How do you make fitness part of your routine?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Fitness guru Denise Austin recently shared her tips for looking great and staying fit.
All it takes is 30 minutes a day, said Austin, who is fit and fabulous at 51.
“People think they have to go to the gym for two hours, but all you need is 30 minutes if you’re consistent,” said Austin, who has more than 80 DVDs and 10 books. She incorporates yoga, Pilates, cross-training and aerobic exercise in her workout plan.
“Consistency is key, and it pays off.”
What are your tips to stay fit? Do you walk? Take the stairs at work? How often to you exercise?

I bike to work. It takes 20 minutes each way. I do it rain or shine and bring a change of clothes in my saddlebags.

I make my own lunch and eat at my desk, so I can go to the gym (2 x miles away) 4-5 days a week. I get up in the morning at 6 and jog 3 miles every other day and in the office by 8. When I get off at 6, I play tennis twice a week and then ALTA on weekends. My wife does the same, with the exception of the 3 miles. The kids are old enough that they don’t need us holding their hand all the time and we have Family Dinner (m wife and I cook) on Monday and Wednesday. Most people don’t work out because it’s not important enough to them and they don’t MAKE time for it. You have to do that and make choices. Instead of eating out, partying all the time or think you need to hover over your children 24/7, you use that time to get fit. It’s a matter of CHOICE and the results are better fitness, losing weight and increasing your libido dramatically (Yes, we are regular with that, as well.)

I have a walking partner. We have walked together for years, four miles in one hour/five days a week. She keeps me honest! I get my workout done first thing in the morning, that way I can’t put it off.
After my walk, while I’m still hot and sweaty, I do situps/crunches out on my patio. I love to be outside. Then I stretch thoroughly. Like I said, the walk takes an hour, the crunches and stretching adds another 10 minutes or so, but I never regret spending that 70 minutes on myself. Also, I cook for myself and my husband. We rarely go out. I love to cook and experiment.

I schedule my workouts in my calendar as if they are appointments — not to be cancelled unless there is an emergency. I treat them the same way as I would a business meeting or a doctor’s appointment. If someone asks me to do something during the time period I’ve blocked in a workout, all I need to say is,”I’m sorry but I have a conflict.” We need to give our physical health the same priority that we give to other essential things in our lives.
