4/24: Elvis theme coming & other Idol revelations

Executive “Idol” producer Ken Warwick did a press phone conference today from 2 to 3 p.m. EST. At least 15 reporters asked questions, from In Touch magazine to mtv.com to the Birmingham News to the Washington Post. It was a great hour.

He revealed to me that an Elvis Presley theme is forthcoming in “a couple of weeks.” He also said it breaks his heart that he can’t get clearance to do Beatles songs and can’t convince the Eagles to do a theme week.

To reduce busy signals, there will be two phone numbers for each of the six contestants Tuesday.

The performance snippets we see at the end of the performance show comes from the rehearsal, which many of you have noticed.

He never spoke directly with Prince reps about Prince doing the show so it never got very far.

He will reject any big star who refuses to work wtih the kids.

He said he decides the order of the contestants on a number of factors. He prefers upbeat songs to open or end the show. He won’t have a contestant open or close a show two weeks in a row.

He said it’s unlikely the show would film Kellie seeing her dad leave jail because it would be unfair to the other contestants. But he might do it on the final results show if she’s still around once the votes are in and if she’s willing to do it.

He was bemused that “American Dreamz” didn’t do well this past weekend. “People have been copying us since series two and doing a pretty lousy job of it. It’s another one for the pile.”

Greensboro was his favorite audition ever, that this will influence future audition cities.

I asked him about dialidol.com but he didn’t seem to mind its existence since only he, Nigel Lythgoe, the Fox standards & practices office and the third-party company that does the voting know who the bottom three really are.

He also noted that the finalists get paid a standard AFSTRA weekly fee for being on the show. I’m not sure how much that is but it’s probably only $2,000 a week or something relatively modest.

He also noted that no finalist can release an album until three months after the winner’s album comes out. He said they can do other things within reason but need to ask. Fox oversees that process, he said.

THey may say DialIdol does not bother them, but the first statement contradicts that. They are going to 2 lines to reduce busy signals in a direct effort to throw off Dial Idols accuracy — I GARAUNTEE!

They went to two lines last year, too. I think the final 4 each had 2 lines.

Vin, Lewisville is a small town of about 80,000. The High School team name is the “Fighting Farmers”. It is a burb od Dallas. I’m not far from Texas Stadium where the football team plays that thinks they are better than the Falcons.

I may have this all wrong but I think they start singing 2 songs next week. Or the week after. They can fit 10 songs in one hour, they have before, but it’s more likely to be 8 songs in one hour. Who will go this week? I’m gonna guess that Kat, Elliot and Paris will be in the bottom 3 without even hearing them sing. I think they have the least support. Speaking of support, where will Ace’s votes go?

linny gets ready to duck all the things that will be thrown at her…

i’m sort of tired of taylor… in listening back to the tapes of the shows, i found that he’s really rather “the same” all the time, no matter what he’s singing. i think he is a really GOOD entertainer, he draws in the audience, he has FUN at it and makes the audience have fun too…but as a SINGER… i find him boring. The same could be said for Chris, except that at least he has, in the last couple of weeks, shown that he can totally turn around that hard sound that he produces and can make it soft… not squishy soft, but soft like a velvet glove…with a fist inside it. you don’t doubt the hardness, the strength, but he softens the delivery well… elliott i think has the best pure singing voice, kat is ok, but i think she’s limited to show time at the whatever lounge or on broadway or some circuit where she would do fantastically well with her looks and voice combination, but i wouldn’t buy a cd at this point… i love paris as an entertainer, she’s versatile and flexible and for 17, pretty darn adaptable, and DOES have a fantastic voice…hubby called her Sarah Vaughn after the last show… um and kellie…sweetie, go on down to dollywood, the show’s for YOU honey!!! talented but not enough to be my idol

eh

what can i say?

see y’all tomorrow!

I’m looking at the ajc.com article which says that Taylor is the winner based on the number of items on eBay which are tied to him. Isn’t that kind of unfair insofar as Taylor has been a “professional” singer whose been around for a few years? It stands to reason that there’d be more paraphernalia out there with his name on it.

Or am I missing something here?

By Hicks Man

The show seems like it is falling into Taylor’s hands. An Elvis week suits him perfect. Also, for any Taylor fans, I just found a great site for any Soul Patrol attire. If any one is interested, try www.taylorhicksclothing.com, I believe his grandmother has something to do with the site.

Yeah, I do believe I “wished” for Elvis songs last week, anyway, anything Taylor picks will be a winner - that’s what I think!!!! Taylor is the ONE!!!

By Deirdre

April 25, 2006 07:51 AM | Link to this

Taylor will do really well with Elvis, there’s no doubt. I think all the others, whoever is left, will also do well depending on the arrangement.

Good morning to all my fellow bloggers. We can talk about Elvis, which is very exciting or we can try to figure out what will happen tonight. I am curious to see what qualifies as a ‘classic’ love song. Surely, almost everything that was sung last week does. So the ONLY point of this theme is free advertising for Bocelli.

Country, Elvis, Eagles, Rod Stewart, Beetles…

Ummm, when is R&B night? Or for that matter, Hip-Hop night, as that is the most listened to and purchased music for the American Idol demographic (both in “urban” and “suburban” areas).

I’m sure the folks at AI wouldn’t imagine making Pickler sing Mary J. Blige, or Taylor sing New Edition.

What an obvious attempt at forcing a certain type of idol.

I notice that it looks like this is the year for Music people to do the SHOW CIRCUIT. First Kenny Rogers performs on Nashville Star and then on Idol. Now David Foster(Major songwriter/producer) was a guest Judge on Nashville Star last week and this week he will be “Coaching” the kids along with Andrea Bocelli.

Also, Rodney’s new blog says that one of the kids will be doing a David Foster song. Well that narrows it down to Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Josh Groban, and about 1000 others singers. ROFL.

Rumor is that Elliot is singing Groban’s “You Raised Me Up”

But, Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” is also a Foster penned song.

Actually Dame it is directed at keeping thier audience. The actual main AI demographic is 25-49 year old adults, followed by Senior Citizens. Those demographics think modern music and especially hip hop is total crap. That is why you will never see it on AI.

R&B does not have to be the modern music of today …

I agree Yolanda. While hip hop is definitely NOT idol material, R&B is or should be. It is a well established and popular style of music. My main objection to tonight’s theme is that it is too similar to last week’s theme. Other than that I am sure I will enjoy the music. I like this kind of music, I just don’t think the Idols should be singing it 2 weeks in a row.

However, if Elliot sings You Raise Me Up, it will be absolutely beautiful.

My real concern with Harry Potter is its lack of inclusiveness. There are no African-American, Latino, Homosexual, Transgendered or Native Americans portrayed in these books. Why would a child from the ghetto be inclined to show an interest in a book or movie dominated by middle class, caucasion characters? Wiccans are definitely a minority, but their roles in our society are not properly defined in the world of Harry Potter. Hopefully, the author’s future works will be more diverse and inclusive.

Keep hope alive !

The show has lost the excitement it had the first three seasons. I agree with Dame and Yolanda 100%! Where is R&B night? Hip Hop is the most played and purchased music of this era, so why hasn’t it been considered? Mike, if the main demographic felt Hip Hop and R&B was crap, it wouldn’t have generated over 600 million dollars last year. Looks to me like American Idol wants a “certain” type of Idol now.

By Janie

April 25, 2006 09:06 AM | Link to this

What was that all about????

By Cdog

April 25, 2006 09:08 AM | Link to this

Elvis music is not similar to last week’s. For those of you who exist in the two-genre hegemony, you probably think that all music outside your isolated world “sounds the same.” Those of us who listen to more than 1 radio station think the variety of genres is better this season than ever before.

R&B? Remember Stevie Wonder night?

On another note, I think Paris or Elliot will be gone this week. Kellie has the least talent of the remaining bunch, but she has the looks and the sympathy vote to push her through to the final three. Taylor is fun and entertaining, but I am pulling for Chris or Kat to win.

Sorry Justine - have to agree with Mike - most people do not listen to Hip Hop - alot of young people listen to Hip Hop but not all of them. We did have a Stevie wonder night if we all remember - that was good. I think AI is doing a good job covering music. There are still a few weeks to go.

American Mother - You are correct, Dolly wrote “I Will Always Love You”. David Foster produced and won a grammy for Whitney Houston’s version of the song.

NOw, Reading is COMPREHENSION people — nowhere in my post above did the words R&B appear. Last week I suggested they should have an R&B/Motown night. What I said is that HIP HOP does not fit AI’s demographics. Yes Hip Hop sells — to 15-29 year olds almost exclusively. That is not A.I.’s demographic - therefore they will not have a Hip Hop night.

By Deirdre

April 25, 2006 09:18 AM | Link to this

Justin, the main demographic FOR THE SHOW is people between the ages of 25-75. Those are the people watching the show. While hip hop is absolutely the most popular amongst the younger set, it is not with anyone older than 30. I doubt that there are many people in the above demographic who think R&B is crap. I agree that an R&B night would be entertaining and challenging for the contestants. I would love to watch the idols attempt R&B.

I always thought “I Will Always Love You” was written by Dolly Parton about Porter Waggoner after she left his variety show to go out on her own.

By Mike S

April 25, 2006 09:25 AM | Link to this

Exactly Janie. AI knows they are selling the show to people over 30. Nielsens ratings site show clearly that over 75-80% of AI viewers are over 30. Furthur proof is in the commercial sponsors. Ford Fusions are not exactly a young person car — they are a sporty car for people who need “family size” but don’t want to drive a “Sedan”. PLus I don’t know a whole lot of teens that need to take Cialis, etc.

Elvis fit’s the demographic the same way as 50’s night etc etc does Yo Daddy. It is well written music that the majority of the audience will know and get into.

What we are discussing is actually the crux of the Dilemma A.I. has faced since thier conception. The show is trying to produce the next POP star - to sell modern music CD’s to teens, yet the demographic of the show requires the contestants to perform music they will most likely never record.

By Deirdre

April 25, 2006 09:26 AM | Link to this

CDog, tonight is not Elvis night…it will be in a couple of weeks.

Yo Daddy, I’ve always thought of Elvis as somewhat universal…like he belongs to the masses now. He has never been my favorite performer but I think it is more than appropriate that a theme be devoted to his music.

By vin

April 25, 2006 09:26 AM | Link to this

Vin pops in hey everyone! If the show wants to please everyone, they could just pick a genre each week. I personally love all music..hip-hop,country, Rock, Metal, R&B, Rap, Country, Motown, and roll up and down the dial on my radio. My music collection is very eclectic I have caused many an eyebrow to raise…one CD will be early Snoop with expletives, go to the next and it’s Shania or Toby, followed by Alice in Chains. But the show has to please it’s core audience as Mike S indicates…still it would be fun to watch them massacre some of the genres!

By Deirdre

April 25, 2006 09:30 AM | Link to this

I agree with you, Vin, I would be much happier if they just did genres with an occasional performer specific theme. The themes this year with the performers has just been too much.

By Deirdre

April 25, 2006 09:42 AM | Link to this

That’s true Yo, like they do on Nashville Star. I think the themes are to challenge them but, more importantly, I think the themes entertain us and keep us talking and watching to see how Kellie is going to manage Stevie or how Chris will handle the Great American Songbook. We know, every week, that the performers on Nashville Star will sing country music well because that’s who they are, but the kids on Idol are all different kinds of singers with different strengths in different areas. We’d be comparing apples and oranges. This way, we are comparing voices.

I agree Yo Daddy but they probably figure by making them sing all these different genres they’re making it fair. For instance if everyone hated rock no one would vote for Chris because no one likes rock but then you make Chris sing something different and people who may like that genre of music and like the way he sang it may vote for him which means that the voting may be fairer because people won’t be as biased since everyone’s singing different types of music. But people still have favorites and arent going to vote on who may be the most talented.

You are forgiven Mike S - but you were not being bit*hy - just haveing an opinion.

Trying to find some Kimmy. Here is what I have so far.

I have found THREE different songs for Eliot — “UNchained Melody” “You lift me up” and “A Song for You”

Here is Eliots CLUE for the week : In case you were wondering; Elliott is going to do some Teaching tomorrow night. I hear a brilliant crescendo building, I have no doubts the performance will rattle the hearts of anybody who loves Elliott’s music. I feel a record deal being materialized. This show stopper will ignite the phone lines as they have never been before! Over the top baby! Top 5 performance material will be delivered! I hope this answers your question!”

The consensus is it points to “A Song For You” as it contains a passage about being taught. Another possibility is Teach me tonight.

Taylor’s clue is : He will be wearing a Velvet Smoking Jacket and recently The song title contains 5 words

Velvet Jacket points to Ray Charles, as he wore Velvet on stage in concert. “Georgia On My Mind” is of course immediately coming to mind, but the title is only 4 words.

Consensus is now on “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, although Charles “Bess You Is My Woman” is also in the mix. Also, the Righteous Brothers “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” is the hot choice on the Taylor Hicks Fan site.

Something to Consider — Elliot and Taylor are roommates, and Bucky has said they are best pals too and helped each other with thier music —- Could it be that they are bringing out the Righteous Brother’s together, “Unchained Melody” and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”

Deirdre, I agree. I liked the Rod Stewart but Stevie WOnder? I agree he is a great artist but who can sing Stevie? I mean lets get smart people. Do someone who doesnt have such a specialized way of singing. I mean if they did Whitney Houston, who could sing that well? Pick a genre and let them do there best from there!

THanks Deirdre, I forgot that or I wouldn’t have listed that that song was being considered. Consensus seems to be that it is “A Song For You”.

Two Places reporting “At Last” for Paris, but that sounds like a wish list to me.

Same sites are saying : “I Will Always Love You” for Katherine and Celine Dion “Because You Loved Me” for Kellie.

Now - the same site that is reporting the above also have totally different songs for Chris Taylor and Elliot - which is why I said it sounds like a WISH LIST not a real list.

They have Taylor — You are So Beautiful, Eliot — Unchained Melody, and Chris — I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing.

All songs are ones we discussed as being good choices last week. So I don’t think that list is accurate.

Good Morning Everyone! This is really getting down to the wire isn’t it?

Where are we meeting for drinks for the Final Two? Rodney? Helloooo??? Maybe we shouldn’t promote such indulgences on a blog.

I’m excited to hear what Taylor and Elliot have chosen for tonight. I would like to see Taylor really show his vocal skills and Elliot push his personality through his performance. I think those two will do alright tonight and maybe Paris. It may be rough for Kellie and Chris. And who’s left? Oh yeah, the puppy girl. She should do okay tonight as well.

THere have been some WOW moments here and there, but there has yet to be a totally memorable WOW performance.

LIke Simon has said a few times — “Almost” the moment.

That is why I think the competition is still wide open —- everyone is still waiting for that OMG moment — for “summertime” “Bridge over troubled Water” “Vehicle” “Independence Day”.

The person who finally pulls off the truly Great performance will immediately jump to the front. I think Taylor has been the closest to doing that so far — he almost had it last week with “you Send Me” —— Chris came right to the edge of it with “I Walk The Line” — and even Katherine has flirted with it a couple times.

I think Paris, and Taylor will do very well tonight. I am on the fence with Chris, and Kat. I can care less what Kellie sing’s her days are numbered. I truly believe it is very important on what song they choose. I think tonight it will come to light that Kat really does not have the voice they boost her up to have. Keep your ear’s perked up, the song choice could write their ticket home.

By Mike S

April 25, 2006 10:38 AM | Link to this

Janie - Carrie Underwood basically won last year’s competition when she sang “Independence Day”. I don’t think any of this years girls are capable of that, with that song.

The truly memorable moments so far in AI history are so few because it needs the perfect blend of singer, correct song choice, and performance.

Even with the same singing, If Fantasia had bounced all over the stage “Summertime” would not have had the same impact. After everything else, the picture of Fantasia just sitting there in that elegant white dress hammering out note after note is what made that song.

I really liked Taylor on You SEnd Me as well. I think anytime you have a moment when your jaw kinda drops, then that singer has done really well. I’ve also had ‘tears in my eyes’ moments and ‘standing up and moving with the music’ moments. I look forward to those moments because then I know I’ve forgotten about who is singing, who is my favorite, who I don’t like, and I become part of the music. THAT’s the best part of Idol.

Janie - “At Last” is a true classic song. Ella Fitzgerald is the standard by which that song is judged ever since. Google “At Last - Ella Fitzgerald” and prepare to be mesmerized. It is an amazing song, and if Paris sings it and performs it correctly, it just could be a MOMENT.

Hello, I can not wait 4 tonight. I truly believe that the choice of song will be important. Kellie can not afford another week of forgetting her words, not keeping up with the music. Chris we have to wait & see. Kat, i think this week we will see,she can not hold a note longer then 5 seconds, before going into her deep raspy voice. This will be the night for Elliott,Paris to really bring down the house,or their plane ticket home will be cashed in.Taylor, please change it up a little tonight, the soul patrol has patroled every neighborhood in town, please patrol in another outfit. I hope 4 Paris to show off her voice, it is the best left.
