3/22: Kevin (cluck cluck) is out tonight
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After Kevin Covais gets a sandy makeover on the Ford Fusion beach and Barry pumps his album, Ace, Mandisa and Elliott are safe. I’m glad Elliott was safe and I’m glad www.dialidol.com was wrong. Then Kellie gets a safe call. Chris is safe, too, of course. And so.. is… Paris! Phew!
Now it’s Katharine and she is safe. And ditto with Taylor.
That means Kevin, Lisa and Bucky are the bottom three. I got all three of them correct. Wow!
Lisa is given a reprieve. I predicted Bucky’s departure. Am I right? Nope. Kevin is outta here!
“Chicken Little leaves us!” Ryan said.
The vast anti-Chicken Little crowd sighs in relief. I’m disappointed. I liked having him around for people to beat up. Oh, well. So I’m wrong. I’ve gotten five of six bottom dwellers correct but only one for two so far in who is eliminated.

Greetings blawgers from sunny, hot South Beach. Seems like everyone had fun today. Deirdre I’m sure you’re happy. I’m a little upset. I wish Bucky would have left first, but Chick was leaving sooner than later anyway. Oh well, I’ll blawg at you people next week. Shout out to my girls peachy, Vin, and Lisa #1. Great posts today Mike.

Top 10: Chris, Mandisa, Elliot, Katherine, Paris, Kelly, Ace, Taylor, Lisa, Bucky…Work your way back and there you go. Although, Ace may go before Kelly.
I liked Kelly up to this point, but honestly, she is starting to come across as a dumb blonde.

I was shocked that it was Kevin! He usually gets on my last nerve, but I thought he did alright this week. I am endeared to Bucky because he’s so Southern, but he is way out of his league at this point. Lisa is so boring, she doesn’t connect with the viewers. Poor Chicken Little, at least he’ll probably get a lot of dates with hot Chicks now. What is a swirlie? Is that like a wedgie or a noogie?

Erika, see yesterday’s comments. The group Live (can find them on i-Tunes) did this version, and Chris used it last night. I did not think it was right to imply it was “his” version, but whatever. It is a great version though.

Although I am glad that I don’t have to hear Kevin sing another note this AI season, we have to salute his efforts.
I bet that no one at his school will ever bullie him, he’s too famous now, and probably he will get a gig in entertainment somewhere (I will not attend). His singing was not something I looked forward to each week and the same goes for Ace’s and somewhat Elliot.
Yes, Elliot, as well as he sings, I cannot get past how terrible he sounds.
As for the Florida 80s, that only means that you are getting your swarm of mosquitoes well ahead of the ATL. I can deal with temp. in the 60s which is what ATL gets during most of the winter. IT was 44 today, but it was 65 yesterday and 70 a lot last week.
As for voting down to 5. I disagree, there could be hidden talent in the 6-8 spots that could improve. Look at Kellie, yes, Kellie. Look at Katharine, whwere do most place her? Look at Lisa, she probably does not get far, but she’s derserving of this moment and I am pleased to hear her sing a lot of the time.
America either voted right last night or somehow “voteworst…” got beat last night. Now Kevin’s votes could go to Ace and he’s not worthy of lasting more than 1 or 2 more weeks. I do not connect with his voice (probably neither with his style).

The best part about Kevin being voted off is that Randy and Paula can’t keep filling the poor kid’s head with lies about his ability. He gave his best performance last night but it wasn’t even close to the talent of the other 10. Mike, it seems to me that DiolIdol doesn’t work all that well. The singer who got the least amount of busy signal time wasn’t in the bottom 3.

I liked Kevin. He will be working with Randy in the near furture I believe. Lisa there is a peronality on sale at K-Mart isle 8 go get it girl, what a boring person and a singer.Paula is on some kind of drug, she should be arrested, it is so clear she is on some thing. Chris will win this whole thing hands down folks. Kelli is now pretending to be some naive country girl that she really is not..but no avail America will buy it for a while.Don’t be too sure on Bucky leaving next week. Paris is a pretender as well she is annoying..Taylor is already a star win or not. McPhee is a spoiled little fat girl. Getting Over - I loved the “what’s Ballsy mean” exchange. Did anyone catch the exchange between Kellie and Chris.
After Ryan said ” we don;t have enough time on the show to explain that one”, Kellie looked at Chris and said “Huh?” and Chris responded “You don’t want to know” LOL. (yes I read lips)
I am beginning to think this is less and less act, and more and more that she is truly a naive airhead. Don’t get me wrong, it is obvious she is playing it to the hilt (ergo Simon’s naughty little minx comment), but the reason she is playing it so well is she doesn’t have to work hard to do it.

I personally think that Kellie is “for real”. I do not think that she entertained percursory thoughts for landing on AI with the ulterior motive to use naivete to her advantage/win her votes. If this was an after thought, she must/should have known that there are others with a little more talent in the competition and people will cast their votes for them first and foremost.
She is definitely a Country singer, not a great one, just like Chris is a Rocker, and Mandisa and Paris are R&B.
I think that she started that Stevie Wonder song really well - with a Country flavor, but lost everyone’s interest after a while.
Furthermore, How can you criticize that her only prowess as a vocalist is to sing Country when that’s all that Chris does and does really well.
I think that her rendition of that Patsy Cline song was good. Not great, but good. She’s improving, or so I hope.
If you say that she needs a lot of improvement before she could be declared a (Country) singer, I would agree.

Kellie cant be that dumb. why not ask the question in private rather than on stage. She may be vying for the next jessica simpson spot… and jessica is very very rich. just ask nick. Anyway, i am sad to see anyone go. I wont say any harsh words because Kevin does have feelings. AI producers, Simon, Randy and Paula put him there knowing his was not suppose to be in the top 24. Now Ace is an adult. I think he is ready for another scare. Poor lisa has to know her days are numbered….2 times in bottom 3. Notice that Bucky and Keivn both took time to hug lisa before she took her seat. Last week neither Ace or Lisa attempted to hug anyone. At least those to guys have class.

Just one question.. how are you all finding out the theme each week? I heard about Stevie but not the others. I watched the show last night, but i didnt hear the theme. Glad Bucky survived one more week. This has to be a great experience for him. And did you hear Paula name 3 of almost 40 people who were past AI losers to go on a make it big. She didnt mention Diana nor Cory. Those odds of makikng it big anyway are not that great, but i like Bucky’s chances in country. But i dont really listen to country so what do i know.

Paula’s been on That 70’s Show stealin’ dope from the hippie….
Mandisa wins it all; hands down. America loved Kate Smith…remember her…fat as a pig, but Mandisa has that kind of power in her voice and she seduces with her charms. McFever wishes she were that hot… Chris will get a contract. Kelli is cute and dumb as a fox, but not as good a singer as Eliot or Paris. Taylor is a longshot, but he can’t be lazy. Ace is a three dollar bill. Lisa is cute as Kellie, but please, too sunday school. Fire the stage mom, and Lisa could win…Bucky. Nice guy; out of his league.

that was a link from the eastcarolinian online. My alma mater.. it was an article about one of the girls who made it to Hollywood and her experiences there. http://www.theeastcarolinian.com/ you may be able to find it doing a search there. it was a good article. she told how the judging occurred at each of the beginning cities. we knew paula, randy and simon could not see 15,000 people in two days but now we know how that actually works. That definitely was good to know. you actually come a week earlier to audition under tents with AI producers and underlings first. kellie… all i know is i am from NC and i wish she would cut the dumb act. she may be that dumb and doesn’t realize she is that dumb. but my bet is…she wants Nick Lachey and she knows he goes for that type. I too am concerned that Bucky’s confidence is beginning to wane. It aint over Bucky, keep trying.

I had dinner with my daughter last night and we both were just speechless when talking about Chris - She’s 30, I’m older than 30. That’s why he’ll win - Mandisa second. He’s hot, confident, and talented. I would go to his concert as well as buy his albums. He spans the age groups. And, isn’t that what IDOL is all about??? Bye to Kevin…go home, young man and sing in local theatre. Bucky would be good at DollyWood - and I mean that in a nice way.

Good morning everyone…and a good one it is. Thank you, America.
Braveheart, if you get on this morning. You’re absolutely right. Many of the contestants only seem to know how to do one thing. I focused on Kellie because Jane had asked what she would pick to sing next week. Chris has become pretty one note…its a good note….but just one. Ace sounds the same every week. So does Lisa. I think Mandisa is capable of a number of styles and I think she will show us that. Taylor gives the same energy to his music everytime. I guess what I’m saying is that the time has come to start mixing it up. With the 21st century theme, I don’t think that will happen this week.

So Chris did a relatively obscure version of “I Walk the Line” and didn’t acknowledge the originator. BFD! I’m sure that was a decision of the producers of AI, probably because Live records for a studio/company that isn’t affiliated with AI. You’ve got to remember that the contestants have very little control of what goes on with the show and business decisions trump everything.
Did anyone notice how much more applause Chris received during the announcement of the bottom 3? He got more sustained applause than any of the other folks. He’s obviously the one to beat. He also just exudes SEX! The hottest guy ever on AI!!!

Mike S and Deirdre, good morning! So I guess we got our wish on Kevin. Deirdre, did you mention what the theme was next week? I kind of felt bad for him last night but oh well, it was only a matter of time before he left the show. I honestly thought Bucky would go first. Lisa seemed a little bit more sincere this week and now I think she realizes she has to up her game if she wants to stay around. But I think Bucky is doomed no matter what he does. The top 8 spots have already been taken by Chris, Elliott, Paris, Mandisa, Ace or Lisa, Taylor, Katharine and Kellie.

Morning Shay. I think the theme is 21st Century music. That gives them about 5-6 years to choose from depending on what side of the Y2K argument you were on.

Yo Daddy. that’s the big question, isn’t it? Who gets Kevin’s votes? Remember yesterday CRAZYFORCOVAIS, who seemed sincere, said his/her votes would go to Katharine. Seems like an odd switch to me, no talent to talent but then almost everyone who is left is good.

Good Morning Blawgers and Congratulations. Your wish has been granted. I actually felt sorry for the little guy.
Yo Daddy, you brought up a good point. Who will get Kevin’s votes now that he’s gone? I can see a great deal of them going to Kellie. She’s cute and not really strong in the competition so she will get a few sympathy votes as well.

Deirdre/Braveheart - you are both dead on. So far everyone have basically been one trick ponies.
Mandisa showed a little bit of range this week as she added smoldering Torch singer to the R&B/Gospel sound of her previous songs.
Katherine got a little more sultry with her singing this week too, but it still came across as the same stiff style as before.
Chris - he needs to either just get down with a cool country song (he can do it, you can here it in his voice — some Trace atkins or Toby Kieth) or he needs to do a ballad (he came close to it with Walk the Line). Just something a little different or people will get bored by the time the next 10 weeks are over.
The only others I give any chance of mixing it up some are Taylor (although he will put his unique blues flair) and possibly Eliot (I just know he has a WOW song in him somewhere.)
Ace will whine anything he does, Kellie can do country and only country (and a very narrow band of country at that), Bucky has to growl his way through whatever he does, Lisa is a MIckey Mouse Club singer no matter what she does, and Paris, oh Paris, she is the wildcard, but I think her singing style has been so ingrained from Big mama and grandmama that she cannot go outside that little niche she has been singing in so far.
DOn’t get me wrong, every contestant should play to thier strengths without a doubt, but the past seasons have shown that the winner will be the person that can at least step out of thier comfort zone and be tolerable.
Kelly Clarkson - She was the consumate, she sang multiple genres and did all of them well.
Ruben - he won because he sang both Ballads and rocked it up a little, Clay stagnated with only ballads. (Even though Clay is obviously the more successful now - this conversation is about the contest)
Fantasia - She stepped out of the DIVA roll and wowed the entire country with Summertime.
Carrie - did a passable job outside country, while Bo showed he could not go outside of his rock genre.

Deirdre, I still think Kevin’s votes will go to Lisa. Not saying Lisa doesn’t have talent. But I do think she will get the sympathy votes that Kevin was getting. When you think about it, Kevin and Lisa had similiar characteristics i.e. young and innocent. I may be completely off base, but I think Lisa will now get those very young votes from the teenagers and older grandparents.

Hi All! I’m so sad that I’ve been too busy to keep up with y’all but that’s life in the regular world. Note that I don’t say “real” world as what’s real is truly relative.
Kevin now gone is PROOF positive that votefortheworst has NO power. Those we’ve hoped would leave have consistantly been exiting on cue so I no longer worry. I really wish, Diane, that’s I been able to find your article on Katharine. What was the jist of the story? The story is apparently no longer available because a search comes up blank.
Don’t forget me. I’m still with you in spirit.

I was thinking that darn Bucky is still on the show!
Mike S, I told you that Elliott would not be at the bottom 3, as long as it took me to get through to his line…. Everything I predict always come to pass, next week it will be Bucky going home. Achin, good to hear from you as always. Get here when you can.
Mike, good work. They are stuck in their little niches now and, unless they are very careful, they will start to, as you said, stagnate. The winner will be the one who steps out of that comfort zone successfully. A number of our singers are capable of doing that. Katharine has to rock the house, Chris has to sing a full length ballad, Mandisa has to go soft and gentle, Kellie has to sound like something other than country, Paris must go modern and youthful, Taylor better think about doing Georgia on My Mind..even though that is still blues, it should make him sit down for a bit, Elliot has to energize himself. Ace, Bucky and Lisa. don’t think it matters, they’re already on their way out.

I would be very suprised if Kellie did anything other than Country. I would love to see another side of her. But like I said with Lisa, I think she has peaked as well. What we have seen, is what we get. And please don’t ask her to step out of her comfort zone. She will only say. “Huh? What’s a comfort zone? I’m very comfortable on this sofa. I love it!”

Actually Deirdre, my wife and I were talking about Taylor last night. I think he is “Playing the game” right now.
I think this weeks song was a tactical choice. HE knows the Idol history — peak to soon and you don’t win. So far Chris and Mandisa have both unleashed WOW WOW WOW performances, while Taylor has just been slow and steady.
I think Taylor knows he has enough support that he is safe, and he is keeping his powder dry. He knows he has “georgia on my mind” sitting in his back pocket, and he is just waiting for the right place to unleash Da BOMB.
There is always one week about midway through where there is no theme, Taylor is waiting for that week, I garauntee.

Deirdre, I agree. I think they usually put on their best performance right before they depart. It’s like when you know you are in hot water at work, you try and work extra hard to keep from getting fired.
But by that time, it has already been predetermined by the viewers who they want to leave so the contestants really can’t do anything to redeem themselves.

Thanks, Deirdre. You are not alone Mike. I think the Idiots, American or not, are definitely one or two people total. The rhetoric is too similar.
First, Kelly Clarkson undoubtedly had NO real say is whether or not her catalogue was used. In normal circumstances, she owns only a fraction of the rights and mechanicals to her songs so it was Clive and the other “managers” that made the decision to withhold or release her songs. Don’t blame her. She may have only had some say in asking them to RELEASE her tunes to Idol. It makes sense to me that she went to them and said, “Come on guys. You’re making me look like a spoiler.”
I also need to weigh in here for comfort zones not necessarily being a bad thing. If Chris keeps within the genre of each weeks selected format, yet either arranges or uses an arrangement which showcases his style, that’s star quality. Making it your own is what the show is about. If he finds no way to make a theme work for him, then he is only buying into the Vegas/cabaret production style that is occasionally Idol.
The show is about building a fan base and he is doing that big time. So is Mandisa but she has less ability to reach across the ages. I think Chris is less talented than Mandisa, Katharine and Taylor, but he is exhibiting a real star’s ability to control the stage. Think Madonna. She is arguably one of the worst singers ever to dominate Pop Music, but that isn’t the point. She commands her craft and any stage she is on, and Chris is gaining the confidence to do the same thing. He needs, for me, to watch his pitch but other than that, he is building his fan base.
That someone else was responsible for the original arrangement is incidental. He is close to being able to pack an arena right now which could propel him to the winner’s circle. To know your craft and your music that well is powerful.

Why does everyone keep saying Chris stole Live’s version of Walk the Line? It may have sounded kinda similar, but it was definitely arranged differently. When they say Chris “made it his own” it basically means it was the perfect song for him to show off his voice, sex appeal, etc. It’s not like they mean he came up with rocking out to Johnny Cash on his own. So don’t be mad at him for “stealing” Live’s version because he didn’t.
