4/4: Take me home, Idol road
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kenny Rogers was aboard to coach, Paula was surprisingly tough and oddly, Whoopi Goldberg and Chris Rock were in the audience. And Simon got to joke about Ryan’s date with Teri Hatcher: “I’m not trying to look like someone out of ‘Desperate Housewives!’ “
We had some surprisingly robust performances by Chris and Katharine, who moved up a few notches after almost losing last week. Ace, another frequent bottom dweller, did well enough to stay alive. Mandisa and Paris didn’t bring it. And Taylor definitely disappointed. But he’s probably still safe.
(Theme next week, according to idolonfox.com is Queen! Thank you bloggers for finding that out. You’re making my job easy! :) )
The bottom three? I’m guessing Paris, Mandisa and Bucky. Who will go home? I think Paris might be in trouble this week but maybe the Bucky fans will assume he’s safe tonight and he’ll finally get the boot. My prediction: Bucky will go home by a spur, ironically on country night. I’m taking the complacency theory. I noted this before I checked dialidol.com, which currently has Paris, Mandisa and Elliott at the bottom with Mandisa going home. Bucky is ranked No. 5 out of 9. He’s just outside the supposed margin of error to be in the bottom three. Dialidol hasn’t been correct the past couple of weeks but it does show the enduring powers of Kellie, Taylor and Chris and the improvement in Katharine’s voting patterns this week. Voting is still going on the West Coast and that might change things a bit. I’ll check in the morning.
Chris Daughtry (Keith Urban’s “Making Memories of Us”) — He’s going for one of Keith Urban’s best songs ever. His voice is a bit darker than Keith’s but that helps the song, which is full of wistfulness. Rock on Chris! Randy: “Every week, we hear you do the rocker thing. It was good for you to change it up. I really enjoyed it.” Paula: “You showed versatility and still stayed true to who you are.” Simon: “It was great to see a different side of you. The two weeks, you as contestants have chosen boring uninteresting songs and the audience at home deserves better than that.” Simon always hated country. Who cares!
Katharine McPhee (Faith Hill’s “Bringing Out the Elvis”) — She opted for sultry over pure country and it’s a wonderful fit. She’s showing confidence and a dose of sexiness. And she actually picked a passable outfit, too. Randy: “Kind of bluesy country. I liked it. You sang it very nice.” Paula: “That is your style, your niche. Sexy, hot, cool.” Simon: “That song was so peculiar.” “You just don’t like country,” Katharine says, rightfully so.
Kellie PIckler (Reba McEntire’s “Fancy”) — She actually sounds a lot like Reba on this one. She does a far better job with this than Sara Evans last week. And she ends it with an exclamation point. Her best in awhile. Randy: “Finally, you’re in your element. I thought it was great.” Paula: “This is a great night for you.” Simon: “It’d be a shocker if you didn’t do well tonight. I hated the song personally but I thought your performance is very good.”
Elliott Yamin (Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Comes”) This certainly doesn’t sound very country the way Elliott approaches it. Again, he places his souful spin on a tune and it’s quite heartfelt. Randy: “Right now, I’m sitting here. I love this song. Finally, the competition has started. That was hot!” Paula: “You are such a breath of fresh air to this business. You are humble. You are understated. You know you’re great, but you have that careless, reckless abandon.” Simon: “I thought it was a good song choice. It wasn’t a great vocal. It was a bit hesitant, like you were nervous. I didn’t feel that same confidence. You’ll have to do better than that in the future.”
Ace Young (Keith Urban “Tonight I Wanna Cry”) I’m a huge Keith Urban fan and he is tough to sing. But this song is a great fit for Ace’s voice. Sure, since it’s Ace, it’s a much wimpier version of the ballad. He’s a bit unsteady at points but for Ace, one of his better performances. Randy: “These are hard songs to bring personalities to. It was nice, but really boring for me. Good thing. At least at the end you showed your falsetto.” Paula: “I think Ace you have a knack for picking up a song for your voice. That’s who you are, a contemporary nice take on the song.” Simon: “I think the last couple of weeks, you haven’t chosen the right songs. Tonight, you did. Very good.”
Bucky Covington (Gary Allen’s “Best I Ever Had’) - Pop fans might remember Vertical Horizon’s version a few years ago so it’s not that unfamiliar. He’s so ordinary in a bar band way. It’s not memorable but he’s comfortable. Randy: “It was alright. Started a little out of tune, then you got it out of your tune. Good song choice for you.” Paula: “This is your element. Wear that hat proud.” Simon: “It sounded okay to me.”
Mandisa (Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine”) - Definitely won’t be a karaoke version. She didn’t forget the lyrics. It was good but not great. It didn’t quite work. Randy: “Weird song choice for me. The beginning wasn’t hot for me. You were finding your lower range and it wasn’t quite connecting. The good thing is the last four bars, you got it together and showed some personality.” Paula: “You can sing the phone book. The song, I don’t know.” Simon: “I thought the song is horrible. [Why is it I get booed for being constructive?] It was fun. It was cutesy. I liked the four seconds afterwards.”
Taylor Hicks (John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road”) — It’s a pleasurable, kind of kitschy, light song for Taylor. He works it out okay. Still kind of on cruise control. Randy: “It was probably a pretty good choice for you. The vocal wasn’t all that exciting. I didn’t see you exude your personality.” Paula: “I feel like you are so full of life. The song choice didn’t allow you to shine.” Simon: “I thought it was safe, boring, lazy. It sounded like you chose that song 10 seconds ago. Didn’t do anything for you.” Agreed.
Paris Bennett (LeAnn Rimes “How Do I Live”) Yawn. I hate this song. What a bore. And Paris doesn’t improve upon LeAnn’s version. She starts surprisingly weak. She gets better on the chorus but this song is such a stillborn, I don’t think Aretha Franklin could save it. Randy: “I could tell this was a tough song for you to do. People might htink country might be easy. Great melodies are hard to sing… just alright for me tonight.” Paula: “You have a powerhouse voice. I don’t feel you connected with the song. And you struggled to find that place where you own the stage like you always do week after week.” (Paula gets booed!) Simon: “I disagree with Paula. [In a first!!]. I thought it was very good, an excellent choice of song. Reminded me of early Dionne Warwick.” Where did that come from???

Wow rodney, we apparently watched a totally different show tonight.
Kellie - Her best performance of the year. She just cemented her spot for a few more weeks.
Chris - Wonderful ballad. Just what he needed.
Bucky - he nailed this song. his best week yet this year.
Eliot - Another amazing vocal, I just hope the song connected for others as it did for me. This was played at my wedding so the song has special meaning.
Paris - Finally The Paris from the auditions is back. Showed off her voice and lower register. Good job.
Mandisa - Good fun song. Nice to see her change it up a little. but, it was just A’ight.
Taylor - taylor taylor taylor. John Denver? bad song choice dude. you did nothing but mail it in this week.
Katherine - She is beautiful and has a wonderful voice, but this song just did connect. Could not understand half of what she was singing. Did not like it at all. Remember i called her out last week when everyone was raving about how great she did —she WILL be bottom 3 again. bank it.
9 Ace - Started out great, thought “oh god he saved himself” — then the bad notes started, followed by the nasal whine and the ear bleeding falsetto at the end. Book him a ticket home Dano.
Bottom 3 - Katherine, Ace and WIDE OPEN. Could be mandisa, could be a wake up call for taylor, could be Eliot, and possibly Paris.
Ace is most definately gone.

For the first time tonight, Paris was my favorite. I think Chris was good, as well as Katherine, Bucky and Elliott. However, Mandisa was just not good (saying with pain), Taylor was not good, I don’t like his song choice, but Ace needs to go home now……

Rodney Ho, did you even watch the show???? You are not in tune with the bloggers on this site. Mike and Mitch, I’m with you on most of the show. I thought Taylor and Mandisa were really bad. After the first two, I thought everybody else did okay. As much as I hate to say it, I thought (L)ace actually did fair. At least he had enough sense to match up with a contemporary Keith Urban song. My rundown:
Chris — Great job. Katherine — Hot Hot Hot Kellie — Kuntry at it’s best Elliot — Stepped up at the right time Paris — She toned down a little Bucky — Fair vocals; smart song choice (L)ace — God I hoped he would choke Taylor — Just a stupid song choice Mandisa — My ears were hurting. Bad

Paris has a great voice but it did not work with that song. Remember Carmen Something from a couple of seasons ago? She did a much better version of Paris’ song and doesn’t have as good a voice.

Carmen Rasmusen is who you are referring to Deirdre. I referred to her as goat girl when she was on the show. She has released a couple singles available on iTunes that were really good. I wish Mandisa had picked a better song and not worn that sleevless top. I still say she should have picked a Wynonna song.

Been checking some other sites Jim, and everyone pretty much agrees with us. I think Rodney went partying with paula before the show LOL.
Katherine seems to be the dicotomy tonight. I am seeing 50/50 on all the forums and blogs — people either loved her or hated her. There is pretty much a concensus on everyone else.
Glad you like Kat, but i just didn’t connect with her tonight.
I do think Chris just punched his ticket to the finals though - That was awesome.

I am a big Taylor Hicks fan, but tonight he was bad. I did not like his song choice and his performance was too strained and highly pitched. I hate to say it, but he should be in bottom 3 based on performance. He should; however, have enough of the “Soul Patrol” fan base to carry him thru this week. I do not care for Ace. He did ok, but I think he’s in bottom 3. Katharine did ok and looked good, but I think she’s in bottom 3 again. Bucky, sorry, dude, but you have to go. Bucky could have done a Travis Tritt song to liven the crowd, but he chose a pitchy slow song. Bottom 3 again, and out the door for Bucky.

Is it just me or do the judges and Seacrest seem to be trying to steal the attention from the stage? They really got on my nerves tonight. Simon obviously hate country music. I wish the Country labels and singers would just not do the show anymore. I think the producers need to reel in Randy, Paula, and Seacrest. Simon, I can deal with after country night is over.

Mandisa’s worst night, Taylor was very boring but lots of people are tired of his smiley swaying, this has got to be the end of Bucky. He can’t even buy a good cowboy hat. Taylor is the fraternity guy who gets up toward the end of the party and sings and all the guys like it because they have each had 8 Budweisers. The top girls will be Katherine and Kellie, and all the guys are toast. Katherine will win. The next American Idol will be a girl.

Chris is very talented but will not win.
Now, one more comment. After the top 24, the three judges are irrelevant. Simon tonight said he doesn’t like country. That’s like going to a football game and the head referee says he doesn’t like football. The judges are nothing but fluff. They enjoy the banter, but it’s all for the show. They serve no purpose and are often wrong.

Wow, what a weird night.
I love Taylor. I think he might have been the worst tonight. I’m dumbstruck at how not into it he was.
Katharine was great. She was sexy and flirty and loose. She sings so effortlessly!
Paris…she looked her best. Simple, not a lot of get up. I think she did just fine.
Chris, well alrighty then. Again, simple and not a lot of theatrics. Just a man and a song.
Elliot…was he like totally off kilter with that song or what? He was singing to some other beat, not the beat of the band.
Mandisa (I call her Mandy)…um, she tried. And it wasn’t half bad. I like that song, but she did not give it the “I’m in charge” vibe, like Shania does.
Kellie…she was alright. She was a karaoke copy. She just doesn’t connect with what she is singing. The words mean nothing to her. She’s just a pretty doll with her string pulled.
Ace…talk about one dimensional. He is the sensitive boy every time, but he doesn’t get called out for it. Ace, can you rock? Can you belt it out? I don’t think so.
So many stools tonight. So much thoughtful posing and crouching. On to Queen night! Whatever will Kellie sing?

sigh…now i know how the country singers felt when they had to sing the r&b songs. when you’re out of your element, it shows. another thing…these people don’t bring The Fever. if you think of the greatest stars, it’s because they sang with passion. these AI folks probably haven’t experienced most of the songs they sing, which explains why the performances are bland. i’m still waiting for each performer to offer his/her signature performance.

drdawg and redgal, I’m with you on Hicks! I wish the contestants had sung some REAL C&W songs instead of country pop. I LOVED Kellie’s delivery on “Fancy.” Most of the singers tonight seemed to be straining their voices—did anyone else hear that? Paris’ hair was nice (there, I said something good about her). The next AI will be a guy—either Chris or Elliot. I think Katherine McPhee will have as good a future as the winner though—once she finds her own music. I think she just had a bad couple of nights personality-wise, but tonight PTL wasn’t one of them! Mandisa and Paris will do Broadway. Kellie will do OK (I like the “Loretty Lynn naivety”—it will help her sell concerts)—If she finds her Porter Waggoner or Johnny Cash, so much the better. Ace will find a goy-boy group. Bucky and Hicks will be bar/wedding singers. The Oracle hath spoken. :)

The theme for next week is Queen, as in “Bohemian Rhapsody” Queen? If so, that seems odd. Who are they going to have as the guest star? Or maybe its Queen Latifah? I am so confused.
I got chills when Chris sang that Keith Urban song. I think he is the best by far. He brings it every week. I love Elliot and Taylor too, but Chris is the most consistent.
I agree with Ptrap that Kellie doesn’t seem to have any real emotions to back the lyrics that she’s singing. I think that would require some intelligence and she just doesn’t have it. Has there been any press coverage of a boyfriend or ex for Kellie? She just seems so vacant to me.

Rodney,
Could you please look into this? I just read on imdb.com that Prince might perform on an upcoming Idol (and even coach contestants like Manilow and Kenny Rogers.
Here’s the article:
Pop superstar Prince will reportedly appear on American Idol to both coach contestants and perform on the hit TV series - in a bid to maintain high album sales. The notoriously shy star has just released his latest LP, 3121, which debuted at the top of the Us Billboard chart. According to PageSix.com, executives from Prince’s record company convinced him to appear on the show to keep the album at the top of the charts, after noting a huge spike in album sales when Barry Manilow appeared on the program earlier this year. According to one source, “It wasn’t easy though because Prince apparently hates the show and has never even watched it.”

Tonight was definitely better than last week. I’m not a Bucky fan, but I thought he did decently well tonight. I somewhat disagree with the bottom 3 picks. I think it will be Paris, Taylor, and Ace. You just don’t do falsetto in a country song! Mandisa’s performance wasn’t great, but she picked a very catchy, fun song. I think the song choice will save her from being in the bottom three. Taylor just seemed off — it’s like his energy level has decreased a little each week. I think Taylor is great and brings a lot to the show, but because he is so quirky, I fear he may be saying goodbye tomorrow night.

Mercy, you might be right about the song choices. I just cannot imagine why Taylor would have picked that song, when there are SO many country songs better for him.

Ok, there should really be some better judges on this show. Ones that know what they’re doing. they need to have some variety in what songs the like because Simon was getting on my nerves. he shouldn’t be allowed to judge country when he doesn’t like that kind of music. What even gives Paula the right to judge someone’s singing ability because she didn’t even sing that great (the little 80’s teenybopper). And sometimes Randy’s right and sometimes he’s wrong. My other statement, the next american idol will be a boy because none of the girls are that interesting to watch. I don’t ever look forward to one of the girls singing. And lots of people think Paris is so great, but we all know she’s going home before the final two are selected. Everyone knows it would be totally unfair if Paris won because she could have gotten a record deal without AI. she also doesn’t have an original sound and she kinda sounds like Fantasia, but better. My prediction: Bucky or Ace will be leaving. For goodness sake, let’s hope it’s Bucky, because he sure as heck can’t sing.

WOW I cannot believe Melanie torres got voted off Nashville Star. That is a shocker.
NS is down do Chris Young, Casey Rivers and Matt Mason in my Opinion. Nicole or Jaret will be gone next week.

Martha, that was Chris Young that sang Tim McGraw’s “Real Bad Man”. LOL I never liked Tim’s version.
I really thought Jared or Kristen would have left this week. Melanie was a real shocker.

Songluvr — DialIdol is accurate and NOT accurate. They have usually been off on the exact bottom, but every week the bottom 3 have been in thier bottom 4.
They showed Lisa’s weakness when no one expected it. Showed ace to be weaker than expected, and last week they showed katherine bombing when a lot of people thought she was great.
They constantly show Taylor, Chris and Kellie as the strongest three week in and week out. Taylor has been #1 each week.

Taylor is safe Songluvr — mandisa is in serious trouble. She and Eliot are way way way down in the bottom of Dialidols numbers (10% lower than anyone else). Taylor is almost 15% ahead of anyone else — the Soul Patrol is apparently burning up the lines to keep him alive.
Right now Taylor, Kellie, Chris and Katherine are fairly Safe. Bucky is sort of safe (Over 6% ahead of Paris and Ace. Paris and Ace are basically tied, and as I said Mandisa and Eliot are way way behind.
Judging by DialIdols past success the Bottom 3 will come from Ace, Paris, mandisa and Eliot. Any one of the 4 could be voted off.

Agree Mitch - Chris Young is so far ahead of the other 4 it is not even close. matt and Casey are basically a tie for me in second. Kristen and Nicole, nice eye candy but nothing special.
Right now I think that a Chris is in the driver’s seat in both shows.

Interesting, Mike S. So, can I go back on what I said earlier? :) If it’s of the four you named, then Eliot is going. Great guy, love to watch and hear him, but like Paula said, Eliot is “understated.” Paris, Ace, and Mandisa all have made connections with an audience, and I don’t think Eliot has successfully established that yet.

“Ghetto Princess” Paris, you were the weakest link. Bye bye… votefortheworst.com will put Pickle-head through to the finals. It is funny how scared Idol is of the stories coming out about Pickler, Chris, and Chris. They have really started making a push to discredit them.
Ace is single again for all you Swingin’ Richards out there. Get ‘em boys! Brokeback Style!!!
I think Mandisa’s a* got bigger this week too. Hide her behind a damn curtain so I don’t have to look at those saggy upper arms and that big cratered a*.

My take on last night’s performances: Chris was the best by far! Again. Next I’d put Mandisa, not her best but still a really good performance. I agree w/ Randy, she “worked it out” at the end. After that it was ParisKellieElliottAce. I’d put Ace, Bucky and Taylor or Katherine in the bottom 3. Overall, it was another show of BAD song choices and just ok performances. The idols need to PICK IT UP! Especially with the competition on Nashville Star showing up-and-comers with real talent! Chris Young and Matt Mason are both fantastic!!!

I couldn’t agree more about Mandisa’s outfit. She looked absolutely huge! In fact it was disgusting. Those arms just full of fat and it looked like two huge beach balls were taped to her behind, but that really was her butt. I actually felt sorry for her. She has a great voice but in the end I think her weight will hurt her.

I gotta give it up for the Pickler. She was fantastic.
Chris once again proved that he is too good for this show. He is in a league of his own.
Worst of the night were Taylor and Mandisa. Mandisa was just awful. Taylor phoned it in.
The rest were just ok.

Was that actually Kenny Rogers last night? His voice sounds the same but his LOOKS are so different. I was freaked out a little.
I was very disappointed in Taylor’s performance last night. He seemed so out of it. And the same for Paris. She looked really cute, but she didn’t connect with the song. It was a frustrating night for me.

FOr what it is worth here are the Dial Idol numbers for last night. Looks like the West Coast decided they didn’t like anyone — all the numbers dropped drastically from early in the night.
1 Taylor Hicks 37.333 1.72 -
2 Katharine McPhee 28.589 1.836 -
3 Kellie Pickler 28.135 1.842 -
4 Chris Daughtry 26.915 1.857 -
5 Ace Young 23.787 1.897 -
6 Bucky Covington 23.113 1.905 -
7 Paris Bennett 19.035 1.955 -
8 Elliott Yamin 14.184 2.013 -
9 Mandisa 13.177 2.025 -
The first number is the % of BUSY SIGNALS when calling that person, the second number is the estimated Margin of error (IE Mandisa could be 2% higher or lower.)
Dial Idol has been fairly accurate in showing a person’s weakness when others think it is not there. They showed Lisa, Ace and Katherine at the bottom when peopole didn’t think they would be there.
Dial Idol has had the Bottom 3 in thier bottom 4 every week, but the bottom person has only been booted once.
Judging by these numbers the Bottom 3 will most likely be Eliot Mandisa and either Paris, Ace or Bucky. Best money is on Eliot or Mandisa leaving tonight, either of which would be a shame.
NOTE : Bucky cratered bigtime on the West Coast. He was running between 3-5 during the East Coast and Mountain calling periods.
Looks like McPhee is safe, so I guess I was the only one that didn’t like her last night. Her voice is great, but I just did not connect with her at all. Also, it looks like I am one of the few that actually thought Paris was Great last night.

Yo Daddy, I think Chris won the competition last night. Barring a WOW performance from one of the other contestants.
Of the ones who are left, I think only Taylor has the overall ability to challenge Chris on finals night. Taylor has the WOW performance in him somewhere. Paris and Katherine will do something to give people a reason not to vote for them. Kellie will be there until the final 3-4 because of her charm, looks and huge fan base — but she will get killed head to head with Chris.
Eliot, Mandisa, and Ace no longer fit into the equation. Mandisa has cratered in support and is in trouble (she may be going home tonight). Eliot is great but doesn’t have the support. Ace just flat out sucks.

I guess no one could wait until this morning, huh?? I thought that Taylor and Mandisa did the worst and Chris had the best performance. I never realized how sexy he is until he was singing that song. You guys know I’m not a huge Chris fan, but he won me over last night.
I thought Paris did ok. No way was she the worst Rodney! You must have been sipping on whatever’s in Paula’s cup.:-) Bucky did enough to stay. I don’t think he’s going home.
Get ready for the shock because somebody good is going home unless Ace goes. He acutally did better IMO than Taylor and Mandisa. I’m thinking Mandisa better prepare for that long walk to centerstage tonight.

Chris did exactly what he needed to do last night. He slowed down and sang a beautiful ballad. He was already the front runner, but last night probably stamped his ticket to the final 2. The rest of the competition now is to see who goes up against Chris on finals night. I am still banking it will be Taylor.

Mike S, we got our wish. We wanted Paris to tone it down a little and she did. I thought she did good and her hair definitely looked better. Taylor disappointed me. I think he has gotten too comfortable and he is slowly slipping away from me. Mandisa also disappointed me. Why the arms out again? Not attractive at all. I thought she sang just o.k. Ace and Pickler were better than usual. My guess for the bottom three: Probably Mandisa, Bucky, and a surprise person, possibly Elliott or Katharine. I think Taylor, Paris, Kellie, Ace, and Chris are all safe this week.
I spent a lot of time dialing for Paris and in the first hour, I only managed to get through three times. But, Mandisa’s line was open a lot the first 15 minutes. I don’t know. Couldn’t get through to Chris at all. Didn’t even try the rest. I am still rooting for Mandisa because she can sing, but her song choices lately haven’t been the best. Taylor has got to step it back up.

Carla, I agree with you 100%! Chris was looking so darn sexy last night. I’ve thought he was cute since the beginning, but there was something about him just sitting there and singing… .

They all looked as bored singing as I was watching them. I have never seen such a lack of enthusiasm from Idol contestants. Maybe it’s the 7th inning stretch or something but that show was awful, worse than last week.
Bucky has got to go. Wouldn’t someone tell him that it’s important for an audience to see his eyes while he’s performing and to take that dorky cowboy hat off.

Morning, everyone. I enjoyed the show last night so much more than last week. Although some of our favorites did not do so well. Biggest disappointment by far was Taylor. I have loved this guy every week but the last 2. I hope they haven’t tried to rein him in. I thought Kat was great last night but I think the surge in her popularity on DialIdol probably has a lot to do with her being in the bottom 2 last week. She certainly didn’t deserve to be there and her fans are taking note. I tried to vote for her a few times last night and only got thru twice. As everyone knows by now, I am not a big fan of Kellie. She did well last night, not better than Chris or Kat but she was good. I don’t connect with her at all. She sings without emotion and her eyes are vacant. Chris was tops for me last night. He gave us the ballad we have been waiting for and did a great job. I commented on all the singers on the previous thread if you want to go back and check it out.

Heres mine…I’m sorry to say, because I’m a Taylor fan, he sounded like nails on a blackboard last night. The back-up singers and he were just a 1/4 note off of each other. Chris…sounded great! Mandisa and Paris…uuuggghhh. Eliot..Not good. Katherine…looked and sounded fine! Kelly…in her element. Bucky…sounded much better. Ace…wimpy as ever. I know this is politically incorrect…I wish I DIDN’T have a widescreen when Mandisa is on.

For those who didn’t know - the song Chris sang last night was a personal choice for him. He sang that song at his wedding and promised his wife he would sing it for her if he made it to country night.
Looks like he not only melted his wife’s heart, but the hearts of quite a few females last night.
Shay, Last night Taylor “Mailed in” his performance. Simon nailed it and him last night. Taylor is “Playing it safe and boring”. He has seen the polls and such and knows that he can coast right now. I think Taylor is taking a calculated gamble that the SOUL PATROL will keep him in the competition and as such he is holding back the Big Gun performances.
Remember what I have said on here multiple times. Every year the winner has been a person who just hung around the first half of the season, and then wowed everyone late in the season. That is what Taylor is trying to do.

My ranking for tonight, not overall…Chris, Kellie, Bucky, Katherine, Ace, Paris, Elliot, Mandisa, Taylor. I’ll add that I’m not a big fan of country. I thought Kat should’ve done Shania. She even looks a lot like her and the personality/sex appeal combo fits her. If the following make it to Queen week…I expect good performances from: Chris: Best with rock genre Ace: Queen falsettos Elliot: Great voice control

Here are my voting experiences from last night. Kellie - never got through. Bucky - Got through once. taylor - never got though. Chris - never got through. Eliot - NEVER got a busy signal in about 50 calls.
Eliot is in serious trouble tonight in my opinion. I think either he or Mandisa is gone. the only way they possibly stay is if Ace is finally gone, but I think he may have given enough people reason to vote for him last night. UGH.

Coastal next week will definately be “Separation” week. I love queen, but my gut feeling is that next week is going to be an unmitigated disaster.
I think Next week may be a total wipeout for the girls.
Katherine might be able to pull off the vocal gymnastica required, but really try and picture Kat singing Queen.
Paris may find something to sing (Maybe Bicycle Race), but I don’t see here doing a great job.
Kellie - ROFL!!! That is all I can say about Kellie and Queen. ROFL!!!
The Guys will be ok
Bucky - I can see him pulling off “Radio Gaga” or “Tie your Mother Down” or “We will Rock you”
Taylor - “We are the Champions” is “taylor” made for him
Ace - as you said he will falsetto us all to our toilets to barf again.
Chris - name the song, Chris will nail it. Totally his week to shine.
As for Mandisa or Eliot - Not sure which one will still be there. I will address that tomorrow. That said - Eliot would fare much better than Mandisa with Queen.

Well, we all know what Idol is about at this point. It’s all about who gained fans from the week before, and which fans do not become complacent. No, she should sing it because it she could rock it, poke a little fun at herself, and endear herself to the audience by bringing them in on the joke.

I thought Paris looked better last night. The outfit still had a costumy feel but her hair was actually HER hair and looked good. She sings very well but I have heard 5 dozens versions of that song and Paris did NOT impress me with her version. Even Carmen Rasmussen,(thanks for help with that name, Mitch)who does not have as good a voice as Paris, did that song much better.

luvs2read - for good or bad most people do not vote strictly on each weeks performances. If they did that almost every contestant would deserve to be voted off at least once. People build fan bases and that person’s fans may carry them through a bad week. This will be the case with Taylor, people have seen his talent and his fans voted in droves to keep him on the show when he struggles.
As for Eliot - I agree, he is by far the best pure vocalist on the show. But the sad truth is that he has nbot connected with the audience for whatever reason.
Idol is not always fair, but by the end of the year the fans usaully get it right.
I consider it this way (It lessons the headaches and WTF moments) — up until the final 4-5 it IS a popularity contest. It is only when we get down to a handful that people really start to focus on the talent.

American Idol was very boring last night. That’s two weeks in a row! I think that Taylor is tired of the show and ready to move on. I believe the show would be much better with a younger group of singers. Finally, I might come to my senses and stop devoting two evenings in a row to view the show.

Before I saw the dialidol.com numbers, I guessed Bucky would be out tonight, with Paris and Mandisa in the bottom three. If his numbers hold up, then Elliott is guaranteed a bottom three finish and may actually be voted off tonight, if Mandisa isn’t. For the sake of my gut instincts, I have to stick with Bucky for my prediction records but it looks like I’m probably going to be wrong, even if Bucky does land in the bottom three. Mike S, by the way, you are doing a great job on this board. I suspect you really want MY job, right? :) And as you noted, I will have to watch this board like a hawk tomorrow if Paris & Mandisa are both in the bottom three and if either of them are booted.

Hey Blawgers,
Ok I had problems w/ my computer last week so I couldn’t comment on the elimination show. I’m back now, so here’s my take on last night. Everyone except Bucky & Kellie look like there were in pain. All of the song choices where horrible except Paris & Bucky.
The Breakdown:
Taylor - My poor homeboy…he looked like he wanted someone to put him out of his misery. It was painful watching him. I’m very surprised he didn’ pick something uptempo & fun. I hate to say it but he will be a bottom dweller.
Mandisa - Love her, but bad choice. I hoped she would have pulled some Wynonna, Faith, Shania, or LeAnn (I dont’ like country but I feel these ladies). She’s a potential BD.
Paris - Love the kid. I was very pleasantly surprised & think she did a fantastic job. This was a song I’m familiar with & like. Go Paris!!!!
Elliot - He wanted to R&B this song so bad. You could see it. He work so hard to keep it under control. You could read his conversation w/ Kenny Rogers all over his face. Overall, he did okay. It wasn’t great, but he’ll sustain another week.
Chris - That’s one sexy baldheaded white boy. Oh sorry. He did well. It was nice to actually hear his singing voice, which is very nice. He rocked it.
Kellie - She was just alright to me. I couldn’t get into her. Her performance was a blur. But I’m sure she got all the dirty old men vote.
Katherine - Her vocals was okay. She came off a little awkward to me. She’s not a great performer. Maybe she tried too hard. Didn’t do it for me. But she’s go another week
Ace - Please Please Please go away. He did okay. But he’s beginning to annoy me. Like I said last week, he comes off creepy to me. That eye sex thing with the camera is sickening. I’m hoping he’s a BD.
Bucky - So in his element. I was surprised he didn’t do some upbeat Tim McGraw, Ken Cheney (hope I’m right w/ that name), or Garth Brooks. But he did well. I think he sealed his fate this week.

Why do you think Hicks is talented??? He is a novelty singer and once he stops the back and forth motions, the novelty is gone and we are left with a so-so voice. If he was stupid enough to pick “Country Roads” to sing last night when there were SO many other C&W songs to sing, he deserves to visit those roads beginning tonight. A guy is gonna win the competition and it will probably be Chris because he has the talent/look. Elliot is a better singer and lots more versatile, but he is not connecting with the public (and his ears are as troublesome as Mandisa’s figure). The only person who can stop Chris Daughtry is Katherine McPhee. She’s got it as long as she’s into her song. She can sell a song better than anyone in the competition and she’s got the pipes. She NEEDS desparately to sing Ronstadt to connect with her audience. Kellie will also go into the finals and “A Crazy Little Thang Called Love” would take her there. Paula wasn’t even “there” last night….she was in her cups, so to speak. This AI season is losing me and after seeing NS last night, I have found a better show. Please send Bucky home (or Hicks) tonight.

A little Bo news I picked up from Variety.
Actual Sales of his Album have started spiking again and are now over 750,000. They expect new orders to puch the album to PLatinum within the next 2 weeks. They are releasing a second single this week, and analysts expect it to do much better and to cause album sales to rise accordingly.
Also, Bo asked his handlers to allow him to do the “county fair/city festival” circuit this summer instead of touring on his own or as an opening act. Bo is more comfortable performing in the more relaxed open air venues and feels that this would be the way for him to connect with his fans and reestablish himself after his illness.

Taylor Hicks has too many faithful fans. He has a little while tog o before he goes home. Chris impressed me most last night. I thought Paris did good but she still sounded like an imitation. Elliot was good but boring. Ace was a definite snore, drool, turn over, snore, drool, snore again, turn over. Kellie, I don’t know I wasn’t impressed. Bucky, never I never liked but I liked that song just not w/ him singing it. I think Katherine was good but arrogant as usual. Mandisa chose a horrible song but I still think she’s got pipes.

I think some of the advisors may have told Taylor to tone it down a little as far as the movements and swaying and whoops and hollers. But that’s part of who he is, so it took away from his overall performances. It’s like caging a bird.

To Martha, Taylor is not doing those back-and-forth motions for a gimmick. He has nervous tics that he tries to not let be too obvious. That was the specific reason he played the harmonica on that ‘long walk’ in Hollywood.
And I was as disappointed as anyone in his performance last night, because I know what he’s capable of. But to those who are saying it was so horrible? Come on. It was only so disappointing because he has set the bar for himself so high.

I thought the whole night was pretty boring myself. I missed the first 4 but I heard from my friend that Paris did well. I didn’t like Chris or Ace. Katharine did ok. Her voice was fabulous,as usual, but I didn’t like the song. I’m not a real country fan, so I didn’t recognize most of the songs. I was disappointed in everyone!
I think Mandisa needs to sing a nice ballad. For some reason she keeps trying to do up tempo songs. I’m sure she doesn’t want to get pigoen-holed into a “big-over-weight-ballardere” but Luther Vandross made a career out of it, and so can she. I love Mandisa, but it gets tough seeing her move all of that weight all over the stage week after week. Don’t get me wrong! I like her doing her fast songs, but may she should just try and sit down and sing a great song. Taylor should have sung “Lady” by Kenny Rodgers. (First written and performed by Lionel Richie.)
Kellie was in her element and I thought she well. I thought Ace was off key throughout most of the song.

Ken - thank you. That’s it! I think that is what bugs me about Katherine. Her arrogance, smugness, whatever you want to call it.
PLus she is just plain awkward on stage. She would do much better just standing at the Mic and singing. As a matter of fact last night looked like “ok walk over to the side of the stage, sultry pose, walk in front of the judges, look at Simon, smirk, walk to other side, sultry pose, now run back to the Mic stand and finish with some big notes”

I don’t see this so called arrogant thing with Katharine at all. What you guys talking about? She has a solid voice, she stunning and she has stage presence. She appears humble to me. I love her! I was very impressed by Chris, Katherine’s, Kellie’s & Ace’s performances last night. Mandisa, whom I have loved from the beginning, was OK but didn’t have her usual commanding performance. However, I worried about her going into last night as I don’t think country is her niche anyway. I couldn’t think of any song in retrospect, though, that she could have done in that genre. I think she, Paris & Bucky will be in the bottom 3. Bucky needs to go, but I think poor Paris might end up going home. I hope I’m wrong.

Deirdre, I am really looking forward to tonight. Kenny’s new song “I can’t Unlove You” is fantastic, and he sounded great on Nashville Star last week.
Speaking of NS, Sara Evans really disappointed me last night. She was way off key most of her own song. I think she was ill last night. her face was very puffy (maybe allergies) and she did not come back out at the end of the show and do her second song like every other performer.

redgal, I’m not sure if the song is considered country or not but it was played on the CMT and the country radio stations.
Tami, Mandisa sang a Faith Hill song early in the competition and was one of the top for that night. I was worried for her when I saw she was doing that song. I was really hoping for a Wynonna song for her. I was also hoping Paris would do “Cowboy Take Me Away” that she done for the auditions. “How Do I Live” just did not suite her.

The show is starting to get on my nerves. I enjoy blogginh with you guys better than I do watching the show. Last week was sorry with the exception of a couple of people. I felt the same this week. More than the contestants, Seacrest and trhe judges should be ashamed of their behavior. Worst AI yet.

Did you hear Kenny telling Bucky to enunciate? Did you understand all the words to Bucky’s song last night? My mom hates him…says she can’t understand the words to anything he sings, keeps checking her hearing aids to see if its just her. It isn’t, I lose some of what he sings as well.

Tami - I though Mandisa would do well on country night because she has made a living singing backup to Faith Hill, Charlie Daniels and other country acts. But she looked and sounded awkward. Also it didn’t help thinking of Shania Twain while looking at Mandisa. That in itself is a huge letdown.

BJ, how is Mandisa irritating? She doesn’t really do anything that stands out (except for her singing). And Martha you’re the only person I’ve come across who actually dislikes Taylor Hicks. I don’t vote for him and I don’t want him to win but I like him, he’s entertaining and that’s what AI needs.

Good Morning, All. I pretty much agree with most everyone on here. Taylor will get a wake-up call tonight. He has great talent, but last night was just awful. When it seems like Bucky is going to get the boot, he seems to always do a pretty decent performance to keep him alive, but I hope that’s not the case this week, unless it’s Ace that leaves. I’m almost as tired of hearing his shaky, nervous sounding voice as I am hearing Paula give feedback to the contestants! Does anyone agree with me that she might be on something? Or is she just that dumb? Sometimes I feel embarassed for her, just because of the things that come out of her mouth. Tonight should be interesting.

I dont think he is the worst out there but look for him to be in the bottome three but hopefully Mandisa will go. If I want to hear Mandisa I will go down to the gosspil church.

Well, I like some country music, but I sure didn’t like last night. I do think Chris is the only one that did really well. He took in what the judges have said to him and really came out of it with a great performance. I think they have said it many times - SONG CHOICE, SONG CHOICE, SONG CHOICE. Taylor sang the song, but that was it, he didn’t FEEL it. Elliott was off more than on, and it was just not good. Mandisa did not take most all our suggestions (as well as the judges) and take it down a notch, bring out the softer side of Mandisa. We know you are a power singer, now show us you can sing….and the wardrobe person should be SHOT!! A knit top with no sleeves and HORIZONTAL STRIPES?! Are you kidding me?
Someone call Stacey and Clinton now! (ahem, a What not to wear reference) Paris had nice hair - there, I said something nice about her too. Katherine, I think we all know I do not like her, and she didn’t change that opinion last night. First, awful outfit. Second, would you freakin’ quit it with the “sultry stares into the camera”? I think we got enough of that last year from Constantine. That and her annunctiation was AWFUL - you wanna do WHAT with Elvis? Bucky held his own in his category, but needs to be more clear in his verses. Kellie was ok, but enough with the cutesy song choices. Didn’t someone on Nashville Star just do that same song - and better?
All in all, the bottom 3 - Ace (didn’t mention him, cause it makes me sick to think about his performance), Katherine and Elliott. Ok, that is just my personal bottom 3, but I know at least Ace will be in there.

Paris did look great last night and did a pretty fair job. Mandisa disappointed but is a great singer. Chris is a good singer but good-looking not. Bucky wore the hat well. Kelly still playing the dumb roll and you guys are eating it up. Kat looked better but did just o.k. Taylor had a bad night but still a good singer. The rest no comment. My vote still goes to Mandisa a great singer.

Bucky did well for a good ol boy.Kelli was very good.Taylor will survive. McPhee is a normal arrogant young girl who can sing well, her attitude will be a bump on the road to stardom. Mandisa will be a back up singer at best. Paris is not as good as people think she is. Elliot is going to get a record deal with someone soon,he has an unusually unique voice for certain songs. Chris is like Hammer said “YOU CAN’T TOUCH THIS” he can sing a Mickey Mouse song and still be the lead vote getter, because he is that good and the record companies knows that, it is not IF it is who he is going to sign with. Ace will date Paula Abdul after this season over with, Abdul’s connection in the business may help him sign a deal before he vanishes into the ocean.. I believe Ace will be out this week..This is my opinion I welcome yours folks.. God bless..

So I am posting this before reading all of the comments this morning only Rodney’s. My view on last night was somewhat different than Rodney.
Chris I told you all Chris would wow you with a Keith Urban song last week.
Bucky To me, he and Chris tied for the top spot. He did fantastic and just for his performance last night I hope he makes it as he deserves it.
Ace Now I did not know this song but the wife and I really liked it.
Kelli She’s back but I think she still could have done better.
Katherine The wife really liked this but I was kinda so so on this song. Neither one of us knew it. The wife and I thought she sounded good but again she just didn’t connect.
Elliot Just didn’t do it for me. It was ok but in comparison to Garth there is none.
Taylor He better pick up his game. He needs to step into the modern era. For all of the fuss about Chris not changing from Rock ever Taylor needs to something different than his blues.
Paris She acted great and looked cute. Out of all of the people who have ever recorded this song they all blow it away and sound great. Her performance was weak considering how powerful of a ballad this can be especially with her strong voice
Mandisa So disappointed. Her voice was cracking constantly throughout the entire first half of the song. I watched her again this morning just to be sure as I couldn’t believe it. Once she got to the second half of the song her voice got stronger more to the screaming. I am beginning to think she sings in the screaming voice to hide her normal range as it was bad last night.
My prediction for the bottom 3: Mandisa, Ace and Katherine with Ace heading home. In a suprise it just may be Mandisa as her performance was just that bad last night.

Ken, Hicks’ schtick is bogus. You can’t see his wiggling (if that is what is SO intriguing about his act) on a CD and his voice is MIA. I don’t know the guy—he could be real nice, but his singing is not. If some one gave me a free Hicks CD, I would pass on it. Elliot, on the other hand, does have a voice. He sings sincerely without wiggling around and appears to give a bit of thought to his song choices. Big difference.

Hey all. Shout out to Carla and Shay..there is a new sexy in town! Chris!!!!!! I actually wrote my first impression on paper after each performance last night.
Mandisa - bland as black and it’s hard to make black boring! I wear it all the time.
Ace - nasal
Paris - awesome (first time I’ve liked her)
Taylor - boring high school performance
Kellie - in her element; believable, great country soul; best closing note that was a power punch and raspy
Chris - he’s back in my bed; take a breath. very soothing
Katherine - more bluesy than country; not very exciting; like whatever
Elliott - okay vocals; choked the mic, didn’t feel country
Bucky - I want to fall into his arms
Bottom three - Mandisa, Elliott, Ace.
Who deserves to be in bottom three? Taylor!

Jeff, compared to Paris’ previous performances, I thought she was good last night…her hair was normal, her outfit was cute and she didn’t “bob ‘dat haid”. I thought she hit the notes and I felt she was really being herself for the first time. She toned it down. And yes I did like Bucky and how he sat on the side stage and just sang like it was for me and no one else. As Simon would say, the problem with AI is that the best entertainers can easily be kicked off the show. (Remember the 3 Divas) It’s hardly America’s choice when there’s more than one vote per person. You could probably take any decent singer/entertainer, throw millions of dollars at their career and produce some sort of measurable success. I say we vote to kick off the judges each week for making stupid comments.

kat1dawg, I agree with you that Elliot is very boring week after week and his voice is not that good. I have just not gotten the praise for him on this board and the judges. I suggested last week he sing a very powerful song. In some ways that Garth song can be powerful and his version was totally flat. Who in the world told Mandisa that her ourfit was flattering? To go along with that, her singing matched it. Paula, get the earplugs out!
Paris, as usual, played to the camera instead of the audience, and makes it look like she is seeking air time rather than trying to win a singing contest. She blew last night, singing-wise.
Taylor surprised me to no end. He was awful last night, and he’s one of my favorites! He’s definitely not a country singer.
If I had to base my selection on last night, it would be Kelly first and Katherine 2nd.
Other than the ones listed above, I couldn’t even remember the singing of the others, it was that unimpressive.

I’d like to think Ace will be gone before Mandisa but I’m not so sure. Ace has his groupies and they are devoted. Mandisa has disappointed for two weeks now. Lara, I agree with your comments. Women of large stature - especially in the hip area should refrain from wearing horizontal stripes. The only exception to this rule is if the horizontal stripes are strategically located in the “bust” area only - to create an obvious illusion for those less endowed. Mandisa looked terrible and I was not pleased with her song selection. She seemed breathless in several spots and it was not enjoyable.
Taylor bombed on the “Take me Home Country Roads” John Denver song. For such a simple song, he forgot the words in a couple of places and creatively replaced them with something else. He would have been better off to sing “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”, which would have provided a better venue for his skills. Or better yet, why not pick a Kenny Rogers song like Lucille - I could imagine Taylor singing getting into it.
For that matter, why have such a talented singer/songwriter as Kenny Rogers on the show whose music spans decades and not have anyone sing any of his songs - strange!
My Mom really likes Kellie and I think she is cute in her own way - but come on - we all know Fancy is a song about a Mama who turns her daughter out to be a hooker - although she gets her life straightened out by the end of the song -is that an image to be portrayed by an American Idol.
I was dissapointed in all of the song selections last night. Where was the true country? It all seemed mainstream -pop to me and it felt like the contestants chose those songs because they didn’t want to venture into the true roots of country and wanted to play it safe.

Deirdre, I think you are exactly right. There is no question Mandisa is a better singer but 2 bad performances and not in her Genre, looks bad for her. Like I told Shay, I have no favorites I just like to see the people who sing the best stay. A lot of people jump on me because I liked one of Aces performances and he did a better job last night than most. Do I think he is the next idol, no way. But I think you hit it right on the button. It doesnt matter if you are the better perfomer here, you are only as good as your last performance!

Last night my personal bottom 3 was Ace, Katherine and Mandisa (with a possibility of Eliot of Paris ending up there).
After reviewing this blog, other blogs, the polls etc I think the Bottom 3 tonight will be Mandisa, Eliot, Ace (Paris may be there instead of Ace)
Evrything points to the vote off being Mandisa or Eliot.
I predict Eliot is leaving us tonight unfortunately.

Yeah, she should have sung Fantasia’s “Baby Mama.” That’s the true American Idol image.

It seems that the feeling here is that the majority would like to see Chris win as I would at this point in the competetion. However, with the dialidol numbers each week it seems like a longshot. For some reason Taylor seems to be racking it up still even thought the last three weeks have been less than good.

Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, just when I was foolish enough to start thinking that you might actually be able to interact civilly and be a part of something meaningful, you come up with some more stupid, off-the-wall comments that make absolutely no sense. What are you talking about? Can you please clarify yourself and try to write coherent sentences?

The cut of Mandisa’s top made it look like it was riding up on her. But even if I closed my eyes and listened without looking at her, it was awful. As I said above, the only 2 that made an impression on me were Kelly and Katherine. The only thing going against Kelly is that I don’t know if America is going to vote in another country singer after last year’s winner, and that seems to be Kelly’s genre. Katherine’s downfall is her immaturity. But after last night, they were the best of the lot.

I think you right about the bottom three except and I have said this before I am not a fan of Ace and Paris is a better singer but I would like to see who ever does the better job to stay and Ace was better than Paris was last night. What did you think about Buckey?

I have Chris’s 1st CD (recorded when he was 17) and he co-wrote or wrote every song on it as well. I would put it up against Tim McGraw (since he sang a Tim McGraw song last night) or most other established mle country singers and think it would hold it’s on.

Jim, my point is this, RELAX. I made a comment the other week about what I thought the people performed like. I thought Ace did a good job on his falsetto in Butterflies. The judges agreeed and so did the fans as he was not in the bottom three. You told me that Kevin was a better singer. I told you he was going home and I didnt respect that comment and you jumped on me for being gay because I thought Ace did a good job. i didnt respect you for that. Your not an Ace fan, neither am I but I do listen to the music and what they sing. I just ask you do the same.

Wow…two weeks in a row that pretty much stunk like a dead skunk in a barrell of rotten pickles…And with everyone doing Queen next week, I don’t look for it to be any better. Not many can sing Freddy Mercury and make it sound better, or even as good.
My picks from last night:
1`Chris - I thought he took a good song and made it great. Loved the way his voice sounded, and he finally changed it up and did something other than rock it out….. 2 Kellie - she really should have gone for Nashville Star….. 3 Paris - I am in the minority, and believe me, it hurts to say this because I really can’t stand Paris, but she was excellent last night….. 4 - Ace - again, I am disgusted with myself because I can’t stand Ace, but I gotta give kudos where kudos are due, he was pretty good 5 Eliot - I thought his voice was weak and trembling and he should have done better with a good song like that 6 Katherine - I can hear the howls now of “how can IOE be so stupid?” but I really just thought she had an average night last night 7 Mandisa - very disappointing to me, though her voice was still pretty good 8 Taylor - worst performance he has had, just going through the motions. A true professional makes the best of everything, and he failed in this. You could tell he hated the song and the genre. 9 - Bucky - he will be going home…he should have been one of the best in a genre that is clearly his, but he was only average, and if he can’t excel in country, he deserves to go.By Vin

Jeff, I said last night (see beginning of blog) I actually thought (L)ace did a fair job on the song last night. It makes me sick to admit that, but I don’t think he was one of worst three performers last night. I do think he is the worst singer in the group. And I still think Covais is a better singer that (L)ace. You are entitled to your opinions. They just seem to always reveal how stupid you are…………

Paris - Is animal off the “muffet babies” but with a phenonminal voice. Performance just okay but she wasn’t in touch with the song.
Ace - If he didn’t have looks that teenage girls adore he would have been off the show a long time ago. He makes karaoke singers sound good!!
Taylor - Doesn’t have ticks but is trying to mirror the mannerisms of his idol Ray Charles when he should be himself.
Bucky - Sounds like “Bucky the Beaver” has no chance. Just Terrible.
Chris & Catherine I didn’t hear but from what everyone is saying they were the best of the bunch. I look foward to their next performances.
Kellie - Is playing the role of the dumb blond aka Jessica Simpson quite well. I think she cares less about singing at this point. Like someone said early she’s a puppet on a string.
Elliot - Looks like a troll but has a soulful element to him but really couldn’t get into the song because Uncle Kenny told him to tone it down a little.
Mandeisa - Has a strong voice sort of like Jill Scott but is not what America wants because of her physical stature. Let’s be real & that’s ashame.
Overall, the show was boring but it brought me to the realization that country music is much tougher to sing than given credit for. As for the judges Simon assesements are always right own despite the negativity, Randy is the next A** Hall with his dog pound antics. Paula I just don’t know, from the slurred speach to the flaring of the arms, she is in desperate need of help.

Everyone, leave Fantasia alone. She made that song for a reason. I love her album and sometimes people need songs like that to keep them from crying. I am personally not a baby momma. I’m a mother. But some people can relate to her baby mama song. It sounds ghetto, but worked for so many people and the song is just mainly saying keep your head up through the struggle. It’s not really praising the baby momma thing, just supporting it.

i’m gonna back up jeff on this one. Ace was much better than many of the others last night and does not deserve to get voted off tonight. He was much more solid the past two weeks than several others ie Mandisa, Elliot and Paris.
By the way, I have wanted Ace to go for a long time.
By Elane

Bucky was extremely pitchy. Taylor was a yawner. Paris could have matched Lee Ann but didn’t quite make it. Didn’t care too much for Kellie’s version and here’s why: One person in my household is utterly unfamiliar with country. He said “It’s obviously a song with a narrative, but I couldn’t make out any of the lyrics so the story was lost.” True. I thought Mandisa’s performance was excellent, and very listenable. She could, if she wanted to, lead a movement of female African-Americans who cross over into country. Elliott, as always, found a singer whose voice fits his own. Ace, not great, not horrible, in other words, nothing new. Katharine is The Great as always. Chris, better than last week, but not as good as before with “I Walk the Line.” Bucky will be in the bottom 3 tonight but may not be homeward bound. Tough call.

I would almost agree with you, Alan. Ace has been proven to be a more consistant singer than most on this show. Last night’s performance was acceptable except for one thing. That nasal singing grates on my every nerve. Next week someone needs to put a clothespin on his nose so he sings through his mouth.

By IdolOverEasy

My personal thought is that Bucky is likely to go. He should have been one of the top singers last night, and for the umpteenth time straight, he was one of the weakest. If he can’t nail the genre he is best at, then I don’t think he can stick around.
One thing I really gotta say, in light of some of the negativity floating around, is that I think everyone of the top 12 (with exception of Kevin) is really a good singer. Certainly a LOT better than I am (except Kevin), which is why I am on the blog and not on the stage. There are some of these singers that are much better than others, but I like listening to all of them (except Kevin).
I may poke fun or talk about someone sucking, but I am poking fun for laughs sakes, and if I talk about how bad someone is, I am talking about the performance of the night, not the singer themselves.
Last night, Taylor was terrible. He just was. But, I still think he is, if not one of the better singers, one of the most enjoyable ones. Mandisa is still a great voice, but I think she is losing some appeal with her bad song choices two weeks running.
For the Ace or (L)Ace cussers and discussers…I gotta say that overall he is one of the weakest singers, but last night he was actually very good, give or take a couple of notes that slipped flat.
Chris last night proved, to me at least, he is the best of the best. He would have to have a major meltdown not to be in the final two.
As always, it is just my opinion, not a fact, and I don’t intend for others to take this as a criticism of what they say or think.

Ace may have the look of an idol but no substance behind the mask. He justs wants to be an VJ for MTV.
As for Elliot yeah he can sing but he stills looks like the “The Waterboy”. Lets be real 60% of this contest is about singing & the other 40% is looks.

Thanks Alan. I agree that Ace is not the best singer and he will go home soon. I just like to see that people who perform well stay and those that dont go. That simple. But for some people(like Jim) cant seem to get that through their head. And want to argue that people who are no longer on the show are better. you have to put up with some of that here. Not from many people. Most just want to share their opinions.

Interesting tidbt in USA Today about Idol fashion. The silk corsette that Kelly wore last night was the most expensive garment ever worn by an Idol contestant. They also said Mandisa is being flooded with clothes from companies that make plus sizes. Why can’t she find something decent to wear?

Can you tell i am home today? Elliot isnt that bad looking. He is not a 10, but how many of us are and i think i am cute. Elliot will be fine i hope. But i think Chris is the one to beat this year. Taylor will probably end of doing commericals. That guy on the Kellogs crunch cereal has to be rich by now. those commericals are a blast.

Yo, someone pointed out earlier (maybe yesterday) that Mandisa has a good sense of style, but not a good sense of what looks good on her. She has picked some cute outfits, but some are not flattering on her.

Judging from just last night and no other night then Paris, Taylor and Mandisa should be in the bottom three, they were all three awful last night. I don’t think all three will be in the bottom three, but at least one of these will be. Pickler is starting to be the front runner, getting lots of good press outside of Idol. She has gotten more print than any of the others.

Yes, mandisa is very big, but she does pick some nice clothes. i am sure plus size clothing lines are lining up to give her clothing. I wish she would shield the arms but she likes it so more power to her. At least she is free and not bogged down about what people think of her or may think of her. For that alone she is a winnner.

1-i did a song list for queen on google, and queen has like 350 songs (or more) i think it was
2-i didn’t think it was arrogance from kat, i thought it was an attempt at humor, and besides, it was just a true statement, simon has freely admitted he just does NOT get country! if you had it taped, kat kinda laughed a little bit first. maybe it didn’t come out quite like she meant it, but i truly didn’t see arrogance. just like, frankly, i did not see anything but honesty in kevin’s comeback… he’d learned not to expect much from Simon, and just matter of factly said so… i thought it was hilarious!!!
i just hope acey-duecy goes home….bleh.

Ken, compared to the hip area she is medium size at the top. But really she is not medium size there. She has worn some really nice things, but for some reason she loves to flaunt those arms and shoulders. She may not win idol but we will see her again. that is for sure. who did we say that about last year and has it come true yet?

The producers of Idol are cringing at the thought of Mandisa winning. Sorry to say, she is not marketable outside of a narrow niche of gospel. Look at her in the little ads they do; nowhere do you see a woman that size in the media, and don’t give me that Jennifer Holiday old song and dance, most people have never heard of Jennifer Holiday. I mean come on, get real, the press is ripping Britney Spears over her excess weight after the baby and she is 150 lbs lighter than Mandisa. This is an image driven industry and if you don’t think so ask the friends of the late Nell Carter who had real talent and could sing and act but was constantly told to trim down. I may not agree with it, but image is so importatnt in sales. Do you eve see people with pitted skin doing ads on TV, no…we want beauty. Sure mandisa has a pretty face, but being obese, and she is obese…and not just heavy, we have too many double standards in place today. Ruben could carry if off, but not her.

Mandisa is big and that is the (sorry) bottom line. She can do voice overs, and she said she is working on the weight, so we may see a slimmer Mandisa this time next year. Hello everyone. Sorry to interupt the conversation, but I’m going to anyway.
Paris was awful. That song was done by not one but two of the strongest female country singers of the modern era, and she butchered it. Ouch.
I loooooooovvvvvvvveeeeeeee Taylor. I really do. But I was sooooooooooo disappointed last night. He could have done some bluesy country to stay in his vibe, but he just was not good. I think he’ll stay (I hope he does), but the worst I’ve seen him so far.
SSSSoooooooo glad Chris did a slow one. Perfect. Loved it, as Simon would say.
I personally think Simon was being sarcastic in his comment to Paris. I think he really hated her.
And I don’t think Kat had attitude, she was toward the end of the night and was just like, oh well. Faith Hill could have gotten up there and Simon would have found something wrong with it, cuz he doesn’t like country. Period.

As for Queen songs next week…since they are promoting a tour right now, I would say that Brian May, Roger Taylor and new singer Paul Rodgers will all be ‘helping’ the contestants and on the show. I would LOVE to hear mandisa do ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ just for the sheer “Back at Ya” signal it would send to all the BBW haters. My choices would be:
Chris- Tie your mother down Ace- Somebody to Love Bucky-Crazy Little thing called love(the Dwight Yokum version!) Katharine- Love of my life Mandisa- The Miracle Taylor- Leaving Home Ain’t Easy paris- You’re my best friend
Now if you notice I left out Elliott…I guess you know my pick to go tonight….

Jeff, you have a lot of good input to this blog, you just need to tone down the insults and ugliness bro. There is a thin line between being a smart aS and just being an as. We all cross it occasionally, but to be brutally honest you have made it a science at times. Just do a Paris and “be chill”

Beside think of all the great nights they could have.

Just shoot each other and get it over with night.
So many possibilities.

Randy: Yo, Yo, Yo, what’s up Pickler? You know it’s Queen week and I knew this would be a tough week for you, man. But what I like about you is this; Queen’s music is really tough and demanding, and I know because I’ve worked in the studio on two of their albums. You were a little pitchy, especially on Faaaat, and Bottum, but you picked it up on Girls. Overall, I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good.
Paula: Kellie, you know you are one of my favorites. And I think it was so special in your intro when you said you would not have done this song if Mandisa had not been voted off last week. You just keep on being who you are and pray that you don’t end up like me………
Simon: Well, Kellie, I really like you, but I must disagree with Randy and Paula on this performance. I think to sing a song like Fat Bottom Girls you have to be a Bloody Fat Bottomed girl. And you’re not. And believe me, I’ve looked at your bloody butt every week and I’ve quite enjoyed it. Actually, I think I prefer your butt to last years winner….

I think after the way COnstantine absolutely ruled with Bohemian Rhapsody last year that any of them would be stupid to try it. So my money is on Ace.
Bwahahahaha! After tonight, he may be singing it in the shower.

OK I need some help remembering something here. The Bohemian Rhapsody thing got me thinking about it.
What show was it that had William Shatner doing Cameo’s every once in a while where he would do a dramatic reading of a rock song. Was it Saturday Night Live?
I remember him doing Bohemian Rhapsody and it was hilarious. He did all of them in his “Dramatic” halting James t. Kirk speaking style.

Mike those three exactly are who I pick for bottom three.
Jeff, in addition to Mandisa’s bad performance, she looked bad. I’m afraid that deadly combo has doomed her. That was a terrible interpretation of country sound and style.

Yo, if he is meant to go I hope he goes. I know, you know, everyone knows he is not the best singer out there but he did much better than three or four people last night. Why is it you are so against him?

I think Ace is safe after his performance last night. He didn’t do bad at all. People may vote him off based on their overall impresssion of him, but he didn’t do the worst by far. There were at least 3 other people that did worse than he did.

My, you guys have been busy since I stepped out. First iggit worked quite well earlier this morning but won’t if we keep talking about it.
Shatner is (or was) touring with Ben Folds Five, doing dramatic readings of song lyrics and original poems. I saw this on TVLand. He says the only thing he’s always wanted to be able to do is sing…but he can’t, so he recites!
By Yo Daddy
April 5, 2006 02:59 PM | Link to this
See Jeff, here’s your problem: you take everything so seriously and personally. It’s only a TV show and this is only an anonymous forum. I am not against Ace. I think he is going home based on his past performances and what I have read on other blogs. If that makes me an idiot in your eyes, so be it.
By Vin
April 5, 2006 03:00 PM | Link to this
Mike you have to watch Boston Legal. It’s so dry you will be laughing your a* off. Shatner is a dirty old man with a morally tainted edge. Very different than the TJ Hooker and James T Kirk character. Every episode ends with Shatner and James Spader drinking from a brandy sniffer on the balcony of the office, overlooking the city…it’s moonlight and the last line will be something smarta* that ties into that night’s episode.

I’m not a fan of country music so last night show was kind of hard for me to get into … I think Ace, Bucky, Elliot or Taylor will be in the bottom 3 tonight. Taylor - Terrible
Mandisa - Very Bad song choice
Ace - “Yawning”
Paris - Love her she makes anything work, her performance was good not her best but she was alright
Kelly - I think everybody in America knew she would do good, it was her night to shine.
Katherine - Alright ..OK .. nothing special
Chris - He was good, I’m not a fan, but hey everybody loves Chris
Bucky - Enough Pleasssssse
Elliot - Elliot who ????

Jeff, If I may ask a question, please, without you being offended … why do you have to toss epithets out (i.e., he’s an idiot) … would it be possible to express your opinion, acknowledge others may have differing opinions, and enjoy the verbal sparring without actually being negative about your opponents? Negativity about a performance is one thing, that’s why we are here, to express our likes and dislikes and hopefully somewhat constructive criticisms or our disappointments about the contestants. but to “diss” other bloggers … i just don’t get the necessity … unless it’s an ego thing, and that’s another blog …

YoD…You asked yesterday if what we thought about Mandesa’s comment last weekend about “lifestyle”. A co-worker came over today and said he had read some controversy (he didn’t say where) about that comment from Mandesa and that one of hero’s was someone high up anti-gay causes. The areas he said he was reading in said that had cost her alot of support. I don’t know how much truth there is in it but I just thought it was a strange coincidence you asked yesterday and he came to me with this today.

My take on the evening: Taylor- Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. The song choice was bad and we lost his personality. He has a great voice and a nice stage presence. Last night we saw neither. His worst one yet. But, he is still safe. Mandisa- Ouch. I really think she has a fine voice, but, she was consistently off key and picked a bad song. This could put her in the bottom three because her following has been tenuous at best. Elliot- Decent job. I still love this guys voice, but, he seemed very uncomfortable last night. Not believeable and no feeling. Ace- Absolutely horrible version. Keith Urban should be begging AI to NEVER use his music again after that crap. Unfortunately, the girly vote should pull him through, though I think he is losing some of that vote elsewhere. Ill explain in a minute. Paris- Terrible. Boring song she made even more boring. She was completely off key throughout the song. Chris- Here is where Ace loses some of his girl votes. Chris did just what so many said he could not and showed great versatility. Guess what? The guy can sing. And Keith Urban breathed a sigh of relief. Best of the evening. Kellie- Honestly. Right song, but, not impressive at all. I did not think she did it all that well. It was just OK for me. Katherine- Excellent, excellent, excellent. Stepped outside her comfort zone a bit and found an obscure song thatfit her. Then she did it well. Bucky- Good song for him and though obscure, he did it rather well.
My rankings: Chris, Katherine, Bucky All did well. Kellie and Elliot- Just OK Ace, Paris, Mandisa, Taylor- Very Bad Bottom three: Elliot, Mandisa, and either Ace or Paris. Bye Bye to Elliot. Sorry to see him go before Paris or Ace.

Wow @ your ugly….okayyyy people let’s play a game. Idol related Word associations. We can time it since it’s a blog. I’ll say a name and you say another word or name or short (very shrot) phrase that comes to mind related to the person. This should get midns off negativity. FIRST NAME:
Ryan Seacrest.

Italic:“… Elliot has the best male voice IMO. If he leaves tonight, I just don’t know if I can watch it anymore. Does anyone else feel this way?”
Luvstoread, that is pretty much how I feel. I’m not sure I could find another contestant to root for or vote for if Elliott was to leave, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t watch anymore.

JUst in case anyone missed it, and to show off my superior knowledge of Queen songs, I am printing again my thoughts of what song fits what singer….
My song picks for Queen week….(just songs I think each could sing excellently)….
Mandisa - Keep Yourself Alive…
Katherine - Who Wants to Live Forever…
Chris - Tie Your Mother Down…
Taylor - Fat Bottom Girls…
Eliot - It’s a Kind of Magic…
Paris - The Show Must Go On…
Bucky (if he is still around) - Let’s Go Crazy…
Ace - Radio Gaga…
Kellie - ummm…er…..welllll….okay, so there’s not any Queen song she can sing and sing well….Maybe she could hum a few bars of We Will Rock You????

Idol News :
Couple of news stories out today saying that Taylor has been sick all week with the flu, and was almost unable to perform last night. He apparently was running a fever and throwing up all day long, and according to his grandmother has been sick since Saturday.
The fear now is that other contestants will come down with the flu.

Here is some interesting Idol Inside info I just found. This is in a magazine article and all the information comes from an interview with Kevin and Lisa, so this is from actual contestants. Neat stuff.
_Goodbye dinner. Voted off contestants get to hang out with the remaining contenders immediately after they were sent home. It’s a sort–off goodbye dinner where the contestants get to relive their experiences with the one who’s leaving the show. Common topics: Assuring each other that there’ll be more of everybody when they reunite for the “Idol” tour after the season ends and emotional ‘we’ll miss you’ messages especially from fellow Idol roommates.
_No casual talks with judges. The judges don’t get to speak to the contestants other than what is seen during telecasts. How the audience perceive the judges is just about how the contestants know them also. The judges don’t get to advise them backstage.
_The seating arrangement scare. During elimination nights, the contestants are informed of the seating arrangement right before they go out on stage. No one knows how host Ryan Seacrest is going to shuffle your-safe or not-safe statements. The only clue you have is if you’re seating beside someone who frequently trips the ‘bottom three.’ But since America has consistently been an unpredictable voting population, no clues are solid. During vote-off days, the contestants spend the entire day wondering what the seats’ order will be and how Seacrest will break the bad news for those at the bottom three.
_Going first. Like the seating arrangements, nobody knows how the order of performance is arranged. The contestants know that it’s random but they only get to know who goes first before the airing starts.
_Your choice alone. “American Idol” contestants are solely responsible for their choices of songs. Yes, they do get a list of suggested songs after elimination episodes but the decision is all theirs. Usually they arrive at a decision two days after the elimination then it’s all practice from there until the next performance night. By Friday or Saturday, the contestants are pretty much ready with song choices.
_Fashion help. Contestants get fashion help from the show’s production staff. Confined to their respective close door practices, the contestants are given few choices on what to wear, what to look like and how to wear their fashion. There are at least two stylists on board. So when Simon Cowell bickers on a hopeful’s fashion sense, he or she is not much to be blamed for it.
_Good vibes. Contestants of this season claim that everyone has been nice to everyone. It’s all friendship backstage and in their Idol confinement. No one’s getting on the nerve of anyone despite the different personalities. Well, not yet…
_Big deal about song choices. Each week, the judges keep on smacking contestants’ song choices as if it’s the one important mistake an Idol can’t commit yet always falls prey for. Well, guess what? It’s really a big deal. It’s not just something the judges would talk about out of habit, it really matters.
_Finish the song. Voted off contestants don’t know that they are cut off the air even before they finish their farewell numbers. They felt it’s unfair to cut their last big stand off the air when it’s about giving it everything they’ve got at the final moment
_Comment ban. Contestants who are voted off are not allowed to comment, campaign and predict the fate of those who are left to compete. Obviously, people behind the show want the outcome to be on equal footing as much as possible. Because voted off contestants are interviewed by the press, whatever they say about possible outcomes may affect the voting strongly.

By Songluvr
April 5, 2006 04:53 PM | Link to this
Songluvr, Hicks wasn’t “ticking” last night, so I don’t buy the tooth fairy explanation you foisted. Try again. And the thought that he is “pacing himself” for the competition is just laughable! I hope he plays his harmonica as he says goodbye tonight.
Martha, nothing tooth fairy about it. The info on his nervous tics came from a doctor who is a friend of Taylor’s family. I don’t care for the idea of anyone pacing themselves for a competition like this, actually.
Finally, you sound ridiculous every time you talk about Taylor - you actually seem angry at him personally. Like someone else said, you are probably the only person who doesn’t like him. So chill.
