What makes a great sports bar?

What…a simple burger and a glass of tap beer isn’t good enough for you Atlanta sports fans anymore?

Now you need a sommelier to make wine pairing suggestions and some organic arugula on your plate in order to enjoy a sports bar experience?

Upscale pubs where people gather to dine and perhaps gaze up at the games playing on Hi-Def TV monitors are sprouting up all around town. But is the gentrification of sports bars being taken too far?

If time-worn sports memorabilia, peanut shell-littered floors, bad manners, fast food and second-hand smoke don’t define a truly great sports bar, what does?

Sound off, and let us know what you look for in a sports bar and where you prefer to go out and watch games.

Taco Mac in Dunwoody is still my favorite…over 300 cold beers, lots of TV’s, hot wings and burgers, good service, clean bathrooms, and good looking waitresses = Excellent sports bar.

Nick … I gotta disagree. Jocks and Jills was horrific. They would blare the Falcons game all over the place, even though no one there came to watch the Falcons. (You can watch them at home.) The best bars are ones that are in tune with what people are wanting to watch. Taco Mac in the Highlands, although small, does a pretty good job.

TV set ups is crucial for a sports bar. Next is management of tv’s. If a location has it set up where you can see three to four of them pretty well where those sets have different games, you have a good place. Also, if you have to tell an establishment to change a channel from a syndicated rerun or CNN to an actual game, they are awful. They should be the experts, not the paying customer.

I live in Brookhaven and that Hudsons has potential but is not very good. Food is average and they ought to promote their desserts since that is the only thing good other than the beer. Also, they have light fixtures hanging from the rafters that block the view of tv’s. What idotic clown came up w/ that idea. I will atleast give them credit on football weekends where they label each tv w/ the games they are showing on it in advance. Atleast someone there knows how to think.

Taco Mac in the Highlands and Lindburg is pretty good, but they are pricey.

Taco Mac Dunwoody is my favorite hangout too, and Stats is a welcome addition to the evolving downtown area. But Pittsburgh Freddy calls attention to (3 times) the new player that deserved a mention in this article - Hudson Grille. They’ve just opened a new location in the front of Perimeter Mall, rebranding the space where Garrison’s used to be. Kept the nice walnut/cherry decor, but brought in dozens of hi-def screens, a wide-ranging menu, and a good range of quality brews.

What does it take? Low tv to customer ratio. Bartenders who keep your drinks full. Decent food. Doesn’t have to be fine cuisine. Familiarity with a good number of the other patrons. I hate going to a great sports bar where I know nobody.

My choice… well I’m not gonna tell ya cuz I’d like to keep the traffic down.

TJ’s in Roswell defines the term sports bar and lives out the definition everday. Places like Stats and ESPN don’t have a clue when it comes to providing an ideal environment for people who love to watch sports. The people who run the place know what the average hopeless sports junkies like me are really looking for.

Have a ton of TVs with multiple sports (& games) especially during football season. Taco Maco is great for beer selection and TV’s but don’t carry UFC/MMA events. Whereas Hooters has the UFC for “free”, but doesn’t have enough TV’s. For sports bars, the keys are lots of TVs for multiple games/sports, lots of beer (especially draft) & decent food variety.

I used to attend a sports bar in Boothbay Harbor,Maine where on a Friday the clientele were all in their 60’s and 70’s.The owner was allowed to keep the tv’s on but without sound.Everyone talked and drank and had a good time.Local musicians were hired and paid for by the patrons. Some were good ,some were lousy.Let me repeat:everyone had a good time.Best sports bar I was ever in.

As far as I’m concerned, a “sports bar” isn’t a “sports bar” until they actuall provide access to sports. So many times I’ll go into a SB and see all the TVs tuned to 3 - 4 channels (except for NFL Sundays). I admit they do shell out the $$ for the NFL Ticket but what about MSG network or NESN, ESPNU or FSN (pick any city). None of these so called “sports bars” ever pay for/show the regional sports provided by the other sports packages (MLB, NHL, NBA, Direct TV). If I want to see the Indians play the Red Sox or the Dodgers play the Diamondbacks and it isn’t nationally televised, for the most part and for almost all these SBs that I go to - I am SOL. And you call yourself a “sports bar” - pathetic!

My vote goes to Tj’s off Holcomb Bridge. Just looking at some of the names that are being tossed around makes me chuckle as what people consider a sports bar. Dantana’s?? how bout calling that a restaurant that has tv’s. Being a 39 year old native Atlantan, I was here for a lot of them. Yes, I remember Dirty Al’s in SS. TJ’S puts out a consistently GOOD product every time. And they show ALL the sports ALL time. Pay per view fights, wrestling, UFC, hockey, golf, all the other staples as NFL, MLB, NBA. with sound-thats a sports bar! Hard to argue with 18 years (i think) of success! BTW, best steak sanwhich in the city!

I agree there are no great sports bars in Atlanta. They all seem too commercialized to me. However, Taco Mac at Lindbergh does a decent job. It’s much bigger than the one in the Highlands. I especially like the tvs that hang int he middle so you can see one from every angle. While I like Dantannas I think it’s more of a stuffy restaurant than a sports bar. Plus their bar area never seems big enough for hanging out.

sports bars are horrible in the ATL. They either dont change the channel fast enough after a game has gone off or they are showing american idol or its ilk. This is a sports bar. B4 they closed Chicago Pizza on Buford Hwy was great. plenty of TV’S including big screens good food and a nice amount of eye candy.

ESPN Zone in Buckhead gets my vote. They have recently made wholesale changes including a next generation HD Projector for their 16ft. Big Screen in the main room. You can’t beat a place that has that many games available with little to no wait time and an affordable (for Buckhead) menu of good food. We were there for the EURO 08 tournament and the crowd reminded me of crowds that are usually reserved for NFL Sundays. Overall I like ESPN Zone more than the pretentious sports bars that seem to be cropping up all over the city.

You need decent food, decent drinks and plenty of TV’s showing your game. And it should not be a chain. That’s what makes it special. The Sports Cafe in Jonesboro has it all. First of all, Taco Mac isnt a Sports Bar, its a yuppie, geek hangout for metro’s who drink imported beer and wear starched polo button downs! That type goes there hoping to pick up some money grubbing fatty loud mouth chick, who come in in such large numbers you cant even hear the game over thier cackling !!! Taco Mac SUCKS.

We used to go to Barnacle’s on Jimmy Carter, years ago. We would take the Sunday Paper, and go sit for hours. They had a great game room, and I would give my daughter about $10 in quarters so she could go play. Unfortunately those days are over. We moved too far away to go there anymore……

Once in a while, I like to go to The Derby in Sugar Hill. But more often, I’m at home with friends or at a friends house……..Sunday is for football, friends, drinking and cooking.

Ha Scott has to work for ESPN, everything in his post is the opposite of reality, (except maybe the upgrades) anyway, obviously you need many tvs, complete game coverage, cold beer, and not just a good looking but fun staff. Duh. The next requirement is no kids allowed, period, if you want to bring your kids go to applebees, I love the beer selection at taco mac but its more of a restaurant, (see kids caveat). I like benchwarmers at clairmont and briarcliff, if it weren’t so smokey it would be perfect (of course then there would be kids) and don’t get on me about the kid thing I love kids, just not in a bar

Tidefan, you are correct, Taco Mac is NOT a sports bar. You can hardly hear a thing, even when they turn the volume up because of the young, young clientele that go there to drink and get loud. It is, indeed, a hangout for the suburban yupsters, especially those with kids in tow. I’d love to find a good sports bar where 1) the staff serves females as well as males, and 2) you can view a multitude of games simultaneously. Trying to get an ACC basketball game on TV in a so-called sports bar in this state is like pulling teeth. You’d never know GA Tech was in in the ACC. Well, I suppose over the last 3 years they haven’t shown up well. As a female, I can’t tell you the times I’ve left a sports bar aboiut as soon as I’ve sat down because of being ignored as a type of alien.

For those nominating TJ’s: the night of the 1st Stanley Cup Finals game, anyone wanting to watch it (and this is allegedly the Red Wing hangout in town), got shoved to the small bar area because a band took up all the big bar area. Sorry, ATL is one of the worst towns for a sports bar. STATS-overrated, crowded, overly expensive. Taco Macs all smell like stale alcohol. ESPN Zone is fine, but usually, you cannot find a decent seat and service is mediocre.

North River Tavern in Sandy Springs gets my vote. They have as many beer choices as Taco Mac and you can watch all the Pay Per View events for free. Dogpound @ 3:46 - LOL! Yeh, Olde Towne in Kennesaw does have some good “eye candy” indeed. Hooters does too, but the food isn’t that good (although I don’t go to sports bars for the cuisine ;-). Being an MMA fan, I like that Hooters does have the UFC for “free”. Other places carry the UFC events too, but charge a cover…that’s bogus for what they rack up on brew & liquor during those events. Boogey’s in Woodstock is fair-plus, but they too charge for UFC (although the waitresses are “well-endowed”). Taco Mac has lots of TVs & good brew selection…get’cha pull! ;-)

PS. As the previous address of an e-mail has been removed also all letters on it have been lost I is compelled to make this dispatch once again. PS2. To send url your site on an e-mail stop.web.spam@gmail.com is a unique way to avoid a spam from me. To write abuses to the various “stop spam” sites - it is useless. PS3. Your addresses of an e-mail are not necessary to me, you can create an e-mail through free service and send me yours url through this e-mail PS4. sorry for my bad English :)

hi all. One of the lessons of history is that nothing is often a good thing to do and always a clever thing to say. I am from Iran and now study English, tell me whether I wrote the following sentence: “Advanced poker software, casino software and sports betting gambling software provider.”

Waiting for a reply :o, Kaili.
