5/9: All shook up!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Nobody really bombed out tonight but Elliott and Taylor truly shined tonight.
The bottom two? Chris and Katharine. Who will leave? Kat was indeed placed at a disadvantage and she didn’t rise to the occasion. Elliott took two relatively unknown songs and took advantage of them. So Kat goes home. It’s going to be the very first all-male final three!
Dialidol.com as of 9:30 p.m. had Taylor on top as usual, followed rightfully by Elliott. Chris and Kat are fighting to stay alive! Has there been any indication in the past that West Coast voting gave Kat any advantage in the past? Mike S? Do you know?
Elliott (“Trouble”) – He goes for an incredibly bluesy tune. He’s got it groovin’ on. He ends very strong. Wow! He may just beat out Kat for the final three. Randy: “On the stage, I think that was your best performance ever.” Paula: “This was your best performance ever.” Simon: “I’ve got to hand it to you. You’re coming out fighting. You’re showing personality. You deserve to go through to the next round.”
Taylor (“Jailhouse Rock”) He’s smokin’ tonight. He has his signature dance moves and sounds great! Simon’s going to love him! Not. Randy: “You’re in your element. Way to start off the show!” Paula: “You’re as original as ever. You were phenomenal.” Taylor: “We’re going to get real. In the real world, that was a terrible impersonation of Elvis Presley. The dancing was hideous. It was just karaoke with a capital K.”
Taylor (“In the Ghetto”) – He dials it back for a great vocal, as opposed to a dancing, performance. It’s a solid, emotional take that shows he isn’t just our favorite goofball. Randy: “The right key for you finally. The right song for you finally… the kind of record you should make. That was hot!” Paula: “It shows a completely different side, to show how well rounded an artist you are.” Simon: “There is a world apart from the first performance which was silly. That was absolutely the perfect song for you. You have just sung your way into the semifinals.”
Elliott (“If I Can Dream”) I am not familiar with this one. Elliott is taking a chance but it seems to fit his style well. He’s really comfortable with this one. I thought he helped himself with this one. Randy: “You laid it out. That was hot!” Paula: “I think that was the best vocal performance you’ve done this season.” Simon: “You came into the show as an underdog. You chose a song which not many people are going to know. Yet so far that was the best performance so far.”
Chris (“A Little Less Conversation”) – This song fits him perfectly. I’m not sure he’s added enough to it to make it go beyond the Elvis version but he rocks it as always. Randy: “That was the right key for you. That was hot!” Paula: “There’s nothing else I can say. I adore you. You picked a song that showed a little more personality.” Simon: “I thought your first song was a lot stronger. I thought up until the end, it was a flat performance. It was okay.”
Chris (“Suspicious Minds”) My favorite Elvis song! He showcases his angst-y vocals but for some reason, it never quite takes off. It’s good, not stupendous. Randy: “It was kind of nice.” Paula: “You forget how great that song is until you hear Chris Daughtry sing it. See you in the finals.” Simon: “Sunglasses aside, that worked.”
Kat (“Hound Dog/All Shook Up”) – She does a cabaret version of the Elvis classic. It’s entertaining and she shows more verve than she normally does. Randy: “I know you had a good time with that. It was fun. But what happened in the middle?” She missed a lyric. Simon: “All across America, you hold theatrical productions. Looked like a desperate manic audition. I can sing. I can dance. It was manic. It was shrieky. This will always be tough for you. It wasn’t a great performance overall.”
Kat (“Can’t Help Falling in Love”) – This could become Celine Dion hell. She seems a little off in the beginning. I do like the smoky quality in her lower registers. She always has that silly grin on her face though. Yes, it becomes very torch like and her power notes are just okay. Nice subtle ending. Randy: “That was better than the first song. Had pitchy problem.” Simon: “This hasn’t been one of your best nights. The song started off beautifully. What I wanted apple pie on its own. Then I got apple pie and a gallon of cream. The middle part was just too much. You came in with a disadvantage. I don’t think you chose the right songs. That arrangement was just too much.”

Well We have been waiting for the moment and it just Happened. TAYLOR OWNED IN THE GHETTO!!! That is what is called making the song your own. Awesome awesome awesome.
Chris was just OK on th second song. Not real impressed. Good but not great.
HOWEVER, the die is now cast — Elliot or Kat is leaving. All down to the second song.
Elliot owned Kat first songs, but she came in with the bigger fan base, so it is still on Elliot to bring it big this next song.

Mike, you’re probably right. She on thin ice right now. Chris’s second performance was solid if not fantastic, so I’m guessing he’s safe, and Taylor, for whatever reason, appears untouchable.

Chris is flat tonight—not tonally but emotionally. Kat covered it but she shouldn’t be messing her lyrics up and especially on this high energy arrangement. It was a great idea for her and she rocked. She’s got Tommy Mattola’s eye and that’s what counts!

Unless Kat’s posse comes through big time, she may be history tomorrow night. She has the most talent and is the complete package. Tommy will mold her and you will see her in a different light. She is a Ronstadt-sized talent (Linda can sing anything and with a lot of fun)! Elliot had better stay in the competition because he has SO MUCH TALENT and he takes the audience with him on his songs. I’ll be flipping coins in a cup at the piano bar when Hicks takes the mike. Chris needs to front a rocker group—he’d be wasted on an AI tour.

Hmmmm, revision to my earlier post. I missed Taylor’s 1st performance. That was really pretty good. I can’t decide between him or Chris for 2nd place tonight. But Etrain still gets top nod! The guys are definitely in another league, totally apart from Kat.
This reminds me of the 2nd season….Clay, Rueben, & Kimberly Locke. Three GOOD vocalists in top 3 and sad to see ANY of them go home. Sigh

Tonight’s rankings:
Having been a Kat fan, I must say that tonight was her worst performace. Elliott was really good tonight. Based on tonight’s performance alone, Elliott should go into the next round instead of Kat; however, based on all previous performances, Kat will go in. Taylor and Chris will be in the finals.

OK here we go.
Tie Elliot - Trouble - Awesome great fantastic super superb wonderful.
Tie Taylor - In The Ghetto - Put in on arecord right now …#1 with a bullet immediately.
Elliot - If I Could Dream - Great great vocal. Performance was a little bland, but awesome vocals.
Chris - Suspicious Minds - For me his best of the year. Right up there with “Walk the Line”. Any other night he would be at the top.
taylor - Jailhouse Rock - vintage fun fun fun Taylor. Absolute blast to watch, but it is just a fluff song.
Chris - A Little Less Conversation - Very boring bland song first half. Picked it up second half. Awesome finish.
Katherine - I Can’t help Falling In Love - all over the place. Screechy. Tried overly hard, I think she felt the pressure tonight and then paniced after bombing the first song.
Katherine - Hound Dog - The DOG is DEAD!!! Manic, wierd, and forgetting the lyrics is unforgivable.
I see no way Kat makes it through this week. This is two straight weeks she tanked one song —- and this time she did not save it with the second song.

Aight Jeffy!!! You are my IDOL! SO wanted Kat to go home and Ima guessin that you made my dreams come true! Taylor: Sorry, just can’t get into the fist pumpin..expect more cool from someone 29…elevator music. Reminds me of Marietta’s Big Chicken with the funky chick moves. Chris: Sexy and loved the glasses! Second song could have been sung in higher octave but he was awesome at the end..last note was raw and sexy..exactly waht I expected. Loved the fitted white T! Elliott: sweet first song; bluesy second. loved it. Kat: first song actually pretty good; she toned down the sexy to reveal only a flirt (cuz she aint sexy. Nothing tender about 2nd perfomrance. what in sam hill happened here. last not so flat. this song should be sung with vulnerability but she was an empty pretty package with this one. sorry guys. Too loud for me.

Do the judges realize (Paula especially) that if you use the phrase “best performance ever” repeatedly, it loses its meaning? By definition, there can be only one “best performance.”

Eliott is the man!!!! He really owned the night. Trouble is now one of my favorite songs. Taylor was great as well. I loved In The Ghetto. That was my first time hearing it and I loved it. Chris was ok. I really like A Little Less Conversation. That would be because I like Las Vegas and that’s the theme song. Kat was not good. The first song was bad and the second song started off ok but she ended it horribly. Bye bye Kat. She’ll recover and be great but she was way overshadowed tonight.

Hey Carla…my gurlz are up in here tonight! Need the support. Seems the gurlz are all on the same page (sans Deirdre…but thats okay…we still luv ya). We don’t like Kat. The guys luv Kat’s puppies and pouty, glossy lips. Yall home girls need to gloss your juicy plump ones and show our bois what a pair of glossies are really all about! :-) (Seriously considering collagen at this point) Elliott was the bomb and Chris was sexy. So that’s my picks.

Im a lurker - but was inspired to blog tonight.
My rankings:
1)Elliot - Trouble 2)Elliot - Dream - Elliots vocals just were perfect for Elvis songs. He was the best of the night and this is the right sound for him. You have to have blues/soul for Elvis but also a beautiful voice - and this showcased he had both.
3)Chris - Suspicious minds - I thought his sound was really good and very sexy.
4) Taylor - Ghetto - Good performance, good emotion. Im ranking it lower though because he is a bit too raspy for me on this song. Especially because Elvis had such a SMOOTH voice..so this was very good, but not great for me.
5)Chris - Little Less Conversation - Actually I loved this. However, I think the band was overwhelming him when he was singing the low part, and you couldnt hear him that well. But I thought it was great….
All of those performances were basically great. The performances below were in a different category.
6) Taylor - Jailhouse Rock - Fun, well done, fits Taylor. But this is where Taylor just sounds like a really great Cover Band or Bar singer to me. This performance made me really think that…
7 & 8 ) Kat - Houndog and Cant Help Falling in Love. Not sure which was worse - since she butchered them both. I didnt like the arrangement on Houndog at all. But I HATED all the vocal trills and gymnastics she tried adding to the ballad. Again a song that Elvis sang very SMOOTH and she threw everything and the kitchen sink in. And she forgot lyrics. Blech. Shes very pretty and very vocally talented. But she has no true feel for the songs she sings….
I would love to see an Elliot , Chris final. However, Im sure Taylors fan base will keep him in the end and may even make him win. I would hate to see that….I dont think he has a drop of the 21st century in him. I cant see him making an album that makes it to the top 40.
HOWEVER - if he didnt win Idol, I think he would do great in the Michael McDonald world. Or doing the rounds at Chastain. Some niche where he can sing his retro stuff…

It is so amusing how things can sound so different to different people. My wife and I thought Elliott was abysmal. He has always been sub-par but “If i can Dream” (one of my favorite Elvis songs and, as Simon said, his closer live) was the worst of any singer this year. He ruined a wonderful song! And why the judges have turned on Kat is beyond me…it is not the forgetting a lyric, they have been on her a* for a couple weeks now. A month ago, y’all complained how they were too nice to her….

Chris, Taylor appeals to the Over 18 audience. Have you noticed he’s never been in the bottom three or two? He’s the only contestant left who’s been safe every week. That’s because most people love him. He may not have the best voice, but he’s the best performer and connects so well with the audience.
I think Taylor had a slight edge over Elliott tonight, just because I didn’t like Elliott’s first song. Chris is third and Kat, sadly, is last.

Hey,the numbers are 866 numbers, don’t forget!! I am pretty new to this and agree with most who say Kat is going home this time! She should have already in my opinion. Chris and Taylor pegged it tonight, but Elliot did do a great job tonight although I don’t think he will win. But as far as In the Ghetto- Taylor did it well vocally but that song is a very emotionally charged song and he just didn’t hit that part to me. I cried each time I heard Elvis sing that but not with Taylor. Vocally good but just didn’t get to me like the original version. Chris still is my fave but maybe he shouldn’t win so he can pick what he wants to do instead of be locked in on the contract they get if they win.

Kat hit one of two songs last week and missed both this week. She should not stay over the 3 guys that nailed their songs. She may have nice puppies but you can’t see them in the CD player.

Elliott has continued to get better each and every week. Taylor, just sing! Don’t be such a spaz. Kat, well, you had another bad night —- never did connect with you. Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris — quit feaking screaming. The second song started OK, nice and laid back, low-key, almost made me a fan. Then you had to go do that screaming sh*t. Lost it for me. Won’t be sad to see you go, whenever that may be…

if chris goes instead of kat, i may stop watching!!! there is NO way he should be on the BOTTOM!!!!!!
i like kat, love her voice, but NOT when she’s actually competing, it’s the bits of her when she’s just singing, rehearsing, trying songs out, whatever… she should find a good partner and do duets and stop trying to reach for those notes that are not hers
my estimation, Elliott, Chris, Taylor and Kat, in that order, but hey, we ALL know the patrol will pull taylor up over everyone, fair or not, it’s a fact
see you guys tomorrow in a better mood, i hope!!!

I agree that Elliot can sing if you don’t have to look at him. But this is not all about singing even though they might try to say that. Its about all around performance and who is more fun or more appealing (and not in the sexy sense). Taylor and Chris both are all around better performers as well as good singers. Lots of talent. And stick to judging the people on AI and not other peoples ways of talking!!

TC you are actually saying what i’ve been saying all along, with one exception. GENERALLY speaking, Tay-Tay sounds the same, no matter what he’s singing. He did well tonight because the sound he sings is closely related to the Elvis sound. It’s a natch fit. Likewise, Chris has a “sound” that is always in play…and again, tonight, he was able to touch on the part of Elvis’ music that FITS his voice. On the other hand, Elliott, who actually has a better SINGING talent, musically speaking, takes the songs and owns them for himself, without sounding the same every time… IMHO of course… and has grown in both looks and confidence with every single show. Kat’s a natural singer, but imho is NOT a great performer… but every time she’s done any sort of duet, she’s excelled (a la boticelli) and i thing if she finds a partner who can compliment and underpin her voice, they would go places fast… and its TIME for a good new romantic duet
I find chris more diverse than taylor, but elliott more diverse than chris… i don’t think kat, unfortunately, will pass tonight, but i could be wrong, have been a few times in my life!!
vinnie girl, you are the one flying tonight, love it!!!!

Name calling now? Nice response to a sincere request. Most people respond with personal attacks when they have no substance. And “crusty white Harvard type”? Interesting assumption. White, yes. Practically creamy. Yet I’m willing to bet I grew up poorer than you or anyone else on this blog. But I’ll be d*mned if I’m going to sound like it.
Maybe my “exposure” is limited, being white and all, but I don’t personally know anyone of any race or nationality who deliberately tries to sound more ignorant than they are. Most people want to be respected, and they know that sounding stupid is no way to get there.
If you want to sound like you quit school after first grade, knock yourself out. I made a sincere request, you responded predictably. Nuff said.
You can now go on with your name calling.

Everyone was made fun of in school at some point. It just depends on whether they did it to your face or not. And as far as proving yourself, great!! I am all for that. But I only have to prove myself to me!! I was the smart one headed for the Harvard type schools but that didn’t make others who may not have had that chance of going any less of a person than me. I am not saying that I think people should speak ebonics or not or whether that sounds smart or not. I don’t care for slang or words that are sloppy but that is how some people get by. But what does getting into a squabble because someone doesn’t speak like you think they should prove?? Not that you are more intelligent, that’s for sure.

Well, I’m totally an E-man-fan (he’s earned it), but I did send a few votes to Chris based on folks saying he’s in trouble. I would hate to see him go before Kat-ty. I would really love a Chris/Elliott final, but had always figured it would be Chris and Taylor based on their strong support all along. And a had really figured Chris would win as the most widely-accepted, gawked-about Idol all along. …But Kat staying and Chris leaving, cain’t have that!

Yes, if Hicks wins, expect a popular tour rivaling the extraordinary Ruben Studdard’s, the favorite of a zip-code, yet curiously untalented. I cannot wait.
By scgirl
May 9, 2006 11:14 PM | Link to this
Anyone who says Studdard was untalented is not living on the same planet as I am. His trouble was being unwilling to do whatever it took to be a star, in the final analysis. Not having talent was never his problem. This is Taylor’s one and only chance. I say he takes advantage of it!

and vin, love back to you too. I think I get you. And I’m glad that you’re getting me too. (Aww, isn’t this sweet…) But really, I understand it’s your feeling the hip-hop vibe and trying to appreciate the chocolate culture, etc. My only point was that it’s a line being crossed between that, and seeming to mock that/those which you may actually admire. Cause feeling “us” ain’t always about breaking verbs as if most of US really don’t know any better. That’s not all that we’re about. I’m the first person to “keep it real,” and talk “how I like” for my own sanity…that’s who I am. But there’s a line…and crossing it too far by a vanilla sista’ can sound like mockery—vaudeville in black face. Feel me? Hope so, cause I actually do like you when you’re not a hothead.
So, both you and whichever Jeff need to chill on Dave. I get his point…and I will give him the benefit of the doubt that what he believes is sounding uneducated is not the definition of what he believes is black. Just don’t go there…

I’m on planet Earth—where are you? Ruben had a so-so voice and the zipcode vote won the competition for him. Same thing could happen to Hicks. Clay Aiken did lots better with the record buying public—in many zipcodes! Say “Hi” to Uranus for me!

Martha, I guess we just agree to disagree, then. I still think Ruben’s voice was awesome. I think he really stumbled when he did not heed professional advice, that’s all. I love Clay Aiken’s voice and talent, too. He was and is awesome. But he LISTENED to advice. Look at how he allowed himself to be physically transformed from the skinny geek. Ruben resisted (at least that is what I have read) any attempt to change himself physically or aesthetically. I think Taylor, whether he wins or not, will follow any and all professional advice. He is too old to fool around. This is his shot.

I’m surprised to say that I actually enjoyed the Elvis theme. I thought most of the performances were pretty strong. In my opinion, best of the night:
Elliott - “Trouble” Chris - “Suspicious Minds” Elliott - “If I Can Dream” and dare I say: Taylor - “Jailhouse Rock” (I have to admit he worked that song.)

Take this from someone who hasn’t watched any episodes of this season and watched tonght’s.
Elliot is getting a lot of praise. Trust me when I say he is terrible. The only thing I can make of him is that he must’ve been really terrible before if that was his “best ever”.
Taylor is quirky and can sing very well. He showed good range with his songs. I’m not sure where he would fit as The Idol.
Chris has a good voice and does a nice impression of your middling post-grunge rocker.
Katherine has the fresh face, bouncy, young sexy look. She over sings everything as if she is Celine, Mariah, or Christina, but her voice is not on that level.
