Embrace the season with a couple of holiday offerings, or just go about your non-festive business with a little classic progressive rock.

TODAY’S PICK

Theatrical Outfit’s “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” is a retelling, set in a vintage 1940s radio studio, of the Frank Capra holiday film classic. AJC theater critic Wendell Brock called last year’s production a “delightful spin on a favorite chestnut,” pronouncing it “wondrous, featherlight, full of joy.” 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays; 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Dec. 3-21. $30. Balzer Theater at Herren’s, 84 Luckie St. N.W., Atlanta. 678-528-1500.

WEEKEND HAPPENING

The show that’s being billed as Howe, Squire and White of Yes includes only three-fifths of the band that came through on the 35th anniversary tour in 2004 (Rick Wakeman and the ailing Jon Anderson), but that might be enough for the diehards. Filling in for the missing musicians are Oliver Wakeman (yes, he’s Rick’s son) and vocalist Benoit David.

When Yes went vocalist-shopping for a temporary replacement for Anderson, the band took a cue from fellow frontman seekers Judas Priest and Journey. Like those bands, the three remaining Yes-men recruited David from a tribute band. David had been singing in Montreal outfit Close to the Edge since 1994.

It was popular to dismiss Yes for many years as pretentious twaddle, and some of the band’s catalog undoubtedly qualifies (“Tormato” was just embarrassing). But when Yes was at its peak, progressive rock didn’t get much better. “Fragile” (1971) and “Close to the Edge” (1972) are flashy, complex, melodic and among the essential albums in the genre. 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7. $56.50-$66.50. The Tabernacle, 152 Luckie St. N.W., Atlanta. 404-659-9022, 404-249-6400.

LOOKING AHEAD

“The Play of Herod” is a 12th-century liturgical drama about the journey of the three kings, the birth of Jesus and King Herod’s slaughter of the innocents. It became a local tradition during its original 25 year run in Atlanta from 1974 to 1999. Director Kelly Morris took a break from staging the show for several years, finally bringing it back in 2004. This year, the production moves to St. Bartholomew’s. Reservations required. 8:30 p.m. Dec. 12-13. $20; $15 senior citizens and students. St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 1790 LaVista Road N.E., Atlanta. 404-377-6493.

*I am tired of living in a world with people who play at being Christians. They will lie and cheat to advance their hidden agendas. They will not be “adult enough or Christian enough” to admit when they are wrong. They will list all the things they have done for the church in an effort to boost their weak egos. They will threaten the minister and staff with non-payment of their pledges if they do not get their way. They will use the scripture to “justify” their spurious inferences and fallacies. They make countless excuses not to follow the rules and procedures. Some will act as if they are above the rules. They have no respect for personal and professional boundaries. They will display a public face to the minister and staff then email lies and employ deceptive tactics to exact their revenge. They will feign to be a “victim” if they are not treated like Jesus Christ. They will consider you unsympathetic and heartless if you are not a bleeding heart liberal who espouses to the “anything goes attitude” of life. They never want the poor to forget who “saved and rescued” them for it makes their hearts shine. They will take a pound of flesh and suck the blood out of someone who made the mistake of trusting them in his time of need i.e. Kenny. Kenny knows now he is a slave for life to his good Christian rescuers. They will disseminate gossip and fuel animosity within the church. They speak with forked tongues. They will treat people with disrespect and expect the individuals to be oblivious to their rudeness. They want someone to stroke their egos to the detriment of the church’s business. They want you to coddle them when they project negativity. They want you to be their shrink, minister and loyal confidante if they are having a bad day or feeling insecure. They will smile in your face and stab you in the back.

These are children of God? You are all pretenders. Your egos and filthy ways tarnish the good so many do within the church.

May you start acting like real Christians in 2009. None of us is perfect including myself but you few have no CONSCIENCE and a couple of you no SOUL.* * Beverley Elliott Barbara Douglas Chip Dukes Marla Gearing (a major nutcase) Paul Nix Meredith Smith John Sumrall and a few others know who they are…*
