2/21: Pip Pip Hooray!

It’s time for the rankings, ladies’ edition! Overall, the pool of 12 girls is better than last year. And there were at least four great performances. And none were complete disasters.

With two hours, “Idol” has time to do more bio on each contestant and for the first time, in their own words. That’s good and especially helps the women who didn’t get much airtime early on. Let’s rank’em from best to worst (Top six in the main entry body, the rest in the “extended entry” portion) I start with my immediate thoughts before I hear the judges, then I provide some of their thoughts.

My crack prediction for the two to go: Stevie Scott and Heather Cox. But don’t take my word for it. My track record last year was fairly miserable. In the final 12, I could usually name two of the bottom three but for eight straight weeks failed to predict the person to be voted off. It was embarrasing. Let’s see if I can do better this year.

  1. Paris Bennett (Gladys Knight & the Pip’s “Midnight Train to Georgia”) — She’s representing Georgia! And I’m not just giving her hometown props. She was joyous and fun, had me on my feet. Her choreography/dancing background helped. I loved the 70’s flip hairstyle, too. Wow! That was one of the best performances in “Idol” history. “We got a hot one America!” Randy said. “Looks like you’ve been doing this all your life.” “You’re my Idol,” Paula said. “You are a showwoman!” Simon: It’s very interesting. You come in 17, showed what you have to do well in this competition. It’s a performance everyone is going to remember… the likability factor. It’s not about being good. It’s about being great. That was great.”

  2. Lisa Tucker (“I Am Changing” Jennifer Holliday)— This gal is 16? She’s a showstopper! Bravo!!! Standing o’ and all that good stuff! “You probably chose one of the biggest and most ambitious songs of the night,” Randy said. “It started a little rough but you worked it out in the end.” Paula: “You are this precious little gift. You light this fire inside my heart and are poised and your’e 16 and you have this gift… you are a star.” Simon: “You made girls who are five or six years older look ordinary. That’s what it’s all about. You have the potential with your career and we look back at this, this is the night we’ll remember Lisa Tucker.” True, true.

  3. Katharine McPhee (Barbra Streisand’s “Since I Fell For You”) —She is one of those vocal gymnastics gals that I often find annoying. But she has a fine texture to her voice and she didn’t overdo it this time. What a range! She won me over. Go figure! Randy: “I always love your voice. You are one of the natural talents… You got it going on.” Paula: “This was a great performance. You gave your all. You own the stage. Everything about you was fantastic. I think you’ll be going all the way.” Simon: “There were four very good vocalists. You were the best.”

  4. Mandisa (Heart’s “Never”) She rocked! Great song choice! Not predictable at all. “It shows you have personality,” Randy said. “You overdid it just a little bit.” “You were phenomenal,” Paula said. “It wasn’t a perfect vocal,” Simon said. “However, you have an unbelievable personality. You have thrown down the gauntlet to the other 11 girls. We’ll see you all the way to the finals of the show.”

  5. Becky O’Donohue(Patti Smith’s “Because the Night”)— She picked a song suited to her lower registers. She started strong, weakened a bit midway but I liked it overall. She has spunk and a fine intensity. She could almost be on “Rock Star.” “I love the performance,” Randy said. “You don’t have to have the best voice but I liked the whole thing.” Paula: “Your charm is your pixie dust. But being realistic, there were notes that were off during the song. You guys all have to remember you don’t have to overperform.” Simon: “Slightly better than what I expected to be honest with you. Visually you are a 10. Voice is a 6 and a half. That last note was so off. I don’t think quite good is good enough for Idol 5. You’ve got to be great. There are probably five or six girls amongst this 12 are great. It was just okay.”

  6. Kellie Pickler (Martina McBride’s “How Far”) This sweet gal picked a really tough song. She was pitchy at times and she just barely pulled off the chorus. She did okay, ended well. “I still feel a little nerves hitting the high notes,” Randy said. “It was good.” Paula: “You’re unpretentious. You don’t have the diva attitude… I think on the chorus you sang your heart out. But you have to carry the song through on the verses.” Simon, who clearly likes Kellie: “You have the likability factor… It felt heartfelt and sincere. That’s what we always like. You’re not a stage school monster… I thought you did very well.” “I’m just glad to be here,” Kellie said gleefully.

7— Kinnik (pronounced ki-NEEK) Sky (Oleta Adams’ “Get Here”) — Brings back memories of one of Justin Guarini’s better performances in 2002. Her voice isn’t nearly as light as Adams. She clearly showed off her theater vocals. But for some reason it didn’t blow me away. It was very good but compared to Lisa Tucker, Mandisa and Paris, not quite there. “Choosing those stylized songs, you’re always compared to who sung it originally. The middl ewas really rough. You brought it home at the end. I have to give it a 6.” “Sharp notes, a few. So what. Your performance was powerful. Your showmanship was on point. I thought you did a lovely job,” Paula said. Simon: “We have seen one or two quite stunning performances from very young girls. We’ve gone incredible young talent. With somebody like you who is 28 years old. You’re very elegant, very regal. It was very cabaret… You’re being overshadowed by the young pretenders.”

8— Melissa McGhee (Faith Hill’s “When the Lights Go Down”) — The pageant gal says with the “Idol” contestants, “it’s a big family.” Uh huh. I’m not familiar with this particular tune. She has an interesting huskiness to her voice and definitely enough heft to it as well. The song is a snoozer. She was good, not incredible, definitely in the middle of the pack overall. “Started a little rocky, but I like that you worked it out,” Randy said. “It didn’t quite come together.” Paula: “I thought this was a shining moment for you. You have a sexy sultry voice.” Simon: “I’m somewhere in the middle here. Before you sang tonight, I would not have remembered you… You’re a bit lifeless when you sing. That worries me. You sang it well. “

9— Ayla Brown (Christina Aguilera’s “Reflections”) - This really is a lame Disney song. I wasn’t impressed with her from her initial audition but she was far better than I expected. Still she isn’t all that distinctive. “I didn’t expect it to be that good,” Randy said. “I was pleasantly surprised.” Paula: “I totally agree with you. That is a very ambitious undertaking. What I really enjoyed is you made it your own song and showed vulnerability.” Simon: “I think you’re probably a hard worker. There’s a limit to where your voice can go. We discovered that toward the end… For the first time for me, I saw some emotion… one of your better performances.” “I felt amazing!” she exclaimed.

10— Brenna Gethers (Stevie Wonder’s “You are the Sunshine of My Life”) The drama queen opts to go understated (like Mikalah tried a couple of times last year). Subtlety is not her strong suit. She plays to the cameras well but the performance felt kind of blah. What happened? “You chose a very safe song,” Randy said. “For me, I gotta keep seeing the girl with attitude… Be who you are. Paula: “Humility and a little bit of humble pie. There is a sensitive side that redeemed you.” Simon: “I don’t think you need to eat any humble pie. That’s what we like about you. That was horrible. Completely and utterly. You’re like a wild little cat. Somebody just put gloves on you. Everything we liked about you just evaporated.” She promises the claws to be out if she makes it. She will. She poses in the most irritating manner. Makes Constantine seem like a modest fella.

11— Heather Cox (The Idols’ “When You Tell Me That You Love Me”) She says she loves the show “like a stalker.” Hmmm… I wouldn’t know, would I? Her vocals are rather ordinary. The power notes were not that powerful, either. Not bad, just not good enough to get into the finals. She looks like a more innocent Jenny McCarthy. “It was kind of really boring,” Randy said. “I wanted to hear you go for it. It was kind of pitchy. It didn’t work for me tonight.” Paula: “I have to agree with Randy. It sounded reall rough… This was not a great performance.” Simon: “It was forgettable. You sang it like someone taking an elocution lesson.”

12— Stevie Scott (Josh Groban’s “To Where You Are”) - The opera girl strives to be the girl version of Groban. Not my type of song. Fairly subtle and difficult at the same time. Her voice is okay but a bit thin in the falsetto compared to some of her peers. She could be in trouble. “That was really difference,” Randy said. “It didn’t capture my attention at all.” Paula said: “I disagree. I felt it was very brave of you to take on that and be very ethereal with the falsetto and be very intimate. You’re very trained and did the exactly right thing with the song.” Simon: “You completely utterly messed that up. It was like being at some horrible Sunday lunch.”

LOVE PARIS! I’m already anxious to see her perform and buy her CD. Lisa was great. I didn’t get the accolades for Katherine McPhee, I thought she was terrible, or maybe she just didn’t move me. The others were mostly forgettable.

My top picks for the girls are Mandisa, she did something totally different and took a chance her first time, she did not try and play it safe, she is great!!! Paris I expected her to sing a song like that and with her family background everyone should have known she was not going to just act so innocent as she did on the auditions, she did not surprise me at all another Fantasia. Kinnik was great!!! Not only did she sound good she looked and represented that song well, I don’t know what Randy was talking about she will bring it even better next week!! Kelly Pickler is also a fav, she may have been a little nervous but I would love to see her go far.

Kathryn was by far the best. Lisa was amazing for a 16 yr old, and I loved Mandesa, too. The rest of them might as well go home now.

Kinnik did very well. I am not really sure what Randy and Simon were talking about. Kinnik looked very elegant and had wonderful stage presence.

I think you have it stacked pretty good, so there is no need for me to get longwinded like last year and rehash each performance. However, I will give my rankings and a few comments.

I think that you can already pencil in 5 of 6 finals positions right now. In order of talent : Paris, Lisa, Katherine, Mandisa, Kelli. These 5 are head and shoulders above the rest. Paris and Lisa are amazing, I can see them going far in the competition. Katherine is very good, but last night I was screaming for her to let go and belt it out, I think she held back and had Simon’s “Less is more” admonition stuck inside her head. Mandisa is also very very good, and will be a force throughout. Kelli is quite possibly this years Carrie “diamond in the rough.” She is so raw and you could see the nerves, but to quote a couple people from last year “the girl can SANG!!!” Also, my 18 yr old son fell in love last night. ROFL.

I think Heather can go ahead and pack her bags. She is nowhere close to the other 11. bye bye. Unfortunately I also think Stevie can pack up too— that is a shame, she is so vocally gifted, BUT she is a classical singer and needs to head down that road. Her song choiced has doomed her.

The other 5 - Becky, Ayla, Brianna, Kinnik, and Melissa are basically living on borrowed time and fighting to be this years “you made the finals now go home” Lindsey Cardinale. I think Becky and Ayla have the potential to step it up and bring it. I think Simon was dead on with Kinnik and Melissa - we have seen the best we are going to get from them, and it is not good enough (they are my prediction to leave next week). That leaves sweet little friendly Brianna (Gag!). Some people will like the brassy sassy act, and she does have some talent, but like Mikaila last year, the act will wear thin very fast.

The girls definately laid down the gaunlet for the guys tonight. They better bring thier A games. My early favs are Elliot — what an amazing voice. and my man the OLD MAN Taylor Hicks, representing Alabama, Every fiber in my being is just screaming out for him to bust out some Joe Cocker “You are so Beautiful” tonight. Don’t know how that will go over with the Gen Xers, but I know he would nail that song bigtime.

Kathryn McPhee all the way! She has a near perfect voice and she doesn’t scream the way some of the other girls did. I could actually listen to her without getting a headache! The tone and texture of her voice is amazing. Go Kathryn!!

Kathryn McPhee was by far the best singer.

However, the best performance of the night was Paula Abdul as Chewbacca!!!!

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you, Rodney. I would pick Lisa as number one, followed by Katherine then Paris. I wouldn’t put Becky in the top group at all. Even cute little Kellie Pickler wasn’t that good, although I believe she will make it to the finals. Mandisa definitely belongs in the top group. Melissa and Kinnik belong there as well. The sooner Brenna is gone, the happier I’ll be. Stevie should never have been there in the first place. Heather has a nice voice but just isn’t going to cut it in this group. Paris is a great little performer, I’m just not all that crazy about the tone of her voice. Lisa blew me away.

February 22, 2006 08:25 AM | Link to this

ROFL ALD!!! MY son said the same thing last night. “What’s with the Chewbacca think Paula has going on”. Also, I think Paula had a little something something in her glass, I noticed she started ummmmm “drifting” toward the end of the show.

What are y’all thinking calling Katharine McPhee the best singer or even in the top four. The girl pitched the song too high and her voice ran out for most of the performance. The hoot is her mother teaches voice. This is REALLY BAD advertising for her mom’s teaching.

Paris, Lisa, Mandisa, Kinnik, Katherine, and probably Becky are my pics for top six. The rest I am not sure they can pull it off, especially Brenna. She has got to go!

By Deirdre

February 22, 2006 08:37 AM | Link to this

Joyce, All the judges disagree with you on Katherine. They thought she was great which is probably great advertising for her mom. Some voices are appealing to some people while not to others. Maybe her tone isn’t to your taste but she sang great, as did paris, Mandisa and Lisa.

By Rich

I thought Paris was so so. Her voice was good but definitely not the best. I thought her bouncing around stage was ridiculous. So she’s sixteen, big deal. In a competition age is not a factor. I think the last girl was the best and the girl with the long black curly hair was right up there with her. I think Simon had it correct about the Olita Adams song. Everyone has performed it and it’s forgettable.

This will boil down to a battle among the youth. Mandisa is good but I don’t think America can get over her appearance. Kinni was great but in her own words, she “can learn from the babies.” I was blown away by the youngest two contestants and at this point I think it is theirs to loose. My money is on Paris. She has heritage on her side. Like Whitney Houston, but with character.

Kellie Pickler all the way man!!! She and Paris are my two favorites.

Katharine and Paris were the only two you could listen to for more than five minutes before your ears would bleed.

I think Randy and Paula need to invest in a new cliche’ book. My wife and I were guessing what each one would say before they ever said anything.

Paris is going to be the fav, Mandisa, Lisa and Kathryn. But Kinnik - no way. “She” is a “he” and performed okay, but will not last. The opera singer will be the first to go - she is out of her league.

Paris and Kellie by a mile BUT I beg of everyone…please..please..NEVER, NEVER vote for Brenna Gethers and don’t buy into her sob story about being poor, eating two meals a month (then why are you fat?)she is trying the sympathy vote after seeing it work for a much sweeter and sincere Kellie. It looks like looks will play a factor, some of the tall thin girls looks they could be on Amercias Top Model if they don’t make it here. Just say NO to Brenna and send her back home.

I’m almost wondering if we watched the same show. The only voice I felt stood out with my eyes closed was Mandisa’s. Paris was amazing but I’m putting her second to Mandisa because she is so young. Katharine was very good but I seriously disagree with Simon (for the first time) that she was the best of the night. I think Mandisa’s weight got in the way of his ears. Too bad. My order:

  1. Mandisa – smoked on every level! No one could touch her!

  2. Paris Bennett – BURNED!; amazing poise AND performance ability and she fell second to Mandisa for me only because her song choice was safer.

  3. Katharine McPhee – hubby liked her more than me, he gave her a 4 star but I gave her 3; almost on a par with Mandisa and Paris.

  4. Lisa Tucker – I disagree with all the judges; she was better than Melissa but not on a par w/ Mandisa, Paris or Katharine.

  5. Melissa McGhee – Very good but she has no star quality.

  6. Ayla Brown - better than Kinnik because she stayed on key for the most part but not great.

  7. Kinnik Sky – off key a lot! That is fatal for me; when will they learn that this is about POP music and not Theatre!!!

  8. Kelly Pickler - Sorry Mike because she very pitchy and an unstable, mediocre performance; likeable but I was not impressed.

  9. Heather Cox – horrible start; mediocre; pitchy; I think that was truly as good as she can be.

  10. Becky O’Donohue – Bad!!! Doesn’t showcase her voice; oversung, bad choice of songs – The Motels? Come on! Her performance was bad Kareoke.

  11. Stevie Scott – Bad song; too soft; bad delivery; I found myself wanting to scream at her to SING.

  12. Brenna Gethers - Mediocre at best and pitchy but her ugly attitude over shadows everything; I’m over her street fighter glare and challenge and am sure she is having a polarizing effect on the other contestants. GET RID OF HER.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

There is something that annoyed me about Paris; maybe it was the hairstyle? As for our other Georgian, I loved Kinnick’s performance. I thought she was beautiful and had a powerful voice. My two other favorites are Kellie and Katherine.

Good comments achin. One clarification though, Because the Night (Becky’s song) was actually a Springsteen song later covered pretty effectively by 10,000 Maniacs.

Mandisa started the show off well. I really thought she did a good job with her song choice. And I thought Paris was wonderful. She gave a great, energetic, very memorable performance. I agree that Stevie Scott & Heather Cox will likely be the ones to head home. Heather seemed to strain with her song & it wasn’t powerful or memorable at all. Stevie should likely stick to opera. I’m sure she’s great at it. Her performance last night was mediocre, IMO. Can’t wait to see what the boys can bring!

Lisa Tucker - A very good candidate with a dynamic personality she should be in the top 5 as well. If the hairstyle changes this will bring out another Alicia Keys and she will bring it every time. She’s pure and has nothing to loose because someone will pick her up whether she wins or not.

By Mike S

Achin - I can agree with just about evrything you said — even on Kelli. On it’s own it wasn’t a great performance, but there is just something about her (the “likability” factor) that has a lot of people rooting for her.

I agree she has a lot of work to do, but her sincerity and her “stars in her eyes” Naivity are so endearing that at this point in the competition a lot of us are overlooking the nervous jitters in her voice.

That said, she has exactly 2 more weeks to work that out — she will not last very long if she doesn’t. But, unlike Brenna’s insincere “we were so poor” act last night, Kelly is definately getting the “Underdog” love.

Can’t wait for tonight. I just know that Taylor is gonna bring it. Go to the link in Rodney’s post from last week — Taylor is awesome on the songs at that link.

Paris was the best performer out of all the female singers she has the best voice and she just represented for her hometown.

inrefrence to because the night…..

The original song was a demo recorded by Springsteen during sessions for his Darkness on the Edge of Town. The Patti Smith Group was working on Easter in the studio next door, and the bands were swapping tapes; Springsteen even composed some songs in the other band’s style. With male-centered lyrics and a reported Latin feel, the workingman’s lament wasn’t finding a place on the album. Smith took the song and recast it from the female perspective, and it was released soon after as the first single for their album.

I do have a suggestion for everyone here — it is something I talked about last year, and something Achin hit on in her post.

Don’t just “watch” the performance. Close your eyes and “Listen” at times — it will completely change how you feel about some of the singers. Remember, you will “see” the performances on TV, but when you buy the CD it is to “listen” too.

Watch Simon, you will notice that about half the time he has his eyes closed while the performers are singing. He is doing exactly what Achin and I are talking about, he is Hearing the Music instead of watching the performance.

I SO disagree with so many of you. I think Madissa was the best last night. She took a chance with that song and did a great job. Paris bounced around too much and reminded me of Fantasia, who I am NOT a fan of. And I actually liked Ayla’s rendition of Reflections. Kinnik looked scary to me. Her voice was okay, but it was like watching a drag show. Sorry just my opinion. I really don’t remember any one else.

News Flash!

The best singer last night was Mandisa (I didn’t like the song); however, Paris, while not the best vocal performance, did exactly what she needed to do and that was to simple show that she had spunk and stage presence. BTW- She knocked it out of the park with her showmanship last night.
One thing we can all agree on is that Paris is the best sheer vocalist out of all the contestants, including the males.

When/If she puts it all together…its over!

Lisa- Was very boring to me. If anyone knows the original artist that sings “I Am Changing” (Jennifer Holiday) knows that she made that song so bland. She a good singer, but she doesn’t have charisma.

Katherine- She can sing but she’d better develop some stage presence or she might start to come across is boring too, especially when she gets into the top 12 where they all have to show versatility. Also, everyone talks about Paris’ tone of voice…yet Katherine come across as very dingy and a airhead sometime. However, it’s cute when a white girl does it, but its considered “stupid and annoying” when someone else does it. (hint-hint)

Kellie Pickler- Everyone little “Golden Girl” what can I say! I’d bet that if most of you (who are bashing Paris) could’ve taken Paris’ performance and voice and given it to little Ms.Pickler, she we be considered the best thing since slice bread.

Yes, there is no denying that Paris has a great voice and strong stage performance but I felt like I could have easily been watching Auntie and Grandmother living vicariously through this girl. It was soo obvious that every move and every was rehearsed and choreographed down to the last bounce by her professional singer relatives. Even her hairstyle was screaming 60’s/70’s. Sorry. I’m not impressed.

I’m over Lisa Tucker already. She was on Star Search as the junior singer a few years ago when A** was hosting. Anyone else remember her? Google it and you’ll find it. Anyway, it’s the same tired act…predictable and acting too old for her age. Talking about stage school? She may not be a monster but she has definitely worn out the school!

I think Mandisa was awesome. I really feel that she will go a long way in this competition. I thought Paris did okay. The girl can sing but I don’t think she picked a song that displayed her vocals. I thought Lisa and Katharine were great too. Kinnik did okay, if given another chance I think she’ll prove why she was chosen in the top 24. I agree with everyone here, Brenna has to go. Her attitude sucks. Can’t wait to hear the guys tonight.

We may all be surprised at the voting results, so many of the girls are alike in their little groups of 2 or 3….the votes will be split for many of the contestants. Surprises may abound. KeepitReal, you must hate blondes, ” poor Ms. Pickler..” Teen age girls will not vote for an older, over sized Mandisa, and trust me, thats who stays on the lines and votes. There’s always a gig on Weight Watchers for her, possibly.

ARE YOU KIDDING?? I think the auditions should begin again! There are only two ladies of the twelve that should go on to the finals and they will probably be voted off very soon. Note to Paris there is only one Fantasia please “do you” and be a unique performer. America put up with Fantasia because she was truly talented despite her theatrics they won’t want to do that a second time. The only talent that I saw was Mandisa (she will do well if she stays away from the norm i.e. R&B and Katharine McPhee. Katharine got my vote! Sorry folks the so-called “Georgia Peach” needs to come back to Fayetteville and try again next year. Bring on the boys if they are as bad as the ladies I don’t think America will be watching. After 5 years Idol is getting boring.

I liked the comment of comparing Paula Abdul to Chewbacca. I thought it was just me, but she reminded me of Zora from the Planet of the Apes.

Other than that, I thought the girls did basically very well. I can picture the two leaving, but they just didn’t bring it home.

I amnot sure what her name is, however, she is form Duluth. I saw the young lady from Fayetteville and thought she was very good, however, after hearing the more mature vocal stylings and performance on the Duluth’s lady’s maturity, I have to go with her for now.

Pickler is the ONLY one that admitted her daddy is in jail, from looks of this group…she isn’t the only one with that status. Even if the Brenna girl makes it, I bet somewhere in the South Bronx there’s an arrest warrant waiting on her, now they just know where she is. Mandisa ??? Are you kidding? She’s old, waaaay too old and take my word, looks counts. She won’t stand a chance up against some of these babes. She needs to lay off the lard. I agree teen-agers won’t go for her, no way.

I agree with Rich that Stevie and Heather should be the first to go…if there were 3 leaving Breanna should definitely be the third strictly on attitude (so she need to go next week!)…Paris was okay but I think she has the connections to make it without needing AI…I liked Mandisa very much and hope that she gets some sort of recording deal down the line but no matter how good she may be I think her size will keep her from making it all the way…unfortunately just not what most Americans consider an “idol”

AI last night was bland except for a few performances. I just wonder if any of the contestants last night ever watched the previous seasons, if so, what was with all the slow, boring love songs. Step it up and do the damn thang. My favs are as follows:

Mandesa - #1, took a chance and rocked the house.

Lisa - Beautiful voice but needs to pick better songs.

Katherine - A suprise but pretty good. Has no appeal other than good voice.

Kinnick - Love her voice but she needs to pick better song choices to stay in. Also to Ms. Kinnick, please change your style of dress, she looked like a drag queen last night.

Paris - OK, but last night I just wanted to reach through the television and make her stand still. Didn’t like her rendition of Midnight Train at all.

Becky, Kellie, Melissa, Ayla, Heather - Not memorable at all!

Brenna, Stevie - Hopefully going home Thursday!

As for the men tonight. As long as Taylor makes it through I don’t care about the rest! Peace.

You guys are forgetting about Ruben Studdard. He didn’t have the body of an ‘American Idol’, but he won. And he didn’t have a great personality like Madissa. I think she will go really far. I think Brenna will stay for another week, purely for the dramatic affect.

mandisa vs paris in the final?? hmmm

paris is young as for the innocent act i doubt it is an act she is just bubbly..and i thought i was watching an exact copy of glady knights when she first appear on the Dick Clark show….

mandisa.. remind me of jennifer holliday not because of her body’s bulit but because of her pipes..she can sang

hey can somebody tell me what that girl name with the dad in jail and mom pass away? i was really happy for her but it appear she fell off the radar after her audition….

paula didnt appear her usual self.. and whoa her comments at a few of the ladies was so unpaulalike…..

my top 3 1) Mandisa 2) Paris 3) Lisa

if brenna makes it because her boys fan help her get in… but she remind me of an upscale call girl.. but the ? is does she want it or is she trying to get into hollywood??????

Okay, I missed last night’s show so I can’t attest to Brenna’s poor performance, but I can tell you this:

I grew up with Brenna and her family. They were indeed poor. In fact, the poorest of the poor. I won’t get into just how poor they were, but believe me, if she said last night that they were poor, she meant it.

She had the same sassy little attitude as a kid as she does today. She was the cutest little annoying brat in the neighborhood. I think her attitude may come from the fact that she was the cutest one in her family, and really looked like she didn’t even belong in the family. In the 80’s light skin with long hair went a long way, and Brenna was one of few in our area that had it.

I have seen some really rude comments regarding the contestants’ weight, hairstyles, baby talk voices, famous family members, family background, etc. Come on people. We all know that we have black and white contestants. Some people sound racist and others are just voting for the best performer without discrimination. Keep the rude comments to yourself or don’t blog. A person like me who recognizes talent no matter what race, size, or whether someone’s father is in jail does not want to read this crap. We had some good white contestants last night and we had some bad ones. The same with the black contestants. I personally thought Brenna was horrible. Some of you need to grow up or just get a life. Based on what I saw last night, I wouldn’t break my neck running to the store to get any of there CD’s. Pickler is cute, but the voice was shaky and all over the place. I know…nerves. Paris did an imitation of Gladys Knight, I am old enough to remember, trust me.. Someone showed her an old tape and she copied it. I don’t what her name is, but the girl with the long dark hair that sang last, she probably has the most potential. STOP THE RACIAL TALK OR ASSUMPTIONS OF RACIAL TALK. I’m sick of it. People like who they like and it usually has nothing to do with race but what they like to look at. I thought Mandisa was fabulous and yet I seriously doubt she will be the AI this year because she is not the package.

Breanna needs to go back stripping, that what she looks like she was doing last night.Too much posing, and too much attitude.Paris is a good singer, I see her attitude changing. I agree with Bo. Paris viewed an old tape of Gladys and copied it. Great impersonation…I give her that. But she gets zero for originality. It’s 2006 people. I prefer the sound of Beyonce to Gladys. If someone is all that interested in the sounds of Gladys Knight 30 years plus later, they can go out and buy the real deal. For now, Paris should keep it real and do something current that shows her own style rather than imitating the dated sounds her Auntie and Grandmother groomed her for.

The “Vote for the worst” website has picked Brenna as its poster child. Much like Scott last time, it means a lot of votes to keep her around. I also thought that it was the one time the Judge’s were trying to influence voting for the entertainment value.

The fact that Becky was ranked so high by the auhor is a shot to his/her credibility.

Most surprising - Ayla Brown. Not the best, just the most surprising.

Pickler - Her story is great, but it is offically overblown. Stevie may have blown it with that song.

Several were in that “forgettable/average” category.

Hey Yo Daddy, you need to watch Idol more often. We all know about Kelly’s dad which was one of the first things we learned about her. She is short on depth and control, sorry Mike, but she is genuine which is why so many people like her. Like most marginal singers, however, in the end she will be voted off.

Um, yeah ackin4bacon, it’s called a “joke”. Let me see if I can explain. Oh never mind you still wouldn’t get it. Did you know Kelly’s dad is in jail and her mom left her? Next week she’ll be singing an original song entitled “My Daddy is is Jail and My Mama Left Me” Can’t wait. She will sing it standing in front of a video montage of Kelly and her Dad, who is in jail. I believe Yo Daddy was being sarcastic with the Pickler/jail reference. Since I have nothing to do today, I have counted the number of positve blog references of each contestant. If it were only the people on this blog voting, the outcome would be 1.Mandisa, 2.Paris, 3.Katherine, 4.Lisa. These girls would be my top 4 choices also, maybe not in that order. Have you noticed it is only males who insist that sweet little Kellie is a good singer? You guys are suckers for a good sob story. I just read somewhere that Becky is a Maxim girl. She certainly is gorgeous but the voice is just ok. Ayla is a lovely girl with a pleasant voice but she needs to get back to her basketball team. If I had to add 2 more girls to the list it would be Melissa and Kinnik…but only because we need them to fill out the 6 finalists.

Cindy - Kelly is very deserving of being in the top 24 thank you. She has been amazing all the way through with 2 notable exceptions.

She had a real bad case of nerves in the group sing during Hollywood week and also you could hear the nerves when she first started singing.

That said, Achin is right about her chances, she is not up to the level of what we are almost all in agreement are the top 4.

However, I do think she has room to grow and has a good shot at making the top 12. Will she be the American Idol, no she will not, but she does deserve to be where she is.

BTW, did everyone know that her daddy is in jail? Just checking :-)

Kelly has a decent voice, but not the best among the 12.I just think the singers should be judged on singing ability. We don’t really need to know about her dad, who is in jail. Mike, I guess that’s why Baskin Robbins has 24 flavors of ice cream…something for everyone. I really like Mandisa and Kathleen best of the women/girls. As for Lisa Tucker, she is not new to the talent search circuit. Google “Lisa Tucker, Star Search” and you’ll see that three years ago she was doing the same gig on that show when A** hosted. So I’m not as impressed as others with Lisa either since I’ve seen her entire act on Star Search years before. Exact same act. Yaaawwn.

By Mike S

February 22, 2006 01:52 PM | Link to this

LOL We actually agree more than you think Cindy. I have Kathleen and Mandisa ranked in my top 4. I did not see Lisa on Star Search so she is new to me, and she can sing just as good as the rest.

Actually if you look at it, the 4 we are almost all saying are the top are very much the same. Lisa - veteran of the “Talent” circuit Kathleen - Mother is a Vocal coach Paris - Ann Nesby, need I say more. Mandisa - also very well trained voice.

ONe of the guys mentioned the most - Taylor Hicks has been touring the “Chitlin” circuit for years and has fronted for some very big performers/groups.

So, while AI is an “Amatuer talent show” the ones who rise to the top are all been there/done that types for the most part.

That is why Carrie was such a breath of fresh air last year, she was genuine newcomer. Same thing with Fantasia and Clay. In the end the newcomer who grew throughout the show was the one standing in the end.

That is the draw with Kelly, she is a true “raw” talent. There will be a “raw” talent among the guys who will step forward too.

But early on, the ones with experience always take the early lead.

By Leslie

February 22, 2006 02:04 PM | Link to this

To Leslie is a damned fool I guess I did not fully explain myself concerning Mandisa. What I meant was that she was very talented and America may think that she can only sing R&B and she needs to stay away from that genre so that America can truly see her vocal talent. And no, Fantasia did not “invent” that style but she did do it very well because she was so talented. And by the way no need for name calling it ain’t that serious!!

I didn’t think Paris was that great. Not a big fan of her so far. I just don’t know what Simon saw in her performance.

By George, I think you’ve got it! I wasn’t that crazy about Paris’ performance last night either. I loved her first audition, but she hasn’t been impressing me since then. I thought she was not good at all last night. Much like a high school talent show. I think she can do better and I hope she does.

This blog (and by the way, my 21 year old son says it isn’t a blog, its a forum) has taken a very odd turn.

I am looking forward to tonight’s show. It should be very interesting considering that I don’t remember much about the men other than Taylor and Chris Daughtry.

If you guys would like to check out some great local talent go to www.az1sings.com. These girls are fantastic. Not quite old enough for AI yet but just wait - they are definitely gonna hit the scene big time! I caught a performance recently at the Mall at Stonecrest and they were wonderful. The new chick in TLC, O-So-Crispy also performed and in my opinion fell short in the talent area compared to these girls

Katherine McPhee was okay but she was wrong, Barbara Striesand was not the original artist who sang since I fell for you.

Suprised so many people didn’t like Paris’ hair. I loved it cause it was natural, not a lot of weave, and it takes confidence to be yourself. It’s refreshing to see a young ladies look their age. And, if her family wouldn’t have helped her everyone would have said she should have got help from her Mother and Grandmother. And, Mandisa can make it. I love my Kelley Price and Angie Stone CDs and i could care less how much they weigh.

If only as many people were as interested in important things like government policy and human suffering as they are with American Idol, the world would be a better place.

You people are just SAD. Get a life!

Glad someone else caught that, Eleanor Walker.

“Since I Fell for You” words & music by Woodrow Buddy Johnson, first recorded by the Buddy Johnson Orchestra featuring Ella Johnson (1948);

Covered by: Nina Simone (1967); Bonnie Raitt (November 1971); Michael Bolton (1992); Susan Anton (2001); Jimmy Scott (July 8, 2003)

among the notables.

We laughed about her being too young to know its history. It’s like my niece coming to me ten years ago to ask if I’d heard to a really fantastic new group - LEAD ZEPPLIN!

Yo-Dude..what are you talking about?! No one is dogging anyone because of their race. And since when is an Idol Blog a “black” blog? My two favorites come representing…one black, one white.

Don’t worry, Cindy. As Deirdre said earlier, school resumes next week. The children will be gone, Yo Daddy included.

Y’all need to quit picking on Kellie. She’s not the one that keeps bringing up her dad. She mentioned it last night as the intro to her song, but it’s been hyped by the media and bloggers like us. I don’t think she’s going for the sympathy. She seems to be an open, honest person who speaks what’s on her heart. And she has a lot of emotion wrapped up in this competition.

That said, she’s not the best singer in the field. Everyone on this blog keeps talking about how it’s the singing that counts, not the looks. You keep forgetting that we’re looking for a standout performer. Stage presence is as important as the voice. Kellie’s appeal stems from her sincerity and her sweet looks more than her vocal discipline.

When considering the total performance (voice and stage presence), the contestants rank as follows:

  1. Lisa. The most consistent performance of the night.
  2. Paris. Like other posters here, I really liked her performance, but thought it was a little contrived. Every bump and seemed well-planned.
  3. Mandisa. In this case, size doesn’t matter. She commands the stage and is confident with her voice and presence.
  4. (Tied) Katherine and Kellie. Katherine easily had one of the best voices, but her stage presence was too understated. Kellie will have to work very hard the next few weeks to stay in the competition. She has the presence and a lot of people rooting for her. She has a beautiful, natural voice, but she has to learn to control it.

Everyone else was average or poor. Sorry, Georgians, but Kinnik just did not bring it in last night. She wasn’t in the bottom two, so maybe she’ll make a comeback next week.

I loved the show last night. Big UPs to my Homegirls from GA (Paris and Kinnik)…they did their thing last night.

I’ve been a fan since the very beginning. I think we have a very talented group of young ladies on our hands and they definitely BROUGHT IT last night! I love to listen and close my eyes and get the real feel of the vocalist. With that said My top 5 in random order: Paris, Mandisa, Ayla, Katherine, Lisa. Who takes # 6 I personally think its up for grabs and if they pull hard enough Ayla will be gone. Definitely not in the running for me: Becky, Heather and Stevie. And Brenna HAS GOT TO GO on STANK attitude and personality alone.

Tonight should be great but the guys have got to BRING IT. Early favorits for me: Taylor, Sway, and Ace.

I would have to say the young 16 year old displayed several things during her performance. He stage presence was great however her mannerism and gracefulness was overwhelming. My vote is for her!

One thing - Brenna is a straight-up STRIPPER and that’s the only stage she needs!

If I were to guess, Yo Daddy is not who he/she is trying to lead us to believe. There are lots of clues in the postings that have been sent.

Everybody enjoy the show tonight. Talk to you tomorrow.

Can Mandisa sing? Yes. Will she win? No. Being overweight is fine for men (i.e. Ruben Studdard—where is Ruben anyway) but it’s the kiss of death for women in showbiz..How many fat pop stars can you name?

Mikki, I was thinking the same thing last night. Her facial features are very manly.

Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Peggy Lee, Jennifer Holliday, Carlie Wilson, Wynonna Judd…and that’s just off the top of my head.
