5/2: Updated song spoilers, misc.

Deidre, I did a study for tomorrow’s paper about song placement and affirmed your observations. Being last makes you virtually survivor-proof. Being first is a major disadvantage. I’ll provide more details on quieter day,.

Here’s my story in today’s Living section about song choice. I interviewed Kinnik and Kimberly Caldwell. I tried to get Nadia Turner. Here’s the link

Also, as a purely facetious item for the print paper, I’m thinking of listing jobs each of the five remaining finalists could do if they weren’t pursuing any entertainment-related job. I’m sure folks like Jeff J and Yo Daddy can help out here. Thanks!

Here are the firm spoilers for tonight, courtesy of MJ’s blog:

Elliott could kill with “On Broadway,” which was sung last year by Scott Savol. I bet Elliott could do better if he loosens up a bit and lets go. “Home” by Michael Buble is a snoozer. I hope he can place enough soul in this to keep us all from falling asleep.

Taylor doing “Play That Funky Music (White Boy)” should be a hoot. Apparently, the spoiler of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” was wrong. He’s cheating a bit by going for an old Beatles song but I’m sure Ken Warwick is thrilled he got clearance for “Something.” I can hear Taylor doing it but he better feel it or it could be dull.

Kat’s taking a well worn “Idol” song “Against All Odds,” sung (again) by Scott Savol last year and George Huff in year three. Not sure that’s going to be particularly good. I do expect a lot assuming she does K.T. Tunstall, one of my favorite current songs with “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.”

Chris is doing something by Shinedown called “I Dare You.” No idea about that song. I’m listening to a clip on iTunes and it’s right up Chris’ alley. Has that Live/Nickelback feel to it. And he’s doing Styx’s “Renegade.” That’s certainly not one of their more familiar tunes. He’ll probably do fine but I doubt these two songs will help Chris in any way. (The early guesses of Cheap Trick and Staind were incorrect.)

Paris, who’s in the hot seat this week, is going doubly funky on us with possibly the riskiest tune of the night, “Kiss.” Even if she does the Tom Jones version, it might come up as campy and silly. Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” is a sound second pick for Paris, better than what we first heard, Rihanna’s “SOS.’ It’s more up Paris’ alley and I’m glad she got a Mary J. Blige song after she was turned down for “Family Affair” a few weeks back.

Hey Rodney! Glad you’re here with a new blog. Somebody just kept talking to herself in that song spoiler blog. …who does that?…

Anyhoo, I didn’t read through all of Monday’s posts, but apparently Mike S posted earlier the song spoilers I posted just awhile ago. From what I’m reading tonight, most of that info was a hoax ~ that’s right, a joke spoiler put up by someone for fun that spread like wildfire. Some of the ideas are good ones, though. Maybe it’s a hoax that it was a hoax?

I did read where Taylor’s dad said T-Man has great songs lined up for this week and next week. He said these are real ~Taylor songs~ and fans are gonna love them!

I am glad for a new blog too, the old stuff: baseball cards, photos, sports and Who Knows What was REALLY REALLY TOO BORING TO READ!!!! I just LOVE it when the AMERICAN IDOL BLOG is actually ABOUT American Idol!!! Thanks Rodney !!!!!

And Booted AI Singers can surely get jobs where MOST of these people “work”!! If they Produce as much work as they do blogs, they must really really be Hell On Wheels!!!!!

And AGAIN, I am retired, young and retired!!!! and I HAVE my shoes shined plus the only horse Manure I ever shoveled is for my beautiful garden!!!!

Have a lovely day!!!!! ALL

Good Morning bloggers. Good to see you are up and in a good mood today Goofy. ;-) I’ll try and keep you in mind and stay on subject today. LOL

Anyway, have a lot of work to do today, so I will be in and out again. Will try and find and post song spoilers as they come across. A lot of the big list posted yesterday has been confirmed, but some of it has also been shot down.

MJ should get some good info today, so I will be patrolling her blog when I can. Also, she should get the rehearsal scoop later this afternoon.

OH finally, Goofy, hopefully you weren’t shoveling the manure for your garden in your newly shined shoes — that would be bad.

Here is some info that SONGLUVR posted last night on this years Idol song.

http://www.ascap.com/ace/search.cfm?requesttimeout=300&mode=results&searchstr=431670034&searchin=i&searchtype=exact&searchdet=t,s,w,p,b,v&resultspp=10&start=1

Title of the song is “MAKE IT REAL” and get this one of the song writers — NICK LACHEY!!!! ROFL. On a good note - TAMYRA GRAY is also one of the sing writers, so maybe she tempered Nick’s input.

Good morning fellow bloggers(you, too, Goofy, you ARE a fellow blogger whether you like it or not)

Rodney, I just finished reading your latest article (on song choice) in the AJC. Nicely done and full of interesting tidbits. I did not know that AI asked the contestants for a list of songs before the show even began. It seems that sticking with the show’s approved list plus picking songs that are familiar, is the key. The part we have trouble with(and what starts all the conspiracy theories) is the realization that our favorite is likely to be eliminated. While I’ve had my favorites throughout the competition, Chris, Taylor and Kat, I would me perfectly happy with either Paris or Elliot as the new Idol. I think that is the first time that has ever happened.

Goofy, with your permission and forgiveness, I need to bear off AI for just a moment.

Mike, according to his boards, Chris Young will be singing “Drinking Me Lonely” tonight on Nashville Star. It said if he makes it to the final two but I just do not see Jamrose beating him.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 08:17 AM | Link to this

I voted for “Drinking Me lonely” Mitch. Voted the full amount I could on the phone and online for Chris last week.

I hope he wins, he deserves to, but he will be fine no matter what. It may actually benefit Casey a little more to get the shows contract. David Foster and others have already said they are lined up to sign Chris if he does not win.

DId you buy Chris’ CD? It is fantastic. The man is an amazing songwriter. If the NS people are smart, they will just take that CD into the studio, rerecord it and studio it up and put it out mass market.

Well, the Rumor mill is rotating back around to “New York State of Mind” instead of “Play That Funky Music”. It has been confirmed that the Taylor Hicks Band had NY State of Mind on thier regular Play List and Taylor’s dad has said that his birth year song is one he plays all the time and is comfortable with.

By Mitch

May 2, 2006 08:22 AM | Link to this

I have both his CD’s. Yes they are both great. It is hard to believe he was only 18 when he wrote or co-wrote every song on the CD. He was 17 on the 1st CD.

A Georgia boy will be performing on the show tonight. Jason Aldean was raised in Macon.

Mike, how far are you from Dothan, AL?

By Deirdre

I think these song choices will be changing all day. I tried to ask the 21 year old about some of the current Billboard songs on the list but he is in the middle of final exams and was quite surly. Can’t say that I blame him, I used to get pretty surly during finals week as well. I’d like to hear Taylor sing New York State of Mind more than the Funky song. Kimberly Locke did a great job with it but Taylor’s version will be so completely different that I don’t think we’ll be making comparisons.

Morning all. Has it been confirmed that Paris is doing “Kiss” and a Rihanna song? I don’t like her doing “Kiss” whether it’s Prince’s version or Tom Jones’. And Rihanna. Please. She needs something that’s going to wow and keep her in the competition. Neither one of these is it.

That info you asked for isn’t published anywhere as far as I know, Rodney but I didn’t make it up. I am a friend of the local high school’s math teacher. She teaches an AP course in statistics. One of her students last year did a paper on this subject. The kid used the 1st 4 years of Idol up to three weeks before the finale last year. My friend said she checked all the sources and the statistical analysis and said the student did a good job. She no longer has the paper but (as an Idol fan) she remembered some of the results.

Good Morning Everyone! I agree with Rodney’s take on Paris’ possible songs tonight. I’m scared for her if she does Kiss. And people may not appreciate the energy of SOS, so I think she’s taking a couple of risks if these spoilers are accurate.

I am a fan of Taylor’s, and I think something like New York State of Mind would not be a wise choice for him. I fell in love with him for his crazy antics and upbeat persona on stage. I don’t like it when he just stands there and sings. I like the hoopin’ and hollerin’!

I love his energy and his love for music and I really believe that Funky Music would be a better song choice for him at this point. (eeww – that kinda sounded like Paula.)

Morning all. Can’t wait for the show tonight. Hopefully Paris will go first. She needs this extra boost to keep her in the competition. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Elliott second tonight followed by Kat, Chris and then Taylor to finish it off!!! What a show.

By Jex

May 2, 2006 08:52 AM | Link to this

Shay, it seems that performing first is NOT a good thing on this show. Apparently people forget about the first performance and tend to vote for the contestants closer to the end of the line up. But someone has to go first and someone has to be voted off. At this point, that’s the part that sucks.

By shay

May 2, 2006 08:57 AM | Link to this

I thought the first and last performances were most important. Guess not. Usually when voting, I only remember who went first and who went last unless I write the numbers down. Oh well, then maybe Paris needs to go last and Chris needs to go first. I think Chris is pretty much safe this week, so he has the least to lose going first, if that’s the case.

By Deirdre

May 2, 2006 09:05 AM | Link to this

I’m not so sure the first and last thing works past a certain number of singers. Not quoting or anything but it seems like the fewer singers there are, the easier it is to remember who sang first.

By shay

May 2, 2006 09:15 AM | Link to this

I would agree Deirdre. We only have 5 left. I don’t think remembering the order will come in to play tonight. What I don’t like is the two different #’s. I guess they need that though because of the number of calls. I will be text messaging my votes tonight.

By Deirdre

May 2, 2006 09:22 AM | Link to this

I don’t know…I don’t think the 1st and last thing has anything to do with remembering the NUMBERS. I think it has more to do with….how do I put it….forgetting the 1st performance because someone else’s performance grabs your attention. Like figure skating at the Olympics…drawing the first performance in your group is always bad news because the judges won’t give you the highest score so they can make room for someone who might do better.

Kat was 1st last week. She ended up in the top 2 so I don’t think it has much to do with order either. I will say that being in last place will either make you or break you. If any place matters, it’s last place.

All I know is, I love it when we get down to fewer singers and they can sing 2 songs each. That really let’s their abilities stand out and gives the viewer a great point of comparison.

Morning all! How about them Braves…putting two wins together! Lets hope it is more. I am very excited about tonight. I told Songluvr that I am not making any predictions until after I hear the guys tonight. But I aim looking for a surprise!

By shay

May 2, 2006 09:34 AM | Link to this

I like the two songs too. I think when they branch off into two songs, we can realistically see if a person just had a bad performance or if they need to get the boot. I mean, Paris may bomb on one song and do the best overall on the second. But on the other hand, Kat may do awesome on both and then someone else may do bad on both songs. Instead of judging on one performance, it is easier to critique them overall (both songs) and a combination of what they have done thus far in the competition. Tonight will seperate the star quality performers from the not so good performers or mediocre performers (as I call them), if you know what I mean. Does this make sense?

By Jex

May 2, 2006 09:35 AM | Link to this

I like it when they do ‘Judge’s Choice’. The judges usually pick songs that really showcase each contestants’ talents.

But when is our “WOW” moment coming? Maybe tonight if Elliot does “On Broadway”.

Elliott needs to really bring it. He is finally developing a fan base. If he wants to continue to add to that, he needs a strong performance tonight. “Ain’t no Stopping us Now, We’re on the Move.” That’s for the E-Train riders…LOL

By Deirdre

May 2, 2006 09:44 AM | Link to this

The trouble with this group of singers (and the good part as well) is that we each have our favorites and, this time, they are ALL legitimate contenders. What that means, I think, is that (unless someone tanks big time) we are..each one of us…going to see the show differently. Elliot fans are going to think he did the best, Paris fans will think she did the best, etc, etc. The good part is we will all be right. We can sit and pick apart the other performances but, if truth be told, we liked our favorite the best because he/she was our favorite BEFORE the show began. We will decry faults in other singers but not notice or think important, faults in our favorite. That is why we are so fortunate to have 5 good singers and can accept any of them as the next Idol.

SOngluvr asked for a weblink last night for the Taylor Hicks version of “On Broadway” as the direct link I provided didn’t work for her.

So here it is — A full page of Taylor Hicks songs from his albums “In Your Time” and “Under the Radar” —- Plus MP#’s of all his AI performances — AND TWO live sets that were recorded of him performing with the Taylor Hicks Band.

Agreed Deirdre, Unless someone just really tanks tonight it is going to come down to who excites thier fanbase enough to get them to the phones and texting. Everyone left this year is great. Last year we still had Scotty the Body for everyone to rag on.

ALTHOUGH - last year top 5 - Scott Savol sang “ON BROADWAY” and did fantastic (his best performance all year) and got voted off. Hopefully Elliot will buck history.

Here’s to a great night for E to the lliot, the E-TRAIN is in the house!!! and to the SOUL PATROL!!! Even if the VFTW A** patrol is along for the ride.

Good Morning all!!! I’ll be an in and outer again today, work is a knockin on my door again (Dear God, why can’t I win the lottery)

Anyway, I blogged you last night Jeffy, and I hope you have not jinxed my boy Taylor. I’m hoping your hitting streak of 8for8 is ova! I think tonight we’ll get a peak of who will be the winner. IMO Taylor needs to hit a home run tonight or he just might be in trouble. Isn’t he the only one that hasn’t been in the bottom three?

By shay

May 2, 2006 09:59 AM | Link to this

Kimmy, we don’t know if he was in the bottom 3 last week because they only did the bottom 2, but he was not in the top 2 with Kat and Chris.

Kimmy, remember, I dont make my predictions until after performances. I just said look for a shock this week. Taylor has not had exstremely good weeks the past few and I think if he stuggles it could be him. But I am not predicting him ….yet!

By shay

Yeah, I think at this point in the game, they only do the bottom two.

By Try

May 2, 2006 10:18 AM | Link to this

I think Taylor will be at the bottom this week if he does not step his game up. You have to keep improving in this competition, and I just don’t see that from him. I still enjoy him though.

Good Morning Bloggers,

Any confirmation on the songs that will be sung tonight?

By shay

May 2, 2006 10:25 AM | Link to this

Try, I agree with you. I like him, but at this point in the game, he has to bring it and he has not. Your fans can only take you so far. You have to do your part too.

By Jex

May 2, 2006 10:26 AM | Link to this

As much as I love Taylor, I wouldn’t be too upset if he did not continue on in this competition. I think his talent would be stifled by the producers and he just wouldn’t be the same.

He’s gotten the exposure that he needed and has gained some true fans. He and the Soul Patrol will be alright.

I think Elliot needs to win this more than anyone else.

By shay

May 2, 2006 10:29 AM | Link to this

Jex, you are right. Elliott is the one that needs this more than the rest. And maybe Kat but I think a guy will get it. Chris, Paris and Taylor will have no problems putting out albums.

By Try

May 2, 2006 10:30 AM | Link to this

Yes Jex he does. Elliott is the one who needs to be molded and shaped. Everyone else has already established themselves. He may be the only one where winning Idol could be helpful instead of a hinderance.

By Deirdre

May 2, 2006 10:32 AM | Link to this

I’m confused…what does ‘need to win’ have to do with anything? I thought we were picking an idol based on talent not need. I think Elliot would make a great Idol…so would Taylor and Kat and Chris and Paris. It all comes down to 4 weeks of great singing. Whoever can pull that off will win.

By Try

May 2, 2006 10:37 AM | Link to this

Deidre, I do not think that anyone is picking Elliott because he needs to win. We were just discussing who it could help most. I vote for Elliott based on talent, not pity.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 10:39 AM | Link to this

OK here are the latest spoilers care of MJ over at the Big Blog! These are being reported by multiple radio stations apparently, but there are some questionables on there.

  1. Paris— Kiss (Prince) and Without You (Mary J. Blige).

  2. Kat— Against All Odds (Phil Collins) and Black Horse and Cherry Tree (KT Tunstall)

  3. Taylor— Play that Funky Music (Wild Cherry) and Something (Beatles - George Harrison wrote this one)

  4. Elliot— On Broadway (George Benson) and Home (Micheal Buble)

  5. Chris— Renegade (Styx) and “I Dare You” (Shinedown)

NOW - the most glaring thing — SOMETHING by the Beatles. HOWEVER, Joe Cocker just released a new Album in March and his first single off of that album — SOMETHING. Have not confirmed it myself, but people are saying Something was actually on one of the Billboard Top 10’s last week.

ELLiots clue is out — and it fits with the songs above. I will Highlight the key phrases.

Elliott is here to stay, by george. After last week, there should be no question of that. And this week will further show he’s not going home anytime soon.

ON Broadway - BY GEORGE Benson, HOME by Michael Buble

By shay

May 2, 2006 10:40 AM | Link to this

Deirdre, we aren’t saying that Elliott will not make a good idol. He deserves it just as much as the rest. All we are saying is that he needs the exposure of being pronounced the winner more than the rest because people unfairly judge people for other reasons i.e. his looks, lack of stage presence at times, etc. But he is just as good vocally as the rest, if not better. We aren’t saying we will vote for him because he needs to win. Of course we will vote based on who performs the best, but he does need AI to jump start his career.

About the top 2 last week — this little tidbit caught my eye — It has been pointed out on multiple boards now that Ryan never said “THESE ARE YOUR TOP 2” he said “These are your top vote getters” — people are pointing out how AI loves to play games and that CHris & Kat added together would be the “Top Vote Getters” if their total together was more than Elliot and Taylor’s total together.

I know that is nitpicking, but a lot of people have pointed it out and said that AI does it all the time with the bottom 3 — Example, when Chris and Kat were both left in the bottom 2 — Both weeks Ryan did not say “AMERICA THESE ARE YOUR BOTTOM 2” as he did when Kellie and Paris stood together — those weeks he said “AMERICA ONE OF THESE TWO IS GOING HOME”

By Try

May 2, 2006 10:53 AM | Link to this

I feel you Shay! I like Paris, but I just never connected with her like Elliott. I wish her the best though, and I have voted for her in addition to Elliott in the past based on a couple of her performances.

By Jex

May 2, 2006 10:53 AM | Link to this

Mike S, I thought about the SAME THING as soon as Ryan said it - vote getters. They do like to play word games on this show. But I guess it doesn’t matter at this point. If you get the least amount of votes you’re out.

But Mike, doesn’t he usually say before he starts with the first person: “Now we are looking for the two/three with the lowest number of votes”. So it doesn’t matter if he says “America one of these two are going home”. He has already established that they are in the bottom, maybe not in a particular order, but in the bottom. I don’t know about the Kat/Chris thing because I wasn’t paying that much attention so you are probably right on that one.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 11:00 AM | Link to this

True, Jex, plus all that would truly mean is that the top 4 were so close together that AI could play that game.

I have no doubt what so ever that any one of the 5 could leave this week. Iit is that close, they are all that good.

It is wierd, I think as a group this is the best top 5 ever without question — BUT I don’t know that any of them could have beaten Kelly or Carrie, and I think it would have been very close against Rueben, Fantasia or Clay.

That may be why they are so good as a group though — there is no true stand-out to take away from the other 4.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 11:02 AM | Link to this

Shay - yes they are the bottom three — I am pointing out that once he sends back, the two left standing are not necessarily the Bottom 2. Ergo, the 2 top votegetters together are not necessarily numbers one and two.

They shouldn’t play games like that because it’s unfair. All part of persuading the votes to go a certain way. Of course if people think that their favorite is in the bottom three and actually not, then they may tend to vote more for that person and not for someone else. So how do they decide who they want to use this technique on. Who “they” think should win. Because alot of people give out pity votes. For example, if they make us think that Chris is in the bottom two and he isn’t, then the next week he may get more votes than he did the previous week, pulling votes away from someone else that did twice as good as Chris.

OK, I went to Joe Cocker’s website and there is no mention of “something” being top 10 as a single.

HOWEVER one thing AI did not clearly state — is it only Top 10 SINGLES or can it be something off a Top 10 ALBUM?????? Not sure if JOe’s album is possibly top 10 somewhere. Also, I don’t thing “Home” by Michael Buble is in the Top 10, but the album is.

Dear Katharine McPhee,

Just because your beautiful & talented, doesn’t mean you can’t be beautiful on the inside too.

Thank you.

There you go, S.Brown. I hope she gets this in time for tonight’s show.

I am expecting them to say tomorrow night: We are looking for the person with the lowest number of votes. Then they will pull down that person and probably the person with the largest number of votes. Then vote off the loser, leaving the audience thinking the other person had the second lowest number of votes. I will pay close attention tomorrow how they do the results. Just pull down the loser and let that be it.

I think it is actually two-fold Shay. They do it when a big name like Chris is down there for SHOCK value more than anything. Ratings ratings ratings. They know it will energize that person’s voters —- the other trick “These are your top votegetters” anger the voters of the people who the fans thought should be there. Result more ratings ratings ratings for AI — and that is the bottom line.

Deirdre has been dead on the last couple weeks. AI probably doesn’t really care who wins per se — yes they have the ones they would LIKE to win — but in the end AI makes all thier money off the TV show and the tour. The album sales is just gravy off the top.

I would agree that they don’t care who the winner is. At that point, they had made millions of dollars and labeled as the #1 show for 5 years.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 11:18 AM | Link to this

OK - Looks like the list above is for real people. As Heather just posted above, MJ Big Blog just confirmed RYAN SEACREST gave out this list on his radio show just a few minutes ago. This is straight from the AI Host so I think it is accurate.

Paris— Kiss (Prince) and Without You (Mary J. Blige).

Kat— Against All Odds (Phil Collins) and Black Horse and Cherry Tree (KT Tunstall)

Taylor— Play that Funky Music (Wild Cherry) and Something (Beatles - George Harrison wrote this one)

Elliot— On Broadway (George Benson) and Home (Micheal Buble)

Chris— Renegade (Styx) and “I Dare You” (Shinedown)

Also — BEATLE’s #1’s Album is currently in the Top 10, “Something” is on that album. So apparently they could pick from Top 10 albums not just singles. “Home” is also on a top 10 album but not currently on a chart.

Good Morning Diva. I am SO ready for tonight. I think all of the performances will be good. But it’s up to one or two of them to be OUTSTANDING. Someone needs to pull ahead of the pack. If that’s possible. They’re all very talented.

Well Mike, what do you think about this? Do you think the show would be as popular if the judges were deciding who gets the boot. Does the hype come from us voting ourselves or the show itself? I like watching, but the votes never go my way, so it always angers me when I see someone I really like go home. What if there were a panel of say 10 judges (not the current ones with the exception of Simon) that voted each week on who should go home? Would millions still watch?

By Jex

May 2, 2006 11:25 AM | Link to this

Kimmy, I’m not familiar with those songs either. But that’s part of the excitement.

A lot of people are not familiar with Mary J. Blige, so it’s up to Paris to mesmerize people and pull them in with her performance.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 11:25 AM | Link to this

OK ..since the list looks accurate , here is my take on the song choices. These are just my first impression, but you never know how the actual performance.

Kat - “against all odds” - UGH done done and done again — Scott Savol, Jessica Seirra, etc etc. Not a good choice IMO.

Kat - “Black Horse” - A possible Home run for Mcpheever fans. She better hope she sings this second though.

Paris - “Kiss” — Trainwreck in the making. Sorry, don’t see how she pulls this off — BUT she may surprise us ala Kellie and BoRhap.

Paris - “Without You” — Better than SOS for sure, but she is opening herself up for comparisons to Mary J.

Chris - “Renegade” — I love this song, and Chris will nail this. Could be a moment!

Chris - ” I dare You” — Better than Staind, but still indulgent and possibly to hard for AI watchers. better hope he gets to do Renegade as his second song.

Elliot - “ON Broadway” — HOme run Home Run Home Run. This could be THE SONG!

Elliot - “Home” — perfect for elliot, but UGH I hate Michael Buble. Same as with Chris, needs his other song to be his second of the night.

Taylor - “Funky Music” and “Something” — putting these two together because the result is the same — COLD CHILLS!!! Taylor is going for the JUGULAR. THese should be two Taylor classics and both Home Runs. And with Elvis coming up next week — WATCH OUT!

By Jeff

May 2, 2006 11:27 AM | Link to this

Good point shay! I think that is what gives them the “REAL” effect! I dont think it would be so popular if we left it up to a group of people. Remember the last comic standing? There was a huge discrepency because the judges voted and picked a person who was not as funny!

Well, thanks, Yo, that answered my question!

I think everyone has picked pretty safe material tonight with the exception of Chris and Paris. Don’t you think it’s possible that neither one of them wants to win? Chris refuses to compromise on the hard stuff….Paris has picked 2 songs that could give her trouble for the first time. Trouble singing, that is…she already has trouble with staying out of the bottom.

Jeff, judge on the overall performance of the evening. Take into consideration both performances. In other words, if one song stinks and the other is perfect, you have to decide which one made the biggest impact on you. The good one or the bad one. OR you have to give the singer a 50% rating.

Jeff, if I remember correctly the scale last year on this blog was tilted toward Bo. There were a lot of Carrie fans however. But I’m sure the majority wanted Bo to win.

Shaun, I’m sorry but I’m not on the E train. I think Elliot is a terrific singer. I don’t think he’s any better than a couple of the others. In the performance area, he has a lot to learn. I’d buy his CD but i wouldn’t go to his concert. His voice is excellent but raw, and, though I have seen some improvement, I think he still has a long way to go. I hope someone steps in and helps him out. My money is still on Chris, Taylor or Kat. But, like I’ve said before Shaun, if Elliot or Paris wins, I won’t be unhappy.

As far as the Beatle’s Catalog: Michael Jackson owned the rights to those until just the last couple weeks. He sold it to Sony (I think) to help bail himself out of financial troubles he has gotten into.

I just emailed Mike S. Sorry buddy, I should have read through the rest of the posts before emailing you with that repeat of info. I too heard Seacrest on his radio show mention Paris. He didn’t give the list of all the Idols when I heard, he just did a lead in to the Mary J. Blige song Paris will sing tonight and mentioned that she’ll also be singing Kiss by Prince. What a stupid song choice!! As for Taylor, I think he’ll crash and burn with White Boy, but will do great with Something. If Joe Cocker once did a cover of Something, and Taylor has that great Cocker sound that we’ve been missing for several weeks, it should be “his night” with that song. JMO.

Gonna be voting for the E-Train and the Soul Patrol tonight based on the song choices. May throw Paris some love if she pulls it off with “kiss” — but the song is a little too risque for her age, and I have the gut feeling we will be witnessing a trainwreck.

Elliot is my favorite so after reading many of these posts, I’m going to jump on the E Train. You guys are a hoot! Now I’m going to say something that doesn’t seem to be popular with anyone these days: I don’t think Chris is as great as everyone seems to believe. If you want someone who already sounds exactly like the lead singers of about 5 or more hot rock bands, then you like him. But, when it comes to all the other Idol contestants, we all seem to want something unique. There is nothing unique about Chris except he doesn’t belong on Idol. He’s got a great voice and sing the heck out of every song, rarely screwing up. But, he has zero personality on stage. Every time he has the same tilted head, serious look and never shows much personality during his performances. You only see his personality when you see him talking with the others. That’s very odd to me that so many people find him to be so great. It’s like they just WANT the rocker to win for rocker’s sake. JMO

I want to be your fantasy. Maybe you can be mine/Just leave it all up to me. We can have a good time/Don’t have to be rich to be my girl. Don’t have to be cool to rule my world/Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with/I just want your extra time and your…KISS

That’s not right for Paris. Uh-uh!

They may change some of the words around, but I just don’t see how Paris can pull it off. Her voice isn’t right for this song either.

Kiss is more of an Ace song.

I just listened to it Mike….the Joe Cocker version…..my gut reaction is..this is risky for him. He may be like Cocker but he isn’t Cocker….if that applied to Kat last week, it may apply here as well. He hasn’t really successfully pulled off a ballad yet. Maybe this will be the one.

By Carla

May 2, 2006 01:30 PM | Link to this

Jex I agree. I will be cringing through both of Paris’ performances. Mary J??? Please!!! I think she really doesn’t want to win. She couldn’t with those song choices.

By Jex

May 2, 2006 01:34 PM | Link to this

Carla, I was just going over the words to the song in my head and there is no way she can do that.

And doing Mary J. is like doing Whitney. Paris may be getting a little big-headed. She’s good, but…

By Deirdre

Carla, considering the song choices, I don’t think Paris or Chris want to win.

By Jex

It makes me wonder if the contestants are actually picking the songs themselves.

By Carla

May 2, 2006 01:37 PM | Link to this

Maybe that’s their strategy. Instead of just quitting, they’re going to make us (America) make that decision for them. I can’t understand why they would enter a competition and not have the passion to win. I guess we know why Paris did it, but Chris is a grown man. He can make his own decisions.

By Try

May 2, 2006 01:38 PM | Link to this

Yeah I think Paris is about to boot herself off. I LOVE Mary J, but these are two VERY bad song choices for her.

By Mike S

May 2, 2006 01:38 PM | Link to this

D it is risky in that he is going to take a Beatles standard and blues it up, but I garauntee 99% of the audience have never heard Joe Cocker’s version and will not compare it. Everyone has heard Whitney.

The people will compare it to the Beatles version, and they will either like it blues up or they will hate it. The SOUL PATROL will eat it up in spades. The judges will judge against the original and give him props for “making it his own”.

Kat is the one who stands to be compared to Mariah’s version of Against All Odds and will be in trouble if she tries to go big with the song. IF she does the Phil Collins version she will be fine, but she won’t she will go for the Mariah notes, will screech and the judges will compare her to them.

Elliot, Paris and Chris all risk comparison’s with thier current picks too.

Taylor’s risk is changing the song and doing something completely different, the others are the ones that run the risk of being called karaoke tonight.

Now, PTFM — Paula will go nuts, Randy will give Taylor props for getting funky wit it, and Simon will ask him if he is drunk again.
