It isn’t all holiday themed entertainment this time of year, even though it may seem that way. Here are some offerings that will keep the December shopping blues at bay.

TODAY’S PICK

“The Sound of Music,” the tuneful and touching Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, concerns a misfit nun-turned-governess who charms a widowed naval captain and his seven children. The 1965 film version, starring Julie Andrews, became one of the most successful and beloved movie musicals of all time. Sing-along performances on Sundays and Dec. 24 and 26. 8 p.m. Saturdays and Dec. 11, 17, 18 and 23; 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays. Through Dec. 28. $24-$35. Presented by Center Theatre in the Morris & Rae Frank Theatre, 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody. 678-812-4002.

WEEKEND HAPPENING

Tennis anyone? The second annual Infinite Energy Atlanta Slam is coming to the Gwinnett Arena on Dec. 13. The big events are a doubles showdown pitting the Bryan Brothers (Bob and Mike) against the Jensen Brothers (Luke and Murphy) and Sam Querrey (ranked No. 39 in the world by ATP) taking on James Blake (currently ranked No. 10 in the world). Between those two matches, catch a performance by “American Idol” contestant and former Atlanta resident Michael Johns, who once received a tennis scholarship to Tifton’s Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College. The event is a benefit for the Georgia Tennis Foundation. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the brotherly showdown begins at 7 p.m. $29.75-$200; ages 1 and younger free. Gwinnett Arena, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth. 770-813-7600, 404-249-6400.

LOOKING AHEAD

Collective Soul is still a going concern, but frontman Ed Roland takes the occasional solo jaunt. His band’s latest album, “Afterwords,” was reissued on Dec. 9 with three new solo tracks from Roland. On Dec. 20 and 21, the Buckhead resident will be doing solo performances in the intimate music room at Eddie’s Attic. Doors opens at 6:30 p.m. and the shows start at 8 p.m. Individual tickets are $40, front-of-the-room tables are $300 and other tables are $200 (buying one table admits four). 515-B N. McDonough St., Decatur. 404-377-4976.
