2/20: Mario Vazquez is back (who?)

Remember Mario Vazquez, known heretofore, as “the quitter.” Last year, the quitter was about to make the final 12 but then inexplicably dropped out, giving Nikko Smith a new lease on life. The quitter never gave a clear reason why he cut out. Theory is he didn’t want to go through the work necessary to win, that he wanted to just use the month-long exposure he got from “Idol” at that point to get a record deal. In one sense, he got his wish: Clive Davis’s J Records signed him. His album comes out next month, according to www.people.com.

“It’s a mix of what I’ve grown up listening to. It’s a bit of Latin, a bit of R&B and soul, old Motown but reinvented for now,” the quitter told People magazine at a recent party in L.A. for J Records honcho Clive Davis.

Inexplicably, he tells People that the current semifinalists should “stay on the show as long as you can. It’s 35 million viewers every week. Take advantage of that.”

Gee… thanks, quitter! Maybe he’s now worried that nobody will remember him, much less buy his record? For your amusement, People magazine misspelled his name. Ah… sweet justice. It only makes you hope for great success for Nikko…

Mario will wish he had of stayed on Idol. He can sing, but he does’nt have the audience to put out a record. Is he R&B? Pop? Latin? Should have stayed on Idol to get more exposure. Also, he was on Idol 2 years ago. I am sure the few people who saw him have now forgot about him.

Wow, one of those times when you root for the underdog, right? Nah, who cares about your album, you quit, thinking you were already the star…..here’s hoping Nikko puts out some good product and outsells you! Thanks for those links to the Taylor songs….have a GOOD FRIEND that burned them for me. They will provide some good songs to listen to when I head down to Disney World. Yup, I leave in 2 days, so sorry, some of you will have to live without my witty repartee for 5 days….

Mario has an excellent voice. And I thought Nikko Smith did very well I wish great success for both of these young men. As for not having an audience I had never heard of Heather Headley befor her album or this guy Chris Brown who seems to be doing very well for himself with sales. Stop hating whatever his reasons for leaving they were valid enough for him. If he has no talent we’ll see in the mean time spread some love. Peace

Hi, This is off vazquez related. I was just wondering why Ricky Hayes of Bedford Texas didn’t make it to the final 24. He’s good. Did he ever go to Hollywood?

If Clive is into Mario, he’ll get plenty of publicity and assistance. Clive does not pick up mediocre people. He goes after only those who he thinks have identifiable voices and star quality. I thought Mario’s choice to leave was rather dumb as well, but then what do I know?! I voted for the loser three out of four Idol years.

By Shaun

February 20, 2006 11:14 AM | Link to this

Yes I agree Clive is the man, but wasn’t he behind Justin also? He flopped. Clive is not King Midas, yes he did Whitney and others, but he has also done some serious flops. Remember Diana Degarmo?

Well, you are correct, Shaun, that no one is perfect, especially when it comes to picking talent, but Clive’s track record is extraordinary, and he is also very adept at backing away from those people who disappoint him early on.

It is my understanding that he has some contractual obligations to some of the final folks on Idol, but I’d be real surprised if he let it be written in his contract that he is absolutely bound to assist any of those chosen by the public any more than he decides he wants to. You will note that he is not equally supportive of all the winners.

Yes Shaun, I rmemeber Diana Degarmo, she is co-staring on Broadway in Hairspray. See if Mario ever has that opportunity, ah..hmm…NO.

While Mario never gave a definitive reason for why he dropped out, I was under the impression that the main reason is that reports began to surface that he was gay such as this. God forbid someone on idol be open about who they are…

PULEEZE!! I remember Mario..the boy had the best VOICE that i’d heard on Idol since it’s inception. And he did not sing anybody else’s stuff, he did orginal material from the opening gate…that set him apart, so it didn’t matter if her stayed on Idol..he was going to get a deal. I think he did Nikko a favor becasue Nikko could not sing a complete song in key..only people who like music as ahobby won’t remember Mario….you see Clive Davis didn’t, huh? Now ya’ll put the cap back on that gallon of haterade!!

By achin4aiken

February 20, 2006 12:34 PM | Link to this

Being gay seems to be the first standard explanation everyone grabs these days when trying to discredit or embarrass any public figure or celebrity. Mud slinging is mud slinging, and anyone involved gets dirty - those taking aim as well as the people being talked about. Besides, not only would I give that a large WHO CARES, but what does it say about the people writing the stories. The writer of the article you sited, John, has no more credibility than you or me yet we pass it on as if it was important reading. I realize that you are sympathetic to the silliness of such an accusation, but by forwarding the link, you forward the stupidity.

Well, If all of you remember Mario I’m pretty sure other do as well. He’s obviously still interesting enough to get even this bit of publicity and all of you obviously took the time to post comments here about him. I thought he was very talented and by leaving Idol he may have escaped being just a “regular Ol’ pop star”. Yeah Kelly Clarkson got a Grammy or 2, but so did Milli Vanilli, Young MC and Paula Abdul! Go Mario!

Shaun,

My are you so angry at this guy. it was his right to quite and it obviously was the best choice for him. What did you bet that he would win or something. A lot of people Kelly Clarkston included have complained about the idol contrat and all the things they were made to do after they won that they didn’t want to do. So get over it.

By Shaun

February 20, 2006 01:51 PM | Link to this

Believe me, I am certainly not angry with Mario! I agreed that he could sing, just didn’t think he should have left so early. Get your facts straight before you try to judge my words!

Why is it always ” stop the hating…or give up the hateraid” if anyone, God forbides, says anything negative about a person who is not white, but everyone can get up and blast Carrie Underwood and no one says a thing. Case in point, the idiot, obnoxious, criminal twins that got arrested for identity and truck theft, they blasted her on TV…all because she sings country and most blacks don’t like country music. Where’s the cheerleading squad telling them to stop the hate. Underwood will go on to have a great career, and the twins..well maybe Clayton County Jail will hold American Prison Idol and they can get into that.

Sean Please don’t try to convert this topic into a racial debate. No one here mentioned anything about him being black, white, or green. Why is it that people on this board like to bring up the race card, and then run and sit back to watch the rest of the fools fall in behind with him/her to please your sick demise. This has nothing to do with race so just shut up and be quiet. NO one said anything to defend Carrie Underwood because she is one of the idols who we will not hear from in a long while because she has no talent so get over it.

FYI: Carrie Underwoods CD is double platimun, not bad for no talent. Her single has been number 1 on the charts for 11 weeks, not bad for no talent. Soforeal, bigots come in all colors. Want proof, go look in the mirror. You don’t have anyone fooled.

February 20, 2006 03:52 PM | Link to this

Sean go get a life and Mike why don’t you take that same mirror and watch you and Sean play with yourselves while listening to Carrie’s double platinum CD. You will probably get more excitement out of her music that way.

Carrie Underwood has no talent? She has been # 1 on both Billboard & R&R Country Charts for 5 consecutive weeks (still there) and her album has been # 1 on Billboard Country Albums Chart for about 10 weeks now. I know you don’t have to have talent to hit # 1 but it does take it to stay there that long. Just because she don’t sing your style of music does not mean she does not have talent.

By Soforeal

February 20, 2006 04:02 PM | Link to this

Any girl who looks like Carrie winning a show that constantly gives praise to RNB/Soul music is destined to stay at the number one spot for a while man this is America. Those charts are just as rigged as this pathetic idol show. Sounds like you are just as illiterate as she is “just because she don’t sing your type of music”…umm, it’s DOESN’T. Thats the word you were aiming for. Maybe you can teach Carrie a thing or two now so she can have a legitimate deal this time.

By Mitch

February 20, 2006 04:07 PM | Link to this

Personally, I would would rather hear finger nails on a black board than hear Fantasia sing another note but I do not say she is not talented. It is not my style of music. If you think the show is so rigged, then quit watching it. Also, we haven’t seen you on stage or selling CD’s. Are you just jealous thy are and you are not?

By Sean

February 20, 2006 04:29 PM | Link to this

Soforeal, Carrie has been taught to have a legitimate career. Teach Fantasia to have a legitiate baby. Another unwed mother from the hood, wow…how far do you have to go to see that, from where you live? Don’t miss your bus because of BLOGS.

By Soforeal

February 20, 2006 04:34 PM | Link to this

Take your racial comments elsewhere and make sure it’s not your own stank mama i see peeking out the Marta window looking over my 03 BMW while in traffic. Give Carrie a few years before she gets knocked up by some RNB/Rap artist and have some mixed babies for you all to talk about in a few years. We all know the latter race is definitely NOT packing in that dept most of the women are now getting to see the BIGGER picture.

Sean, the comments that you are making are very ignorant on your behalf. “another unwed mother from the hood” huh, well it appears to me that she is doing “pretty darn well for herself”. Have your fun now but by the time “our black men” go through “y’ll white..mexican women”…I hope you then realize how many unwed mothers are within your own race. Yes there are some ignorant people in each race, some just disguise it better than others…functioning crackheads…sexually active at the age 9…oral sex giving but still a virginity having …dishing it out just to cross the border….abortion having…STD spreading…etc etc. Well I think I have said enough…have fun with this thought. Try not to think too hard…wouldn’t want you to turn red in the face in front of your co-workers:-) God loves you and so do I.

Sean, you are stupid! yes Carrie did sell 2 million CD’s, but that is not hard for a country artist. Anyone who puts out a country album sells millions. Do you homework. Don’t degrade Fantasia, she has pulled herself up and is riding high my friend.

Um, I thought we were talking about Mario Vazquez. Quite interesting to see what happens in blogs in Atlanta, cant ever stay on the topic… Ya’ll, all it takes is time to see if Mario can even sell 1,000 Cd’s. Who here is really going to go out and buy it? I wont. I have Carrie’s, Kelly’s and even Bo Bice’s CD, but I’m not wasting my money on Mario.

I leave you all for 1/2 a day and look what happens. Good grief, children!

Sean, this was your fault. You started it by misconstruing every post, then turning the entire discussion on a racial dime. Plain and simple. I think you owe ALL of us, not just the black contributors, an apology.

Frankly, I won’t dignify today’s rants any further. As RR said, this was supposed to be a discussion of Mario Vasquez and his exit from the Idol stable. Let’s keep on topic tomorrow.

Someone may have corrected the error; I only read a few of these. Mario was on the show last year with Carrie, not two years ago with Fantasia. And there are lots of single, unwed mothers from the suburbs and the penthouses these days too!!!!
