, David A.’s father being banned from backstage on A Idol, Jenna B’s fairy tale wedding, etc.

The blonde girl, Ashleigh something from NHS, in the gold dress looked just as bad but at least it covered her. Why didn’t her friends let her know how bad it looked. Something right out of James Bonds “Goldmember”. Bless her heart.

Jo, I see that I am getting no where with this. When I use the term “”at risk”, I am referring to teens who are on the wrong path making the wrong choices that will have an adverse affect on their future. I’m sorry that you and your cronies only see “at risk” as poor, black kids. Believe it or not…and I’m sure you won’t, the majority of the kids I work with are black and white from upper middle to affluent neighborhoods. Parents are too busy making money to spend time with them. Gotta run. I hope you hae a good evening and get home safe.

This is down right pathetic. I wonder if she has any idea how ridiculous she looks? She’s probably too immature to get that the real joke is on her.
Too bad her parents, friends, someone didn’t care enough to stop her from making a complete fool of herself.

The lower the IQ the faster the insults come out. Only Denise reconized the the question was completely overlooked for the opportunity to put this girl (and her race) down. Bulldawg, you don’t need a reason to be racist, only an opportunity. It was a very unfortunate choice, made only to get her 3 minutes of fame in the headlines, more unfortunate there was not one to stop her.

Okay, will someone please explain to me why this needs some attention? This is pure trash and should probably be in some low budget film. She is clearly on her way to being a star….in a low budget film. She seem to have had a tongue ring when I was watching the video. Which leads me to believe she is a child being raised by a child with no guidance what so ever. A sane parent would never have given the okay to purchase a 1/4 of a yard of fabric for a dress in the first place. Custom made? By whom? Her mom, most likely. Joint effort of two peas in a pod.

Custom-made… must’ve been a shortage on cloth - times are bad folks! Anyway, I guess she didn’t want to take a date so she could be available for everyone else’s at prum? I hope she wasn’t planning on dancing or sitting for everyone else’s sake.

This girl was looking for attention. And she got it! She knew that she was breaking the rules. No telling what other rules she has already broken and will in the future. She steps way over the line of decency and does not really care. Now some idot will offer her a spot on some tv talk show and before you know it, she will be a celebrity because she dared to be different. The best way to handle that would have been to give her the prom money back and ride back home with a note to her parent(s) with the reason she was not allowed in the prom.

Denise, don’t waste your time. Ignorance is ignorance.
windywoman, you are 100% correct. She knew she was breaking the rules and she knew the end result would be media attention and she will probably make some money off of this some way some how. Her parents were probably in on it too.
She is clearly underdressed and she should have been thrown out and refunded her money and that would have been the end of that.
I think all of our kids are out of control…. black, white, hispanic, asian, etc. So please stop making everything about race and start with your own children.
BTW, the kids don’t get their hair combed anymore before the prom?? I’m just asking.

We all agree the dress is trashy but the fact that she admits to wearing no underwear as well leaves her open for all these negative comments. Thankfully the school turned her away along with a few STD’s that probably would have been spread around.

This young lady, and I use the term loosely looks ridiculous. She is neither sexy nor provocative; she just looks trashy. Its is so sad that in the era of the “video vixen”, young women have no barometer of what is and is not acceptable. There is a time and place for every type of attire, and unless this student plans on walking the strip on Metropolitan Parkway after the prom, which is surely what her attire suggests, this outfit is wholly inappropriate.

The dress was hideous, as many prom dresses are. The dress was inappropriate, as much of ignorant and immoral behaviour is.
Adults need to be adults and 1. teach their children to respect themselves (parents, teachers) 2. clearly state the rules ahead of time (school officials) 3. plan ahead with female chapparones with a replacement dress or two from goodwill (like for the size 16 cramed into a size 8) 4. male chapparones that are not afraid to calmly deal with the situation and NOT involve the police

Rick, I know a lot of people have a hard time reading but it seems you may have mis-heard what she said. If you go back and listen, she said that the teacher said that she wasn’t wearing under wear and the young lady replied that she was wearing underwear. As for the STD comment, please don’t think that because someone “looks” good on the outside, they can’t be burning on the inside…and vice versa. Watch out now!!!

I’m trying to understand why the called the police on her? She was already embarrassed by not being allowed into prom and by wearing that dress. I think that a more appropriate punishment would have been to make her go home and change. What people are not aware of is that there is a brand called Beverly Johnson Barely there dresses and it is all the craze among young prom goers. Hell many people try to imitate it and it goes sooooo wrong (as in the pic) but you can’t be mad at her for acting the only way she knows. Yes, indeed her parents or any other family member or friend needs to be placed in jail for setting this girl up for failure not just for prom but for life! I truly hope that this young girl turns her life around before she get a rude wake up call from the real world.

Police were called probably for her flippant attitude about it, the fact she was demanding her money back, and threatened to cause a scene (which is ironic). Her parents might not have known what she was walking out wearing, but who knows, I have seen worse things that parents have allowed their children to do, my ex-wife as an example. Permissive negligence is just as bad as permissive indulgence. I am sure there are some white chicks wearing just as revealing dresses in their upper-middle class proms in downtown Atlanta.

As a veteran high school teacher in a racially mixed high school, I am well aware that students will try to ‘push the envelope’ to see what they can get away with…We adults have to be firm in our boundaries so that teens can learn that life is for keeps and that consequences do follow inappropriate actions. This young lady knew exactly what she was doing and all of this publicity just adds fuel to the fire. It will be a very long time before she understands the ramifications of trying to break a dress code just so she can get noticed. As others have said, I feel pity for her and just want others to know that I feel the school was in their legal limit to deny her access. We have in fact denied access to girls or even duct taped their dresses closed before even considering letting them in the prom or other formal event.

I feel sorry for this young lady she obviously had no one in her life to guide her, like a father who takes time with a daughter to show her the do’s and don’ts, she obviously didn’t have a mother who knew any better as well so who do we cast the blame. I think maybe they should have let her go to the prom because the stares and how people would have talked about her would let her know this is something not appropriate. I would not have let my daughter cross the threshold with that on, but as I said where was the father and where is the mother, she has not once come forward in this story, it’s on you tube several radio shows and made it to the AJC and not one comment from her mother. So I don’t blame her I blame the mother, I blame the school for not giving guide lines on how to dress for this afair by letting them know what is allowed and what’s not. I hope she gets herself together and I hope her mother if not too late will get involved in her daughters life to make her understand you have to leave something to be desired. You don’t have to show everthing you have.
